Return to Wayland in this thrilling sequel to The Prisoner of Moorhead.
Max Windsor is adrift in the wind, doing everything in his power to return home and save his mother from the cruel hands of the Arkanians. Max is weighed down with guilt - guilt for the dark forces he inadvertently released into the world of Wayland. Will everything he loves be destroyed because of the choices he has made?
Jennifer Fang finds herself in a prisoner procession headed south, to serve in the salt mines of Bazool as punishment for her role in the rebel faction The Rankless. Her heart burns with hatred towards Perzagor, the Arkanian governor of the Bazooli desert, a cruel man who murdered her family and drove her to a life of insurgency. She will do whatever it takes to shatter her chains and take revenge for the pain he has caused her.
Jasper Squid, older brother of Jain Youngblood, is a fresh recruit in the armies of Arkania. He has been shipped to the wild and dark lands of the Lurch, to battle against the savage kahira who dwell there. But Jasper is unsure that he trusts his commanding officers, and when faced with orders he does not feel comfortable obeying, Jasper must make an all too important follow his conscience, or betray the country he loves.
The winds of rebellion blow in Bazool, and the sands of time flow unimpeded through the hourglass.
A fast-paced fantasy full of twists and turns for those who enjoy the Harry Potter series (by J.K. Rowling), Percy Jackson and the Olympians (by Rick Riordan), and The Ranger's Apprentice series (by John Flanagan).
Growing up, Eric moved every few years, and his imagination was sparked and fueled by the beaches of Florida, the mountains of New Mexico, the swamps of Alabama, and the forests of the Pacific Northwest. His love of storytelling was developed by reading and rereading the works of C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, and Brian Jacques. Currently, he lives in Eastern Washington with his wife, Mary, their four children and two dogs. When he's not crafting new worlds, he spends his time teaching, cooking, cheering on the Pittsburgh Steelers, and collecting old paperbacks.
A great, twisty follow-up to The Prisoner of Moorhead. I love the world-building and the complex politics of this universe, and this book furthers both of those elements in a compelling manner. Very much looking forward to number three. I said it before and I’ll say it again. It’s incredibly exciting to have a series in this genre being written in the 21st century that I’ll actually be excited to hand to my kids when they’re a little older. Keep ‘em coming.
This was a fantastic sequel in the Wayland Saga. It's a compelling plot of adventure and drama as it follows Max on his reluctant hero journey, and his friends, family and allies as they each face threats and dangers on their own paths. I loved the range in events from a sea voyage where they're hunted by dark monsters of the deep, a slave caravan of prisoners trekking the desert and planning escape, and travelling through time and space with magical relics. The plot follows different threads of characters journeys, all being pushed together by fate. I liked seeing Jasper introduced in this story and how he was conflicted between duty and loyalty and his morals, but follows his instincts. I liked the added royal intrigue of missing and exiled princes, scheming, action of the prison breaks, rebellion, and the additional magical creatures and weapons. This was a fast paced and gripping storyline, and can't wait for more.
