SCOT ON THE TRAIL!

Brooke Sinclair’s dream of being a published author derailed when she was expelled from the University of Edinburgh seven years ago. Now a ghostwriter, she sticks to other people’s stories. But when her college mentor, Mhairi McCallister, needs a cowriter for her memoir about Scotland’s most challenging trek, Brooke will do anything for the opportunity—including agreeing to hike the rugged Skye Trail for authenticity’s sake. What she doesn't know is that the nature photographer who’ll join her is Jack Sutherland, the teaching assistant who shattered Brooke’s writing career—and her heart.

Between falling for a student despite university rules and walking away from his family’s tour-guiding business to follow his photography dreams, Jack is desperate to prove he didn’t disappoint everyone for nothing. And he can’t ignore his aunt Mhairi’s final wishes for her memoir. Even if it means acting as guide and storyteller for the one who got away. Even if it means keeping secrets about Mhairi’s health.

As Jack and Brooke head into the solitude of the sweeping Scottish landscape, they’re forced to confront old feelings that haven’t disappeared with time. But can two weeks and eighty miles heal years of unspoken hurt and offer a second chance at the end of the trail?

Blurb:

Seven years after heartbreak tore them apart, Brooke and Jack are forced to hike eighty miles together, facing both the wild Highlands and the unresolved emotions between them. With dual timelines, emotional stakes, and the irresistible tension of only-one-tent, this novel weaves a story of love, self-discovery, and living a life worth writing about.

My Thoughts:

I read Kilt Trip by Alexandra Kiley last year and absolutely loved it. So when I found out she was writing a spin-off about one of the brothers, I was so excited! And I'm happy to say that Scot and Bothered definitely lived up to my expectations!

What I loved:

Scot and Bothered absolutely nails the atmospheric setting. Set in Scotland, Alexandra Kiley has a real gift for transporting you there. Having visited Scotland a few times myself, reading this made me feel like I was walking those rugged trails on the Isle of Skye and wandering the cobblestone streets of Edinburgh. I could almost taste the rain, smell the grass, and hear the church bells ring. Kiley’s vivid descriptions truly bring the setting to life, and anyone who’s visited this magical country will feel right at home in the pages of this book.

This is a second-chance romance done right. The way Brooke and Jack’s chemistry builds throughout the book (in both past and present timeline), especially with all the glances and little touches, had me in a chokehold. The YEARNING. The PINING. It was almost more than I could bear! These two are clearly meant for each other. Soulmates, if you will. So watching them struggle with the pain of their past and fight their feelings in the present was gut-wrenching. But every moment of heartache was absolutely worth it when they finally came together. I especially loved how they pushed each other to follow their dreams and constantly encouraged one another to be their best selves. Their belief in each other never wavered, and that unwavering support was truly heartwarming. 🫶

I really enjoyed the fact this was a dual timeline. It gave us the chance to see Brooke and Jack's love in its purest form when it first bloomed, and then watch them as adults forgive and decide to love again. But at the same time, it did break my heart seeing what they were and what they became. Neither was truly happy and were basically living half lives without the other. But I guess that's what happens when you're not with your soulmate. 😭

The side plot with Jack’s Aunt Mhairi, who was also Brooke’s mentor, really added emotional depth to the story. Watching how much both Brooke and Jack cared for her, and seeing them face the pain of her illness, was incredibly moving. Some of their conversations with and about Mhairi even made me a bit emotional. We all need someone like Mhairi in our lives - someone who wholeheartedly loves and believes in us. And honestly, I hope I can be more like her. She was a badass and lived her life to the fullest and with an open heart.

Where the story fell a little short for me:

I did feel that the connection between Brooke and Jack could have used a bit more depth. While the instant attraction and pull between them is sweet, I would have liked to see more exploration of their bond. I want to make it clear that they are not surface level. There definitely is some depth - we know they both are a bit insecure about following their dreams and they open up to each other about that - but again, I just wanted a little more.

There’s also missing information about their lives in the seven years they were apart. How did Brooke stay in Scotland after being expelled? Did Jack really never reach out? How could he not if he loved her so much? Did they date other people? There’s a lot of unanswered questions in that gap that could have added depth to both characters. Similarly, I would have liked to know more about their individual struggles during those years, especially Jack’s family dynamic and Brooke's visa situation.

A few of their inner dialogues and emotional sentiments did start to feel repetitive, and I found myself skimming through some of those parts. It really wasn't that much, but towards the end, I started to notice a bit more.

Overall, Scot and Bothered is a wonderful second-chance romance set in one of the most beautiful places in the world. The lush, atmospheric setting will completely immerse you, making you feel like you’re right there alongside the characters. And with a love story that makes you believe in true love, it’s a journey worth taking. 💕🫶

Naturally, as a Scotswoman, I had to pick this one up – and you should too! This captivating and cute forbidden forced proximity second-chance romance between a ghostwriter and a photographer is brimming with charming humour, heartfelt seriousness, and a journey of self-rediscovery, all wrapped in this tale of love and life. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

[ Contains some spoilers ]

PLOT SUMMARY
22-year-old Brooke Sinclair moved from America to Scotland to attend the University of Edinburgh via a scholarship to become a writer. At a house party with her friends before the start of term, she bumped into Jack Sutherland.

Jack felt like an outsider, not wanting to help run the family tour guiding business and wanting to do something more with his life. He settled for business school regardless. Brooke had doubts of her own about her capability. They very much liked each other. However, the next day they both find they were in the same class – Brooke studying Business for Non-Majors and Jack one of the Teaching Assistants.

7 years and one hellish expel and breakup later, Brooke is now a ghostwriter and is requested by her mentor Mhairi McCallister to ghostwrite her memoir and go to Skye to hike the trail that Mhairi founded in the 90s for inspiration. Her photographer nephew will be accompanying her – none other than Jack himself! Fate has thrown them together again.

The more they spend time together on the trail, the more old feelings resurface. Jack broke Brooke’s trust all those years ago – will she ever trust him again? Brooke was the one that got away from Jack – when an opportunity for her career presents itself, will he let her get away again? Will Brooke settle for her name never appearing on the front of a book? And what will happen when Brooke finds out about Mhairi’s secret?
She’d spent enough hours making eyes at Jack Sutherland. She could interpret what she saw in them with one hundred percent clarity. It wasn’t the look of someone who’d never cared. It was the look of someone who *still* cared.

This is told from the third-person past-tense POV of Brooke and Jack.

OVERALL OPINIONS
I am a sucker for books with puns as titles so of course I gravitated towards this. I am so very glad I did. Alexandra Kiley has such a way with words that is so breathtakingly gorgeous! Her descriptions are some of the most stunning things I have read in a while. I could list so many descriptions but I will limit myself to one such example here:
“Please don’t.” She pushed past him, the wind slapping the door shut with a finality that sounded just like their future.
He could boke from the guilt swirling in his gut... He wasn’t sure which was heavier, his pack or his sinking heart.

Did I have enough time to read the first book in this series? Alas, no! Did I still want to read this? Yes, and that’s the beauty about standalones: you can read it without needing to read other ones in the series. Unfortunately, Logan from Book 1 appears but a few times and his relationship is only briefly mentioned, it could be argued it is a bit *too* standalone. Having loved her writing style, though, I will check it out!

ㅤ🏞️ the Scottish aspect 🏞️
If the rather too obvious title and cover don’t give away where this book is set, the use of “Aye”s and “wee” and “bawbag” and “coo” (highland cow – speaking of, why is there no highland cow emoji) will soon sort you out. As someone from Scotland, I feel a special connection to this story. Indeed, Kiley was inspired by her semester in Scotland to write this series and I can tell she fell in love with the place as much as everyone should!

I’ve been to Edinburgh quite a lot of times now, and she captured the essence of being there, of walking along the cobblestones of The Royal Mile and visiting St. Giles’ Cathedral. I loved Calton Hill, and was thrilled it was mentioned!

I actually do yearn to go to Skye (I will be singing “The Skye Boat Song” when I do, mark my words!) though I’m not a fan of camping and backpacking, so this was quite a treat but also a reminder that my trip could be like this with poor weather and insects haha. Just your average day in Scotland, to be honest. Kiley was so real for this:
There wasn’t much Brooke could count on in this life, but shit weather in Scotland was one of them.

While Mhairi’s character is purely fictional, The Skye Trail was founded in the 90s and is 80 miles long, which is challenging and does require expert hikers with good navigational skills. And oh yup, midges are usually everywhere and very annoying! Ironically, I just bought some insect repellent (even in Glasgow, they can be wee pests!) but I am very tempted to buy Avon Skin So Soft solely because of this book. It sounds heavenly and I can truly believe it is one of the only things that actually work against them haha.

ㅤ🥾 the timeline 🥾
I have read quite a few dual timelines this year and I liked this story’s use of it. It is through this shift, as well as their conversations in the present, that we discover where things went wrong between Brooke and Jack. I did find that some of the backstory felt unnecessary to really explore, because we know some of it from the present-day. Therefore, I think a different approach might have worked: less tell in the present-day, more show in the past.

The introduction to the past was gripping: Calvin Harris’ “Summer” is such a great example of a song from about a decade ago that most people remember, and I was instantly transported back in time when it was mentioned!

What did go well using this method was the parallels: their meeting in the present day vs the past (how different they are), the kiss on the corner of the mouth, the breakups occurring at the same time in the plot.

ㅤ⛺ the relationship
It was interesting to explore the different sides of Brooke and Jack’s relationship through the excellent use of dual POV. When they are younger and inexperienced and unsure of life vs when they’re older, see where their careers have taken them. They end up actually doing a sort of role-reversal: Brooke had dreams, but chose to play safe and get a job that would bring security; Jack played safe but then decided to pursue his dreams of photography despite the pressure on helping to run the family business. Both are trying hard not to disappoint the people in their life.

The one common factor that has been constant in both of their lives (other than the fact they still love each other) has been the presence of Mhairi, who is the reason why their paths cross after all this time. They work together to perfect the memoir. Technically she is the reason why they break up both times (she persuades Jack to do the right thing; the news about her causes betrayal – Brooke believes she is not important enough to know so is more inclined to go to LA) but the difference is this time she causes them to get together. She reminds me a lot of Oliver Jones’ mother Tessa in Love At First Sight (2023) as she is also going through what Mhairi is and remains strong throughout and also hosts a celebration of her life.

This book’s story comes full circle because at the start, we have Brooke “yearning for her signature to match the name on the title page one day” but at the end even though she now can do this, her name isn’t the most important: it’s the name of the woman she dedicates her book to, Mhairi. I thought this was such a profound and beautiful thing.

I did find that a lot of their attraction didn’t feel that deep , less emotional connection more “they look more beautiful than I remember” sort of thing. I think this was a pity.

<< Positives >>
🠚 The cover is super cute and the perfect way to show what the story is about (misleading because I wanted a highland coo interaction haha joking!)
🠚 Amusing moments!
🠚 Dual timeline used effectively
🠚 Only one tent trope got me giggling and kicking my feet – this has to be the best thing for the Scottish weather to ever do
🠚 Contains Scottish history
🠚 The exploration of their relationship through Mhairi
🠚 The way Brooke and Jack support each other is inspiring
🠚 Lesbian representation

<< Negatives >>
🠚 Far too many interruptions – like, I kid you not just about every time they’re going to kiss something interrupts their moment. Let them have it, for pity’s sake! Or at least have one or other of them turn shy or something instead of bringing in an extra barrier.
🠚 Third-act breakup – it’s not my favourite trope, and because they’ve already broken up previously I was more just wanting them to be together. But I have to admit the parallel was good albeit very abrupt: one minute they’re telling each other they still have their “on the same page” paper (super cute) the next she wants him to go with her to LA and they turn all bitter! Broke my heart!
🠚 Never actually explained what happened what Brooke did after her scholarship was revoked. The implication is she was expelled – so then what has she been doing all this time? How did she get into Mhairi’s fellowship program?
🠚 I felt the enemies-to-lovers part was rushed. Like, yes it is great Brooke is more civil to Jack but she goes from one extreme to the other: very grumpy to essentially smiling and laughing. I think that should’ve been eased into it better.
🠚 Some of the dual timeline events in the past felt unnecessary.
🠚 It would have been nice if Logan and Addie featured in this story more.

CHARACTERS
-ˋˏ ꒰ Brooke꒱ ˎˊ-
↳ I do feel sorry for Brooke but love the constant comparison she makes as a ghostwriter to a literal ghost not feeling like she is really existing or doing things she enjoys. It’s just so fitting. Unfortunately, I relate to how she lights up talking about the trail but because the people aren’t listening, her light fades – worst feeling ever!
🠚I like that she finally gets the inspiration she needs to follow her own dreams too.
“I can never seem to follow the rules when it comes to you.”

-ˋˏ ꒰ Jack꒱ ˎˊ-
↳ I’m going to come right out with this and say that I haven’t had the best experiences with guys called Jack so actually this man messing things up wasn’t a surprise haha – but he has restored my faith in men bearing that name. He messed up big time, but he owns up to it (albeit years later). Also, as the book goes on and you find out more about him, it’s very easy to understand that he meant well by his actions, even if it went horribly wrong for both of them.
🠚I resonated with Jack’s desire to take photographs, because moments are fleeting but photos last forever: “In a world where every encounter, every risk, every love, was fleeting, the permanence in capturing a moment he could only linger in but never keep was the only thing to bring him any relief.” – very relatable!
🠚Kiley was so real for the description of his “Jude-Law-in-The-Holiday-glasses”. Cannot unsee it now!
“Those old feelings never went away for me. I should’ve told you I was falling in love with you again. I should’ve told you what I wanted.”

FAV QUOTES
• Another memory in that balcony floated to her, hidden in the dark, warm lips pressed close to her ear with whispered promises and stolen touches.
• It was intoxicating, him wanting to know her. And she desperately wanted to know more about him, too.
Everyone had a one-who-got-away but Brooke had been *The One* and she’d absolutely vanished from his life.
• He had once felt like forever and now eight days was impossibly long to spend in his presence.
• Brooke watched him walk away as pink flower petals drifted down from their branches, one landing delicately on his shoulder before gently slipping off. She wished she’d let go of him as easily.
• And suddenly, the line they couldn’t cross felt like it’d been drawn in the sand, insubstantial and effortless to tread over.
She was drowning in memories of him, tossed around by the ones they never got to make, all those wasted nights dreaming about a future that’d never materialized. She was terrified to look him in the eye, to open a connection that had always felt so intimate and inevitable. Afraid she might remember the mornings they’d lain in bed, foreheads pressed together, too close to focus on the autumn brown of his eyes, but still not close enough.
• Like a camera, up here he zoomed out and the perspective shifted, bringing different details into focus.
• “You know what I like about us?” she asked. “I tell stories with words and you tell them with pictures.” She turned back to look at him with her ocean eyes, her dark hair spinning out in a wave.
• He’d listened to so many voices, but never his own. And she’d lost her voice as a consequence.
• Writing again, even if no one would ever read it, even if it was only for her, made Brooke feel alive. She didn’t want to hold back out of fear anymore.
His eyes were like the fairy pools, vast and endlessly deep. Like if she fell into them, she’d never come out again—and she was very ready to fall.
“We made it,” he said, his voice heavy with the double meaning and light with hope. Against all odds, they had. Brooke felt like a different person on this side of the trail. Forged by wind and rain, despair and courage, hope and love. And she also felt brave and fearless like she had back then. Like she was getting her happy ending after all.
• “You want to know something?” Brooke pulled her wallet from her jacket pocket. She slipped the ripped piece of printer paper from the sleeve and unfolded it. “I could never quite part with this.” | Jack’s biggest smile spread across his face before he pressed a hard kiss against her forehead. “You want to know something?” | He adjusted his hold on her, reached for his wallet in his front pocket, and Brooke’s breath hitched. | “Really?” she asked as he pulled out the other half, unfolded it, matched it up to hers like a love locket.
• “I love you,” she said on a whisper and pushed his hair out of his eyes. “I always have.” | A single tear leaked out of her eye and Jack brushed it away with the pad of his thumb. “I never stopped.”

dnf’ing halfway through. something about the way this was written was, not jarring per se, but clunky. i don’t think we needed the dual timelines, they would’ve worked better in this case as flashbacks rather than entire chapters?

also after being this far in, i would like to care/know more about the characters than we do! i don’t understand why im supposed to be rooting for them or worried about their forbidden romance?!

thank you to netgalley and canary street press for the arc

i really enjoyed this!! i love second chance and this was such a unique take on it. i loved the setting (duh), the academia vibes of some then chapters, and i loveee a self discovery/hike journey with forced proximity!!!!! i just think the dual pov with then/now chapters made the audiobook harder to follow (especially when the then/now happens one after the other with the same POV). i still thoroughly enjoyed this💞🪻

Ahhh!!! Second chance delight. This was such a breath of fresh air. One of the reasons why I love this trope so much is because I love seeing people fall in love all over again (we are humans, we make mistakes and we all deserve second chances.)

I knew this was going to be good as soon as I found out that the MMC name was Jack (they always do it for me idkw. Call it superstition but I call that a green flag.) My sweet, flawed man 😭 I love when MMC's are written so realistic because you can end up relating to them and it's so much easier for us reader to connect and care for them in the long run

I was feral reading this. Their forbidden touches, those stealing glances 😭 that forced proximity!!! Jack and Brooke did it for me and I loved them so fiercely!!

Scot and Bothered will probably be my most disappointing book of 2025. I absolutely LOVED Kilt Trip, but Scot and Bothered missed the mark for me.

Scot and Bothered follows Brooke and Jack as they’re forced back together while hiking the Skye Trail. Seven years ago, their relationship ended in ruins when Brooke was expelled from the University of Edinburgh because of something Jack did. Mild spoilers throughout my review, though I thought it was obvious what happened.

Scot and Bothered didn’t work for me for the simple fact that I don’t think Brooke should have forgiven Jack. Brooke and Jack started a relationship in the past despite him being a TA for her class, though not her TA directly. Jack disclosed the relationship which caused Brooke to lose everything. There was no groveling on Jack’s part, so they parted ways until they were forced back together. Once reunited, Brooke caved almost immediately.

Scot and Bothered is told from both Brooke and Jack’s perspective while jumping back and forth between the past and the present. Brooke and Jack’s original relationship was made worse by all the exposition and description. There were pages of description between dialogue. Almost the entirety of their relationship was told to readers, not shown.

Spice level: 🌶️

Overall, Scot and Bothered was disappointing. I couldn’t get behind Brooke’s decision to forgive Jack. Not to mention the fact that their relationship was instalove.

A second-chance romance between an American writer and a Scottish photographer as they hike the Isle of Skye.

What’s to love...
- Second chance romance
- Scotland setting (hiking the Isle of Skye)
- dual timeline
- only one tent
- slow burn
- themes of grief & self-discovery
- bookish book (writer FMC)
- detailed atmosphere and descriptions of the landscape

What I didn't love…
- I am personally not a fan of dual timeline so that was a negative for me - but I know lots of ppl enjoy it!
- Also not a huge fan of overly descriptive travel scenery so that was a miss for me - but again, I know some ppl enjoy it!
- overall I felt like it lacked tension and banter, the whole book just felt “fine” - certainly not a bad book but not one I'll be itching to reread soon.

🌶️ - Ch 23 & 35, easy to skip if thats not your thing.

Thank you NetGalley and HTP Books for the eARC. All opinions are my own.

2.5 - I really wanted to like this, but unfortunately I lost interest in this so quickly. I just didn’t connect with or care about any of these characters.

Second chance with dual timelines and a TA/student taboo adjacent romance that was very insta-love in the past. Their relationship basically ruined the FMC’s career and her chance at a fellowship, but she forgave the MMC so fast. The best part was probably the male narrator with the Scottish accent.

*I didn’t read Kilt Trip, but honestly don’t think that would have added anything to this for me.

Thank you to NetGalley for the opportunity to read this ARC in exchange for my honest review.

3.75/5 ⭐️

I’m glad I was browsing NetGalley, otherwise I probably wouldn’t haven’t known about this book! It’s a cute and also emotional story of second chances and writing (literally and figuratively)your legacy. Also it takes place in Scotland , one of the most beautiful countries!

For the audio: The narrators were great and the pacing was good.

Give this book a shot if you love
- second chance romance
- books about creative jobs (writing, photography)
- hiking
- Scotland

This brought up so many feelings for me.
As an American who went to school in Scotland, I loved being there. Even had a few romances. However, the one who got away for me is definitely the country itself. The beauty of Scotland is so hard to describe. One minute you’re in a lush forest almost dripping with dew that you can taste in the air and the next you’re in a desolate alien terrain with nothing but rocks below and clouds above.
Unfortunately, most of the book had me I feeling let down.
The best parts were on the trail and interactions with hikers.

But as for the mains and the romance?
I just didn’t love either character and truly feel like they wouldn’t last long term.
Brooke was essentially forced to leave Uni for having an inappropriate relationship with Jack, a TA.
I was confused at her still living in Scotland as an American. I know how hard it is to get a resident visa, it would have been damn near impossible for her to go from a revoked student visa (after having to leave school) to being allowed to just live in the UK. You cannot just decide to live there, there are countless and expensive hoops, ones she wouldn’t make it through. Simply being a ghost writer does not cut it to get a visa.
Ignoring that plot hole, a lot of this book tried focused on finding clarity, redemption and forgiveness, but to me it felt like people figuring out how to communicate. A great deal what the two mains pushing each other to go after their dreams, no matter the risks.
Yes, communication with writing and pictures, getting their perspectives across but also just talking to each other seemed rough. The mains seem to severely struggle with communication and what they want/need.
Frankly, they were both adults in Uni, both made the choice to be together despite the very reasonable rules and you can’t blame others for that.
Brooke spent the last 7 years being childish and mad at Jack, when she perused him more than he did her. Even when they are on the trail they struggle to talk.
Plus they both recently had STD tests, so how much did they miss each other????

Miscommunication is just the most annoying trope to me, so maybe I’m biased. I just don’t think it’s unreasonable to hold off dating for the last few months of a year and not ruin your lives or limit your future.
So, it was hard for me to feel for these two characters.

To me, I think I would have liked to see the mains, communicate, really take responsibility for the choices they made, get closure and find love with others on the trail or even just happiness alone.

In July, I was sort of in a reading slump, so I picked up one of my comfort reads - a romance set in Scotland. "Scot and Bothered" is Alexandra Kiley's second book (I read the first one last year). This time, we get to meet Jack, Logan's brother and a photographer, and Brooke, his ex and a ghostwriter. Both share a complicated past and a mentor, Mhairi McCallister, who is also Jack's aunt. Both have unresolved issues with each other and their dreams. And both end up hiking the Skye Trail on the Isle of Skye in Scotland (my next bucketlist hike in Scotland). So, what could possibly go wrong?

To understand Jack's and Brooke's present, we need to understand their past. The author has chosen to showcase that with two parallel storylines. As much as it's a sensible choice and works well enough, the sync was a little off. As a reader, I needed to know the main issue of their breakup before they got back together (surprise!). To be honest, there was such a massive buildup to their college drama that I was expecting something more. Quoting Mhairi's advice to Brooke for her writing projects, it was somewhat missing conflict, or, to be more precise, the degree of the conflict wasn't big enough, both in the past and the present. Regardless of all that, it was a well-written and enjoyable romance novel. Maybe a bit too much of the 'let's follow our dreams' narrative, but that's just my sarcastic persona being triggered by too much positivity.

Above all, I really enjoyed the possibility of walking the Skye Trail. All descriptions of Edinburgh and the Isle of Skye just make me want to go there sooner rather than later.

4.5! Scot and Bothered by Alexandra Kiley is packed with longing, dreams, and unresolved tension. Brooke Sinclair and Jack Sutherland are both haunted by a past they can’t escape—no matter how hard they’ve tried. After six years apart and the biggest heartbreak of their lives, they suddenly find themselves on a week-long trip to Skye. Brooke is determined to stay focused on the trail and finish co-writing her mentor’s memoir, while Jack is wrestling with impending grief and the feelings for Brooke he never truly put to rest.

Two of my favorite aspects of this book are its second-chance romance and dual timeline. The story shifts between the past—where Brooke and Jack’s connection first sparks—and the present, where they struggle with what it means to be in each other’s orbit again. Watching them fall in love while also experiencing the fallout of their breakup makes their relationship feel so real. Their love, their mistakes, their heartbreak—it’s all beautifully portrayed. The slow burn is perfectly paced, allowing us to see them gradually drift back toward each other. They support each other's dreams, are honest in their emotions, and work toward reconciliation in a way that feels genuine.
It’s a gorgeously written story that I know I’ll be rereading, and I absolutely recommend it to you all!

Scot and Bothered by Alexandra Kiley out tomorrow — 5 ⭐️ <3

thank you @canarystreetpress and NetGalley for the e-arc in exchange for a review 💋

If you’ve been following me, you know how much I loved Alexandra’s debut novel “Kilt Trip”. She instantly became an auto-buy author for me after that one book, and this sophomore novel just cemented that fact further: whatever she writes, I will read and will most definitely end up with the feeling of wishing I would liquify it and ingest it into my bloodstream (is that how that works?).

This is a book for the people who feel stuck even though you know what your passion is; you’re stuck inside of yourself because you can’t seem to decide whether or not you’re good enough. This is for the people who have the worst case of imposter syndrome, who need constant validation, those who have a borderline praise kink that has nothing to do with anything sexual. Spoiler alert: you’re the only one who thinks that. Everyone around you, who knows you, is rooting for you.

Also, Mhairi, I miss you. Please come back. The Marjorie aspect of this book really, Really kicks your ass. I couldn’t love it more if I tried, even if it made me sob so hard I woke up with a headache and had to pop a couple Motrin. But then again, what did I expect going into an Alexandra Kiley book?

I loved this one so much, and I hope you do too! If you’ve read it, please let me know and come talk to me about it. Come talk to me after you’ve read it if you haven’t yet. Sending you all the most love.

Scot and Bothered by Alexandra Kiley
Contemporary romance, multi time-lines. Second chance troupe for both romance and life dreams.
Brooke Sinclair returns to Scotland and the University of Edinburgh to ghost write her mentor’s memoir. Only after she agrees to actually hike the rugged Skye Trail across Scotland does she find out that her photographer will be her lost love from eight years ago. She and Jack fell in love during university but life goals and conflicts ended up with them going their separate directions. Hiking the trail now, they have to hash things out, settle their differences and deal with feelings that linger.

Reconnecting means they need to talk about the past, the present and the future. Life goals and reconsidering career goals is so hard. On top of feelings of love in the middle and a life well lived brings it all front and center. You do need to pay attention to the time changes in each chapter from now and then.
Absorbing, tears, and love valued.

I received a copy of this from NetGalley.

Brooke was once a hopeful university student, ready to take the world by storm with her words. Years later and she's lost it all, hiding behind her job as a ghostwriter. Her newest job though will finally credit her name on the cover. Only she has to go to Skye with the photographer in order to bring life to the manuscript and it's none other than the one she wanted to get away from, Jack Sutherland.
Alex's prose knocked me off my feet. It's beautiful and sincere and provided the perfect imagery. Revisiting one of my favorites places through her words was nothing less than bliss. Brooke is bitter (every right to it) and Jack is apologetic and their then and now relationship turmoil was exactly what I enjoy reading in a second chance. I just need to know if I get to go back with a book from Alex or if I can drag her to Scotland with me next time.
Thank you to the author for the traveling books! All thoughts are my own.

Scot and Bothered by Alexandra Kiley (March 4, 2025) - A huge thank you to the author, HTP Hive, Canary Street Press, and Netgalley for the opportunity to read one of my most anticipated 2025 releases! Below is my honest review.

Seven years ago, Brooke was on the cusp of everything she dreamed of—about to graduate from college, a top contender for a prestigious writing fellowship, and madly in love with Jack. But everything came crashing down. Now, she’s rebuilt her life, but instead of writing her own stories, she’s found success as a ghostwriter, living in the shadows of others' words. Her latest project is her most important yet—helping her mentor, Mhairi, chronicle her extraordinary life. But when their editor critiques the draft for lacking “life,” Brooke is tasked with taking readers on an immersive journey. To do that, she must retrace Mhairi’s steps on the Isle of Skye trail, a path Mhairi first explored decades ago. There's one catch: her photographer on this journey will be none other than Jack, the man who broke her heart seven years ago. As Mhairi’s nephew, Jack has his own reasons for ensuring his aunt’s story is told with beauty and truth.

With so much history, pain, and unresolved feelings between them, Brooke and Jack are forced to confront their past while navigating the challenges of the rugged trail. As the days and obstacles pass, they slowly begin to open up, sharing their regrets and rediscovering the deep connection they once had.

This novel is a breathtakingly emotional second-chance romance, skillfully told through dual POV and dual timelines. We get to experience both their first meeting and the aftermath of their heartbreak, creating an electric contrast between the passion of their initial connection and the sorrow of their separation. Their bond is anchored not only in their past relationship but also in their mutual love for Mhairi, whose wisdom and life story deeply influence both of them. Mhairi's insights, woven through both past and present, are pivotal to the plot, as is the stunning setting of the Isle of Skye. I found myself Googling each landmark, captivated by the beauty of the adventure Brooke and Jack were on.

Some books offer a great story but weak writing, while others have gorgeous prose but lack a strong plot. This book excels in both, blending a compelling plot with some of the most beautiful writing I’ve encountered this year. It’s a heart-wrenching, deeply emotional journey that I won’t soon forget.

The premis of this book is lovely; Brooke and Jack who were in love at university in Scotland, but ended up with broken hearts, hike for a week in the Isle of Skye and learn to trust and love one another again. (Not a spoiler as this is so obvious from the outset.) I so badly wanted to love it - but there’s something I can’t quite put my finger on? There are points where it feels heavily over written, the characters are overly dramatic - it just didn’t flow smoothly for me. I liked Jack, but Brooke irritated me at times. Why they didn’t just talk at Uni about the situation and the miscommunication beats me: people that deeply in love don’t just walk away and blank the other person! But Scotland and Isle of Skye are portrayed quite beautifully. I do want to do the hike myself having read the book, so there’s a good positive!

3.5!! I listened to this in audiobook and actually thought the story was super cute and I loved that a hiking trip was the primary setting. however, the third act conflict felt SO avoidable that it kinda ruined the ending for me.

Brooke and Jack met and fell in love in college but it ended badly since they were TA and student, both reprimanded when the relationship was discovered. Brooke blamed Jack, as it derailed her writing career.

Now Brooke is co-writing her mentor, Mhari McAllister’s memoir, a dream job. She’s set to take the same hiking trail on the Isle of Skye to infuse the story with Mhari’s experiences. Little does Brooke know that Jack, being Mhari’s nephew and a photographer, has been assigned to catalog it all.

I enjoyed Scot and Bothered, trekking through the wilds of Scotland’s Isle of Skye with Brooke and Jack as they sorted through their feelings of hurt and yearning. I did find it a little unbelievable, given how they felt about each other in the past, that they just cut off all ties for seven years. Still, I did enjoy seeing them mend fences and discover their intense attraction never faded. I rooted for their HEA. Their hike sounded arduous, but breathtaking and was a highlight for me!

Angus King and Savannah Davies narrated. Angus had a nice Scottish accent which fit Jack’s character perfectly and Savannah performed Brooke’s parts wonderfully. I thought their performances breathed life into the characters and enhanced my enjoyment of the story!

I voluntarily read/listened to an advanced readers copy courtesy of the publishers. These are my thoughts and opinions.

Oh I loved this!!!

I am honestly not a fan of a second chance romance but I absolutely adored this!! I felt that the back and forth between the past and present really sent the action forward and did a great job of getting to the core of Brooke and Jack's relationship.

THE ACCENTS IN THIS AUDIOBOOK!!! The narration was truly perfection and transported me into the world of the book. It really helped solidify Jack's character and I personally loved him.

I truly had such a good time reading this one and I highly recommend the audiobook!!!

Thank you Alexandra Kiley and HTP Publishing for this early copy in exchange for my honest review.

Scot and Bothered by Alexandra Kiley completely surpassed my expectations. While the title and cover initially caught my attention, it’s the story itself that left a lasting impact. The tension between the characters was palpable, and the dual timelines kept me hooked from start to finish. This story definitely brought out the emotions (and tears!) - diving into love, second chances, discovering your passion, leaving behind your legacy, and dealing with the rawness of grief.

I had no idea that this novel is part of a series and set in the same universe as Kilt Trip. I devoured Scot and Bothered in just 24 hours, and I am eager to dive into Kilt Trip and learn Logan Sutherland's story.

This book delivered, and I’m excited to see what else Alexandra Kiley has in store!

Thank you, Net Galley, the author, and publisher for an eARC in exchange for my honest review.

Jack and Brooke had a forbidden relationship in grad school that ended devastatingly poorly. Fast forward seven years and they are assigned to collaborate on a job - him as the photographer and her as the ghostwriter of an upcoming memoir. Not just any memoir, but that of his aunt and her mentor, Mharai (who, unbeknownst to Brooke, is very ill). For the assignment, they end up hiking and camping together for a week and it helps heal old wounds and reconnect them. But it might not be enough for her to jump back into her dreams and back into his arms.

Liked
* This book is incredibly special. I loved Kilt Trip, I ADORE this book. The writing is the perfect balance of funny and emotional and expressive.
* As far as second chance romance goes, this one is absolutely beautiful. They both really hurt each other. They both still really love each other. They’re both adults trying to be honest.
* There is a subtext here about chasing dreams and dreams deferred. I loved how they pushed each other on this. This was an especially powerful part of the book and a fundamental part of their relationship.
* Mharai! What a wonderful character. A guide to both of them and such a force in this book. I loved how she was almost as much of a main character as Brooke and Jack.
* LOVED buddy reading this with @booksmartkate and @bibliolater.alligator!
* As with Kilt Trip, loved all the references to beautiful places in Scotland. Loved the hiking aspects of this too. The trek they go on is no joke.

Disliked
* My only nit on this one is that I would have liked more of Brooke’s backstory as well as more of her relationship with Mharai.

🫡 Tropes deployed: second chance, forbidden love, dual timeline, hiking/camping, grief/illness

Thank you to Alexandra Kiley and Harlequin Trade Publishing for this advanced reader copy. This book publishes on March 4, 2025.

'Logan’s brother, Jack is the hero of book 2 (SCOT AND BOTHERED). He’s a photographer and must hike the rugged 80-mile Skye Trail on the Isle of Skye with his writer ex, Brooke, to help their ailing mentor finish her memoir. It’s a dual timeline, second chance romance with lots of pining and adventure and only one tent!'

Ooh, I so want

Brooke forgave Jack way too fast. if the man who ruined my career tried to blandly apologize his way back into my life, i would throw him off a cliff. especially when he pulled the “you hurt me too 🥺” bullshit without any groveling whatsoever. and why do authors feel the need to name drop real songs in their books?? i find it so cringey it makes me want to stop reading the book.

Thank you @akileybooks for the arc of your new release🤍

First, any book set in Scotland and I’m already sold! It’s one of my favorite settings and I cannot get enough of it.

This was a romance full of longing, fighting attraction, being brave, and fighting for your dreams.

It had a bit of everything: humor, heart, sadness, and of course a lot of romance.

For the reader who loves:
• second chance romance
• only one tent
• highland coos
• atmospheric setting
