A humble plongeur and a wealthy widow contrive to create a 1st World War biplane and set off on the airshow circuit but, not everything and everyone moves as quickly and smoothly as the feisty Mrs ‘K’ had anticipated. The author’s diplomatic skills are stretched as he pilots his way through the bureaucracy of the Civil Aviation Authority and the foibles of a bespoke aircraft manufacturer. There are a number of ‘Pilot Stories’ on the bookshelves – this is one of the better ones. Light and chatty, it’s a book more about the human condition than a blow-by-blow account of how to build an Avro 504K – it’s almost like being in the bar with the author as he recounts his often very funny tale. A book which can be warmly recommended to even those whose interest in aviation ‘is not much greater than a mole’s’
