Making the King

CARA

I said “I do” to Rocco King at gunpoint.

My wedding was forged in darkness, and at the end of the ceremony, my hands were stained red by the blood of my dad.

I didn’t regret my decision when the police took me into custody, or when I was given a prison sentence for my patricide.

Three years on, I step out of prison only to be placed back in the care of the man who purchased me as his virgin bride.

His actions are confusing, his tenderness a contradiction to his hard exterior, and my desire to kill him turns into a desire of another kind.

I quickly learn that my husband is the better of the evils when my family returns to take me back to a life of slavery, and my husband does everything he can to protect me.

I never knew it could feel so intoxicating. So all-consuming.

ROCCO

I’d been tasked to buy, marry, and protect Cara Rodriguez.

She never asked to be mine, and she never had any control over the situation.

And now, even though she’s released from prison, she has no control over the fact that her parole terms state she must live with me.

I’m no fool, and I know she’s capable of killing me in my sleep. While annoying her is entertaining, I can see past her strong facade to the girl she was before all of this happened.

She’s all woman now, and resisting her is hard. But not giving her what she needs, what we both crave, is harder.

When her family tries to take her away, something deep inside me snaps, and I do everything in my power to make sure those vile predators don’t get their hands on her again.

Cara is mine, and I’m never letting her go.

Trigger Please note this is a Prequel in the Cruz Kings world. This is the only book featuring Cara & Rocco as the main characters. We promise there’s no evil cliffhanger, so the characters get their HEA at the end.

The book contains a troubled, alphahole MMC who won’t let anyone—not even h—stop him from being with her.

Just finished "Cruz Kings Origins" and wow, what a ride! This prequel is a must-read for fans of the Cruz Kings MC series and a perfect starting point for newbies. Cara and Rocco's backstory is everything—drama, chemistry, and spice galore! 🌶️💑 Watching the Cruz Kings MC form and seeing all the side characters' origins was super satisfying.

The book lays the foundation for the club beautifully, with high stakes and nonstop drama keeping me on the edge of my seat. The heat and intensity are perfectly balanced with a gripping plot and deep character development, making it impossible to put down.

This is essential reading for any fan of the series. If you haven't started the series yet, this prequel will hook you right in. Happy reading! 📖🔥✨

I enjoyed reading Cara and Rocco's story! This book has definitely led me to wanting to start this series! I came in at just the right time it seems. They had a very sad . Cara was let down by just about all the people who should have been there for her no matter what. Honeslty, her mother is a piece of work. Talk about continuing generational trauma! Whew, but I was happy that Cara was able to overcome the things that she grew up knowing as truth and opened up to Rocco. They have a very well developed relationship and I love when authors are able to give us just the right about of spicy balanced with good relationship building. Those are the stories that stick with you the most. It helps you feel invested in the characters and their relationship as well as the storyline that they are a part of. I hate when one gets sacrificed for another. I liked getting to know the side characters who I'm sure that everyone else knows if they've read the other books in this series already. Getting to meet them here definitly made me add the rest of this series to my TBR on Goodreads! I hope there is already a story for Cain!

The spice in this book was good! The communication between Rocco and Cara made this part better as well. They went from not talking about anything to breaking down and having conversations with each other. This led to some awesome spicy scenes between the two! I give this a 3 out of 5. Overall i give this book a 4 out of 5 because i really enjoyed the latter half of the story. There is definitely some things that I wanted more of. I think that some things might already be explained in the other books in this series so I gave this a little pass since I already have the next book downloaded! I'd recommend this book to anyone who likes MC romance with a nice dose of revenge in the plot. Also if you already enjoy this series getting to know Rocco and Cara a little more definitely wouldn't hurt!

“With him, I don’t feel ruined, or like the monster I really am. He makes me feel treasured and wanted.”

4⭐️Oooff. This one is dark straight out of the gate — no easing in, no gentle hand-holding — so definitely check in with yourself before diving in. If you’re in the mood for gritty, painful, origin-story darkness? You’ll eat this up. If not… maybe park it for later.

I haven’t read the original series yet, and honestly? Starting with the prequel felt like the perfect entry point. I loved being able to see how each character enters the world and begins their journey. The timeline works really well and gives you that slow, deliberate foundation-building that makes everything feel heavier and more meaningful. You can feel that these stories are laying the groundwork for what’s coming later, and I’m already invested knowing they’ll likely get their own books down the line.

One of the biggest standouts for me was the mental health representation. It’s clearly intentional and thoughtfully done — present without being overwhelming or performative. As a reader, it felt respectful and grounded rather than trauma dumped for shock value, which I really appreciated.

This was dark, gritty, and full of genuinely heartbreaking moments. There’s a lot of pain here — emotional, situational, and relational — but it’s balanced beautifully by the patience and tenderness between the characters. Watching them slowly become what the other needs, even in all that mess and damage, was incredibly satisfying.

Overall, I really loved this read. It hurt (in that good, cathartic way), it hooked me, and it absolutely did its job as a prequel. I’m very keen to continue on with the rest of the series and see where these stories go next.

Cara is standing before the priest saying her wedding vows... while her father holds a gun to her head. Her twin brother holding a gun to the priest's head... She is sixteen years old and her parents sold her to the man before her. Unlike her sister who had been sold to an older man, the man who purchased her was at least gorgeous and a few years older than her.

He might have been the perfect husband... if he hadn't bought her on the black market.

Three years later Rocco is standing outside the prison gates waiting for his wife to be released into his care. She was arrested at their travesty of a wedding three years ago when she shot and killed her monster father and had no idea the real reason for their marriage.

I loved this book! It is very well written and the characters are fully developed and relatable! This is the prequel to The Cruz Kings MC series and prepare for a ride.

This book is action-packed and full of danger from page one. Cara's family is twisted and amoral selling her older sister into prostitution at the age of twelve before selling her to an abusive husband. Realizing their mistakes with her sister they ensured that Cara was untouched so they could get the highest bid.

This dark romance deals with human trafficking and physical and sexual abuse so beware if that is a trigger for you. I love these characters. These authors dig deep and pull out all the feels - the abuses that Cara and Rocco lived through will break your heart, but their angsty relationship will have you laughing. Can't wait to read the other stories in this series and see what Cain comes up with next.

Highly recommend!

ARC review for 'Making the King' by B. Lybaek and Sarah JD

As a newcomer to the King Cruz world, I was pleasantly surprised by how easily I became invested in the story. This prequel novella did an excellent job of introducing me to the series and its characters.

Cara, the female protagonist, is a standout. Her strength, determination, and vulnerability make her a compelling and relatable character. I loved her fiery personality and the way she refused to back down in the face of adversity. Rocco, on the other hand, is intense, driven, and fiercely protective of Cara. His alpha tendencies are balanced by a softer side that's endearing and believable. Their banter and push-and-pull dynamic is electric, and their chemistry is undeniable.

The couple's tumultuous beginning sets the stage for a dramatic and emotional journey as they navigate their complicated pasts and work towards a future together. The tension builds slowly, culminating in a passionate and intense romance that's well worth the wait.

What I appreciated most about these characters is their depth and complexity. Rocco's tough exterior hides a heart of gold, while Cara's tough exterior belies a vulnerable inner self. Their relationship is far from easy, but their journey is authentic and satisfying.

Overall, this novella has won me over as a fan of the King Cruz series. I'm eager to explore more of this world and its characters.

B. Lybaek & Sarah JD have always been one of my favorite writing collaborations. They took significant care in creating a beautifully vivid world and amazing characters. I never felt overwhelmed or confused by the storyline. Making the King is the story that tells us how it all began. Starting with how the Cruz Kings became a MC and also gives us incite into the one relationship we always had so many questions about, Rocco and Cara. However, this dark romance deals with human trafficking and physical and sexual abuse, so beware of the TWs before diving in. This book is essential reading for any fan of The Cruz Kings MC series. If you haven't started the series yet, this prequel will hook you right in.

I loved this book! It is very well written with characters that are fully developed and relatable!! This is the prequel to The Cruz Kings MC series and you will need to be prepared for a wild ride. This book is action-packed and full of danger from page one.

I absolutely loved Rocco and Cara's story, it was full of darkness, spice and all the feels. It will keep you turning pages and wanting more. I loved Making the King from the very first chapter and couldn't put it down until the very end. If you like spicy dark MC romances, then this is the club for you. This is definitely a series I highly recommend!!! The Cruz Kings MC series is definitely a must read and one you will not be able to put down!!!

“Open your legs, Killer. Let me see how wet you are.”

An excellent prequel to the Cruz King’s world!

Rocco and Cara’s story was bittersweet, seeing how their relationship formed, all while knowing where they ended up in the Cruz King series.

I loved Cara's character - how she was tough and broken yet able to maintain her strength even while softening to Rocco's care. Rocco was a closet sweetheart. I cannot imagine the hell he must have seen spanning the end of this story to the beginning of the Cruz Kings series to make him become the hard-ass MC president. Here, he's the fluffy anti-hero who will do anything for his woman.

Medium burn and spicy. There are some very sweet and sexy first-time scenes, plus more racy scenes later.

I know this will be the only story we get of this duo, but I would love to see more!

I received a copy of this book from the publisher/author to review for Stephanie's Book Reports.

This is the story of Cara and Rocco. Buckle up this is one wild dark amazing read that I devoured. Cara like all girls has probably dreamed of her wedding day. That is exactly where this book starts. Cara standing at the altar being forced to marry Rocco. Things however are not like Cara thinks they are but her dad is really a piece of work. Rocco is there for a purpose. One that you will have to uncover as you read the book. We meet these characters and then they are separated for a while. When Rocco sees Cara again she has changed and trust me she is one woman that you do not want to mess with. I loved these characters. Rocco while bad to the bone and willing to do what he has to do for his group of men, really has a heart of gold that he is more than willing to show his new wife, if she will only pay attention. Cara, like I said is an amazingly strong female character. She is fierce and protective and can give better than she gets. She is not afraid to speak her mind and stand up to anyone. There are twists and turns and gosh you will not be able to put this book down. I so can not wait to see what is to come in The Cruz Kings Series. If it is anything like this prequel then we are in for the wildest ride and I for one can't wait.

What a start

What a wild ride Making The King is but a thoroughly enjoyable one. I have not read the series for which this is a prequel to, so I can tell you with full confidence you can read it as standalone. But I can also tell you that after reading MTK, you will absolutely be adding the series to TBR like I did.

Cowritten works always make me nervous, especially when both authors are new to me, as was the case for me with this book. However, the story flowed seamlessly, which is a true testament to the talent of both B. Lybaek and Sarah JD.

Rocco and Cara, the couple of this book, have a complicated beginning, to say the very least, and are kept apart before they are even able to celebrate their wedding night. When they are finally reunited, both must face the painful pieces of their past if they stand any chance at a future together.

I loved these characters individually, as much as I did as a couple. Rocco may have a tough exterior, but he has such a heart of gold despite the crap hand he's been dealt. Cara is a spitfire with her steel walls built up because of her own life experiences. Navigating their relationship is far from simple, but so worth it in the end.

OMG!! This is an incredible prequel to The Cruz Kings MC world. Rocco and Cara had me in a chokehold the whole way through. I fell in love with these two characters right from the start and knew that they were going to be amazing throughout the series.

Cara is a fierce warrior queen and even though she has been through hell and back she remains strong, fierce and unbreakable.

Rocco captured my heart instantly. This man (DAMN) was dangerous, protective and had a heart of gold. He would do anything for Cara and would protect her and love her until the bitter end.

These two were incredible together. They go through hell and back in order to get their happy ending, but it was so worth it in the end. Together they were a force to be reckoned with.

This story is incredible. It’s well written with such amazing characters. The storyline is gritty, raw, emotional, violent, suspenseful, twisted and filled with such passion and love from two fierce characters.

LOVED IT!!

“Rocco…You’re everything that’s right in this world. I never knew that men like you actually existed, and I definitely never believed I’d be able to love anyone. But you’ve made me see that there’s more to life than what I knew, and that love is worth fighting for.”

This was a really good book! I could not put it down. It definitely has me wanting to read the rest of The Cruz Kings MC series. I very much recommend this book.
I loved seeing Dante appear in the book; anyone who has read Dante's Storm will recognize him from that book. Based on the little appearance he made in the book, this book takes place many years before his story. Cain was a hilarious side character. Loved how he was portrayed. He definitely had me laughing throughout the book. His cray comedic personality brought something to the story.
This book has 4 epilogues, and the 2nd and 4th epilogues had me blushing. YKIYK.
Watching the relationship between Cara and Rocco grow to genuinely care for one another and need each other to heal their past trauma was wholesome. After everything they both went through, getting a redo on their wedding, this time for the right reasons, was something they both deserved for each other. The ceremony was perfectly written. I loved this quote in the book: "Evil forced us together, but it's love, understanding, and respect that binds us forever."
Also, the name Cara comes up with for the females in the MC, which had me laughing so hard, and again, YKIYK.

Making The King ( The Cruz Kings MC ) 🖤A Dark Forced Marriage Romance) prequel B .Lybaek and Sarah D - what a fantastic duo these two make . From page one I knew I was in trouble, I knew I was not going to be getting much sleep and oh man was I right . Rocco and Cara’s love story is the type that literally sucks you right in from the very first page and plays on all your emotions in ways you will not even see coming. You’ll be speechless, you’ll be screaming outta pure frustration, you’ll have times you’ll smile and laugh and then bam outta nowhere you’ll be balling your eyes out and rooting so freaking hard . Intrigue, suspense, lies , betrayal, forced marriage, non stop action , angst , humor , witty banter , love , passion, pain , insane chemistry, drama , family , friendships , dark , raw and gritty . Enemies to lovers and all the feels . Rocco is such a fiercely protective alpha hero and Cara well what’s not to love about a kick@ss heroine who’s tough and stubborn yet soft on the inside. Making The King is easily one of the best books I’ve read this year and should not be missed

“Making the King” is the Cruz King MC series prequel. Let me preface that I have not read any of the other books. “Making the King” can be read as a standalone, and I had no issue following it. A lot is happening in the story––action, twisted family angst, and spice.

Rocco and Cara’s relationship began quickly and untraditionally, only for Cara to be taken away to serve time for unaliving her father at her wedding. When Cara is released, she has toughened up tenfold. But what toughened her was not just what brought her in. She holds trauma from other things that have happened to her, and there’s also her messy family she still has to deal with, too and the shady sex trafficking they are involved in.

Rocco is described as the “morally grey alphahole,” but he also has a traumatic past. I loved how he connected with Cara, and she also helped him. As with many dark romances, there are TW/CWs, and “Making the King” has quite a few. The spice is very good. And I liked the other supporting characters as well.

I look forward to more from this series.

Cara and Rocco’s Story

I absolutely loved getting to dive into Cara and Rocco’s story. After seeing them in the other Kings books it was great getting to know where it all began for them.

Cara, as I already expected, is such a strong and resilient woman. The things she went through with her mother were awful and to known how she ends up in the rest of the series just completely makes you understand and love her even more.

Rocco was an unexpected but at the same time expected surprise. Lol We have always known him as such a hard a** and take no s*** kinda of person but in this book we get to really see the soft side of him. Of course he’s still incredibly intense and protective but you can truly see his relationship with Cara grow and that soft side of him be let out around her.

Absolutely loved the spice and side characters. It was great seeing characters we already know about from pervious books. Overall a great book and “beginning” to the Kings.

Plot: 5
Spice: 3.5

I had no idea what to expect in this book but I absolutely loved it! I haven’t read The Cruz Kings MC series yet, but after finishing this book I’m ready to dive right into it!

From the very beginning I knew I was going to love Cara’s character! She had a terrible upbringing with monsters for parents, yet she grew into this strong and fierce bad@$$ who refused to let anyone take advantage of her. I also really loved Rocco’s character and how he always tried to help Cara, even though she legit wanted to unalive him at first! 😂 Their entire story and the way their relationship grew was utter perfection! Rocco never once tried to tame Cara but instead encouraged her to aim her darkness at those who deserved her wrath. Brilliant! 👌

I read ahead to find out what the next book is about, and I’m really excited to find out what’s become of all the characters from this book! I’m really hoping to see lots of Cara and Rocco throughout the series, but also all of the side characters mentioned in this one! I need to know what happens next!

This is the prequel in a new series, and this is Rocco and Cara’s story.
Rocco was tasked to buy, protect, and marry Cara, but Cara is tough and stubborn and is sent to prison on her wedding day for a crime she does not regret. When Cara is released, her parole conditions state she must stay with Rocco, who is fiercely protective of her, but he does not try to tame her fierce spirit, and they complement each other perfectly.
This is a well written story which is an action packed, emotional roller coaster, which is raw, dark, gritty, and intense, with enemies / lovers, angst, betrayal, forced marriage, suspense, drama, trauma, forced proximity, humor, witty banter, challenges, healing, undeniable chemistry, retribution, and organized crime, which leads to an entertaining, tragic, unpredictable, twisted, and spicy, thrilling page turner.
I look forward to reading more from this talented author whose work I highly recommend.

“Rocco…” Blinking rapidly, I try to get rid of the tears gathering behind my lids. “You’re everything that’s right in this world. I never knew that men like you actually existed, and I definitely never believed I’d be able to love anyone. But you’ve made me see that there’s more to life than what I knew, and that love is worth fighting for.”

Imma be completely honest, MC books aren’t really my style but if B. Writes it, I’m gonna read it lol! As a newer reader of hers I hadn’t read the other books in the series but if you need me I’ll be immersed in the rest of the series for the next few weeks lol!! I was in love with Cara’s strength from page one and Rocco’s desire to protect her from chapter 2! These two were so crazy but so in love and I loved every second of it!! I loved getting to see how they formed the club and can’t wait to see how it grows over the next few books!! It read so well as a standalone and I can’t wait to see how the rest of the series goes!! ⭐️: 5/5🌶️: 4/5

I started reading this with no preconceived ideas and I have to admit my mind went off in one direction but it was the wrong way so, a bit like Cara, I had to reassess! To me, the book seemed like a book of two halves; the story of Rocco and Cara and the story of how the Cruz Kings MC started.
Cara may initially appear meek and mild but that hides a really strong, tough and somewhat ruthless personality. Similarly, Rocco gives the impression that he is totally alpha and “full of himself “ but this hides someone suffering from past trauma as well as a character who will go to great lengths to protect those he cares about. Cara and Rocco together are one scary couple who you would not want to cross!
The plot includes drama, some darker elements and plenty of spice. As far as the other characters go, Cain just steals the show!

Oh man, this book was amazing!!! I loved Making the King from the very first chapter and couldn't put it down until the very end. This book is the Prequel to The Cruz Kings MC series, and from this book, this series will be a chef's kiss!!! I am so ready to dive into this deliciously dark and twisted. I loved the world that B. Lybaek and Sarah JD created, filled with action, suspense, angst, spice, and retribution!!! This book brought out so many emotions while reading this book. My heart broke and soared, my stomach dropped, and I fist-pumped a few times. The storyline is original and page-turning. The characters are complex, have experienced trauma, and have an explosive chemistry. The side characters were intriguing, and I can't wait to get my hands on their books. I loved how the authors introduced me to a new series; I didn't feel overloaded or confused with storylines. They took significant care in creating a beautifully vivid world and amazing characters.

Cara was a total BA from beginning to end. I loved her stubbornness and her sheer will to survive. I also loved her dark side; it was nice to have an FMC that didn't try to act all tough but wither at the first sign of danger. She was vulnerable at some points, but it was just the perfect amount to show she was real. Rouchus was intense, determined, and ruthless. I loved his Alpha streak when it came to Cara. I loved how protective of Cara he was. I enjoyed how he was an Alphahole when he needed it but had a little cinnamon roll deep, deep down inside for his Queen. I enjoyed their banter, push and pull, and their undeniable chemistry. Let's not forget the spice; it was off the chain!!! I loved the angst and the build-up to the powder keg that sets off their epic romance.

Oh I loved this book! As Cara and Rocco face the things that are thrown at them, there are mountains to climb, and rivers to cross, but they do it all so well after being thrown together. The characters and the plot are so well written and there is plenty of spice to heat things up! This story really sets the scene about how the Cruz Kings MC came to be, and the strength of the love between Cara and Rocco. This story had me hooked from the start, and the side characters are all so intriguing and well written as well - it makes you want books about all of them! I hope there is definitely more to come in this world! Another fantastic read by two authors who really know how to write all the emotion and drama and keep you wanting more!

This was such a great dark, intense, violent romance! I loved every second of it. Cara is forced by her repulsive parent's actions to become hardened and vengeful. While she becomes a fiery, hardened woman, there is still a vulnerability within her that while slow, she eventually shows Rocco that side of her. Rocco is not who he seems, and he takes his time revealing his true self to Cara. He is the ultimate alpha protective man toward Cara, she just doesn't realize it at first. These two have chemistry that jumps right off the page from the beginning but circumstances of each of their lives and beliefs about the other leads to a slow burn and a wonderful buildup of their relationship. This book was such an intense read and kept me riveted the entire time. I could not put it down!

“Making the king” is a prequel to the “Cruz kings MC” series.

In “making the king” we find out how it all started with Rocco and Cara’s epic romance and how the Cruz kings MC was formed. I am a huge fan of this phenomenal series, Sarah JD and B. Lybaek knocked this story right out of the park.

Cara is probably one of the most strongest heroines I have ever come across, she has been through h£ll and back but she owned it. Her strength and her fire was absolute incredible to read.

Rocco is a fierce protector. He’s an alpha through and through. There are some vulnerable moments that we see from Rocco which only made me love him more. Rocco and Cara were absolutely perfect for each other. They are end game.

“Making the king” is a dark MC romance, that’ll you’ll definitely want to devour. This is a thrilling adventure that you won’t want to stop reading, and I can’t recommend it enough!

Wow what a start to the book, talk about starting off with a bang.

Rocco our mmc has a heart of gold but it’s kept in his hard exterior making it very difficult for people to see the real him. Cara is a real tough cookie after growing up with a family like hers , that mother good lord she’s something
I loved both characters but enjoyed them much more as a couple. l especially loved when they began braking down each others was uncovering each others pasts and communicating with each other . This also led to some great spicy scenes .

This book is a prequel and gives you a great insight and feel for the rest of the series.

When i started this, I wasn't sure what to expect. I do have to say that i was intrigued by the first page. Poor Cara, she doesn't have a choice in the way she gets to live her life or who she gets to live it with. Don't let her fool you, though she is a lot tougher than she looks. Cara is having to learn that things are not the way she was always led to believe. Rocco comes off as an @ss, but there is more to him than meets the eye, and he will do anything to make sure cara feels safe . I will say this don't mess with either of them cause they are scary.

This is a dark mafia story and make sure you check the author’s page for TW. The MFC is a tough cookie but she has to be for all she had to endure. But as read her story I was amazed at her strength, courage and fight she has in her. Rocco is perfect for Cara because he is strong and encourage her to be her own person and loved her a whole lot. There is a super hot explosive chemistry between the two and gets hotter more into the story. There a lot of action with explosions and guns that goes until the end. Great ending.

📖 Making the King

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
🌶️🌶️🌶️/5

💭My Thoughts:

I absolutely loved this ARC! Making the King is a prequel dark contemporary romance. This was a slow burn with plenty of spice later in the story.

Rocco and Cara’s story was enjoyable to watch their relationship form. Cara was tougher than she appeared and Rocco had a soft interior. I can’t wait for the next book in the series!

“Open your legs killer. Let me see how wet you are.”

If you enjoy:

👑 Virgin FMC
▪️ Enemies to Lovers
… then add this to your TBR!

I love this world so much!!!

Making the King is the prequel to The Cruz Kings MC series and is Cara and Roccos story.

I absolutely devoured the other books in this series and was so excited for Cara and Rocco and their story made me so freaking happy!!!

Cara is so freaking strong. I adore her so much. Rocco is so in love with Cara and is so protective. He is so dreamy. I love him!

This was the perfect addition to this world and if you haven't started this series yet, you really should! You won't regret it I promise!!!!
