Thanos: a giant purple monster with a thing for power gems and a love of hot skeleton pants Death. In a stunningly original turn, Donny Cates writes a story where, thanks to a power gem, Thanos chases after Death’s love. Did I say original? I meant unimaginative!

I don’t understand what there is to enjoy about the turd that is Thanos Wins. Thanos punches a variety of characters, including an old version of himself (literally the supervillain equivalent of the schoolyard bully taunting “Why’re you hitting yourself?!”), and then the book’s over – so what?!

Were people blown away by the reveal of who Ghost Rider was? Or seeing Thanos hitting the Surfer? Or trudging through the self-important narration for such a laughably mindless tale? It’s such an uncreative story with one repetitive, uninteresting and predictable fight after another. Cates basically replaced Jason Aaron’s Old Thor with Thanos.

Thanos worked fine as the one-dimensional bad guy in The Infinity Gauntlet but he isn’t suited to anything else, as this solo series has repeatedly shown. Boring garbage – Thanos Wins, readers lose!

Now, I normally hate Thanos. As a lifelong Marvelite, I actually find the amount of page space Marvel gives what is essentially Jim Starlin's knock-off of DC's Darkseid character a little depressing.

This Thanos book, however, was such an action-packed, messed up riot of a tale that I found myself enjoying it despite it being a Thanos story. I could even forgive it for being YET ANOTHER BLOODY TIME TRAVEL STORY, it was that good.

The highlight of the book for me? The revelation of the identity of the new Ghost Rider. I'm not going to spoil it here but it knocked me for six. Great stuff.

Oh, and the artwork was pretty damned good, too, which always helps.

I didn't seem to enjoy this as much as most of my friends. Thanos gets transported to a future where he's won, destroying most of the galaxy and meets his future self. From there it goes exactly where you expect the story to go. It's just a so-so story that turns into a big punch em up for a while.

Cosmic Ghost Rider is an OK character, but who he is, makes no sense. He's basically characterized as Cosmic Deadpool, cracking jokes. His past self is the complete opposite in character. He's if you must know. He's supposedly crazy but you'd only know that because he tells you he's insane repeatedly. Death in this is just a ripoff of Neil Gaiman's Death from Sandman. Cates is capable of so much more than he does here.

Why, it will end the same way every story that has ever been told has ended...

With death.

Death,

And nothing more.

As Thanos gets weaker with age, he recruits himself from the past. Younger Thanos has a lot of questions, and things only get messier when he finds out that he's been brought back to the future, to kill himself.

This story involves time travel, the Cosmic Ghost Rider as Thano's right-hand man, a Thanos on Thanos fight, and Hulk as a crazed and bloodthirsty pet... I mean??? C'mon.
I thought this was a crazy ass concept... But I kind of liked it.

I’ve heard nothing but great things about Donny Cates’ volume of Thanos, so while I’m still impatiently waiting for Infinity War to premiere in my country, I decided to check it out. And it’s... fine, I guess. The artwork is pretty, the concept is kinda cool (although I feel like it‘s ripping off the first two volumes of Jason Aaron’s Thor: God of Thunder), and there are some interesting ideas here. Then again, Thanos himself is such a snooze — he’s like an annoying emo teenager who likes death so much he wants to boink her. The Cosmic Ghost Rider (a new character so popular that he’s getting his own spin-off comic) is fun as he is, but his identity and origin don’t make any sense. The design of Death herself is clearly taken from Neil Gaiman’s Sandman. The Silver Surfer in this is just... bizarre. And I can go and nitpick about it for a lot longer. In short, Cates is juggling some pretty unoriginal ideas here and doesn’t really do much to make them stand out. The result is readable and nice to look at, but not particularly memorable. Also, I really hope the movie version of Thanos is more interesting than this, because this guy here is kind of a dumbass who needs to grow up.

Friggen bonkers! I read this so I could get the origin story of Cosmic Ghost Rider and I have to tell ya...I wasn't disappointed.

Donny Cates is on fire right now and with good reason. If Marvel is smart they will continue to let him do whatever it is he wants to do.

Artist, Geoff Shaw is on picture duty (He worked with Cates on God County) and once again he nails every single panel. The book was a delight to look at.

Although there wasn't a whole lot of depth here the fun factor fired on all cylinders and it is because of this I give this book a full five stars. The pacing was just right - the stuff Cates does (I'm purposely leaving it all out cuz it's better to just see it for yourself) with the story...yeah.

Homerun for me.

Donny, stop, I'm serious. It's like I want to read something bad from you so I'm not completely fucking jealous of how good you are.

Okay enough of me fanboying.

Who is Thanos? Well after infinity War the dude has lunchboxes so I'm sure 90% of people reading this know who he is now. The big purple guy who killed a lot of people. Well now he's sent from a special someone in the future to help him fight. Who else could it be but OLD MAN Thanos. yes. I shit you not. Old Thanos has killed pretty much everyone but there is one who challenges him and now he can't face him alone. So current Thanos is there to help him.

Good: Loved the majority of the dialog. Epic when needed, funny, and a breeze to read through. Love the hell out of the pacing, never a dull moment. A lot of great character's introduced, the best being Cosmic Ghost Rider of course and his backstory. The whole story is really interesting and kind of ends on a bitter sweet note that can't help but love.

Bad: Wasn't in love with the annual. Cute parts aside it was kind of just a okay issue amongst the rest of this thrilling tale.

Overall great title. Donny keeps pushing these excellent stories out and they are just never freaking dull. I love it. He is bringing Marvel back to the fun I once had. Thank you man. 4.5 out of 5.

Donny Cates takes the reins after lemires starting run at Thanos. Where Lemire brought all his own tricks to this character, Cates makes this own and more. Cated adds a zense of horror to the story which is his forte and its amazing. Thanos has never been so mad and evil. The artwork complimented the story but the story was pure genius storytelling. Highly recommend this series!!

What a hell of a lot of fun. Thanos Wins is, more or less, an alternate reality story in which Thanos has finally defeated all the heroes of the Marvel Universe and eliminated most life in the Universe. Our modern day Thanos is brought face-to-face with his victorious counterpart through some time stone-shenanigans and copious violence ensues.

While I'll admit that there's not a whole lot of depth to the story, it is immensely satisfying from a comics' nerd perspective (Cosmic Ghost Rider! Death of the Avengers!). Pretty much from start to finish, I loved the loose and free way Cates plays with all the tools of the Marvel sandbox. The book feels surprising, fresh, and fully embraces its absurd and violent tone.

Guys, this isn't Watchmen, but it is at least similar to Old Man Logan. If you, like me, wish that there were more comics that let creators go loose with all that their wacky universes have to offer, you'll be into this. Definitely fun and worth the time of Marvel enthusiasts.

Oh, and you definitely need no prior knowledge of the other volumes of Thanos. Go in blind!

Holy crap, these battles are epic AF! The end of the universe never looked as good. The cast is nice and small, featuring some of the most powerful beings in the universe. We get their backstories and quickly return to the preparation for the final battle. Even though it may not sound like it, it was all fueled by love.

Thanos is captured by Cosmic Ghost Rider and brought into the future where he meets his older self. King Thanos requires help in finding his long lost love, Death. To do this he must kill his last and most powerful enemy in the universe - the corrupted Silver Surfer.

While Lemire's vol. 2 was already a bit boring for me Cates just put the pedal to the metal and took me for an entertaining ride.

So almost everything is dead and destroyed thanks to Thanos but he's still not satisfied as his love, Death, is not satisfied either. He sends his "Black Right Hand" to fetch his younger self to help him kill the last opponent, The Fallen One.

The story is well written, the origin of Cosmic Ghost Rider is really cool and so is the Rider himself.

The only shame about this book is the Thanos Annual which is absolute trash.

A really interesting comic that explores what happens if Thanos wins. The majority is written from the perspective of Cosmic Ghost Rider, a really cool character I hadn't heard of before. The comic takes big leaps with surprising twists that nearly all hit the mark.

This was such a great book, it tells the story of Thanos as he is taken to the future by Cosmic Ghost Rider to meet his future self at the end of time when he has defeated everyone and all that remains is him and he needs his help to defeat one final foe, the fallen one aka Silver Surfer Black! And its sucha great story as we see them clash, the origins of this Frank Castle, the untimely end of the universe by hid hand, Hulk, his quest to impress death and the inevitable end of the universe and Thanos's role in it! Its just so good, the whole story, the concept and having such great moments and that battle with Silver Surfer was just epic, and those introductory pages where he defeats the Chitauri, and his line "Kings do not beg" just sums up the might of Thanos! One of the best books period! The art by Geoff Shaw is just too good!

Highly recommended. The whole series. Especially if you're a Thanos fan.

I read this book via Kindle Unlimited.

I mean, the entire story is kind of given away in the title isn't it? Thanos wins. He wins against the Avengers, he wins against every army he has ever come up against, conquered every world he has ever wanted, and now he has nothing else to kill. Just him and his servant, the Cosmic Ghost Rider (or Frank Castle aka The Punisher). But he needs something else. Something only one person can give him, himself. CGR goes back into the past to recruit younger Thanos to kill older Thanos so that Thanos can finally be with Death herself and get what he has wanted this whole time, love. Obviously this comes with it's up and downs. Thanos is annoying and stubborn on his own, but up against himself, it's even worse. We also get a lot about CGR's backstory and how he became the CGR.

Donny Cates really knows how to tell a story. The more I read from him, the more I'm impressed with his work, and the art in this book was great too. Overall, a big big fan of this story. I need to go and read the first two volumes ASAP, but this also can be read as a standalone as I wasn't too confused going in. As long as you know who Frank Castle is, you'll be fine.

Y’see? So much more fun than that traditional cosmic Marvel shite that Jeff Elmore was attempting in volume 1 of this series. So much less pomp and posturing, more to the point of seeing a character struggle with something, even if it’s just struggling against himself.

Hell, for a Marvel Legacy book, this was pretty good.

This was really good, even though the story is kind of a downer (seriously, what is all this fascination with Thanos?). Great artwork throughout by Geoff Shaw--this is a real step up from his work on Buzzkill and even God Country. About the only drawback (and what kept this from being a 5-star review) is the inclusion of the Thanos Annual, which detracts from the otherwise downbeat, somber nature of the rest. Cates is a great writer and this is one of the best things he's done...

So, not only are we pretending the Starlin OGNs don't exist, we're stealing concepts from them now?

Thanos meets his older self. This older self has killed damn near everything in existence, and wants to show off to someone. And/or fight.

This book introduces Cosmic Ghost Rider. The story is pretty over-the-top. The art is good.

Definitely far and away my favorite volume of the three. It's like a greatest hits Marvel record blasted on full volume. The Ghost Rider stuff is just a cherry on the sundae of what is already an absolute blast of a comic. This book is one you read and it constantly reminds you why comics rule.
