ONCE WE SMELL YOU. WE NEVER GIVE UP THE HUNT.

"I wonder what my son looks like now." This thought reels through my mind every day that he isn't with me. For seventeen years my family and I searched for my son, using the resources accumulated by centuries of living among humans until finally he was found. Not only has he turned into the human-vampire hybrid of his DNA, but he is also a powerful witch. I am my son's mother, Ana, a human-vampire hybrid who will do anything to keep my son safe. Knowing the future based on my sister’s time-splitting gifts, I thought I knew what was coming for all of us. Hunted and tortured by those who abhor us is exactly what I expect. But feeling that affliction from my own son is a twisted knife in my back.

Young Blood is the haunting first installment of The Hybrid Series—a dark fantasy steeped in magic, grief, and the brutal beauty of survival. Perfect for readers who crave human-vampire lore, hybrid legacies, and a slow burn threaded with heartbreak.

Had potential but came up short

I was really intrigued about a world with human/vampire hybrids and the hunt for a lost son but was left feeling vastly underwhelmed and confused by the plot and overall flow of the story. Other than reading a quick blurb about this book, I really had no idea what I was getting into or any real expectations about what I will find.

One thing that I liked about the story is that the reader is thrown right into some action in the first chapter. The story starts off pretty fast-paced but then continues in this weird pacing of being both fast and slow as well as having the feeling that a lot was happening but also not happening at the same time.

There were many instances where the writing felt like I was reading a bullet point list of events happening instead of someone telling you a story. Because the story is told through the FMC’s POV in first person, I wanted the story to feel as if someone else was telling me their absolute favorite story instead of reading talking points off of cue cards during a school presentation.

The plot shifted from present day to flashbacks pretty frequently and though the flashbacks were interesting, I kept wondering about their relevance to the overall storyline based on the blurb that I read. I think these flashbacks were supposed to connect the reader with some character backgrounds and maybe even some vampire/hybrid lore but instead they fell a little too flat for me…In fact, I think I would’ve enjoyed the story more if it had been a vampire origin story of a black girl living in Washington DC in the 1950s rather than those moments just being reduced to minor flashbacks. I did enjoy the diversity in the cast of characters as they all hailed from different regions and time periods around the world.

The book is fairly short at just over 250 pages but it felt very long with the writing style that felt choppy, a chaotic plot line, repetitive phrases/events, and a cast of characters that I felt absolutely no connection or sympathy for at all. There are a couple of somewhat descriptive 🌶️ scenes that I wasn’t expecting (both in content as well as timing in plot line) that felt like they didn’t contribute anything to the plot of the story or even as fan service moments for those who tend to enjoy a lot of heat in their reading.

I definitely feel like this book had a ton of potential but seemed to lack in quality editing or even peer reviewing/beta reading before publishing. I feel like there were a lot of tropes/plot devices and elements that the author loves and maybe wanted to include in this story but they didn’t seem to work well together or could’ve worked better if the story was allowed to breathe or flushed out a bit more.

Everyone has their writing style and maybe the way this author writes just doesn’t work for me. I do hope that the writer continues to improve their craft (because like every other creative endeavor, there’s always something to learn and something to get better at).

Over all this was a good read. I had a little trouble keeping up with the society being built, but the descriptions were great and the story is well written.

This book is PACKED with adventure and excitement. Admittedly it took a bit to get into it, but this is the first book in a series so lots of world building and setting the scene/story/characters had to be done.

I love the storyline; there are vampires, werewolves, hybrids, and witches.. some of which are super powerful, and evil. You’re taken on a quest to get back a son, taken from his parents to harness his powers, only to see that people are not always what we think they are.

If anything, I almost wish there was moreeee. But maybe I just like fluff in a book lol

While there is some resolution, there is another door opened that leads nicely to a second book in the series - looking forward to it!

What a fantastic fantasy read , such a different concept I love reading something new and fresh
This book had me at the edge of my seat and I felt so many emotions going through the story , lots of twist and turns . This story I feel touches on some very important topics within humanity that are still struggles even to this day I love when books have important messages within the pages you read . Dive into a world of vampires , hybrids , witches and lots of magic . Also to note there's a cliffhanger and im impatiently waiting for number two .

I wanted to like this book so bad. The premise sounded so good. But I was so confused the entire time.
The flashbacks weren’t clear when they were starting and ending, I couldn’t figure out what the time period was as it takes place in this world, and there wasn’t any clear world building. You are just thrown right in and expected to know how everything works.
With the main plot point being to find their son it almost felt like it happened too quickly and easily and nothing really made sense. Everyone was related but some pretended they weren’t and how old are the characters anyway? Nothing was really clear.
And the ending? That hurt my brain more, such a dramatic cliff hanger that didn’t help tie anything together.
I may read the next book just to see if I can get some answers but I’m currently undecided on that at this moment.

-1 a star just because it was so slow in the beginning for me. Otherwise great read! I enjoyed the world building, the different perspectives gave a lot of needed insight into the different characters. As a mother myself I could relate to Ana in her quest to find her son. Very much looking forward to the next book and more great stories from this author!

They are never going to give up. They are never going to stop hunting you. All it takes is one wiff of you.

“I wonder what my son looks like now.” This is the thought that goes through her mind every day he isn't with her. And for seventeen years, their entire family, including his mother, searches for the missing heir. They spear no expense, and the family has a considerable wealth, having lived for centuries living among the humans, till they finally find the son that was lost.

His mother is shocked to find to find that her son has not only become the human-vampire hybrid that was written into his DNA. But, more than that, he is also a very powerful witch. And as his mother, she will do whatever it takes to keep him safe, no matter the cost.

She is blessed in knowing the future because of her sister's time-splitting gifts, and she honestly thought that she knew what to expect in the future and what was coming for them. She thought that those who hunted, tortured, and abhor them are all that they have to expect. She is shocked, though, when she feels affliction from her own son, it's like someone has stabbed her in the back and twisted the knife.

Young Blood by Medallio Green is the 1st book of The Hybrid Series. It is a fantasy series based around human-vampire hybrids with magical realism and, of course, a bit of romance sprinkled in.

YOU'RE MENTAL HEALTH MATTERS!!! Please read the trigger warnings that include blood, Gore, Unaliving, Kidnapping, Suiciadal Ideation/Attempt, and Grief. Please be aware of these triggers as they can be harmful to the mental health of some readers.

I can honestly say that I really enjoyed Young Blood, the first book in The Hybrid Series. It's packed with action, adventure, and so much excitement that you are drawn in and just want to get to know the world and the characters, and you want to know what happens next.

This story arc, the characters, and the storyline, it is all so compelling. I loved that this book included hybrids, vampires, humans, werewolves, witches, and, of course, you can't forget about the human race. I loved how realistic the witches and the magic felt. And I loved that not all the witches were on the side of good. Some of them were so powerful and on the side of evil, and you couldn't always tell who was who.

We start off being taken on an adventure to find a son who was ripped away from his parents by someone who wanted to take him so they could take his powers for themselves, and we get the chance to see, right from the beginning, that people are all wearing masks and we can't always tell the good from the bad.

I wanted more of this book. I wanted to know more about the characters, I wanted to know more about the world. I wanted to go on more adventures with the characters, I wanted more romance. I just wanted more. Maybe I am just being greedy because I just really enjoyed this book.

We did get a bit of resolution to the main plot of this book, but in that door, closing new doors opened for future books, and I think that was perfect for the second and future books.

I am really looking forward to reading more in this series, and I can't wait to read more from this author.

This book was difficult to follow and understand. Sadly the writing style was not for me and the pacing was very odd. First, we’re thrown in the deep end as there’s no world building but a huge conflict. The son of a hybrid and a vampire (her imprint/mate) is kidnapped by his grandmother (the hybrid’s mom). This was all for told by the mom’s sister who has vision of the future.

Liam who’s the son of the vampire and hybrid will be a powerful witch. I also think he is a vampire and witch, since his dad is a vampire and mom’s a witch (I think). Honestly, the whole family dynamics were a little confusing and hard to understand because there was no world building. You just thrown into the deep end of the pool and supposed to understand everything that’s going in when there are so many complexities.

I read the book trying to gain a better understanding of the universe, situation, and family. However, I am sorry to say I kept getting more confused. There were flashbacks to high school and Liam’s kidnapping but there wasn’t separation from present timeline. No change in font or a subheading made the flashbacks extremely difficult to understand.

Overall, the book was not for me personally due to the pacing, the writing style, and the world.

Disclaimer: I was on the ARC team for this book. However, all of my thoughts and opinions are entirely my own!

2.99🌶️ (on my spice scale)
I enjoyed this story a lot, though it was a bit slow up until 50% in. The characters are very likable (aside from the villains, though I believe they are meant to be unlikeable). At times, the flashbacks were a little jarring, but you get used to them pretty quickly. I would absolutely love more about Malía, I want to get to know her character more, and from her perspective rather than someone else's, she is a very interesting character to me. I also want to know everything that Chrysanthia is hiding! There is a lot I'm excited to hopefully see in future books ^-^ and don't get me started on how much I adore Dorian and Ana's relationship! They are a couple you will root for and enjoying any scenes of them together!

Overall, I found this to be an enjoyable and unique story with plenty to intrigue you for the next book as well!!I definitely recommend it ^-^ also look at how pretty this cover is!!

Young Blood is an enchanting fantasy series that explores the world of human-vampire hybrids, enriched with elements of romance and adventure.

Before diving in, readers should be aware of some trigger warnings: themes of blood, gore, death, suicidal ideations, and grief are present throughout the narrative.

I found the first book thoroughly engaging and can’t wait for the second installment to be released later this year. The concept of human-vampire hybrids is intriguing and is executed with finesse. The pacing of the adventure kept me captivated, making every moment enjoyable. Green’s character development shines as each character’s unique personality and strengths come to life, making them relatable amidst the turmoil they face. This series is definitely worth the read!.

What an incredible debut from a first-time author and the first installment in a series. Writing something so action-packed while developing characters AND world-building is a tall order.

I enjoyed how the author really paints a picture of the characters and their surroundings.

I really enjoyed the longer flashbacks and many references to music that set various scenes, and in particular the lead up to the main character's "origin story" ( I don't want to give too much away).

The struggle I had was some poorly-timed hot sex scenes because I didn't know how or why the characters would prioritize that over their (or their loved ones) safety in varied precarious situations.

Overall, huge talent and potential and I am excited to read more from this author as she further develops the characters and their worlds.

This book started out as a slow burn but then the second half really took off. Vampires, hybrids and witches, oh my. Ana and Dorian’s son Liam was kidnapped and they would do anything to get him back. The road was very slippery and dangerous and what they endured wasn’t for the weak. I really enjoyed this story and looking forward to book 2. I recommend reading this book.

"ONCE WE SMELL YOU. WE NEVER GIVE UP THE HUNT."

This is the first time I've read a book by this author and I enjoyed reading it. It's fast paced, but also has a slow build aswell, introducing us to this new world and characters. It's action packed and takes us on a crazy journey. I couldn't put it down once I started. I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

Ana

Ana is in a hunt for her missing son. This book starts you off pretty fast. The concept and characters were great. It is a bit of a slow burn as the focus is elsewhere. I really liked the premise, character building, and insights. The flow was off for me. Overall, an interesting concept that I'd like to see flourish.

This took me a moment to get into with the action and fast pacing. I wish there was a bit more background fluff to it to help make those attachments to the characters and the world building. I am very much looking forward to the next book in the series!

Dorian.

She is a mom out to save her son, a daughter dealing with the trauma of her family, and a partner dealing with love and despair.

I especially love how the author mixed in Ana’s memories into the story without it being jarring or taking you out of the narrative. It was exceptionally well done.

I took off a star because my personal preference is to have a bit more description than what the author gave in this book. However, that’s a small thing that did not detract from this book.
