I’m biased because Adam is a close friend, and I was kindly given an early copy, but this is genuinely brilliant! I am so impressed and equally bursting with pride for his debut novel.

As a queer YA story following Cam, Finn and their friendship group, this ticks all the boxes. It’s hilarious, easy to read, and beautifully explores many raw emotions during a pivotal time as a teenager. I loved the different locations and experiences, the group dynamics (Geri is a firm favourite), and the exploration of what it’s like to be part of or an ally of the LGBTQ+ community. It’s very British, so it has the throwback feeling from when I was at school. Watch this space; this is just the beginning for Adam!

I didn’t have high expectations for this book because I’ve read a lot of gay YA over the years, but I have to say I was quite impressed. While it is not groundbreaking and remains fairly predictable, I enjoyed the overall story. However, none of the characters really stood out to me. They all felt quite two-dimensional and underdeveloped. Most of the conflicts in the book are resolved too quickly, which I am not a fan of. Additionally, there are many time jumps where an extra chapter or two would have been beneficial.

One aspect I absolutely disliked was the “homophobe turns out to be closeted” narrative. It’s such an overdone trope and I’m starting to find it quite insensitive. The idea that a character’s homophobia is just a result of their own hidden sexuality is not only clichéd but also diminishes the real and complex reasons behind homophobia. It feels like a lazy explanation that undermines the depth of the issue, especially since the homophobe in question is a side character. I find it weird that many authors still include this in their books. Is it some sort of secret fantasy? I don’t know. But I immediately get bored when I’m presented with a closeted homophobe.

To end on a positive note, I think this book is a solid addition to the queer YA genre, and I hope the author continues to write more because I see potential. I wouldn’t be surprised if his next book turns out to be a 5-star read for me. ⭐️

Whilst Hiding Him was a wholesome coming out/coming of age story, the plot and characters lacked depth, and the writing was poor. I would say it’s not young adult but more for early teens.

Comforting like a warm hug, I've been following Adam Hattan's YouTube channel for years, so it definitely piqued my interest when he announced he was venturing into writing — I'm happy to say Hiding Him is a worthy first-time effort that encapsulates the positivity and casual humor that have been a staple in his online presence.

As a longtime viewer to Adam's content, there's an extra layer of delights as there are numerous recurring video references sprinkled throughout. The coming-of-age story, while nothing groundbreaking, is heartwarming and flows nicely from one event to the next, and the romance definitely contains a dash of steam here and there!

One thing to note for non-British readers, be aware of the British terms utilizes throughout (such as sixth form), as some Googling might be necessary. (bigger publishing houses would usually re-edit for international market, but unsure if there's plan for it for this novel).

Overall, Hiding Him is a great extension to Adam Hattan's body of work, one that feels genuine, and demonstrate he can tell an engaging story. Excited to see where this direction will take him down the road (hopefully an adult romance is in the cards)!

I went into this thinking it would be a delightful read - and in some ways it was. I found myself smiling at plot points and my stomach dropping at others. However, and I hate to say this, it was poorly written. The whole thing read like something I’d have written at the age of 11 with overly descriptive language and interesting grammar choices. The plot was cute yet cliché and I expected near enough every twist. Finn didn’t feel developed enough as character, and I felt like I only saw him as this ‘hunk’ that Cam loved and not much more substance. I also found a lot of the language describing his attraction to Finn, the teacher, the instructor etc. quite uncomfortable? Then again I haven’t been in a 16 year old teenage boys shoes so maybe that’s what goes on in their heads. Overall I found it enjoyable but a lot of work needs to be done on story telling if Adam were ever to publish again.

I hate to give this book a 1* (as I do genuinely enjoy Adam’s YouTube content) but Hiding Him is a big swing and a miss for me. The characters lack any real development and I found the characterisations of most to be stereotypical for a book of this nature. The ‘spicy’ parts were a particularly difficult read and I quickly found them to be clunky, awkward and repetitive. For example, in Adam’s typical ‘YouTube’ setting, the Frozen double entendre could easily be played off as more wink wink nudge nudge but as a reader I found it out of place and uncomfortable. Unfortunately, in this instance I don’t think that Adam’s infectious online charisma and humour translates well, with Hiding Him being very surface level on a lot of important aspects. I enjoyed the vlogs leading up to publication and it’s clear that Adam has put a lot of effort in to try and make this a success but I fear that it really is a matter of style over substance.

3.5⭐

This is a lovely young adult rom-com with teenage drama and friendships. There's always the bully, but this story is not heavily focused on it and mostly remains pretty light and upbeat. It's well written too, especially for a debut novel.

So, why do I give this charming novel a perfectly good 3.5 stars but not more? Because it is perfectly good but not much more — to my tastes at least. I bet tons of people will just enjoy this to pieces, but my weaknesses lie in fantasy and mystery, and it just takes a bit more to impress me with a contemporary dramedy.

Finn and I are each sat with our feet up on the sofa. A couple of times, our toes have accidentally touched. The first time was on purpose. The second and third times were also on purpose… But the fourth time was by accident. Unless he did it on purpose.

The novel is funny but not hilarious. The romantic relationship is very cute but not to die for. The book is a little bit British but not ridiculously British (which is how I prefer them). I definitely think 'Hiding Him' deserves its place in the current LGBTQ+ YA romance boom (there is one, right?) and there are some great moments, but overall it's still just 'nice' for me.

My thanks to NetGalley and the author for the ARC.

4.5 ⭐️ Just wow. For a debut fiction novel, this was fantastic. Whether you’re a member of the LGBTQ+ community or not, I think we can all collectively agree that there aren’t enough books being talked about that represent these communities. Not only does Hiding Him explore conversations around coming out and navigating emotions surrounding that, the way that this book was written felt so real and raw, and you could clearly tell that this was a passion project for Adam. It was executed perfectly! The characters, the emotion, the feels, the heartfelt conversations, everything just felt perfect. This one is for fans of Heartstopper and lovers of the found family and first time love tropes.

The perfect summer comfy romance that feels like a warm hug.

Cam and his friends are curious about the new guy in town, Finn. Finn is mysterious and yes, very attractive. Cam has a huge crush on him and their friendship starts to become something more.

This book had such a good group of friends that helped to portray how a great support when you are a teenager full of doubts, can make a big difference. My only criticism here is Geri keeping secrets from Robyn. I did not enjoy that part so much.

This is a wholesome coming out story and even though, yes there are many tropes used, this is the type of cute, fun and exciting love story that will make your heart melt. Definitely a perfect read for Heartstopper fans.

The characters had a lot of fun moments and experiences in many different settings but also had time to share real conversations about more serious topics and support each other during their darkest times. We love a supportive found family moment.

A really enjoyable and great YA debut romance.

eARC copy:

Adam Hattan’s debut novel, ‘Hiding Him’, has the cutest romance storyline between Finn and Cameron. You fall in love with Cameron as a character from the first chapter, and it’s lovely to see him find his way through sixth form. Although there are some bumpy rides between his friendship group and Finn, it’s enjoyable to see Cameron discover himself, make mistakes, and learn from them. Cameron is lovable because he’s kind and caring in all he does, and his love and care for Finn shine through in each chapter.

Without giving any spoilers away, all I’ll say is that the ride is the perfect location for what happens on it, and it had me smiling and laughing throughout the entire chapter.

Finn is such a lovable character, and it was nice to see how strong his relationship with his mum is. I felt a real connection to Finn’s character and backstory, and it’s nice to see it all come together for him.

I loved the pace of the book and really enjoyed reading a YA romance that not only had the right level of spice but was also set in the UK—a nice change from most that are set in America. For a debut novel, it was incredible. I hope this is the first of many YA romances from Hattan.

Though I’ve been a regular watcher of Adam’s for years, I’ve been a reader much longer, so when Adam announced his first young adult novel I was extremely excited! Hiding Him is genuinely a fantastic read all around for a number of reasons. Firstly, there is something particularly comforting about a classic British young-adult novel, with the cracking humour and odd nostalgia. This is something Adam Hattan’s debut novel, executes perfectly. From the universal experiences of a British sixth former, to the stereotypical characters found in practically every secondary school. Hiding Him’s achieves this level of comforting familiarity, without being predictable. This leads me onto to the brilliance of the characters in this book (special mention to Geri). The antagonist was notably annoying, and Cam’s awkwardness at times was highly relatable. The group’s dynamics really did imply a found family vibe, which I am always fond of. My only critique of this book is that I found the chapters a little long at times, there were definitely places a new chapter could have begun - though this does not takeaway from the writing at all. Though not something I would usually write about in a book review, my inner book nerd is so impressed at the quality of this self published book and the love that has been poured into it. This review cannot be concluded without acknowledging the importance of books like Hiding Him. It gives queer teenagers an outlet of support and representation as they face similar challenges in their coming of age. With its heartfelt conversations and scenes, Hiding Him is truly an excellent book.

Please keep in mind, I'm a 37-year-old straight woman who doesn't read a lot of YA contemporary these days. I did, however, really wanted to support Adam Hattan's debut!

This was a cute little coming-of-age, coming-out story. I think the characters could've used a little more depth and development. I don't feel like I really knew the two main characters or that they really knew each other. It felt a little instant-lovey, and I think more development would've helped with that.

Overall, a cute and fun read.

This was the sweetest little love story. Sometimes you need a palate cleanser of a book — one that you have a feeling will have a happily ever after, one that you can guiltlessly smile at and swoon over — and this is that book.

Hiding Him has a charm running through its veins that was akin to the vibes of Heartstopper, without being a carbon copy of it. In addition to its charm and romance, it had its own sense of humor that blended effortlessly into the writing. The tone was consistent, and it was able to maintain levity throughout while still being able to tackle some harder topics.

The relationship dynamic between Cam and Finn had my heart so full, and I loved watching their love blossom. The support that they offered one another was so heartwarming, and the way they protected one another was touching.

My few critiques … some of which are personal preference (some spoilers ahead)!

The side characters, at times, made me so frustrated. Geri essentially guilting Cam for not outing Finn to her, and thus “lying” to her? Nah. That makes you a bad friend, girly pop.

I think I am officially at my limit with the “the heterosexual villain is actually a closeted homosexual” trope. It’s played out, it’s overdone, and it sometimes feels lazy.

I wish there had been more attention on Cam confronting West at the end of the book. A great deal of the book’s conflict stemmed from him, and all we got was a paragraph acknowledging it.

Overall, Hiding Him is a wonderful story about discovering and accepting your identity — even in the face of hardship and bigotry. It’s about embracing the love and support around you, and learning firsthand how empowering that can be.

The strength of the story and Adam Hattan's writing style were more than enough to make me want to read future releases by him. This is a stellar debut novel.

Also, the Taylor Swift references were an enormous bonus!

Funny and Fabulous

Finn is the new boy at school, slightly older than Cam, who Cam sees in the distance whilst dog walking with his mum.

Then he is stunned to see him at school, a new student, who suddenly appears to be everywhere, and Cam is instantly smitten.

Cam has his own small group of friends, Geri who is determined to rule the Seaton Christmas Extravaganza with an iron first, and Robyn who has googly eyes for Noel.

Then there's West, the enemy; he's attractive, knows it and is an arrogant idiot. He takes pleasure in faux flirting with Cameron wo see how much he can embarrass him.

Avoiding West and his entourage has become second nature to Cam since Year 10.

As for the teachers, Miss Barkley and Mr Powell seem quite fun whilst Ms Haun is nicknamed the Demon Headmistress.

Between the school shenanigans, the friendships, the approach of Christmas and the big show, Cam can only think of Finn.

And could it be possible thar Finn is gay, bi or pan and might like him too?

Fans of the novel My Fair Brady by Brian D. Kennedy and the Heartstopper graphic novels and TV show will enjoy this I think.

It's heartwarming, painful, funny and fabulous.

Adam has created a beautiful story, perfect for fans of Heartstopper & Love Simon. If you enjoy a sweet, innocent, uplifting romance, this is the story for you. Utterly delightful and heartwarming.

There was a host of lovable characters throughout; Finn & Cameron are both adorable in equal message - Geri, our tough and loyal ally - Finn’s mum who is supportive and lush. Of course we have a villain to build the story arc, but the characters are well written and I fully invested in this great bunch of people.

At the forefront of this story is solidarity & strong friendships amungst the blossoming romance of these two sixthformers and their strong attraction. The story arc is so uplifting and pure pleasure. These teens and their feelings were so relatable and I had great nostalgia remembering the sleepovers, days out and first romances.

I really enjoy an easy paced YA gay love story between some of my more grittier reads; I think they appease the 15 year old in me who didn’t have them growing up. I think they do so much good for teenagers today and normalise sexuality at that curious and often lonely age. This one did not disappoint and it thoroughly warmed my heart.

Firstly, I wanted to say thank you to Adam Hattan for sending me a copy (in a really cool box) of Hiding Him. Very cool marketing strategy ;)

Hiding Him is a British queer YA debut novel about a very out and proud gay teen falling for a very closeted gay teen.
It was a good story I got through pretty quickly and that I definitely enjoyed. However, two days after finishing it I've already forgotten most of what happened... I don't think this is one that will stick with me, but I'm sure it probably will for many other people.

I talk about books here: Instagram / TikTok / Linktree

Definitely felt the angst and longing between Cam and Finn. Having watched Adam for years, I felt so proud reading this and really thinking.. you did this (and how fitting that the book ends with YOU’VE GOT THIS)! Such a light hearted, feel good book that felt REAL. The conversations and comments from every character felt like I was part of their real conversations, it felt comfortable. I would definitely categorize this as a young adult, and can’t wait to see what Adam comes up with next! Truly enjoyed this. Cam’s hate for mushrooms? Okay Adam!!

3.5 rounded down. I enjoyed this cosy read, and Adam made it so easy to get to know and feel for the characters in such a short amount of time. Only real downside is that it just felt a bit like a Heartstopper rip off and didn’t hit me in the feels as much! I did enjoy Adam’s style of writing though and will definitely read another one of his in the future.

5⭐️ Review - Hiding Him by Adam Hattan

Oh boy ✨💛 I have so many lovely things to say about this book that I don’t know where to begin! First off, the fact that I polished off all 260+ pages in a single sitting this evening tells you quite how much I adored it. I devoured this book! I’m a huge lover of romance fiction and it is continually such a joy to hear queer stories being told in such an authentic way.

First off, the relationship between Cam and Finn is just dreamy. Adam is SO talented in that their electric chemistry and intimacy is captured so much through the small moments; the looks, the smallest of touches. Their relationship builds in such a satisfying way and with moments that made me fill up with tears yet sit absolutely beaming with joy for Cam at the same time.

The FRIENDSHIPS in this book are also something to celebrate. My own friendships bring me such comfort and satisfaction and at no point in this book do those relationships appear secondary to romance. Robyn and Geri in particular bring such fierce loyalty and allyship, but the addition of Emily brought such a safe space for Cam that so many young people have needed for such a long time. Yes, every relationship is this book is tested but again this adds to the authenticity and emotional rollercoaster!

If you are after the sweetest of romances or a truly heartwarming read, Hiding Him needs to go straight to the top of your TBR List. The book is out on July 2 and is available for pre-order now! Check out @adamhattan for details!

I’ve been a huge fan of Adam and his Disney vlogs for years and when I saw he’d took the plunge and made another of his dreams come true I knew I had to get my hands on a copy as soon as possible!

This is such a heartwarming, emotional, sixth form throw back perfect read and with it being written by a fabulous member of the LGBTQ community we get a side of the struggles which sometimes aren’t portrayed very well. Part of me felt like Adam had poured himself into Cameron and Finn and some of the dialogue I heard in his voice which made it that bit more special. I absolutely adored their love story and seeing them overcome the bullies and the bullshit was beautiful to read. I loved Adams writing style and I know he’s going to be a firm favourite of mine again.

Finns dad needs a visit from Geri I think as well. She’ll sort him out. I loved the Moooooorrrning reference as well as we all know that’s Adams’s signature sign on in his vlogs. This was a wonderful read and one o devoured in 24 hours.

Thank you for sharing your story, your dream and a little part of you we don’t get to see much. Thank you for writing Cam, Finn, Geri and Robyn.

I've been following Adam for years, I think since 2015 or something and it was really cool to see how this book came to life. However, I don't think I was the right audience for this book. It read more like a book for young teenagers. And there was some disconnect with how the characters (aged 16/17) sometimes acted more like 12/13, in contrast to the quite jarring sexual thoughts running through their minds, which was a bit shocking and unexpected. Also who would even approve a magic mike show/strip tease for a school performance?

As a non-British reader it was also difficult to understand what grade they were in (idk what a sixth form is). And there was also a small type on page 234. I think writing for an older audience would strengthen Adam's writing a lot.

All in all, it was a quick fun read, but not quite my cup of tea, though I wish Adam the very best in his writing career and would try a new book from him again!

I had high hopes for this book as I Love Adam’s content. But i found this book underdeveloped. Alot of it was cringey in the writing. I felt like I didn’t get enough description on some of the parts to imagine what people looked like and what places looked like. I also didn’t really like how a lot of it reminded me of Adam himself. For me it was slow to read and I struggled to get through the book

I was intrigued to read this book as it was set in the UK and we don’t get many YA books set in the UK compared to those set in the US. It was nice having one of our own write about UK schools and from a first time author too. Now having read it I think your enjoyment will very much depend on how much you have already read in this genre and what you are expecting from this book. For me this was a light hearted, fluffy book which was quite inoffensive (and I don’t mean that in a “kiss of death” or patronising way) with some fairly sweet characters. The plot is what you would expect and the angst was fairly low compared to many YA books. It felt like the type of book you would sun yourself under when things feel a little grey in your world. And it was good to see another British male author writing in this genre, someone I hope we continue to hear from in the future.

One thing I liked about it was that it was a first person narrative and I do like a first person narrative, especially when the characters are witty and intelligent. My go to in this genre is always going to be “Maps” in the “Life According to Maps” trilogy by Nash Summers. He’s a hard act to follow but a wonderful example of how a book can be elevated into the stratosphere when you get that first person character narrative just right. Unfortunately Cam is not quite there for me and I struggled a little with his voice in the book and his voice as heard in the prose. Occasionally the two felt a little off to me. At times some of the scenes in the book felt like they were being written like cartoon sketches, with overly curated comedy scenes and somewhat 2 dimensional character skits.

The other thing I had trouble with was how the author switched from writing scenes in the minutest of detail to suddenly writing chunks of text in precis format, missing out huge sequences. It was as if the author just wanted to jump to another intimate scene between Cam and Finn and not flesh out a scene he had already set up for us. The Christmas market scene for example, cuts out a huge section of the gang having fun together, which would have been much more interesting to read. We moved from a detailed description of Cam looking for Finn at the start of the evening (including a detailed description of Finn’s clothes) to suddenly jumping to the end of the evening with Robyn throwing up. As a reader I wanted to know what they had got up to in between. The author told us they were meeting up at the Christmas market, he even mentioned we were going to meet Finn’s puppy that night too. Then he short changed us and we got virtually nothing of the market or the puppy… did Cam actually get to meet him other than seeing Finn’s uncle holding him? It would have been fun to read about some of that. There are some great characters in here, the scenes could write themselves. If Cam and Finn had a good time at the market I want you to show us it, not just tell us afterwards in conversation that they had a good time. It is these things that give substance to the world the author creates because we get to live those experiences with the characters too.

The same can be said following the “break up text” on 22nd December. We jump straight to the New Year party without any description of what Cam must have been going through over the Christmas period. These are important characters moments that shouldn’t be glossed over because the author wants to get to the next big showpiece scene. Sometimes those things work in films or on TV but with books being a more intimate format, you want to know what is going on in your character’s head.

The two main characters were fairly likeable guys. They maybe could have benefited from a few more character flaws which would have made them feel a little more real and easier to relate to. All that said, he has written some great side characters in Robyn and Geri, even the parents stand out on the page. In fact I would love to read a book with Geri as the main protagonist, I am sure it would be so much fun. For me though this was a sweet book, if a little on the dull side. With so many incredible YA books out there by the likes of Simon James Green, William Hussey and Julian Winters, this might struggle to find its audience. I hope not as the author shows promise particularly with a decent story editor behind him.

This truly was an utterly wholesome coming of age, coming out story. I’ve been a fan of Adam’s for a while now, and when I heard he’d written a book I was super excited to get my hands on it. After watching his videos about getting it from manuscript to finished product and seeing all the hard work he put in, having the book in my hands felt even more joyful.

If anybody is looking for a YA book that represents the UK high school/secondary school experience, this is it. There is an understated British wit that absolutely comes through, and I could just picture my school so vividly while reading. And not to mention the relationships between the characters - there is plenty of drama, difficult decisions, and over-the-top, end-of-the-world teenage catastrophe that we all experienced at that age. There was a lot of heart in this story, and you can tell Adam took great care in doing Cam and Finn’s (but especially Finn’s) story justice.

I absolutely adored all the Adam Hattan Easter eggs: the ‘moooorning!’; the theme park trip with the reference to Oblivion at Alton Towers; Center Parcs; and ‘cheddar gorgeous’, which I think may be a nod to the incredible sitcom that is Miranda. And for giving HSM2 the reverence it deserves: I bow down to you Sir.

I will add a caveat here - I want to be frank, as I could’ve given it at least four stars if it weren’t for some of the SPAG and formatting issues I ended up finding and making a note of. (Sidenote: please read Adam’s author’s note to himself - I feel like this is where his voice properly shines. There are parts of the novel where I think somehow Adam’s voice and style got lost)

I do think it could’ve done with an extra edit and proofread, and there are elements of the plot that I think could’ve been expanded upon to add to the readers’ enjoyment without detracting from the main plot line. Having said that, I think the narrative itself is still lovely. There isn’t a massive amount of tension and there aren’t really any plot twists, but as someone who suffers from anxiety, I do often enjoy some level of predictability - I felt like I could comfortably settle into the narrative and enjoy it knowing what the outcome would be for Cam and Finn.

This was the perfect balance of everything for a queer UK high school romance - cute, sweet, emotional and angsty!! I’ve been a fan of Adam for many years now and I knew I had to read his debut novel. I cannot believe this is a debut! The love, soul and emotion that had gone into writing this book is truly evident and that in turn makes me feel even deeper for the characters and the story. Well done Adam!!!! Even with that aside any book that mentions high school musical and taylor swift in the same sentence immediately has me SAT!

This book is extremely raw and realistic as well as heartwarming and comforting. It’s the perfect book to really sink into and just binge in a day or so (I know from experience lol). This is for my lovers of Heartstopper and my UK romance book lovers who are sick of every romance book being about American high schools.

I received an eARC of this book through NetGalley.

What a beautifully written book.

I can’t believe this is his debut novel, great storyline, characters who are recognisable as people you could either love or dislike and many funny parts that made me laugh out loud.

George, Cam’s brother came out with some corkers so be ready for them. I could definitely see the authors sense of humour in many parts of the book.

I especially liked the ‘Moooorning!’ from Cam’s mum while walking the dog, was lovely to see the authors well known catchphrase in for all us Disney vlog followers.

The scenes changed well from one part to the next, I really liked Cam and Finn’s characters. Their friends Geri and Robyn were fab too, always having their backs and watching after them. There was lots going on in the story but it didn’t feel that it was too much either.

If you’ve not read an MM (male and male) romance before or you’re a Young Adult (YA) reader, then this is a great introduction into these genre.

I look forward to my pre ordered signed hardback landing on my doorstep when it’s released on July the 2nd.
