Rate this book
When John Marlow is expelled from school he makes an attempt to play poker at his local pub, getting off to a winning start, but soon coming down to Earth with a bump after losing most of the rest of the games that he plays. After being thrown out of his house for lying to his parents, John moves into his best friend’s house and stays a while, falling madly in love with Chloe, his best friend’s sister.

One day, Carl and Harry from the poker group offer John a way to earn some cash, doing some jobs for him, starting with robbing a pawn shop for another man from poker, Terry. John enjoys doing the jobs and starts doing more and more for Carl and Harry. Soon, John has to kill to protect his fellow bandits. It's an event that breaks up the team, with seemingly irreconcilable differences.

Now, seven years have passed, John and Chloe have gotten married and had a child, leading them into severe financial problems. To make ends meets, John calls up his old pal, Carl, and decides to become a "sweeper", a job which consists of cleaning up murder scenes for people for a large fee. John is rolling in the cash, until Carl ends up on the wrong end of a murder. Now, John has to find his friend's killer the way only a sweeper knows how.
