Ashokamitran (born September 22, 1931) is an Indian writer regarded one of the most influential figures in post-independent Tamil literature. He began his literary career with the prize winning play "Anbin Parisu", followed by many short stories, novellas and novels. A distinguished essayist and critic, he is the editor of the literary journal "Kanaiyaazhi". He has written over 200 short stories, eight novels, some 15 novellas besides other prose writings. Most of his works have also been translated into English.

1931ம் ஆண்டு செப்டம்பர் 22ந் தேதி, ஆந்திர மாநிலத்தில் உள்ள சிகந்தராபாத்தில் பிறந்தவர். இயற்பெயர் ஜ. தியாகராஜன். தமது இருபத்தொன்றாவது வயதில் (தந்தையின் மறைவுக்குப் பின்) குடும்பத்தினருடன் சென்னைக்குக் குடியேறி, ஜெமினி ஸ்டுடியோவில் மக்கள் தொடர்புத் துறையில் பணியாற்றத் தொடங்கினார். அப்போது அகில இந்திய வானொலி நடத்திய ஒரு நாடகப் போட்டிக்காக "அன்பின் பரிசு" என்னும் நாடகத்தை எழுதினார். அதுவே அசோகமித்திரனின் முதல் படைப்பு. 1954ம் ஆண்டு வானொலியில் அந்நாடகம் ஒலிபரப்பானது.

அசோகமித்திரனின் முதல் சிறுகதை "நாடகத்தின் முடிவு". 1957ம் ஆண்டு கலைமகளில் இது பிரசுரமானது. கலைமகளில் அவரது இரண்டாவது சிறுகதை "விபத்து" பிரசுரமானதையடுத்து, மணிக்கொடி கி.ரா. மூலம் ந. பிச்சமூர்த்தியின் அறிமுகமும், அவர் மூலம் "எழுத்து" பத்திரிகைத் தொடர்பும் கிடைத்தது.

சுமார் நாற்பதாண்டு காலத்துக்கும் மேலாகத் தமிழின் மிக முக்கியமான புனைகதை எழுத்தாளர்களுள் ஒருவராக அறியப்படும் அசோகமித்திரன், அமெரிக்கா, சிங்கப்பூர், ஜெர்மனி, இலங்கை ஆகிய நாடுகளுக்கு அழைப்புகளின் பேரில் இலக்கியச் சுற்றுப்பயணம் மேற்கொண்டிருக்கிறார். அவரது பல படைப்புகள், பல இந்திய அயல் மொழிகளில் மொழியாக்கம் பெற்றிருக்கின்றன. அப்பாவின் சிநேகிதர்' என்கிற சிறுகதைத் தொகுப்புக்காக, அசோகமித்திரனுக்கு 1996ம் ஆண்டு சாகித்ய அகாதமி விருது வழங்கப்பட்டது.

வெவ்வேறு ஆசிரியர்களால் எழுதப்பட்டு எழுத்தாளர் அசோகமித்திரன் அவர்களால் தொகுக்கப்பட்ட பதினாறு சிறுகதைகள் இந்நூலில் இடம்பெற்றுள்ளன.மருமகள் வாக்கு,நகரம்,நாற்காலி,அன்னியர்கள்,பகல் உறவுகள் போன்ற பல கதைகள் என்னை மிகவும் கவர்ந்தன.எஸ்தர்,மிலேச்சன் ஆகிய கதைகளில் ஆசிரியர் மையப்படுத்தும் கருத்துக்கள் எனக்கு சற்றுக் குழப்பத்தை ஏற்படுத்தின.அம்பை,வண்ண நிலவனின் எழுத்துக்களை தொடர்ந்து வாசிப்பவர்களுக்கு இக் குழப்பங்கள் ஏதும் ஏற்படாதிருக்கக் கூடும்.

All short stories are good except Vannadasan's தனுமை

Excellent selection of stories. Out of the 16 in the book I can say that ten of them are master pieces by the respective authors. You had selections from Sujatha to Vannadasan to Ki Rajanarayanan. An eclectic list of Manikkodi and Kanaiyazhi authors.

Ashokamitran has done a tremendous job. The final story is on by him and it was an entirely satisfying story summarising the running around we do in real life.

I took a very long time to complete this book because I cannot read Tamil proficiently. I learnt to read Tamil by reading magazines and thina thanthi newspaper with a little help from my cousin. Also since my native language is Tamil I did not have problems picking it up. I read this book slowly to complete all the 160 pages in the book - I'm a huge fan of the writer ashokamitran and I have read some of his short stories earlier. This book is so good that even the foreword to the book has the classy ashokamitran touch. Out of all the 16 stories there a couple which I did not like but overall the book is a solid proof for the limitless potential and imagination of Tamil story writers. The focus of Tamil story writers is this unique connect they bring between the society, it's tenets and a universe of human emotions which get influenced by these societal norms and tenets. The story by Ambai, chudamani, and a story called nizhalgal are timeless classics. Surprisingly ashokamitran who is a huge fan of jeyakantan did not include any of his short stories in this collection. Regardless if there is a collection of all-time best short story collection in Tamil, then I am sure that a few of the stories shared in this book will be part of that collection - also I am glad that ashokamitran provides this assurance. Last but not the least the short story from ashokamitran which is the last story of the book is Midas touch to finish this classic. The British did plunder the rare jewels and gems from India but ostensibly the poor economic condition that they left us in brought these great thinkers like ashokamitran, Sujata and the writers who are a part of this book.
