Initiations and Interactions: Early Intervention Techniques for Children With Autism Spectrum Disorders

Rate this book
Research shows that an early start is the key to successful intervention for children with an autism spectrum disorder. Research also shows that for most early intervention programs to be effective, they must involve a child's primary caregivers, especially when it comes to communication. Without adding to parents' already busy schedules, Cardon, a speech language pathologist, discusses the importance of creating a communication environment in the home. Simple, everyday tools include deliberate use of books, toys, visual schedules, and labeling among others. Initiations and Early Intervention Techniques for Parents of Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders does not advocate that parents steer clear of therapists and specialists. Instead, it puts more control in the parents' hands.

In their ASD evaluation reports, Boston Children's Hospital recommends 4 books to parents. Of these books, this one is the shortest and simplest read. It could be read several times over several years as your child grows, and it would be a helpful read each time. I would recommend beginning this book by reading the "Final Thoughts" at the end of the book, first.
