Bitches on IVF: Two Sisters Take on Infertility

Rate this book
There it was—a super cute, fun, Facebook post from our friend Claire, announcing how “blessed” she was to be pregnant. We both wanted to vomit right on top of our phones. The two of us—sisters Lauren and Lacey—had been trying without success to get pregnant for years. We are neither haters nor jealous women who can’t handle other people’s success. We’ve had plenty of success of our own, and we are genuinely happy for other people when good things happen to them; we love to celebrate good fortune. But after so many disappointing years and failed attempts to get pregnant, it was hard to feel like cheering. And thus began our story of IVF (in vitro fertilization), hormones, miscarriage, periods missed, egg harvesting, a shared surrogate, miracles, and—wait for it, we did, for far too long—mother-fucking-hood.

When the Universe Has Other Plans for Your Uterus

• If you have friends who are trying really really hard to get pregnant, buy them this book.
• If you don’t like to laugh and cry at the same time, don’t read this book.
• If you don’t like swearing, don’t read this book.
• If you like happy endings, read this book.
• If you have dealt with any kind of infertility, this book is a MUST read. This book goes out to all the ladies whose lives are being ruled by Infertility. All those ladies who may have turned just a wee bit bitchy because their lives have been relegated to blood draws and more time with their feet up in stirrups than they ever thought possible. We wrote this book for you. We are two sisters who have gone through years of infertility and made it out on the other side. We are here to share our story, make you laugh and probably cry, but most importantly, make you feel like you are not alone. We both had the greatest struggles of our lives thrown at us - countless years of IVF, surrogacy, miscarriages, infant loss, and preemies - and we learned that when we shared our stories with other women going through this hell, we were able to lighten their load just a bit. We are two sisters who were Bitches on IVF and we are here to share our story, and hopefully make you realize that if you want a family, then that is what you will get. Because if there is a will, there is a way.

For anyone going through infertility, our book will make them feel less lonely, more optimistic and will provide a renewed hope that they, too, can succeed in building their family, one way or another. Our story is one of candid honesty, bringing our most despairing moments to light and sharing those moments with a vulnerability and humor that is often not found in the world of infertility.

The Aumiller sisters live within walking distance of each other outside of Baltimore, Maryland, and you will likely see eight wild kids running back and forth between homes. They were born and raised in “Smaltimore,” went on to the University of Virginia to play lacrosse, started careers in finance and then EVENTUALLY started families. They don’t fancy themselves as authors, barely writers, but they do know that if they can help one person get through the struggle of infertility with their book, then it was all worth it.

"Bitches on IVF" by sisters Lauren and Lacey Aumiller is a raw, hilarious, and heart-wrenching account of their arduous journey to motherhood. The subtitle, "When the Universe Has Other Plans for Your Uterus," perfectly encapsulates the rollercoaster ride of infertility they faced.

What sets this book apart is its unique approach, breaking down the IVF journey into manageable and relatable segments. From the moment you read about their visceral reaction to a friend’s pregnancy announcement on Facebook, you are pulled into their world. Their candid storytelling covers every emotion—from frustration and despair to the ultimate joy of becoming mothers.

This book is a lifeline for anyone grappling with infertility. It's filled with laughter, tears, and plenty of swearing, making it feel like a late-night chat with your closest friends. As a fellow bitch who did IVF, I found their honesty and humor to be incredibly validating and comforting. Lauren and Lacey don't shy away from the gritty details of IVF, hormone treatments, miscarriages, and surrogacy. Their honesty and humor make even the darkest moments feel a bit lighter.

Their journey is one of resilience and sisterhood. Their ability to find humor in the midst of pain is both refreshing and comforting. For those who have spent countless hours with their feet in stirrups and endured the emotional and physical toll of infertility, this book offers a much-needed sense of camaraderie and hope.

The Aumiller sisters' story is not just about their struggle; it's about finding a way through the seemingly insurmountable. They remind readers that despite the heartbreaks and setbacks, a happy ending is possible. Their book is a testament to the strength and determination of women fighting for their dreams of motherhood.

"Bitches on IVF" is more than a memoir; it's a beacon of hope. Whether you’re in the thick of infertility treatments, supporting someone who is, or simply looking for a compelling read, this book is an absolute must-have. The Aumiller sisters’ journey will make you laugh, cry, and most importantly, feel less alone.

This was such a remarkable story with a lot of hardship, loss and tragedy. But it was also very hopeful and honest about overcoming really hard things and finding a way through to better days. The bond between the two sisters was also very special and inspiring!

If you know someone going through infertility, or have been there yourself, Lacey and Lauren will inspire you, make you laugh and make you cry. But most of all they will give you the most beautiful gift of hope for motherhood.

I was not excited when our book club chose this book thinking at my age I was not really interested in IVF and infertility. Was I ever mistaken. This book thru the personal stories of two very determined sisters is about perseverance and a "can-do, never give up" attitude. They are funny and honest and their writing is in their own voices which I found refreshing.

I had no idea how difficult the experience of IVF and surrogacy is. With so many woman and men having to choose these alternatives to have a family I am much more sensitive to the challenges.

Whether you are going through IVF or know someone who is or if you just want to read a book filled with hope, humor, and miracles this is worth your time.

I finished the book in one day. So much of it resonated with me and it brought back so many different feelings. I highlighted so many parts in the book.

I had not thought about this in a very long time, but when I was going to Dr. Mottla, I would always have to walk past the gift shop in Anne Arundel Medical Center to get to his office from the parking garage and they always had the cutest outfits in the shop window by that brand mud pie. I always dreamed of having a child to put in those outfits and there was specifically a Thanksgiving outfit that had a turkey on it. That was almost 14 years ago and I can still remember it like it was yesterday.
