Assassin. Executioner. Butcher.

Call her what you will, but Orien’s life belongs to someone else. Someone who uses her as a tool, an asset to gain power and strength. Alister Altair, King of Univier, controls her every move.
The years of slaughtering for hire make her numb to herself and the beauty of the world around her – and within her – until her eyes land on a woman she has never seen before. A woman whose beauty sheds the scales from her eyes.

Prisoner. Captive. Hostage.

Slavery is Elisiah’s reality, her life spent inside the castle walls of Univier. Her wicked mother and a corrupt King watch every move she makes so that she fits exactly into their evil plan. She has never known a life of freedom, and she dreams of better days – until she decides to take her freedom into her own hands and make those dreams her new reality.
Elisiah makes one rash decision and ends up trading one captor for another. One she has only heard about in tales meant to bring horror and fear to those who heard them.
But is Orien really a captor? Is she really as terrifying as everyone has made her out to be all these years? They escape the evil man who holds them both for very different reasons, and as they journey, they discover what makes them unique also makes them the same.

Ruptured Light: A Destruction of Gods by K. R. Richard

Releases: May 24th, 2024

My Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ .5

I received this Advanced Reader Copy of Ruptured Light, and might I say- oh my gosh I can’t wait for it to be out for others to read! I really really enjoyed it!

I love the main characters, (especially Nox-), I love how the author words things, and I especially love their story telling! They captured me in basically right away with Oriens’ first appearance, all the way until I got to the last page! (Which- cliffhanger?!? 🙃)

Ignore the fact that it took way over a week to read this, between life and tandem reading two other books- it took a minute. But I highly recommend reading this book when it comes out! Thank you for letting me be a part of this ARC experience!

Received an advanced reader copy for my honest opinion and review.

No spoiler review

First off I had no idea what to expect I came across this book in a fb book baddies group. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

From the first chapter this book had me enthralled it is a completely fresh story that is a really fun read! The main characters are crazy, hilarious, devoted, cold blooded ladies and something else! 😉 I found myself laughing out loud several times and getting a little heated up over some of the sexy high tension scenes building between characters. KR Richard’s writing style feels comforting like hanging out with your best friends, you want to find out what’s going on in their lives and of course they keep you coming back! Fans of Romantasy this will become an easy favorite! This book was so hard to put down and I hated when it ended! Very much looking forward to the next book in this series!

I'm at a complete loss of words right now. This book is one of my absolute top favorite reads of all time. KR Richard, are you sure this is your debut?! 👀 Seriously, everything about this book is incredible.

The world building, the characters and their development, the plot, EVERY.SINGLE.THING!

Now, this baby is thickkk but there is never a part of this book that is filler either. Every single aspect is story telling and every single word is necessary. You are kept on the edge of your seat every single chapter, wanting to know more and more of what happens next.

The love that I have for Orien and Elisiah is skyrocketing! And girllll the tension between these two, I'm going to need some smexy time to unfold in book two or I might personally combust! 🤣

I am soooo incredibly proud of you KR Richard. You did it babe! 👏

"Ruptured Light: A Destruction of God" by K.R. Richard is a riveting tale that hooks you from the start and doesn’t let go. This book is an electrifying blend of action, deep emotions, and thought-provoking themes, and it deserves every one of its five stars.

Meet Orien, an assassin with a fearsome reputation and a haunting presence. Standing at around seven feet tall with short, fiery red curls, piercing brown/black eyes, a face marked by freckles, and a body laced with scars, she’s a striking figure (talk about a girl crush). Add to that a dark black muzzle with gold rivets, and you’ve got a character that leaps off the page. It was however extremely disheartening to know that the muzzle was forced on her at age 4. Controlled by the sinister King Alister Altair of Univier, Orien’s life is one of relentless killing, making her numb to the world and to herself—until everything changes when she locks eyes with Elisiah.

Enter Elisiah: prisoner, captive, hostage. Her life is a nightmare under the watchful eyes of her wicked mother and the vile King. Elisiah has never known freedom, but she's a dreamer with a fierce determination to change her fate. One daring move lands her in the clutches of Orien, a figure shrouded in terrifying legends. But is Orien the monster everyone says she is, or is there more to her than meets the eye?

Richard's narrative is both intricate and engaging, weaving themes of power, control, and liberation. The world-building is immersive, with Univier's oppressive atmosphere providing a stark backdrop to the protagonists' quest for freedom. The author's descriptive prowess brings the characters and their surroundings to life, making the reader feel deeply invested in their struggles and triumphs.

This book does end on an intense cliffhanger. I want to thank K.R. Richards for the opportunity to ARC read this wonderful book. I cannot wait to see what comes next.

This book was so fun and in my opinion different from other fantasy book I've read. Orien is such a compelling character and Elisiah balances her out so well with her temper and lack of filter. Don't even get me started on the "third" member of this duo, had me cackling maniacally at points. The lore in this book is deep and interesting. You'll be hooked just from the prologue, one of the best I've read, and it just gets better from there.

4.5 ⭐️

This book was absolutely phenomenal. I will be recommending it to a bunch of my book friends and even my non book friends. The main characters were very complementary of each other and they are a perfect fit. Then there’s the “third” member of their little trio, he has quite the humor bone in him. At one point while I was reading I was concerned that I would wake up my kids up because I was laughing so hard. Don’t even get me started on the ending because all i can say is “Ugh” and if you read it for yourself you will understand why I say ugh. Do not let my week long read deter you from reading it. I have toddlers that were extra needy these last few weeks.. but if it wasn’t for that I would have finished this book in one sitting because when I was reading it I didn’t want to put it down. I am excited to see what will come next for the trio and the world(s) they are living in. I am very excited to see if there will be a book two and I am equally excited to be able to read the second book!!!!!!!!

Ruptured Light
Book 1 in the A Destruction of Gods Series
★★★★☆
“Everything needs a protector.”

Tropes
• Sapphic Romance • Fated Mates • Touch Her and Die • Morally Grey FMC • Assassin x Captive • “Who did this to you”

Overall Thoughts
I was genuinely so intrigued by this book from the very beginning. I can honestly say I have never read another story quite like this before, and as my first sapphic fantasy romance, it completely exceeded my expectations.

The atmosphere of this book feels dark, raw, and haunting in the best possible way. K.R. Richard created a world that feels brutal and unforgiving while still weaving in moments of softness, vulnerability, and healing between the characters. The balance between violence and tenderness was done incredibly well.

One of the strongest parts of this story was easily the emotional depth of the characters. Orien and Elisiah are both deeply traumatized women who have spent their entire lives surviving under the control of others, and watching them slowly find comfort, safety, and understanding within each other felt incredibly rewarding.

The relationship development felt intense and emotional without losing the tension that keeps you completely invested. I loved that their connection was not just physical attraction — it felt soul-deep, almost instinctual, while still allowing room for fear, uncertainty, and emotional growth.

The fantasy elements were also fascinating. The lore surrounding the gods, shadow hounds, mates, World Walkers, and the constant themes of light and shadow made the story feel unique and layered. Every reveal felt like it added another piece to a much larger puzzle.

This book definitely leans darker emotionally, especially with the themes of abuse, manipulation, trauma, and control, but those darker moments make the emotional connections hit even harder.

Deep Dive Into The Characters
Orien/Nox
Orien was easily one of the most fascinating characters I have read in a long time.

She is feared by almost everyone around her and viewed as nothing more than a monster — a weapon created by King Altair through years of abuse and manipulation. Her entire identity has been shaped by violence, pain, and survival. She genuinely believes she is incapable of softness, incapable of love, and incapable of being anything other than the beast the world sees her as.

But underneath all of that rage and brutality is someone who has never once been shown kindness.
Watching Orien slowly unravel emotionally after meeting Elisiah was one of my favourite parts of the book. The shift from emotionally detached assassin to someone learning how to care, protect, and feel was written so beautifully.

Her internal conflict with the beast inside her was also incredibly compelling. The way the beast speaks, thinks, and reacts differently from Orien herself added so much depth to her character and made her feel constantly at war with herself.

I especially loved how protective she became of Elisiah almost immediately. Every moment where her anger surfaced because someone hurt Elisiah was SO good.
“Whatever she feels being around Elisiah is what she wants to feel every day until she stops breathing.”

Orien is terrifying, emotionally damaged, possessive, soft in ways she doesn’t understand yet, and honestly, one of the best morally grey FMCs I’ve read.

Elisiah
Elisiah surprised me so much throughout this story.

At first she seems softer and quieter compared to Orien, but as the story progresses, you realize just how strong she truly is. She has spent her entire life being controlled and abused, yet she still manages to hold onto compassion and hope.

I loved that even though she is scared, traumatized, and uncertain, she still challenges Orien constantly. She refuses to let Orien reduce herself to a monster and continuously pushes back against the idea that Orien is unworthy of love.

Their emotional dynamic worked so well because Elisiah sees humanity in Orien long before Orien can see it in herself.

One of my favourite things about Elisiah was how fiercely protective she became of Orien despite the fear everyone else had of her.
“That thing is my mate. Disrespecting her will be the last thing you will ever do.”

Fredrick
Fredrick was genuinely one of the sweetest parts of this entire story.
In a world filled with cruelty, manipulation, and violence, he felt like one of the only truly safe people. His care for both Orien and Elisiah added such an emotional warmth to the story, and every scene with him made me emotional.
“This man will not hurt his girls again.”

Favourite Quotes
“Everything needs a protector.”
“You do not get to tell me what burdens I choose to carry.”
“Whatever she feels being around Elisiah is what she wants to feel every day until she stops breathing.”
“We will gladly kill for you or die for you.”
“You cannot ruin me.”
“Light and shadow cannot live without each other.”
“Let the Gods find me… I will be their destruction.”

This book deserves every single one of the five stars I am giving it and it is one of the few books this year that got five stars because it is just that good.

This review is spoiler-free. I recommend this book to anyone, it's just that good.

I am at a loss for words to properly describe this book. It was magical and enrapturing, and the characters all interacted in such a way that you almost forgot it was a book you were reading. It is something completely different from what I am used to reading in the line of fantasy books, and it takes time to bring the reader fully into its immersive world.

Orien and Elisiah are the perfect complement and opposition to each other and each interaction keeps you coming back for more.

Orien is someone deemed to not be trifled with. Shrouded in mystery and part of stories told by villagers to imitate fear into people, she moves like a shadow. But there has to be more than that to her.

Elisiah is captive in her world, told what she can do and where she can go, like a prisoner with access to her library and the kitchen. She wants to be her person and live her own life, without another say in the matter. I believe that the strength and determination of this character encapsulated in the book is what makes her my favorite character.

One fateful day sends both of these characters on a collision course with only each other to trust. The world-building and storytelling in this book captured me, and I felt like I was right there with the characters, experiencing what they were experiencing. I also found myself both loving and hating (not hating) the cliffhanger, I feel like it makes me even more excited for what is to come next in the story!

I received this book as an ARC and am thankful for being allowed to be one of the first to read this.

Shadow Mistress? — yes please!

Shadows are everywhere right now, fantasy books focusing on shadow daddies like crazy. But not here. Here, we have an amazingly fresh take on shadow powers in a sapphic form that will leave you panting and wishing that the slow burn between Orien and Elisiah would just burst into flames and scorch us to put us out of our misery.

Orien is a trained Fae assassin of the King who is cursed with a magical muzzle that keeps her from speaking. Elisiah is the daughter of the King’s Seer and is supposed to become the King’s unwilling bedmate. Raised in the same castle, their paths have never crossed until a fateful day that tips over a single domino, starting a chain reaction that will change their lives forever.

I absolutely fell in love with Orien’s character. She’s tough and tortured. She gives off major shadow daddy vibes, so yes, I’m calling her our shadow mistress! Elisiah’s character had me annoyed at some parts, as I felt that she was immature or just plan dumb with some of her actions. But I guess we never know how we will act when a 7 foot tall assassin decides to protect us but doesn’t speak and changes eye color more often than clothes.

I loved this and will be on the look out for book two. If I had one suggestion for the author, it would be to put the pronunciation guide at the beginning of the book, not the end, so we know it’s there! But that doesn’t impact the rating in any way.

This book….This BOOOK!!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This book with have you captured just from the prologue. Then keep you wanting more and more and more! It was so hard to put this book down (I only did because I had to adult)

There’s plenty of word building and character building. Each of the characters have their own intense yet epic personalities and I LOVED getting to know each one.

Orien is our BA assassin. The dark shadow she carries about herself stems from being muzzled at age 4 by Alistar Altair the King of Univier. He used her as his killing machine that everyone fears.

Elisiah is our prisoner held captive by King Alistar and her mom. All she wants it to be free of the chains and to live her life. She has grown up inside the castle and is ready to break out.

When the two meet, they begin the journey of escaping a horrible King that has used each of them in his own dark way. During this journey each one discovers who the other is while finally discovering themselves.

Oh and don’t forget about that ending!!! Whyyyyyyyy would you do this to ussss!

I am OBSESSED with this book and I am IMPATIENTLY waiting for the next one!!!!

*Ahem*

“Do not run, Little One, we do really love a chase. Only against us, you will surely lose.”

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Well well well… hehehe this book right here was everything I was NOT expecting and it left me speechless. This was magical to read and honestly i took my time, there is a LOT of world building and I wanted to make sure I didn’t miss one bit of it!

Mrs. Richards I cannot believe this is your first baby book, like WTH 🫣 this was nothing more than extraordinary. The flow of this book is amazing, the description of everything and to think it is written on 3rd POV, no words.

I am going to be honest tho, it is a book that you will start reading and get bored because as I mentioned above, there is a LOT of world building but once you are passed that HOLY MOLLY woman!! I love ORIEN with a passion, she has gone through so much in ALL her life and still thrives as a bad@$$! I am completely IN LOVE with her, and OMG the tension between them had me going crazyyy, plz make sure there is extra on book 2 🤨🤪. And let’s not forget our spitfire Elisiah - this girl is only small and pretty but would F you up any moment! WATCH OUT!

Just read the book, runn and remember TAKE YOUR TIME, with books like this you need to pay close attention!

Let me just start off by saying, OMG. I’ve personally never read fantasy, I’m into dark romance, mystery/thrillers, and sometimes contemporary romance. When I tell you I LOVED every minute I spent reading this book.

The plot is amazing, the slow burn building up to events is just uhhhh. WORTH THE WAIT 💯. I was so mad at some points in the books because ummm excuse me, how you gonna do my girls like that? No maam, no sir. 😤✋🏽

The book makes you want to continue reading, and you get instantly invested on what’s going to happen from the VERY FIRST CHAPTER.

It enjoyable, steamy, and funny. I literally LOL’d so many times. K.R’s reading style is so easy to follow along. It doesn’t seem like you’re reading a book to yourself. Feels like she’s telling it to you and I love it.

The characters personalities are really shown. Like you would think they’re real people. You can just understand them. Can you make book characters your friends? Bc I could definitely be these girls friend 😌

The only bummer is this book ends on a major cliff hanger and I was sooooo mad and in shock 😂😂 like how could K.R do that to us lmao. I will definitely be impatiently waiting for the next book in trilogy!!

Holy crap!!! This book grabbed a hold of me so quick! I was a little nervous reading the prologue because I was a little overwhelmed with the history. I hate that it took me so long to read this book but I am so glad I did! Orien was a feared only because no one understood what or who she was. Then Elisiah who is promised to the King shows up and changes it all. I love the relationship between Elisiah and Orien. Elisiah has physical and emotional wounds from her hard life and is scared of all feeling and Orien doesn’t know how to feel. They help each other get through and I love it so much. I would have to say the sassy banter between Elisiah and Nox had to be my absolute favorite though. I love Nox so much. This whole journey kept you attached to all these character and invested for what was going to happen to them. This is was definitely a job well done especially for a debut novel. Awesome job. That ending though I mean come on I thought I was missing pages. I can’t wait to read what comes next. So many unanswered questions. You have me invested so here I impatiently wait for book 2. Well done!!! I was absorbed and your story still lives in my head along with all the characters I want to know what’s next.

K. R Richard thank you for the arc of your new series
A Destruction of Gods. You're a new author for me and I didn't know what to expect. You took me a fantastic trip, with great main characters and set the temp of the series with Mystery, and draws one in from the first chapter that makes me need to read more. It's an easy read, with small pieces of humor that makes ppl around me look like omw has she lost her mind. But hey that's the world of fantasy one never knows where it takes you. Im looking forward to reading book 2 to see how story evolves. I really recommend this series.

That cliffhanger really!!

This was a fantastic read, I truly got lost in the world that the author built.
The world building and character depth were phenomenal. It was intense, nail-biting, but I found myself wanting more and more.

This was a riveting tale that captivates you right from the start.
Orien, a killer assassin, has been through some horrifying ordeals by King Alister. My heart bled for her. Her backstory was gribbing, I was sobbing like a baby.
And then we have Elisiah, held captive under rule by her evil mother, she dreams of freedom.
Both are linked by fate. Both have more to them than anyone knows.

This book was thick, yet I still found myself wondering where the rest was, flicking through the back pages like a mad women.

I seriously can't wait for book 2, I need more.

I thoroughly enjoyed this story. the character's kind of reminded my of my own characters. The character, Orien, was my favorite. She is a deeply tragic character and it tugged at my heart strings. When it comes to the story, I still don't really know what's going on, but maybe that's because the MCs don't know what's going on which is fair. I'm interested in seeing where the story goes in the next book.

Loved this soooo much

The world-building is so detailed it actually pulls you in, and once the story gets going it’s hard to put down. Orien is everything I want in a morally grey character, and Elisiah’s journey kept me fully invested the whole time. Their dynamic had me hooked so much tension and emotion.

And that ending?? Painful but in the best way because now I need the next book immediately.

Definitely recommend if you like dark fantasy with strong characters and a bit of angst.

This was a wonderfully written fantasy. Definitely a new take on an old concept. It was refreshing to see something so unique. The banter between Orien and Elisiah is probably my favorite part of the entire novel. There's plenty of characters but not too many that it's difficult to follow. It was a very enjoyable read and I'll definitely read more of this author's work as it becomes available.
