Pete Ashton is an undercover detective - tasked with smashing open the most dangerous drugs gangs blighting Britain's streets. He targets hardened criminals - men at the top of their game, who have everything to lose, and who would not hesitate to put a bullet in his head if his cover is blown. Crack gangs, heroin dealers, speed freaks - he's infiltrated them all, and put many of them behind bars. This is the story of a life lived in the shadows - always looking over your shoulder, pushing yourself and your cover story to its limits - and the toll it takes.
Scary, funny and downright awesome insight to a very brave team of professionals, think only this of these teams..... would you be able to do this job???
Great book for anyone interested in this subject. Easy to read and finished this book in 2 days . Very brave, courageous guy who sacrificed everything for the job.
While working on a recent novel, I picked this up on the Kindle for the purpose of research. As I was reading, I found that being undercover is a nasty prospect. I also discovered that certain parts of Britain are disease ridden hell holes...something I was aware of anyway.
Pete Ashton (or whoever he is) crafts a book that borders on repetitive, but it only emphasises the boredom, monotony and repetition of the job itself. He goes out, deals, comes back, records it. Rinse and repeat. At times, the author wants to quit it all and spend some quality time with his family but dedication to the job and pride always keep him going back for one more deal.
This book is efficient, detailed, honest and, at times, scary. Many times does our author risk his life and livelihood to expose the criminals of Britain, all in the course of justice. If only his superiors felt the respect that we do as readers.
The problem is, the book IS repetitive. After the third or fourth deal, they all go down the same. Every now and then a snag comes along and puts Pete in danger but he gets out of it. However, this wasn't the gripe for me. The gripe was reading about areas in Britain (Derby, Nottingham, London) that are so downtrodden, riddled with drugs and low life that it makes you fear for your safety. Several named areas I have been to before and it's a shame that this sort of thing is allowed to happen, even with the Police aware of it. It's more of a statement on our Government then the author but it leaves a nasty taste in your mouth nonetheless.
For research purposes, this book was perfect. I now have a knowledge of the undercover drug scene. As a story, it works well from an autobiographical point of view. As a fun book though...you'll struggle to finish it. Read it if this is your sort of thing...if not, avoid.
