Akosiibarra’s Everyone Is Suspect is a bold attempt at tackling taboo topics through the lens of mystery, and for that alone, it deserves attention. The premise, rooted in moral gray areas and social discomfort, is introspectively intriguing. It’s the kind of story that makes you stop and think, not just about who did it, but why the story was told in the first place.

At some point in the plot, the mystery becomes a bit of a dead giveaway. The twists aren’t entirely unpredictable, and it does fall into familiar tropes. But Akosiibarra does something else that I think many Wattpad writers are still learning to lean into weaponizing themes. The predatory undertones of the story were not just part of the plot, but used to reveal, challenge, and provoke character behavior. That intentional tension worked. It wasn’t just thrown in for shock, it had a purpose.

That said, the execution needed more polish. The characters, while cohesive as a group, often fell flat in delivery. Some of the dialogue bordered on forced or awkward, almost like the characters were trying too hard to sound like what they thought “main characters” should sound like. While that can be invigorating to dissect and develop, it made emotional immersion harder.

The story packs a punch thematically, no doubt. But it lacked the kind of sharp mystery and smart tension that could’ve pushed it to a higher rating. I couldn't help but compare it to Project: Loki, it has similar vibes but doesn’t quite land the same level of depth. The stakes aren’t as high or as clever as they’re set up to be.

As a traditionally published novel, Everyone Is Suspect deserved better proofreading and polish. The grammatical errors and printing mistakes were frequent enough to be distracting, and that’s a disservice to both the author and the readers. A cleaner copy would’ve elevated the entire reading experience. Still, this is a good step forward for Filipino-authored thrillers. It has more weight than some murder-mystery books I’ve read on Wattpad, and I applaud Akosiibarra for diving headfirst into such a sensitive topic. With better pacing, tighter dialogue, and more refined execution, I can see future works from this author making a much stronger impact.

[Some slight spoilers below but I'd try to be vague at almost everything except for the final part of this post.]

Four suspects and a detective - that's how many POVs this book switches through in the entire book, each one getting an entire chapter for themselves everytime it was their turn. It was also first person narration so we read every thought in their head. This is part of how I easily figured out the mystery.

The first couple of chapters were dedicated to reading the POV of the suspects about the night of the crime. Since it's first person, even some of their own secrets are told to the audience BUT it's explained that those same secrets weren't told to the detective despite the reason each character were reminiscing of that time was cause they were being questioned at the police station. Not all secrets were revealed yet but they had enough for anyone reading to figure out exactly how the murder had been done and what the motive is. Also, I also used to watch Detective Conan... I know about the ice lol.

With the mystery mostly solved by the reader, the rest of the story's hook were the characters. The detectives didn't know what the readers knew so we still have to know how they figure things out. The suspects also have their own personal drama connected to the death that we're also going to see have their conclusion. I think it was great as the rest of the book was still interesting despite the main point of the story (which is the mystery) not being a big thing to deal with while reading. Sure there's still a bit of a twist with the mystery but that felt like a bonus of sorts.

Each character was flawed as they were likable. I cared about them when I read their POVs but when they're being seen from someone else's perspective, I kinda don't like them lol. It's pretty good as you can tell the characters are different from one another and each really are main characters in their own right - none of them felt like an extra in a book about them.

On the other hand, Detective Juste obviously isn't a student from the school all the suspects + victim attends so he doesn't really have anyone to connect with so another detective, Verity, was introduced. If anyone here felt like a supporting characters, it's Verity who is added to the cast a bit later. She's there so that our main detective can have someone to banter with, discuss the investigation with and so on. They have a fun dynamic though and they're kinda "good cop, bad cop" when it came to interrogations. Verity also provides some information about Juste to show off more of his character.

If there's any issue I had with the book, it was the mystery solving itself. Not gonna lie, I was disappointed at how easy it was cause the main reason I got this book is that I want to try and solve the mystery in it. Most of it was solvable just by reading suspect testimonies. The next fun part would be reading the detectives figure things out themselves but that felt underwhelming in a way, I guess? There's not much investigation of evidences and there's a lot more interrogation happening whenever they do find something. Some of the evidence they needed (like every recording) were too easy to get or was provided by the suspects themselves who had to do their own investigating. Some of those evidence also happen to be stuff that the characters just remembered they had so they're just there for the end solution to a conflict and not to add on to the mystery.

Here's something I'm slightly annoyed about and it's the characters on the mystery solving. I'm not familiar with police protocol so I'm not sure about this but some of the things the detective did when gathering evidence (especially when it came to those interrogations) are things that felt off. Like, in real life those would not be how they'd be handled. But the author already had an excuse for it: Detective Juste isn't like other detectives and it is his thing to do questionable things for the sake of solving a crime. Verity even mentions how Juste had already gotten in trouble for his actions in a different case (and it's why she was assigned as his partner to make sure he doesn't go too far anymore). Like, I guess I can't be mad at what I feel might be inaccuracy when it's in character for it to happen?

Some characters' actions also didn't make sense at times. The most memorable one as I have just finished reading, is Beatrice's decision at the end. She helped get the last evidence to help save another character for being incriminated despite them having an argument that even led to blackmail in a previous chapter. It's just so weird. You'd expect a bit more drama in it but there's none for some reason?

And of course, the twist in the mystery I didn't see coming: the involvement of one of the suspects in the crime. They're all innocent when it came to the murder except one of them may have unknowingly helped for it to happen. Desmond is the one holding some of the book's twist near the end which makes sense as he's the victim's assistant when it came to school as Desmond is a student aide stationed in the Guidance Council Office where the late teacher worked. He had some information that was needed for another issue that comes up later. That said, getting back to the main mystery, this is where I'm kind of annoyed at this story.

Desmond also gets his own POV chapters but somehow, his little involvement in the main crime wasn't mentioned at all. It was understandable at the beginning as he didn't want to testify without a lawyer so his own POV in the crime of the night wasn't as detailed as everyone else's but the entire duration of the book? Like, that was a big thing but you're telling me he never even thought about that detail the entire time that the readers wasn't aware of it until the reveal at the end? There were hints to this twist, of course, but still, not coming up during POV is weird.

I think the mystery part of this book would've been more effective had there been a narrator who isn't a character in the story. Someone who could tell us what's happening but not revealing everything that isn't currently going on. Having the character's be their own narrators easily gave us some backstory lore that helped easily solve things when those things could've been revealed piece by piece later by the detectives' actual investiagtion on their own chapters. The mystery and investigation were the weakest part of this book to me. It just had enough drama to get me invested as I love drama that isn't too stupid.

Anyways, it was a fun book. The characters themselves carried the thing as they made me want to know what would happen to them next. Overall, despite the things I didn't like, it was enjoyable.

This book reminds me of “One of us is Lying” by Karen McManus. Ang daming similarities but in a different font.

The story is about four students named Cole, Anastacia, Beatrice, Desmond who attended a despidida party for their guidance Councilor Zac which eventually became a crime scene kase Zac was killed through cyanide poisoning.

And now Detective Juste and Detective Verity starts to investigate the case of who dunnit.

Not a spoiler alert, but I really loved it how that Zac was killed, very satisfying kase alam mo na e sa umpisa palang ang manipulative nya and he literally breaks the law. And I have issues din sa mga name ng book na to, for example Juste Justanino, Verity Victorina, Anastacia Aragon.. basta yun. Ang weird.

Medyo predictable ang plot twist considering ang dami ko ng nabasang thriller and nababawan ako sa motive. Pero this is an OK book pampalipas oras ganon.

Plus I also admire the writing style of author kase nabasa ko na yung ibang books nya years years ago and I really really enjoyed it. He was able to give each character in this book a distinct personality, kaya wow din. So please keep producing stories. Thank you!

The mystery was both intriguing and enjoyable. I often found myself switching my prime suspect as new clues and developments unfolded. It was evident that the author dedicated significant time and effort to make the story engaging and well-crafted, which I deeply appreciate.

The use of multiple POVs worked effectively, especially with the inclusion of the detective's perspective. The storytelling was smooth and unpretentious, and the blend of Tagalog and English felt natural and seamless. One of my favorite aspects was the banter between Detective Juste and Detective Verity. Their dialogue felt authentic, and the characters’ voices were distinct. The distinction between the younger characters and the adults was also captured beautifully.

But I did have a few issues. Some lines lacked dialogue tags, which made it difficult to follow who was speaking at times. Additionally, a few dialogues sounded unnatural, such as, “Let us all offer a minute of silence and pray for the eternal repose of his soul,” and, “What’s going on, Cortez? Hindi ka ganito ka-sloppy maglaro kahit sa practice games.” The use of repose and sloppy made it awkward in my ear.

Since the story was told from multiple perspectives, replaying scenes was inevitable. While I understand the purpose, many of these replays didn’t offer new angles or insights, making them feel redundant. I believe those parts could have been trimmed to maintain the story’s momentum.

As for the reveal, while it was plausible, it didn’t feel as explosive or shocking as I had hoped. The epilogue, too, leaned a little into cheesiness. But I did enjoy the story overall. I just wish it had taken a few more risks to deliver a truly jaw-dropping conclusion.

3.5/5

The premise immediately made me think of another popular murder-mystery story that consists of 5 people; 1 killed, 4 persons of interests. Having known of the other story, I was already able to guess what will happen in the end,

The dialogues of some characters feel slightly cringy or forced. I feel as if most of the characters have the same/similar voice, which made me realize that most of the author's characters (in other stories as well) just speak that way.

The revelation and the investigation process weren't as juicy as I expected it will be. But overall, it is an okay read.

This book had me hooked with its suspenseful atmosphere and fast-paced storytelling. Even though the plot twists were a bit predictable, I still found myself enjoying the build-up and tension. The mystery element was gripping enough to keep me flipping pages. However, I’m personally not a fan of the student/professor trope, which made it a little harder for me to connect with the story or the characters involved in that dynamic.

It just didn't sit right with me, and that definitely affected my overall experience. Also, the ending left me confused—without spoiling anything, I just couldn’t wrap my head around how one of the key persons of interest seemed to face no consequences. It felt unresolved and left me with more questions than answers. Still, it's a solid read if you're into thrillers and don’t mind familiar plot devices. I’d recommend it to anyone looking for a light suspense read with a hint of drama.

dnf@82. the writing is clean and good, but the pacing felt slow for a mystery novel. while the author effectively builds suspicion around each character, i struggled to connect with the story because i didn't care about the victim whose death was being investigated. there wasn't a palpable sense of threat or urgency, which made it hard for me to stay invested in the mystery.

this book reminded me of 'One of Us Is Lying,' a novel i read some time ago. in that story, i was genuinely curious to find out who was responsible because the victim's death had a profound impact on the other characters. in contrast, this book felt more like solving a murder mystery puzzle from a magazine or a mobile game—interesting, but lacking emotional connection.

that said, the author did a commendable job of giving each character a distinct personality.

I love how it was written, the povs of each characters and how they narrate their testimonies which contributes to the investivation. Although some plots are predictable, there are still twists that I wasn't really expecting. I would say that this book was meant to show the cleverness of the suspects which are basically a students. I was a little bit disappointed with the detective because it seems that the students made all the work which made them outsmart that officers/detectives. Well, I think the book meant to be that way. Overall, I love how it was written, the narratives of each characters. Some plots are predictable wherein I already solved that case and came up with my own verdict midway. But some plots made me shook in a way that I wasn't expecting.

I'm not good at writing reviews but this is my review in EIS.

Maganda yung pagkakasulat ng mismong book, worth the money. Mostly sa mga scenes is predictable na rin pero may mga nakakagulat din na parts pero mostly predictable siya (for me). Overall, maganda naman. This actually made a reader of his. If you like mystery and thriller, I'd recommend this book.

No hate, but the entire book is so cliché, I don’t know but the plot twist are predictable and in every pov you’ll know what will happen next. Also I don’t know what up with the names, it’s all weird that the name starts with the same letter with the surname, it’s a little bit odd!

This one is sooo predictable. It feels like a breather for Akosiibarra—a break from the intensity of the other stories, or maybe even an experimental piece, I guess?
