I have to admit that I have just scammed through most of this guide. I really wanted a guide to Krakow, which is my planned destination, but this DK Eyewitness to Poland was the only thing they had in my local library.
Every DK travel guide that I have previously read has been a four star rating and although a high percentage of the contents of this book has been surplus to my requirements, it is clearly apparent that the contents are of the usual high standard.
What is clear is Poland is a far out country. One that is not fully appreciated by Western Europeans. The country has beautiful cities, towns and a varied countryside, a Baltic coast, mountains to ski, lakes and rich forest areas. Unfortunately I'm only visiting for a few days, but Poland would be great to tour around in the summer months.
Anyway I've read through the portrait and history sections and certainly the section on Krakow, as well as the usual practical info that is valuable for any visitor.

Seemed to give details on the tourist highlights and every area of Poland. Good for me doing background work on the areas I'm going and the culture I will meet when I get there. However, after awhile it all seemed to run together, and nothing stood out to me. It was mostly "dated from this period long ago, almost completely destroyed during WW2, rebuilt around this timeframe..." I understand this is a large part of the history of the area, but I don't see why you can't put that in the introduction and don't mention it again unless it's super important, please.

Not as dense as many other travel books, Eyewitness gives a lovely presentation of the information with plenty of pictures and maps.

Don't get me wrong--I love reading, but sometimes you just need to see a picture along side the text to decide if that site is making it onto your itinerary.

The included walks are nice and manageable.

Decent travel guide. I am not the biggest fan of travel guides as I feel you can get a lot more information and up to date advice online. I only read travel books if I borrow them from the library.
