When Roan Echarn, a young man with a terrible secret, accidentally steps off the train in Devaen, he is forced to put himself in the reluctant employ of Ishaan Darvis, a wealthy recluse whose tragic past is anything but secret. Can an incubus and a sexsomniac build a relationship based on sex, secrets, and lies?
I learned at a young age that books were precious and that the written word was a powerful means of communication. Since I have social anxiety and find it hard to speak to people, writing has become my voice. I’m able to say what I really think and feel without the irrational worry that comes with speaking.
I grew up and still live in Oregon, in the beautiful Willamette Valley. I’m within walking distance of the Willamette River, and a couple hours’ drive from both the coast and the mountains. Since writing doesn’t pay the bills yet, I also work for the school district, as an educational assistant at the same elementary school that I attended.
I love camping, hiking, bird watching, and rock-hounding and spend my free time writing, reading, or watching TV, movies, and sporting events. I’m a huge football, bullriding, and NASCAR fan.
I’ve been writing stories since I was ten and in all these years, the one constant in my writing has always been the magic, the supernatural, the inexplicable. Nothing inspires me like fantasy, be it dragons or vampires, faeries or demons.
I’m fascinated by human interaction, probably because I’m so bad at it, and few things in life bring out the raw intensity of human emotion like love and sex. Even when writing about faeries or demons or fantasy cultures, the needs are universal. Love is love, no matter what planet you’re on. Love is not the domain of the rich, or the powerful, or the beautiful. It belongs to everyone and that’s why I enjoy writing erotica. The fact that guy-on-guy action is really hot doesn’t hurt, either.
Wow, that was a satisfying read! The story is loaded with non-con all the way through - there really should be a publisher's advisory - but also manages to be super-angsty and emotional. It's a long book - 643 pages in the PDF version and around 303 in the epub (warning: last 20 pages are ads/excerpts for other books) - but it has enough narrative drive that I read it straight through.
Other men are sleep-walkers, Ishaan is a sleep-rapist. His nighttime security measures have failed enough that he's already raped a slew of unhappy local villagers by the time Roan comes upon him. Roan, an incubus who feeds on sex, comes to town, finds out what Ishaan is and thinks, mmm, buffet. He takes a job locking Ishaan in each night and letting him out in the morning, though of course we know he's not really going to leave the poor sleep-rapist raving alone in his room all night!
Ishaan has no memory when he wakes of what happened while he was asleep, so you have the various non-con shenanigans going on at night, while the MCs' prickly daytime relationship slowly evolves. That's basically it, the bulk of the book. There are various side-plots of the resentful villagers hostile to Ishaan, mad scientists after Roan, and Roan's incubus brother, but other than pushing the story along, they don't matter too much.
The plotting is maybe a bit too serendipitous, the world-building a little light, but I didn't really care about any of that. This was just the story I wanted when I bought this book and it delivered as promised.
This review was originally written for The Romance Reviews and can also be found there.
Although an incubus and a sexomniac might seem like a perfect match, when you add strong characters, stubbornness and buckets of self-loathing, it just might take them five hundred pages to end up together of their own conscious will.
For me this book was one of those intended to broaden my horizons and push at my limits. Not because I expected something violent to happen in it, but rather because I've never quite been able to come to grips with an incubus being worth my attention. Yes, I know that sounds rather harsh, but dependence on sexual energy or sex (varies according to the author) isn't a real power but more of an annoying inconvenience, or so I think.
That said, Roan was not a conventional incubus, not one I've previously read about anyway. He's frightened, self-hating and surprisingly vulnerable. Instead of seducing where he pleases or making his life something of a pleasurable affair, he keeps hiding and living off scraps for the bigger part of his life. When he stumbles into the small town and finds out there is a man with a convenient disease living close by, he jumps at the chance, because no matter how much he hates what he is, he's not ready to die.
There is no one among the planets who hates their life as much as Ishaan does, or so he thinks. He can't imagine a worse faith than falling asleep each night and not knowing if he would wake up the next morning with having raped someone mercilessly. Probably the worst thing of all is the fact that he doesn't remember the event once he wakes up, and without a willing keeper to lock him up in his room every night and release him come morning, he spends his nights in a jail cell keeping the town, which hates him, awake with his frustrated unconscious screams.
Roan does use Ishaan in this story. He feeds off him from the very start and for months after it, a fact Ishaan is not aware of almost to the very end of the story. Maybe it is just me, but I never really judged Roan for his acts. I saw Ishaan as two separate people, the zombie-like creature he appeared as during the nights when all he craved was sex, and the distant self-controlling man he looked like during hours he was awake. Despite not knowing what he was doing, Ishaan cared for Roan when asleep. He recognized him by name, listened to him and showed surprising affection. For that reason, I couldn't see Roan as using the unwilling, because he was helping the one person who was constantly ignored and to a point abused.
I also understood Ishaan's point of view where he actually saw everything happening to him while he was asleep as a form of abuse. He didn't remember it and he obviously felt violated. So to make this short, you could take this story in a couple of ways and that will probably be the deciding factor on how much a reader likes it.
The reason why I took away a star from this rating was the very length of the story. My copy had over 600 pages, and while the font was large and the sentences rather spread out on the page, I would say it did have at least half of that in a normal PDF format. During that much text, nothing happened but the slow development of their relationship from acquaintances to lovers, and the secrets came out at the very end. The world wasn't described much and while I was satisfied with the world explanations, which were just enough that was needed to make the story work, I also wanted to know more and see more of it explored.
So with one Locke book behind me I am more than willing to face more, incubus or sexomniacs, this author has gained my trust. Take a plunge and see if there is an adventure hiding among her words for you as well.
Solid characters tend to make a story and it was no different in this book. Their insecurities and vulnerable personalities made me stick to it and anticipate the resolution toward their happy ending. They were funny in certain situations but more often than not, they won me over with the heavy emotional undertones and the all but screaming need for love.
A retelling of the Beauty and the Beast with the original catch that here both heroes, Roan and Ishaan, are at the same time Beauty and Beast. Plus there is the universe, as complex as a melting pot of genres.
Roan is a incubus that is stranded in a small town without a whorehouse, the usual place where Roan can satisfy his thirst in the guise of being a male prostitute; at the local inn he finds an unexpected answer to his problem, they are searching for a “babysitter” for the local villain, Ishaan. Ishaan is the son of a very wealthy man, but all the money of his father cannot cure him from his illness: by night Ishaan turns into a raper; it’s like sleepwalking, only that Ishaan rapes people to satisfy is sexual animalistic instinct. He is not aware of what he is doing, and as soon as he awakes, even if he doesn’t remember anything, he hates himself for his doings. So Ishaan wants someone living with him to lock him into his room every night, not letting him out for any reason.
To Roan that is the answer: he will have sex with Ishann by night, while the man is not “conscious”, and then will play the role of the humble servant by day. The plan is perfect if not for the little detail that Roan falls in love for Ishaan and the feeling is mutual. How can he now admit to Ishaan that he was using him for months?
Both Roan than Ishaan are really young, and in a way, naïve. Sex for them is almost a trouble more than a pleasure, and so their relationship is built more on the mutual interest, that, being they so young, are really “innocent”: cooking, gardening, hunting and fishing… their love is more similar to that of teenage boys than that of young men. Maybe since not Roan or Ishaan had the chance to live their teenage years, they are not make up for the lost time.
As I said the setting is another important element; this is a futuristic world, a planet in another galaxy, after what you can probably call an “energetic” apocalypse. Common energy is not more available to the average people, only the very rich can afford it; computers, televisions, cars are still existing, but they are luxury items. Most people reverted back to the use of horses and coal, and they are now living in small town, sharing the space with paranormal creatures: the sheriffs and other police officers are shapeshifter dragons, mages living among humans are ordinary events, and so on. There was a little bit of steampunk feeling, maybe for the train arriving and living the city being the only connection with the outside world. In any case, the mix was good and nothing was “clashing”.
This is a kind of re-telling of 'beauty and the beast'. Ishaan is the 'beast' who must be locked in his room at night to prevent him raping people in his sleep. Roan is the beautiful young man and secret Incubus hired to lock Ishaan's door at night. Plenty of mostly sweet fuzzy non-con..
'Roan closed his eyes and pressed his lips to Ishaan's. Ishaan didn't respond, his mouth tight and hard, and a deep, immeasurable ache tore the soul out of Roan's chest as he realized that he'd just made the biggest mistake of his life. A sob rose in his throat, hot and choking, but before he could pull away, scramble to his feet and run, Ishaan made the tiniest sound, barely more than a whimper, and clutched him, his lips softening, parting.'
I don't usually pick up a fantasy m/m book, but the ideas behind this one just under-towed me!
This story has some of the strangest non-con scenes I have ever read... and yet, the entire story--despite its fantasy elements--is completely believable and absolutely compelling.
I will not forget this clever and intriguing story any time soon! It truly came to life for me. The character growth was brilliant and subtle, and the relationship between the two men was unique and slow burning before it burst into (conscious) flame!
The writing's not stellar and the way the plot was worked wasn't that great at times, but the concept is interesting. All in all, it was a worthwhile read, I'd say.
= =""" to me docela pobavilo no... a kdyz tam maj incuby a ocividne existuje i posedlost demony..tak ten problem resi jen s doktorama, kteri o tom nic nevi? nikomu to tam neprijde divny? Katica Locke. Not your ordinary author I tell you that. She's like the sadist to my masochistic soul.
If you happen to get your lucky, lucky (depends on who you ask) hands on Katica Locke then you should know:
1. She's insanely good at world building No stone left unturned or magic left unexplained. It's fresh, new, and insanely original.
2. Dark, edgy romance Be prepared to hate, get frustrated, and cry. This woman can play your emotion like nobody's business I tell you that. The stories are sick and twisted and I love it!
3. Once you are in; Locke fucking owns your soul Basically, she has your time, attention and controls your emotion. Whether you like it or not.
If you're asking for a convoluted *airqoute* romance, Locke will deliver.
When I first read about both MC 'problems/conditions' I though "WTF, it's ridiculous", but these worked in the fantasy setting. There were even more angst and less sex then I expected (kudos). I enjoyed the story very much.
From the summary I thought it would be a darker read - the guys are actually quite sweet despite their conditions. An interesting world which I'd like to visit again someday.
