She is your father’s deadliest rival. You’ve been taught to hate her. But what if you can’t resist her?
Jules
From the moment I learned my father was the head of the biggest crime family in Boston, I vowed I would never have anything to do with his “business.” Until Rowan.
When our eyes locked for the first time across that crowded room, her emerald eyes lit an unstoppable fire in me. And when she showed me the warm heart she’s hidden from the world, I knew I couldn’t live without her.
But there’s a twisted war between our rival families. Her father is taking out my loved ones like it’s a sport.
So, instead of running from their seedy underworld, I will stand and fight for her. Because now I finally understand what could drive a person to kill…
Rowan
At first, I just wanted to see if I could tempt the holier-than-thou daughter of my enemy, try the forbidden fruit. But Jules was nothing like the others. She made me work for it.
I’ve done bad, bad things as my father’s second-in-command. Things I’m not proud of. But she stripped all that guilt away.
I don’t have to watch my back with Jules. She is the only person who truly sees me. And I’m addicted.
Butas the tension between our families reaches boiling point and more people get hurt, I know our time is running out. I’ll betray my own father to keep her safe…
But will it be enough?
Full of intense passion and irresistible desire, this wickedly steamy and gritty FF mafia romance is perfect for fans of Penelope Douglas, Sara Cate, J.T. Geissinger and Nicole Fox.

This book was incredible, reminiscent of the classic tale of Romeo and Juliet, but with a modern twist involving gangsters and sapphic element. It is a steamy and action-packed read that keeps the reader captivated throughout.
The connection between Rowan and Jules is undeniable, and their journey together is filled with intense ups and downs. I thoroughly enjoyed the storyline and found it to be well-crafted and engaging.
I thoroughly enjoyed the rivalry between the two families, Monaghan and Calloway. The mobster feud has a long history, it appears to be unavoidable that one or both or neither of the families will ultimately emerge victorious. To discover the outcome, you will need to download this remarkable book.
The book is a captivating read that will keep you hooked from beginning to end. I highly recommend it.

Romeo and Juliet meets Boston crime families meets lesfic 😁
A fun mafia-princess lesfic—I’m not sure if I’ve ever come across this before—Forbidden Girl is a contemporary retelling of Romeo and Juliet, in which Rowan and Juliet are irresistibly drawn to each other very early on. How, given they’re daughters of rival Boston mobsters, are they going to be able to be together?
I don’t want to spoil this for readers who are bound to wonder how closely or not Kristen Zimmer sticks to Billy Shakes’s original, so I’ll talk in general terms. Both leads are strong. Rowan is the butch in the butch-femme combo, but mainly because she’s been brought up to be strong and the heir apparent. Juliet, the femme, has been sheltered from the family business; rather as an advanced economics student, she’s looking for a different path in her life. From those points on, the labels don’t hold so much as the traits of each girl are different but not clichéd per label. This makes the leads much more complex and interesting, and we see why their feelings develop and how.
So from this effective foundation, can Ms. Zimmer spin a gripping tale that immerses the girls and challenges their relationship? The answer is yes. What we get is an enjoyable tale that features some great action, questions loyalty, and explores the ties that bind us. And sneaky plots to change the status quo! I’ve read a review that feels these could be more deeply developed. Possibly… but for me the balance was about right. This isn’t a mobster tale that features some romance; it’s a romance tale that features elements of mobster life. I think Kristen Zimmer has pitched it spot on.
4.5 stars for this reimagining of Romeo and Juliet that delivers. Thank you to the author, to the publisher, Bookoutre, and to NetGalley for the chance to read this and give my honest opinion.
I hate DNF'ing (@10%) this one but unfortunately I just couldn't connect with the story because the , and as a reader who greatly enjoys tension and angst, it fell flat. Which is such a shame because F/F mafia romance had so much potential. I also wasn't a fan of the dialogue. Readers who enjoy mafia romance could still like this one.
Forbidden Girl is a modern-day Romeo and Juliet set against a mafia backdrop, delivering a quick and fast-paced read that kept me engaged from start to finish. While the romance between Juliet and Rowan takes centre stage, the mobster storyline adds a thrilling side plot. You'll need to suspend disbelief a bit, but the engaging story makes it worth it.
Juliet and Rowan, the daughters of rival gang leaders, are completely lovestruck with each other. Their interactions are both steamy and sweet, making their forbidden love story all the more gripping. The narrative's fast pace kept me hooked through all the plot twists and turns.
Though the story is short, it packs a punch with its blend of spice, sweetness, and moments of humour. Personally, I would've loved a bit more angst in their relationship to solidify the forbidden romance.
Many thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for a copy of this novel. ARC provided in exchange for an honest review.
Forbidden Girl by Kristen Zimmer is an electrifying sapphic retelling of Romeo and Juliet, but with a twist. From the moment I started listening, I was hooked by the intense chemistry between Jules and Rowan. This isn’t your typical will-they/won’t-they story—these two are drawn to each other from the start, and I adored watching their bond grow and deepen.
Jules, the daughter of Boston's biggest crime family, vows to stay away from her father's business until she meets Rowan. Rowan, the second-in-command to her own father, Jules's father's deadly rival, initially wants to tempt Jules, but she soon finds herself falling deeply in love. Their love story is filled with spice, passion, and a perfect blend of hardness and softness, violence and tenderness.
Kristen Zimmer did an amazing job illustrating the many facets of these women. Both are fiercely protective of their loved ones and their relationship, showcasing a depth and capacity to love that is truly captivating. The layers to Jules and Rowan’s characters, along with their unwavering commitment to each other, made this a page-turner that kept me on the edge of my seat.
The audiobook, narrated by Kelly Burke and Stephanie Cannon, was a fantastic way to experience Jules and Rowan. Their performances brought the characters to life, adding an extra layer of complexity and emotion to the story.
This is a must-read for anyone who enjoys a steamy, heartfelt romance with strong, multifaceted characters. This thrilling tale of forbidden love and fierce loyalty is one you won’t want to miss.
2 stars. Oof, this was bad. The writing is not my favorite, the dialogue was painful and robotic, I never got attached to any of the characters and the voices of the main characters felt exactly the same. I was only able to tell them apart because one of them is taller and is more of a chapstick lesbian than the other one. That's it.
The worst thing of all though is that the romance between whatever the hell the main characters names are is developed off page! Um, hello? That was certainly a choice. I love romances because I love the journey of watching the characters fall for each other but it doesn’t happen in here and I was pissed. The MCs barely had chemistry so to have them be so madly in love with each other and not show the readers why they were so in love was so bizarre.
This is the second two star book from this author for me so I’m bowing out. I was anticipating this because it’s mafia but then it doesn’t even really deliver on that front either because that whole aspect was goofy af. Just a disappointment all around.
Great start. Barrier laid out, character established and a few smiles at turn of phrase. Both mains have very clear styles and voices. 30% in and there is a plot turn. Interesting because otherwise this romance could go nowhere different, although to be honest, currently I will go anywhere this book takes me. The blurb on the cover promised an addictive and compelling romance. It’s not lying! I often find books billed as romantic blend, which should be 50\50 romance and intrigue or jeopardy or dramatic events. They rarely are that balanced. This is! It’s been a while since this writer published a book, this was worth waiting for. I hope the next is as good but I don’t have to wait as long! 4.5 up to 5 because I was compelled, I really, really needed to know how the happy ever after would happen.
When I think of mafia stories, I think I am about to get danger and morally gray characters. I certainly got the danger. Jules and Rowan’s families are enemies, so the forbidden nature of their relationship brings spice and angst to the book. The retelling of Romeo and Juliet was more prominent than I expected; the homage goes as far as most of the characters’ names. Those who dreamed about a sapphic version of this Shakespeare tale will be thrilled. It meant immediate chemistry and intense love that’s stronger than friends, family, or even life. To me, it was a bit frustrating because I missed all the parts I love about reading a love story blossoming, from bud to beautiful flower. Like I said earlier, I love mafia characters because of the morally gray characters. I didn’t find it here. The characters were either evil or mostly good. Rowan did sinful things, but Zimmer made sure she stayed clean enough for the reader. It is explained that Rowan is different from her dad, thanks to his associate teaching her, but this man is only mentioned, and I would have needed to see it with my own eyes to be convinced. In general, I wished for more time on a deeper level with the characters to really see their layers. The ending was satisfying but too good to be true. I expected the characters to feel way more conflicted. Overall, this book has a good flowing pace and is easy to read, but I wished Zimmer got her hands dirtier and went with a darker, less tamed mafia world. I have no doubt it will be satisfying to most readers. I just have a dark soul.
A modern day sapphic Romeo and Juliet retelling-ish. I enjoyed that this book didn’t have the typical angst, breakup and get back together aspect to it, but had enough action to keep you wanting to read more and know what happened next. I’ll say stick with this one as in the beginning I was struggling a bit but as I kept reading I got more and more invested.
Thank you to the publisher for the arc in exchange for an honest review.
This book was certainly a different read for me, but I found it to be highly enjoyable and very entertaining! We didn’t have Romeo and Juliet, but we had Rowan and Juliet. Rowan was the tough butch who was being groomed to take over for her father, the kingpin. Jules (Juliette) was a beautiful blonde, an intelligent economics major. She had been forced to live the life her father chose for her. The ladies found each other and bonded, in spite of the violence, confrontations and family drama created by their rival fathers. There was going to be no denying the steamy, passionate desire they had for each other. This book did bring us a lot of adventure, romance and some humorous moments.
The dynamics of the family rivalry was well established and both ladies were forbidden from seeing each other because of the hatred between the fathers. Rowan’s mother had died when she was young. Raised by her father, he maintained so much control that she was forced to be accompanied by bodyguards every time she went out. Jules’ mother was loving, understanding and did all she could to soften her daughter’s situation in dealing with her father. His hatred of Rowan’s father equaled his rival’s.
The tension had been building for years between the two families and the violent culmination was bound to eventually happen. Kristen Zimmer presented an exciting conclusion to this story, but no spoiling the fun for others who are sure to enjoy this adventure.
I really enjoyed this! The only negative was I actually thought it would be MORE spicy due to the title and cover. I enjoyed the relationship between our two fmcs. I loved that this was a spicy sapphic romance, with a side of angst and thrills. The narration was fantastic! I would definitely read more if this was turned into a series. I sincerely appreciate the ALC!
I loved the banter and chemistry between the MCs, but I find the mafia/gangster elements in this book were over simplified so there's definitely need for suspension of disbelief.
Probably the best mafia romance I’ve read. Likeable MCs, a plot with plenty of action, and an anxiety causing build up to, thankfully, a HEA. Well written and worth the read.
Rowan and Jules have some things in common, like being the daughters of two of Boston's biggest crime lords. But their fathers are deadly rivals, caught up in a dispute that has lasted for years, leaving many casualties in its wake -- and meaning that any contact between the two girls is strictly forbidden. When Rowan and Jules meet, though, they have an immediate connection, one that neither of them can ignore. Rowan, who will one day inherit her father's empire, is as tough as nails; Jules, who longs to live a normal life, far away from the violence of the world her family belongs to, has aspirations of going to college and having a career of her own, one that won't involved blood money. But as the two women keep seeing each other, they have to come to terms with the fact that it can't be a secret forever, and that their relationship could be the undoing of everything -- including their families.
This is another book I chose in an effort to venture out of my reading wheelhouse. Not that I never read books like Forbidden Girl -- a mafia lesbian romance -- but for the most part, I typically stick to historical fiction, lit fic, and fantasy. However, I've recently been craving a book that is a little out of my norm, something that is a bit more fun and a little less serious, and I thought this would be a perfect option.
If you're at all familiar with the romance genre these days, you'll know that mafia stories are a dime a dozen, particularly since the "dark romance" trope has become more and more popular. With that being said, I'm sure Forbidden Girl is not the first lesbian mafia romance, but it's certainly one of very few. I've talked about this a bit in some of my other reviews, but while heterosexual romances are allowed toxicity, complications, and darkness, nearly all lesbian ones are reduced to something soft and "unproblematic." I say specifically "lesbian," because this is not an issue that gay men face to the degree that WLW do -- their representation is often allowed to be a little messier, and a little darker, and a little more complex. So, I was very excited and intrigued by the premise of this story, which seemed as if it my hold something quite interesting in its pages.
Unfortunately, Forbidden Girl just didn't quite land for me. The writing is relatively faultless, quite well-done, although it's not my style -- too many witty zingers, not enough exploration of emotional depths -- and I do think that Zimmer is undoubtedly very talented. The plot is pretty thin, but as romances typically focus primarily on characterization and relationship development, this isn't much of a problem for me, unless it's actually nonexistent or too absurd. My main problem lies with Rowan and Jules, our heroines, and the establishing of their relationship: it happens off-page.
Yes, this is a romance, and we don't actually get to see their first kiss, first interaction, or how they came to really be attracted or interested in one another in the first place. It's around the 10-15% mark (I can't recall exactly) when they say "I love you." Other readers might not be bothered by this, but I was baffled by the decision. It felt like a cheap copout to have us already in the middle of their relationship, instead of letting it build and grow in front of our eyes. Isn't a romance half about the anticipation of the first time together, the first date, the complexity of being vulnerable?
It was particularly hard to believe that Rowan, who is extremely repressed with most of her emotions (at least, the ones that aren't anger), would be so easily vulnerable. We could say it's because it's "true love" and Jules unarms her, but if we don't experience any growth to get to that moment, it just falls flat. I really like Rowan's character: she's tough and no-nonsense, but there's obviously a softer core hidden within her, one she has to conceal mainly for her own safety. Jules was less interesting, the princess-type who doesn't have much personality going for her beyond that.
I think it would've been rewarding to get to see Rowan have to go through denial after denial, and it would have made sense not only because of her characterization, but because her romance with Jules is extremely forbidden in the first place. I wanted some back-and-forth, but Rowan and Jules never even argue or disagree, or at least not that I can remember. It was all smooth sailing, aside from the obvious disapproval from their families, and it disappointed me that once again, it seems a lesbian relationship is depicted as absolutely perfect, sunshine and rainbows all of the time.
There's certainly none of the darkness that mafia heroes are allowed; Jules and Rowan are both good people, who only ever act out of love, kindness, or a desire to protect one another. Frankly, it's boring. It would have been interesting to see Rowan more caught up in the gangster lifestyle, perhaps a little more enamored with it, in contrast to Jules's outright dismissal of it. Or perhaps to see her unwillingly drawn into the violence, but occasionally relishing it nonetheless. Anything else would have added a bit of complexity and depth to them, instead of making them seem so wholly virtuous.
Also, why is it that these sexy, contemporary lesbian romances are strangely sexless? There's about three sex scenes, I think, with Rowan and Jules, and they are extremely brief - typically less than a page. I found it a bit underwhelming, especially in comparison to the exploration of sex and chemistry that most heterosexual couples get in their romances. This is just a taste thing, as some people probably prefer less, some prefer more, but it's something I've taken note of that strikes me as a little odd.
However, there were a lot of moments where I did enjoy Rowan and Jules, and for that, I think it deserves two and a half stars. This book held a lot of disappointment for me, but I think my expectations were maybe a little different than what Zimmer was intending to deliver, so perhaps it's my own fault. The writing, as I mentioned above, was also very good, and I think Zimmer did an excellent job of delivering on the details of a gangster lifestyle, and it never seemed as if she were confused or perhaps a bit unsure about what she was writing about. The emotional beats aren't quite there (for the reasons I listed, and because there were times when I was slightly shocked by how Rowan and Jules didn't seem to really care that much about certain things that happen at the end), but I think many readers will find a lot to love in this book.
Not quite a success for me, but again, I must repeat that my expectations might've been skewed. Zimmer is a good writer, and I think she does a good job with making her relationships cute and sweet; this wasn't my cup of tea, but I can already imagine that there will be many people who love this book, and enjoy Rowan and Jules's playful banter.
Unfortunately, this book didn't work for me. There was a time jump that wasn't clear to me in the beginning. Also, the romance happened off-page so there was no emotional attachments to the main characters which essentially made me lose interest in the story.
I’ve never read a mafia romance, but this sapphic romance was the perfect addition to my Pride Month reads. 1. I’m not sure how all mafia romances are but I feel like there were some levels of unrealistic events. I enjoyed them but I’m not sure how believable they were 2. I loved that this book was sweet and romantic. There were high stakes but everything felt like it was going to be ok. Sorta cozy in that aspect. 3. There wasn’t an insane amount of action and it was enough to keep the story going. 4. This book is absolutely a Girl Power novel. The legit power women have in a world run by men. I loved it. I received this book as an ARC with NetGalley and I really am happy to have had the chance to read this story.
OMG! What a gripping story! A modern telling, with a happier ending of Romeo and Juliet. Its also a Sapphic telling. The love between Rowan and Jules is all encompassing but they have to get by their mafia boss fathers first. There's action, intrigue, and plenty of sex! Kristen knocked this out of the park! A favorite! 5 stars!!
I have to admit, once I started reading this one, I got curiouser with each chapter I finished and the author didn't disappoint with the action and suspense and of course my favourite thrill, emotions. The relationship between the two families was bad news but Jules and Rowan had good chemistry and the way they loved and defended one another was absolutely the best part of this book. And Jules' mom is the true champ because the way she came through for my women was truly mending.
I love the title because in both POV, the other "girl" is forbidden to the author but love wins. The sweetness of their romance was good but what I liked the most was how the author wrote Rowan. Very captivating, strength, weakness and all that vulnerability had me weak.
The sapphic Romeo and Juliet we didn’t know we needed! Well reminiscent of but modern and maybe a little less death.
This is my second book by this author and I am ready for more! It took me only a bit to really get into the story, I wish we got to see more of the initial contact between the MCs. The author more than made up for it though through their interactions and chemistry throughout. The spice was done right, not only was it hot but it also flowed with the development of their relationship. Both MCs were relatable and their love believable.
If you’re into sapphic mafia romance then definitely give this a read! Jules and Rowan will have you swooning as well as rooting for them.
This book was hard to put down. It's my first by this author, although I'd heard of them before, but it certainly won't be my last. The story was well-written and captivating, with an interesting plot and great main characters. At first, when they got together at the beginning of the book, I thought nah, it's probably not going to be my cup of tea. Turns out it's was the whole pot of tea and then some! I was right there with the characters, feeling with them and rooting for them. The spice was spot on, too.
⭐⭐⭐⭐ Forbidden Girl by Kristen Zimmer, an audiobook narrated by Kelly Burke and Stephanie Cannonis is an addictive and gripping mafia thriller-romance. I loved the storyline, I loved the setting but something was missing. It was like eating a delicious meal and all you need is a pinch of salt to make it perfect.
I feel that the narrators were chosen so perfectly. The voices went so much together with the characters! Especially Jules!
This is a modern version of Romeo and Juliet!
Jules and Rowan come from families that hate each other. Jules and Rowan love each other. Jules and Rowan can't have happily ever after because there is no chance that their fathers will accept it. What measures they will take to break the hate and have a happy ever after?
It's a spicy romance with a crazy amount of suspense and madness!
Thank you, NetGalley and Bookouture Audio for this copy!
would like to thank netgalley and the publisher for letting me read this gripping novel
jules and rowen.... they are the apple of their fathers eyes.... they are on the opposite sides to each other in the families battles but they are attracted to each other
they both know its dangerous for them to be seen together but they are both a hard habit to break
being rival gangster families makes it so difficult for them to be together but something must break.... hopefully not them
what an intense ride this book is... and one i couldnt put down even if i tried.... and this book doesnt disappoint....
cant wait to read more from this author ...she has a way with words
I enjoyed this, a sapphic version (of sorts) of Romeo & Juliet. Sweet romance with enemies to lovers, overall- good read. I kinda wish there would've been more to their actual "chemistry" but it was good.
How do I describe “Forbidden Girl?” Honestly, I’m not really sure. This story has a lot to it: It’s not only a mafia romance, but it’s a F/F mafia romance! Which is even better, if you ask me. This is also a Romeo and Juliet retelling, but with lesbians! How EPIC is that?! Needless to say, I went in psyched, especially after reading that dedication and the blurb. It sounded perfect and right up my alley. But… I had to rate this two stars. And that’s mostly for the lesbian rep and references to Romeo and Juliet. If it didn’t have lesbians and those cute easter eggs, it would have been a one star read. I DID really try to get into the book. But, from the first chapter, I knew this wasn’t for me. It doesn’t read like a mafia romance at all, something I was promised in the description. Nothing seems high stakes enough to constitute as mafia, even with the whole Juliet’s father thing (Sorry, I can’t remember his name at all.) Anyway. Let’s get into it. PLOT: The plot was…. I’m not sure what to say. It has mafia moments, but none of it felt super intense or… well, “mafia-like.” I’ve read a lot of mafia romances, most of them straight, so I really thank the author for having a lesbian mafia romance! But, they all included more action sequences and moments that felt intense and super high-stakes. “Forbidden Girl,” just didn’t have that. And speaking of the title, the relationship didn’t feel very “forbidden.” Sure, we have the fathers not liking their relationship, but the girls don’t really care and continue the relationship no matter what. Therefore, I just didn’t feel the whole “forbidden romance” vibes from this. Most of the time, we actually saw them fighting for their relationship and they were never really cut off from each other. Even when they were apart and forbidden to see each other, they were still able to talk on the phone, so… And why did we only get a summary of how they started their relationship? From the first chapter, I thought we would see their relationship start and both of them attempt to resist the pull they had to each other. Because, well, it’s forbidden, right? But, instead, we skip past that with a summary of how “it was impossible to resist.” Then we jump into the middle of their relationship the next chapter without seeing how it began. This book needed more angst and mafia stuff. I’ll leave it at that. CHARACTERS: I did like the characters. They were really sweet and sappy with each other, and had their own characteristics and defining features. It was easy to distinguish their POVs, which was great. But… Some of the things the characters said were just so… there’s no other word, it was cringey. They often didn’t read like twenty-year-olds, and what is with all the “we’re so lesbian” comments? I don’t know, there were so many mentions of how “lesbian” they act. We already know that. They’re literally in a F/F book. They’re LITERALLY dating women. I think that gets the point across. And the other characters? I don’t know what to say. The mafia fathers just felt un-mafia like, if that makes sense. They had a weird, anti-climatic end, too, but I won’t spoil that for anyone who might want to read the book. Juliet’s mom, (can’t remember her name, either), was refreshing and supportive. We love a strong mom character who carries a gun in her purse. No complaints. I also want to mention that a lot of the thoughts Juliet and Rowan had about men were very sexist. I understand that this is a book about girl power, but I kind of felt uncomfortable with how often they put down men. I’m not trying to say the author is sexist or that this book is inherently sexist, either, but I wish we had less mentions of men being stupid and ego-driven. Not every man is like that, and I don’t think these comments and thoughts from our characters were essential to the story. They could have been removed, and I would have enjoyed this book a bit more. FINAL THOUGHTS: This book has a seriously good foundation, but the execution was maybe a bit shaky. I wanted more page time for the beginning of Juliet and Rowan’s relationship. The angst would have been very welcome in this book, as would the “will they, won’t they” aspect. I probably would have bumped this to three stars if these things were included. However, I think people who want to explore a F/F Romeo and Juliet retelling with a bit of mafia flavor sprinkled in will enjoy this book a lot!
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for this ARC
A delicious, steamy, sapphic retelling of Romeo and Juliet. Mafia daughters from rival families find love with each other.
I received an advance copy from Netgalley and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Juliette Calloway is the daughter of a Boston Mafia Boss. She spent her life trying to be as minimally involved in her family’s business as possible. Using her excellent skills at cunningly playing her controlling dad Patrick Calloway to get what she wants, Juliette even got to leave Boston for college. At school she got to experience life as a free woman. And that is all she wants. Being a woman uncontrolled by her dangerous dad. Back home for the summer she meets Rowan Monaghan, daughter of the rival mafia king and heir to the Monaghan throne. Sure, Juliette has heard of Rowan. She’s supposed to be ice cold and violent. Never would Jules have expected Rowan to be the woman she falls for. And falling she does.
Rowan Monaghan is the only daughter of one of Bostons top mafia bosses. She spent her life being groomed for a future in crime working as a pawn for her dad Callum Monaghan. As much as she learned how to put the fear of death into people, she despises her life. At the birthday party of her best friends niece, Rowan meets the most beautiful woman she’s ever seen. She knows Juliette Calloway is the one woman she can never have, yet, Rowan can’t stay away. Faster than she could have fired a bullet, Rowan succumbs to her hearts desires. Now what?
I effing loved this book! It’s a modern retelling of the epic Shakespeare romance between Romeo and Juliette. While that may get old fast , Forbidden Girl keeps you on your toes and sweeps you away with passion and danger. I couldn’t put it down!
Rowan and Juliette each grew up in a classic mobster family. Juliette as the daughter that her father feels the need to control and protect all the time. Rowan as the fearless future crime boss she has no desire to become. Both women are working hard towards a future that will allow them to live as themselves. They do so in their own unique ways. Juliette with the help of her mom and Rowan is determined to carve out a life for her and Juliette by defying her dad.
When these two remarkable women get together, nothing can stop them. They do what they have to do, even if it means they have to burn some terrifying, familial bridges. Both Juliette and Rowan are strong independent women, despite their unfortunate upbringing. They each bring unique qualities to the table that enhance the other’s. Together they can take on the world, and that they do.
Because this is a retelling of a classic story, you can guess how it all plays out. The details of how that happens are addictive and even though you generally know what’ll happen Kristin Zimmer keeps you on your toes. There’s even a very spicy version of the infamous balcony scene!
Whatever you do, put this story on your TBR right now and let yourself be taken into the dangerous underworld of crime and undeniable love.
Update: I received the audiobook from NetGalley and Bookouture. The narrators did a great job of bringing Kristen’s story to life. I loved it just as much as the ebook. It kept my interest even though I had already read the arc last month. I highly recommend listening to this yummy story to even more fully immerse yourself into the experience.
Brava! I have enjoyed all of Kristen’s books, but this one is her best so far and definitely my favorite. The story is well written in a two person perspective that flows well and is so addictive. I didn’t want to put it down. It has the elements I enjoy; sapphic characters, a great plot, intrigue, gripping, heat and spice, family dynamics, and well developed characters. All contained in a book with a sexy cover!
Rowan and Juliet (love the play on Shakespeare here) are the daughters of two rival mob bosses in Boston.Their attraction to each other is intense and their connection must be hidden. Rowan is second in command in her father organization and he has arranged for her to marry the daughter of another crime family to join their families, but she does not love her. Juliet is home on break from college, staying with her Irish father and Italian mother. Unlike Rowan, she is not part of the inner working of her father’s organization.
As their feelings for each other grow they will be tested by the rivalry of their families. As Rowan’s father targets Jules’ family their bond becomes even stronger and they are faced with the difficult decision to stand against their fathers.
This book was a great ride that left me wanting more. Rowan and Jules were both easy to like and root for. I also liked Jules mother and their relationship dynamic. I have a feeling I will read it again and hope to listen to it in audio! I would give it more than 5 stars if I could.
First I would like to mention that I love this cover. I have a similar pair of shoes. They are my favorite ones by far and they make me feel like I am on top of the world when I wear them. But enough about me. :)
I love gangland crimes and when I saw 'mafia' I knew it would be a book for me. Romance and gangland are like water and fire you would think, but not at all. Even the toughest gangster needs someone to love.
Jules and Rowan's fathers are both crime bosses and rivals. One of them is very protective of his daughter and watches her like a hawk. She is a like a beautiful bird, but locked in a golden cage. The other father turns his daughter into a gangster too.
When the two women meet, it's the start of the end. But for whom?
This book reads like a train racing through scenes that are action packed, steamy, romantic and heart breaking.
This book was unexpected, neither good nor bad, just different from what I had thought it would be. That being said I enjoyed Rowan and Juliet's story, it was sweet and the sense of humor did not disappoint so that made up for my expectations being shot down (my issue not the author's). I hope you enjoy it cause it is well worth the read.
Thanks Kristen for writing this story, I had fun reading it!
