Francesca Simon grew up in California and attended both Yale and Oxford Universities, where she specialised in Medieval Studies. How this prepared her to write children’s books she cannot imagine, but it did give her a thorough grounding in alliteration.
She then threw away a lucrative career as a medievalist and worked as a freelance journalist, writing for the Sunday Times, Guardian, Mail on Sunday, Telegraph, and Vogue (US). After her son Joshua was born in 1989, she started writing children’s books full time. One of the UK’s best-selling children’s writers, Francesca has published over 50 books, including the immensely popular HORRID HENRY series, which has now sold over twelve million copies.
Francesca won the Children’s Book of the Year in 2008 at the British Book Awards for Horrid Henry and the Abominable Snowman. HORRID HENRY is published in 24 countries and is also an animated CITV series. She lives in London with her husband, son, and Tibetan Spaniel, Shanti.
Reason for Reading: Our son has reading difficulties and after much debate the family bought an ereader. Ds read this book aloud as his reader and as his very first ebook. Horrid Henry is a favourite of his.
This book was exactly what one expects from Horrid Henry. After having read only the first book in the series ds and I are both fans. Reading this book further along in the series we found two things had changed, Henry has gotten somewhat meaner *but* he usually ends up with the short end of the stick when all is said and done, which makes his escapades easier to swallow when you know he won't totally get away with it. Ds finds Harry funny and is continuously going "Oh Man!" with the things he gets up to but ds also thinks Henry is a bit too much and takes things too far. He wouldn't like to have him in his class, that is for sure! We both really enjoyed all the stories in this book and we agree upon our favourite being the titular one where he accidentally wears girl's underwear to school.
This book was very hard for ds to read, so we read pretty much in tandem with me reading any words he struggled with to avoid frustration as he thoroughly enjoyed the ebook reading experience and took to it like a fish to water. He says he wants all his books on the Kindle now. Well that isn't going to exactly happen but we are going to take advantage of this format and see if it is the thing that will set off his reading abilities.
I chose this book as I am collecting books to read to my year 3 class. I thought this would really appeal to that age range and especially engage the boys.
It was horrid Henry's birthday and he recieves a late present from his aunt Greta, a lovely pink pair of lacy knickers. Aunt Greta, despite many reminders thinks that Henry is a girl!! After hiding the knickers away in his drawer, Henry accidently puts them on one day when he is late for school. The story of how Henry tries to hid the pink pants from everyone follows. He looks in lost property for some boys pants, he tries to persuade his friend to swap with him but all to no avail. He finally decided to take them off as having no pants is much better than having girls pants. When the teacher tells him that it is P.E time, Henry announces that he cannot do it because he has no pants on...the teacher has found a pair he can borrow...a lovely pink lacy pair.
I think that this book would appeal to year 2 or year 3. The children would find the book funny and it would be a light-hearted way to approach some of the issues in the book such as Henry being un-kind to other children in the playground.
It has lovely illustrations in the book which match the text. It is an Early reader book so it bridges the step between picture books to more word based books.
The Horrid Henry books are a fantastic read. Henry is always trying to find an excuse to get out of doing things. Henry tries to get out of going to school, eating vegetables, writing thank you notes for gifts and many others. Henry’s attitude gets him into lots of trouble as he continues to make a nuisance of himself. He's often compared with his brother perfect Pete who is everything a parent hopes for. There are numerous Horrid Henry books which children find entertaining. This book is a favourite of mine as Henry finds himself wearing the wrong underpants with surprisingly dreadful consequences.
I LOVE HEnRY PANTS!!!! Very funny and moving read about some underpants henry is not so horrid but his smelly pants are!!! The twist where harold shipman turned up and fought Henry was a bit weird but still a thrilling read filled with love, laughter and plenty of horrid scenes.
It was very good my favrite one was horrid Henry's underpants where one of his aunty's thought he was a girl and got him pink thrill pants it was realy funny

Horrid Henry's underpants is a book with 4 short stories.
The first about horrid Henry eatting his vegetables, which he wasn't very keen on, so in true horrid Henry style he tricked mum and dad into believing he had eaten them a whole 5 days in order to get a treat. The treat being to eat at his favourite restaurant. At the end of the week after he had fooled the whole family they go to Gobble and go for dinner but find its closed and replaced by a rest that specialises in vegetables, which mum and dad think are perfect now Henry's a huge fan!
The second is about a pair of pink, frilly, hearts printed all over them, pair of PANTS that aunt greta had given him as a present, which he hides in embarrassment in his pant draw. That is until one day he is late for school and rushes to get dressed and puts on those PANTS! It isn't until he is at school that he realises. He tries to solve his problem but nothing seems to work so he gets rid of the pants and goes pant less, it was nearly the end of the day and last lesson and nobody knew he had pink pants or was now pant less. Except the last lesson happened to be PE!
Sick day, the third story. Peter Henry's younger brother is ill and gets the day off school so Henry fakes being ill so he too could stay at home. He had so many ideas of things to do while at home, TV, computer, games but if he was ill, he was to stay in bed. His plan back fires and it turns out thw whole family if ill but him and he has to run around looking after everyone. School seems the better option after all.
The final story horrid Henry's thank you letter. Henry has a plan for everything. He was asked to write thank you letters for the gifts he received at Christmas and so he did, although, they were not very nice ones. This triggered a plan, he was to set up a business writing thank you letters for the children in the neighbourhood to give to their families. He cut all corners and made a general letter to send to everyone, again his plan back fired and all the children got into trouble and Henry was to blame!
This book is aimed at key stage 2. The quick short stories are ideal as you could read a while story at once with a child. Although Henry comes up with all these crazy, imaginative plans they never seem to go his way. The moral of the story is to think things through, your first idea may not always be the best. I think the children would find the book laugh out loud funny!
Francesca Simon has written many books about the character Horrid Henry and his family and friends. In the story ‘Horrid Henry’s underpants’, Henry is given a pair of girly knickers as a birthday present from his Great Aunt Greta. He is horrified by the gift and hides the present at the back of his drawer. A month later, Henry wakes up late for school and has to rush to get ready. When he arrives at school, he realises that he has put on the girly knickers. Henry has to avoid anyone finding out but unfortunately he has PE last lesson. What will Henry do?
Francesca Simon has written many stories about the character Horrid Henry and the books have been very popular with children. When reading this story to a year two class, the children found the book very funny and entertaining, especially when I read the words ‘underpants’ and ‘frilly pink lacy knickers.’ They also particularly liked the scene where Henry imagines his teacher, Miss Battle- Axe having to walk around every day with pants stuck to her head.
The author uses alliteration to describe characters in the story for example Horrid Henry, Perfect Peter and Moody Margaret. This can help children predict characters actions as they would have an idea about the characters personality. The Horrid Henry books are set in locations familiar to children for example home and school and deal with things that children experience. For example,in the book ‘Horrid Henry eats a vegetable,’ Henry has to find ways to avoid eating vegetables and believes they are disgusting, a view held by many children.
I think the Horrid Henry books would be good to use with children in key stage 1 and children in lower key stage 2. It would be a good book to read at the end of the school day and to have copies on the class book shelf for children to read independently.
Horrid Henry is always trying to get out of things: going to school, eating vegetables, writing thank you notes for gifts, a baby’s baptism... He also spends a lot of energy coming up with schemes that he thinks will help him get his way. And often he’s pitted against his younger brother, Perfect Peter, who is everything a parent could love in a child that Henry is not.
The series of books that has Horrid Henry trying out one scheme after another is really funny for beginning readers. Three new additions have been added to the series this fall: Horrid Henry and the Mummy’s Curse, Horrid Henry’s Underpants, and Horrid Henry and the Scary Sitter.
Each book has four stories all featuring Henry living down to expectations in some way. Many times his plotting is found out and foiled by parents and teachers, but sometimes his elaborate plans to get his way at the expense of others actually succeed. Kids will love to see how he gets in and out of his scrapes with authority.
The Horrid Henry books by Francesca Simon has delighted nearly 15 million young readers in 27 languages since the series started. Younger siblings of mother-daughter book club members are sure to be happy with these new additions.
Horrid Henry's Underpant written by Francesca Simon illustrated by Tony Ross. The book was really funny. Not ownly was it adout underpants , it had four other funny stories. What I like about the book was, that he had a lesson taught to him about being sneaky in the story like, how he doesn't want to eat vegtables, then it back fires.
Also, I had a comparison, atext to self, just how he doesn't want to eat he's vegtables. Somtimes I don't wan't to eat my vegtables, just sometimes.Aslo I love how it easy to read.Likehow it a quick read, and how it was clear to read.
The characters were very good in the book.Like how horrid henry was actual horrid. There was nothing I disliked about the book. I would give this book five stars. So a little summary about the book. He recieves a gift from Great Aunt Greta,Greta thinks he's a girl and gives him big underpants. if you want to find out more, you will have to read this book.
I think this book is really funny and I really enjoyed reading it once I read I kept thinking for days and days about this book even when I was in school my library had tones loads of horrid Henry books and I always use to pick the Underpants because it was ever so funny and I think that horrid Henry is the best horrid boy ever! His books are so funny and I am a fan of reading horrid Henry books because are very funny and when you read books of him you keep imagining in your brain so deep that makes you love his horridness. You can do whatever to make me hate it but I will never because HORRID HENRY rocks and I’m telling u this so you can read horrid Henry
Do you know that I like to read books than watching episodes
The only reason I read was out of curiosity as my son was going on and on about how horrid Henry was in horrid Henry! The book calls for each character with a alliteration and honestly I am happy that there were none for the parents! It was a laugh out loud for my son but not quite much for me.
This book's got 4 small stories, one about how Henry tricks his parents by not eating vegetables, one about a pink underpants he got as a gift as one of his aunt's think he is a girl, one about a day he calls sick as his brother is genuinely sick, and finally one about writing 'No thank you letters' when one gets stupid things as gifts for Christmas!
Horrid Henry dad is so are annoy from Francesca Simon Francesca Simon all ways get annoys from horrid Henry dad Francesca good at barbecue Henry show Francesca Simon his fort purple hanging fort horrid Henry mum not happy at all with Francesca Simon and Henry dad too
I love horrid Henry and the mum and dad always says don’t be horrid, Henry! And sometimes they shout out loud like this don’t be horrid, Henry!!!!! What do you say what do you say OK you say yes or no don’t lol and don’t SOS ha ha, ha, ha, I am being mischief like horrid, Henry.
Read with my Year 2 class at the end of art lessons. They love the stories, but they’re a little dated and aren’t aging well in terms of gendered comments and stereotypes.
