Alexandra Beaumont is a British fantasy novelist with a passion for folklore, playing musical instruments and exploring the wilds of the UK. Specialising in gothic and folkloric literature, Alexandra's lyrical books weave together myth, magic and intrigue.
I'd seen some great reviews for this book, so I took a chance and signed up for the blog tour, and I'm so glad I did! I haven't read much folklore or myths and legends, but I have been wanting to try and increase my reading of them. This has certainly whetted my appetite to read more. I loved this. It is so well written and fascinating that the story lingers long after you finish it.
Dissonance of Birdsong is a must-read for enthusiasts of folklore. The tone and style of writing are reminiscent of much older narratives and lend themselves to creating the perfect atmosphere for this story.
Eseld as a main character is understandable of not completely likable. She is firm in her convictions and always willing to act to make the world better for her sister. We follow her on her journey to save the hometown that cast her out all for the sake of her sister.
The sister Nessa is actually much more likable and open. I’m hoping for a follow-up about her someday.
The world and the magic system are completely unique. The myst, the birds, and the different magical talents are all whole fascinating. A little vague in places, but that doesn’t take away from the charm of the story.
The pacing is pretty slow, but I think that has to do with the mysterious tone the author chooses to go with.
Overall, an enjoyable read. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this book.
In the mystical landscape of ancient Cornwall, where the tumultuous sea meets the rugged cliffs, Alexandra Beaumont weaves a mesmerizing tale of folklore and fantasy in "Dissonance of Bird Song." Set against the backdrop of stormy seas and whispering winds, this enchanting novel follows the journey of Eseld, a young song-weaver on a quest to cure the sacred birds of her people and rescue her beloved sister from the clutches of an ancient sea queen.
Beaumont's prose dances effortlessly between the lyrical and the visceral, painting a vivid tapestry of a world where magic and mythology intertwine with the harsh realities of survival. From the haunting melodies of Eseld's songs to the roaring waves crashing against the cliffs, the author's descriptive prowess brings each scene to life with immersive detail.
At the heart of the narrative lies Eseld, a compelling protagonist whose courage and determination propel the story forward. As she navigates through a landscape fraught with danger and deception, Eseld grapples with her own inner conflicts, torn between loyalty to her people and the call of her own destiny. Her journey is a testament to the power of resilience and self-discovery, as she learns to trust her instincts and forge her own path in the face of adversity.
The supporting cast is equally rich and nuanced, from the enigmatic sea queen to the steadfast companions who accompany Eseld on her quest. Each character brings their own depth and complexity to the story, adding layers of intrigue and emotion to the unfolding narrative.
At its core, it is a tale of sacrifice and redemption, of love and loss, and of the enduring strength of the human spirit. With its captivating blend of folklore, fantasy, and adventure, "Dissonance of Bird Song" is a must-read for fans of mythic fiction and epic storytelling. Alexandra Beaumont has crafted a spellbinding debut that will linger in the minds of readers long after the final page has been turned.
Thanks to the author and ZooLoo's Book Tours for the gifted ebook to take part in the tour.
I have always enjoyed mythology, legends, and folklore ever since I can remember. I saw the blurb for Dissonance of Bird Song and knew I had to read it.
The reader follows Eseld, a song-weaver in her journey, to try to cure her people's sacred birds and to rescue her sister from an ancient sea queen. It's an enchanting, mesmerising, beautifully woven story in which Alexandra Beaumont perfectly balances the magic of mythology, folklore, and legends with a tale of how harsh life is. Her vivid imagery brings the setting to life. I was almost hypnotised by this story.
Eseld herself is a woman who proves herself to be resilient and determined. She is a multi layered character with flaws as we all have. I felt her courage and total determination as I read. She is torn between her loyalty and her own need to follow her destiny. I did feel for her throughout, seeing her struggle at times pulled on my heartstrings, and I just wanted her to succeed.
Every character adds their own unique voice to the narrative. This creates a story that doesn't just weave magic, myths, and folklore together. It also enriches the storytelling to a mesmerising level. I would love to see a second book set within this world, but we shall have to wait and see. A highly recommended read for anyone who appreciated superbly woven stories.
Thank you to @zooloosbooktours and the author/publisher for allowing me a copy of this book to review. It's my turn on the tour to babble!
If you like folklore fantasy, this book is for you. An overall very quick read that feels like an old school classic. The writing is stunning. Sometimes I didn't know if I was focusing on the actual story, or just how it was being told. It's very lyrical, almost like reading poetry. I felt like I was there alongside the characters, feeling the air on my face, hearing the conversations. The author did such a fantastic job of bringing this world and it's setting to life. Even if the blurb doesn't take your fancy immediately, you should read this book for it's writing style alone.
This story has hung with me emotionally and physically with almost a nostalgic longing. I finished it almost a week ago and I find the story washing over me at random times. It’s like I’m laying on a beach with the warm salty waves softly flowing over me then slowly dragging the sand back out from beneath me. It’s comforting. Dissonance is a folk tale with a harsh and beautiful atmosphere where people and the environment have a symbiotic relationship to keep each other alive. It is wild, elegant, weird, and mystical. “we were a settlement hiding our desperate need to inhale and replenish the sacred Sea-Myst from the lungs of our birds behind a beautiful ceremony. The birds couldn’t come too soon.” The writing is graceful and lonely. I could feel the quiet of the grass brushing my legs with nothing but the wind and the occasional cry of the birds. Wondrous characters bring forth a theme of who can you trust with the answer usually being, no one. Dissonance is an incredibly apt name for this book as the soulful writing balances out the severe life and atmosphere that Eseld, her twin sister Nessa, and their clan live in. However, this story spans so much more than their little island.
This was a wonderfully atmospheric YA/New Adult novel that draws heavily from Cornish folklore, specifically about merfolk. 🧜🏼♀️
The story follows Eseld who finds herself set against the clock to discover the cure that plagues her village’s mystical birds, the Mystcran. I thought she was a bit reckless with her thought process and also a bit too trusting, but I loved her tenacious spirit and desire to right the wrongs done to her and her two sister. I am a bit curious though if her love and call to the sea was something that was passed down to her through a past Moroven/Moren in her ancestry as she seems to take to being a mermaid quickly. 🤔
As much as I had fun with reading this, I did finish the book with some lingering questions about the world. First, what exactly is myst and how does it give powers to those who use it? Is it like fairy food that once you have it, you get addicted to it? Also, how do the birds get picked for their humans? Do children get the birds young or as teenagers when they can form bonds with them? And lastly: how did the people on the island the birds roost on during the winter get there in the first place? ❓
But other than these questions, I thought this was a great read! I’d been dying to read a Cornish folklore inspired fantasy for a long time, and I feel happily accomplished. Now I just need to find a Manx/Isle of Man inspired fantasy. . . 🇮🇲
Big thank you goes out to Brigids Gate Press and NetGalley for accepting my request to read this in exchange for an honest review, and to the author, Beaumont, for crafting a wonderful Cornish mermaid story! 💙
If like me you are a lover of folklore and like to think of yourself as a budding folklorist you need to read this book. I have always loved folklore, myths and legends and since moving to Devon and studying my BA in Cornwall I’ve been lucky to be close to a lot of nautical folk tales. I have to say that Beaumont captures the mysticism you can feel when walking the shorelines.
Beaumont not only captures this but weaves in myths and folklore to create a captivating and atmospheric read that you cannot help but be swept up in. At it’s heart the story deals with love in all it’s forms. The love of a sister, the love of the land (and sea) and so much more. This is mixed into a beautiful written fantasy that keeps you engaged throughout.
In Dissonance of Bird Song we see historical facts, folklore and legends all interwoven expertly to create a tale that is as believable and immersive as it is imaginative. I adored the characters, partially Eseld and Nessa. I will say that Eseld took a little while to warm to but she was incredibly human in the way she acted if not a little reckless at times. Nessa on the other hand seemed more open and likable right away. Now I actually liked this because we saw a realistic relationship between sisters and we got to see Eseld develop throughout the story.
Now I never spoil novels, but I will say that Beaumont leaves enough scope for perhaps (and hopefully in my opinion) another novel set in this world. I would love to learn more about what else lurks there. If you love atmospheric reads with folkloric flourishes and a wonderfully developed cast of characters this one is for you.
My what a beautiful book this was. This is my review of Dissonance of Bird Song by Alexandra Beaumont. Set in Cornwall, this book is based on folklore and myth. When the birds Eseld, her sister Nessa and their village rely upon to survive begin to fall ill and die., Eseld is determined to discover the reason why and find a cure. It’s difficult to review this book without spoiling it for others, but the writing, the descriptions of the people Nessa meets on her journey and place just pull you in, and I found myself completely immersed in the world of Cornish legend. The songs of Nessa captivated me and Alexandra has such a beautiful way with words that I really didn’t want to leave this world of myst and mystery. The glossary is also a great addition and I was fascinated to learn what some of names and words meant. Dissonance of Bird Song is such a wonderful book that for me it deserves no less than 5 stars.
Haunting tale of ancient times; beautiful and tragic word pictures I chose to read this book because I loved the title, the cover and the description. Because of its lyrical qualities, I must admit it took a few pages to get the feel for it. Once that happened however, I needed to see where the author would take us next. Eseld and her people believe the Myst from the sea provided by their Mystcran birds is what keeps them alive. This year as in recent past the birds arrive sickly and some even die. Their bird’s death sends the villager to the tin mines called Picking Pits where they are never seen again. Eseld takes it upon herself to find the cure. The events that follow will cause happiness, sorrow and consternation. Honestly, there were times when I was wondering if this fable was inspired by Ulysses’ odyssey with his many trials to get back home. I volunteered to review an ARC of this book through BookSirens. If you enjoy ancient historical tales that are full of people doing amazing things for those they love or to those they hate, try reading this book.
An ARC of this book was given to me through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
This is fantasy a bit more focused on folklore, with a world and type of magic I hadn't seen a lot before. It's not overly explained either so you are kind of just let go into this world and you pick up everything from context. It feels very oldschool in style.
As for cons however, I found the dialogue to be a bit clumsy and the characters too one-note. Eseld is way too trusting, Nessa has no agency, Perran is Perran (how many chances does one person deserve??). With a lot of events happening I had an "ok...?" reaction. It had trouble drawing me in. I also think the cover could be much better. It feels very amateuristic right now.
Loved the descriptions of landscapes and environments - they were incredibly vivid and brought the story to life. The storyline lets you get lost in the folklore and mythology of it, and the book builds characters which you buy into and want to learn more about
Dissonance of Bird Song by Alexandra Beaumont. I did like the cover and blurb of this book. The cover was different and unique. This was a different genre for me. I've never read Folklore. I'm glad I did. This was a quick and easy read. It made a nice change of pace for me. I had to get used to the writing style. I did like the characters, especially Nessa. She was my favourite. Esald grew on me she was firm in her convictions, always willing to do what was best for her sister. I was surprised with the ending
Eseld flees into the myst looking for a cure for the sacred birds her village depend on. Doing so means she leaves her beloved twin sister behind and in danger. A story of love and betrayal I really enjoyed Dissonance of Bird Song by Alexandra Beaumont. Mysterious and compelling the characters are well formed and I found myself lost in this strange world of magical birds and people of the sea. I found it interesting to read a tale whose roots are in Cornish myths. I e heard there is to be a sequel and I look Forward to returning to the world of myst and met people.
Would you sacrifice everything so that your community could continue to thrive? Would you risk a fate worse than death for them? What about madness? And would you do it even if the religious leader of your community was someone whom you knew you couldn't trust? These are just the beginning of Eseld’s questions to herself. If she wouldn't risk it all for her community – what about for the life of her sister?
Alexandra Beaumont's DISSONANCE OF BIRDSONG (Brigid's Gate, 2024) is a unique blend of poeticism and folk horror that she has become known for in the UK. A lifelong fan of the Gothic, she often cleverly weaves these themes and tropes within her narratives. Her work can be deeply personal, combining exciting narratives with thoughtful perspectives on the social issues of the day.
DISSONANCE OF BIRDSONG takes place in a mythical version of ancient Cornwall, and as with all good Gothic narratives the very landscape of Kernow becomes a character within the narrative. Reading this book, you will be hard-pressed not to feel the salt spray chill your skin, reel from the ebb of the waves, or sense harsh rock faces beneath your feet. An exciting plot steeped in folklore contrasts the decidedly Gothic setting.
Eseld is part of a community living on the shores of ancient Cornwall whose very existence is intertwined with a local population of birds. The birds migrate to the shores to breed each year, giving up their Myst to the person to which they've bonded, in exchange for safekeeping until the young have hatched and are old enough to fly away once more. Only now, the birds have been dying, with fewer returning each year. To lose your bird is to succumb to madness and eventual death. Eseld's bird has fallen ill, and she needs to find the cure.
Eseld's journey is a harrowing one, interlaced with folklore that will thrill readers of all ages. It takes her deep beneath the waves, and to far distant shores, interspersed with song. Eseld is a compelling heroine, disabled and determined, and her story is inspirational without ever being cloying. DISSONANCE OF BIRDSONG is an exciting adventure that heralds a new kind of fantasy sure to appeal to young adult readers and general audiences alike.
Beaumont is an author to watch. The way myth, folklore, culture and landscape are woven together with a tightly knitted blanket of prose. The creativity of ideas and bold use of said ideas in the midst of an ever evolving narrative and strong characters, makes it a treat to emerge yourself into as a reader.
Eseld holds power – wielded at times, but always with a lack of knowledge of presence. As we begin the story there is merely the picture of young innocent person with a strong will to survive and save her friends, loved ones and the people who are equally reliant on the healthy birds. Birds that are life, are the essence of life for a whole community. Without them they are doomed to die, go mad or be delegated to forced labour.
Eseld is determined to find out why the birds are going missing, and the remaining ones are becoming so ill they are unable to sustain the people they are connected to. Now that in itself sounds like a fascinating plot, but it’s actually just the tip of the iceberg.
I was particularly fascinated by the myst, the birds and the way the two determine the survival of Eseld and her people. The concept leans into magical realism, mists of folklore with a cemented core in fantasy. I wonder if the world will be revisited at some point?
So I have a complicated relationship when it comes to this book.
Which is only fair because it's a complicated story.
It's an amazing world the writer has built, capturing this folklore island lost in mist and time, people struggling to survive and in it all, our main character who wants to do more than survive, but thrive.
There were so many fascinating, incredible ideas, sparks of story and that raised my first issue with it - there is so much here, crammed in a not very long book. Almost each chapter introduces a new character, location, plot point or twist, the story racing along at a breakneck pace, with the reader almost dragged along for the ride. It almost feels as if it would have worked better if there had been less, if the story had been smaller so the writer could really develop the brilliant ideas she had. I wanted to know more about each location or person, I wanted to dig deeper and just breathe.
The best moments in the book were when the writer did just that - the scenes with Eseld and Perran after they have left the cave are haunting, tension filled triumphs and I just wish those smaller, slower moments were allowed to develop more.
My only other thing to note is the content warnings, while appreciated, do not accurately represent the potential triggers in this book. There are dark elements, which are good but need to be treated as such.
This was such a compelling and rich fantasy novel. The author breathed fresh life into folklore and intertwined it throughout this narrative, which was incredible. The artful, stylistic writing style allowed the reader to feel transported to this land, bringing a cinematic experience that felt like a blend of Adrienne Young's book Sky in the Deep and the Netflix series The Last Kingdom.
The world-building and character development in this novel were outstanding. The protagonist's emotional bond with the people she is sworn to protect and the magical system and world that she immerses herself in make this a gripping story to get lost in. This novel's balance of action and mythology and the exploration of druids and their culture made the book fascinating and mesmerizing.
The Verdict
Remarkable, thoughtful, and compelling author Alexandra Beaumont’s “Dissonance of Bird Song” is a fantastic and thrilling fantasy and folklore novel. The twists and turns that keep the journey alive and the immersive world-building will keep readers invested and eager for a sequel to this fantastic new fantasy series.
There is a lot I could say but I will keep it brief.
This book has a genuine un-put-downable quality. Throughout I found myself driven to read the next chapter, the book really did pull me in and keep me engaged until the end.
There are some brilliant and clever ideas at play here, the concept of the world and the structures within it are inspired - there are so many potential stories and directions for it. There are some passages of beautifully written text to enjoy too.
My biggest criticism is the pace. The plot moves so quickly, constantly pulling the reader into something new without giving the story or the characters time to settle. The result of this is that some of the moments of highest impact get missed because we're immediately rushing to the next thing, and there were points that as a reader, I wasn't sure of which story was being told. The book could comfortably have worked as a collection of short stories from each characters perspective, or as a much longer novel.
I also think the book could do with an external editor - there were a couple of jarring sentences which clearly had been rewritten but had an extra word or two left in.
This is a book like no other I've read. It's folk horror, yes, but also poetic - with all of the heartfelt emotion that entails.
From the first, I found it both engaging and challenging. It's clear things are going to go badly for our narrator from the start, but that doesn't lessen the impact of death, banishment, loss and love. The constant sense of 'otherworldliness' made it uncertain what would happen from one moment to the next, and it's difficult to build your hopes up only to have them quickly dashed against the rocks of a very dramatic story!
I went in pretty much blind and think that's the best way. Let the world of the book, its spirit and magic breath into you as it carries you along.
A unique and beautiful read.
I was kindly sent an early copy of this book by the publisher, but the above opinions are entirely my own.
A folkloric-fantasy tale set on the stormy Kernow coast, Dissonance of Bird Song tells the tale of Eseld, a song-weaver, and her sister, Nessa. Swirling in the sea Myst are Mystcran birds; their safe return believed to keep the people alive. Yet fewer birds return each time, and some are sick. Eseld wants to find the cause, and to cure her sister's ills.
Shrouded in haunting folklore and with vivid imagery of the beautiful yet savage Cornish coastline, this book explores the symbiotic, fragile relationship between humans and birds. It also grows into an expansive world with multiple layers and numerous characters, each with their own story and voice.
Alexandra Beaumont has woven together the threads of this mesmerising tale in such a way that it's impossible to stop reading once you start. The words cast their spell on you, much like the rugged coastline does.
"Dissonance of Bird Song" is a captivating narrative interweaving the delicate beauty of nature with the raw complexity of human emotion and the history of ancient Druid culture. Beaumont's lyrical prose brings to life a story that is as haunting as it is beautiful, making it a must-read for lovers of literary fiction, folklore and fantasy. The novel's pacing is balanced and engaging and I loved the multi-faceted characters, each with their own struggles and triumphs. The author has thoughtfully crafted a story that I feel will resonate deeply with a wide array of audiences. It's the perfect escape for anyone seeking a poignant and gorgeously written tale of love, loss, sacrifice and essentially the vitality of human soul.
The author does an amazing job of using folklore as the base for this book while building something entirely different. The world was crafted as the reader went on the journey with Eseld. We knew what she knew, giving the book the suspense and wonder it deserved.
Even though the druid isn’t in the book for any real length of time, he plays a pivotal role. He is easy to hate, yet Alexandra Beaumont gives his character such depth that by the end, the reader can see something that wasn’t there before.
Eseld changes throughout the story, but her main characteristic gets stronger – like her!
If you enjoy fantasy and folklore, this is an excellent book for you!
I found this book surprisingly entertaining and the story told in a pleasingly creative way. At the start, where Eseld is unjustly accused and imprisoned, I had misgivings that this might be a standard YA story with some dark elements, but it definitely picked up and kept forging ahead with a sea and island adventure. Eseld's struggles to save her sister (Nessa), the birds which bring her community magical Myst and also Meri, one of the sea people are engaging and full of magic.
I really thought the world very intring, the "myst", the conection with the birds and the seafolk. But the action is very slow, and was very difficult to understand the sacrifices of Eseld. I did understand her wish to save her people and her sister, but did not agreed that she choose to lost her freedoom to save Meri. Also the book could explain more how did start the disease.
Dissonance is an enthralling must-read for any lovers of coastal folklore, mythology and history. A superbly compelling fantasy tale of love, loss and sacrifice. Beaumont weaves a beautiful tapestry of folk song, the sounds of the sea, and a thrumming heartbeat of adventure to create a page-turning original read.
It's a truly beautiful book, the setting, a fantasy ancient and wild Cornish style coastland, atmosphere, the folklore, the whole story is exquisite, it's gentle, yet powerful, and you cannot help wanting the best outcome for the main character. I can't wait until the sequel is released.
