Alfred Edmeades "Fred" Bestall, MBE (died in Porthmadog, Wales), was the author and illustrator of Rupert Bear for the London Daily Express, from 1935 to 1965.

Bestall produced his last Rupert story on 22 July 1965. He retired from the Daily Express in July 1965, but continued creating Annual publication covers until 1973.

Bestall also drew illustrations for the Whitcombe's Story Book, a form of children's reader published in Australasia by Whitcombe & Tombs Ltd. These books were undated; but Bestall's work appears in the 500 numbers, possibly published in the 1950s.

Bestall died on 15 January 1986, aged 93, at Wern Manor Nursing Home in Porthmadog, Wales.[1] He is buried in plot 100 of Brookwood Cemetery.

That last story, Rupert and the Carved Stick took the cake. it was fabulously exciting, Rupert and his family are of on a picnic during the summer hols and they happen to pick a spot by the sea. There, a decrepit castle stands and Rupert and his pal can't help but explore it. That's when they find the Carved Stick with its secret message.

This was a charming selection of Rupert tales, they all were enjoyable from their full color pictures, magic paintings and paper experiments to the wild adventures Rupert and his friends.

The other fun tale in this Annual is Rupert and Floppity. Its got a dog who sniffs everyone out and even a sweet monkey. I bet Enid Blyton fans would like this.

I would have given this a four, but the last story was way too good to merely get four.

Absolute perfection. Pretty much everything you look for in a Rupert annual - all the usual variety of adventures and locations. I love the stories. I love the illustrations. I love the colours of the pictures. Great escapism for a winter's day. If only architects and town planners had Rupert's world in mind when they came up with with their designs, and strived to create something as simple and beautiful and satisfying.
