MANOLIS

Rate this book
This book about Manolis the fisherman, who first appears in YANNIS, relates what happened to him during the Second World War, when the Germans and Italians occupied Greece, and takes his story up to 1953. The events that Manolis and Vasilis are creditd to have participated in are based on various true incidents that occurred during the occupation of Crete 20th May 1941 to 11th October 1944. Manolis is contented with his life as a fisherman. His trips to Spinalonga, delivering supplies to the occupants, gives him the opportunity to fall in love and make some extra money. When the Germans invade Crete, Manolis is asked to take a message to a neighbouring village. A seemingly simple task. It results in him sailing half way around Crete in the company of an Englishman until they reach Preveli. Manolis finds himself inexorably caught up with the resistance. Cut off from news of their families the men finally return to their homes at the end of the war, one to happiness and the other to heartbreak. "YANNIS is my favourite book. I visit Elounda each year and read the book again when I return. I am so looking forward to MANOLIS." Gloria Hiscox "I just love these books" Linda Davies
