A great, informative, and insightful book, written in a very comprehensive and simple way. Complex terms and concepts were explained phenomenally, and the illustrations that accompanied certain chapters were fun. I won't deny that at certain moments the book becomes a bit of a drag to read, but if you're looking to learn more about climate, climate change, meteorology, marine biology, oceanography, etc., this is the book for you!

Cieszę się, że dostałam możliwość przeczytania tej książki. Dzięki niej odkryłam kilka rzeczy, w które świecie wierzyłam, że są naukowo potwierdzone… a okazały się bardzo popularnymi mitami 🫣 Winię za nie filmy z lat 90-tych 🤣
Wracają do książki. Jej autorzy od lat są związani ze światem nauki. Ellen jest oceanografką, zaś Dave meteorologiem. Na przestrzeni lat dostawali ciekawe, a czasami dziwne pytania. Zebrali je w jednym miejscu, by obalić trochę mitów!
Podoba mi się jak książka jest ułożona. Mamy kilka rozdziałów, które skupiają się na konkretnym kawałku wiedzy. W ramach tych rozdziałów jest kilka lub kilkanaście podrozdziałów w formie pytań i odpowiedzi. Język jest prosty i przystępny. Do tego autorzy wpletli przekazywaną wiedzę dużą dozę humoru. Ich wyjaśniano odnośnie syren do tej pory mnie bawi 😅
Jak wspomniałam, przeczytanie tej książki obaliło kilka mitów, w które nieświadomie wierzyłam. Jednym z nich było przekonanie, że na poparzenie meduzy należy na sikać 🫣 Jeśli też w to wierzycie, to szczerze odradzam 😆 Doprowadzi to tylko do większej ilości bólu!
Ponieważ autorzy są z USA to wielkie informacji odnosi się do rozwiązań stosowanych w Stanach. Dużym plusem są dodane przypisy od konsultanta merytorycznego dr. Kijewskiego. Dowiadujemy się z nich jak część informacji przekłada się na Polskę!
Innym mitem, w który długo wierzyłam: rekiny mogą wyczuć krople krwi w morzu. Wspominałam już, że winie filmu z lat 90-tych 😂 Oczywiście rekin nie jest w stanie wyczuć kropli krwi w morzu.
Dla osób, które poczują niedosyt wiedzy, autorzy stworzyli listę źródeł i dodatkowych informacji. Myślę, że dla wielu osób, książka może się okazać inspiracją do pogłębiania wiedzy!

Written by a marine scientist and a meteorologist, this is an interesting introduction to the ocean and the atmosphere. It answers questions about topics including the sea, sea creatures, coral reefs, the supernatural (or is it?), lightning, hurricanes, weather forecasting, extreme events, climate change and the sun.
I love fun facts and there are plenty here.
You’re more likely to be killed by a toaster than by a shark.
The only whale with an esophagus big enough to swallow a human adult is the sperm whale but they “dive thousands of feet to catch prey” so you’re very, very unlikely to be on the menu, even accidentally.
Starfish aren’t called starfish anymore! They’re known as sea stars now.
When I was a kid, I was always on the lookout for books like this for school project research but it was too advanced for kid me. Adult me wavered between Didn’t I learn this at school? and That’s really interesting. I should have studied science after it became an elective at school. It probably would have been just right for teenage me but they would’ve thought it looked too much like homework.

As sunlight enters the ocean, short-waved light like green and blue penetrate deeper. Long-waved red light is absorbed more quickly. So, below about sixty feet, without artificial light, everything appears blue-green.… This includes blood.

April 9, 2025Książka to zbiór ciekawostek z dziedzin oceanografii i meteorologii. Pierwsza część poświęcona jest pasji i pracy Ellen - czyli wodom i oceanom, druga zaś dotyczy atmosfery i zjawisk meteorologicznych.
Całość czyta się bardzo płynnie. Pytania są ciekawe (np. jak ośmiornica zmienia kolor, czym jest czarny lód, czy orki naprawdę zabijają ludzi, czy jest już za późno na zatrzymanie zmian klimatycznych). Odpowiedzi są konkretne, treściwe i przede wszystkim zrozumiałe.
Podnoszone tematy są splotem dość powszechnych pytań jak i tych mniej znanych publicznie. Książka zawiera też ilustracje, które fajnie dopełniają niektóre kwestie. Dla mnie zdecydowanym faworytem jeśli chodzi o zalety tej propozycji jest humor. Zarówno jeśli chodzi o sposób konstruowania odpowiedzi jak i komiksowe uzupełnienia.
Książka jest przeznaczona dla czytelników w każdym wieku, można czytać ją od deski do deski lub wybranymi tematami. Zdecydowanie fajna pozycja.

Where do I even begin? I went into this blind and got this as an ARC..and I am left...speechless. The time and energy alone that was put into this book is incredible. The resources at the back could be its own book! This book touched on something that scares me and something that I absolutely love...the ocean and space! You will learn about ocean life, why the coral reefs are dying and what we can do to help, the difference between weather vs. climate, but in language that is easy to understand. Weather related events and what to do in an emergency. Explaining climate change in relatable ways is so important, and then they talked about the sun, moon, and eclipses, oh my! As a middle school science teacher this book spoke to my soul, and as a human living on Earth...it did the same. No thing is too small to help battle climate change...the easiest thing to do to help? It's free...vote!

This is 5 ⭐ review for its intended audience - curious science teens.
The writing and images are fun and YA appropriate but still very, very scientific. As someone who doesn't have a strong science brain I found some of the parts about climate a little confusing but I really think that's a me-problem. I would say that this book takes young people seriously while still having fun with science.
I read sections of this to my fifth grader who enjoyed it but I think it's intended for a little bit of an older audience. I would highly recommend this for upper middle through high school. Perfect for a STEM kid who's maybe a reluctant reader.
Thank you Net Galley and Columbia Press for teaching me the difference between hale and sleet and why mermaids cannot exist!

This was a very good book to dive into some of the more incredulous questions about dinosaurs, mermaids and megalodons; while also providing the necessary gravitas around climate change and detailing the difference from global warming.
One element that does concern me is actually the title. The final chapter in the book talks about misinformation and the more click bait titles newspapers and online resources use. The addition of “mermaids” to the title could be misleading for those readers who don’t bother to read the entirety of the book.

This book was really fun. I got very invested in clouds somehow. I have never been a cloud person, but now I want to know more.
Not enough Mola Mola, but I am so excited about the whole chapter of jellyfish (this is mildly a joke, the publisher sent me this book, because I complained about a lack of sharks in another book. So I am begging for the sequel!).

Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for letting me review this book. This is the perfect book for those kids and adults who question everything and why things are the way they are. There were some interesting questions as well. Don’t believe everything on the internet; make sure you have the facts to back it up.

I expected more in depth information from this book, but found it very shallow and most of the chapters included information that is already pretty widely known at this point. So it really doesn’t offer much in terms of novelty.

Od czasu do czasu lubię sięgnąć po coś, co oprócz rozrywki zapewni mi również intelektualną ucztę. Ta książka okazała się idealnym balansem między tymi dwoma elementami – to naprawdę świetna pozycja, która w lekki sposób przekazuje wartościową wiedzę. Autorzy z sympatią i humorem odpowiadają na pytania z różnych dziedzin nauki, zaczynając od oceanów, a kończąc na zmianach klimatycznych. Przekazują nam wiedzę na temat zjawisk, z którymi stykamy się na co dzień, takich jak powstawanie gradu, ciekawostki o burzach i wiele innych.
Podczas lektury byłam ogromnie zaciekawiona i cieszyłam się, odkrywając nowe informacje, którymi mogłam dzielić się dalej. Oczywiście, nie wszystkie zagadnienia były dla mnie równie interesujące, ale w ogólnym rozrachunku dowiedziałam się naprawdę sporo i bawiłam się wyśmienicie.

I absolutely loved this book! It is great non-fiction, environmental science Q&A-styled writing for young adult readers, or possibly even younger if they're reading along with an adult. Personally I felt that some of the environmental themes were a bit heavy for very young readers to tackle on their own, but each section is written factually, candidly, and with a lot of humour and poise keeping readers of all ages in mind. I am fairly certain most of the questions posed came from kids or young adults, but I honestly know quite a few adults that could also learn a thing or two (or several) from this book. The authors have also included all their reference sources so there's lot of extra materials you can find and delve into for further research on any topic, if desired.
I'm definitely grabbing a copy to gift to my nephew for when he starts reading on his own; he's already obsessed with weather phenomena so this book will be right up his alley!

Ellen and Dave make it look easy…
…but it’s not.
Talking about Science with Muggles is not easy. Talking about science with Muggles without making them (me) feel stupid is a superpower.
I’m looking forward to seeing whether they go cape or no-cape for book signings—because they are absolutely science super heroes.
This will be my main Christmas present this year (thanks y’all for making the season easy for me!)—for kids AND adults!
