The first thing that the prospective reader needs to know about this book is that it is U.S.-centric in its discussion of retirement planning. The retirement accounts discussed in the book are those you would find the United States, such as the 401k an the IRA.
Next, my comments must be prefaced by the admission that I come to this review as someone who has already done a considerable amount of reading on the subject. As such, I’ve developed my own opinions on nearly every topic in the book and could easily fill my review with a list of what I thought should have been done differently but I will reserve such comments to the topic of compound interest, which I think should have been presented in the first few chapters.
Otherwise, it is important for prospective readers to know that the book is mostly informative, offering little in the way of qualitative judgment of one option over another. This means that readers will likely want to do further research on each topic afterwards to find out more information, such as which type of asset goes best in which type of retirement account to avoid taxes, and other topics. Consider this book to be an introduction to terms and topics after which further research will be necessary.
That said, I consider the informative nature of the book to be a strength, not a weakness. The book provides a comprehensive list of topics to consider during retirement, both financial and otherwise. A reader who uses this list and makes notes and research on each topic will likely craft a retirement plan that is right for that person. I still found some new topics to consider from this book that I did not think about before.
Given the events of the past few years in the U.S. (and worldwide), it also bears mentioning that the section on protecting investments from inflation appears mid-way through chapter 11, which is about adjusting to a new identity in a life without work in retirement. The discussion of inflation protection is tucked out of the way and would be easy to miss unless you’re paying attention. This is a pity since this information deserves its own chapter, especially after the last few years.
In summary, this is a fine introduction to retirement planning for anyone but it is by no means the last book on the subject.
