BOOK REVIEW- Ballyhoo by Caroline is a gripping romantic coastal crime thriller set against the stunning backdrop of Sarasota and the Gulf of Mexico. The novel expertly combines the allure of a sun-soaked paradise with the high-octane tension of a Miami Vice-style narrative.

The story follows an undercover agent who reunites with his high school sweetheart, Rachel, now a stable cardiac nurse and new mother. Their rekindled romance takes a dramatic turn when he draws her into Operation Lexi, a high-stakes mission against drug cartels and their American accomplices. Rachel’s initial hesitation gives way to a compelling partnership as she becomes an integral part of the operation.

The novel’s strength lies in its blend of romance and suspense. The chemistry between the protagonists is palpable, yet their relationship is tested by deep-seated secrets, betrayal, and the ever-present threat of danger. As they navigate ruthless adversaries and face perilous situations on the high seas, the tension is heightened by the impending hurricane, adding a layer of urgency and chaos to their mission.

Set amidst the vibrant scenery of Sarasota, Ballyhoo offers readers a thrilling escape, merging beautiful coastal imagery with the grit of a crime thriller. Author delivers a captivating story of love, danger, and redemption, making this novel a standout in the genre and a must-read for fans of romantic thrillers and high-stakes drama.

With a mastery of language, the author skillfully navigates the nuances of expression, effortlessly painting vivid landscapes and breathing life into characters. The prose is not merely a conveyance of the plot but a symphony of words, where each sentence is meticulously crafted to resonate with emotion and depth. The author's unique voice shines through, creating a distinctive signature that leaves an indelible mark on the reader's consciousness.

Highly recommended book to my readers 📚✨️

Book was horribly written and the characters were unbelievable. If you want no spoilers then stop reading now.

************************************ spoilers ahead

I have to agree with Christine, who also gave it 1 star, on a lot of the issues. I also received this book from the goodreeds sweepstakes, so did not pay for it.

The book was written so badly and jumped around all over the place while throwing in new characters only to give them like a paragraph before abandoning them into the void never to be heard from again. To me it read like 3 5yr olds who went to the zoo and when you asked them about the trip they all tell you everything at once and constantly throw in things out of content.

Girl buys some speed to help her study and collapses right after taking it because it is laced with fentanyl. Good start and I was looking forward to reading it, after that the book went down hill.

A woman meets up with an old friend from school and thinks he looks creepy and maybe a little sketchy with his long hair but decides to go upstairs and have a private dinner alone with him. He excuses himself after a brief phone call and meets up with an even scarier looking person who the woman think is is evil. Does she take this time to run for her life no she sticks around and when told the guy is an undercover agent and is trying to take down the cartel she agrees on the spot to help him and go undercover also. She is told she will need to spend 6 weeks on the sting alone with this guy in the middle of the Gulf of Mexico on a sailboat while stashing her nephew, who she just got custody of after her sister died of Cancer, with a neighbor. She doesn't even think about it because his coming is so new that half the time she forgets he is even there.

Kids in this story are treated like possessions that the adults just leave for no reason Nephew seems to be ok about being abandoned by his Aunt/Mom after his parents die and is probably still processing their deaths, but that is ok because the kid he is staying with is cool. A fisherman's son and a unknown girl that arrives in a boat with the bad guys, who are killed, are just left with the main characters for days because hey they must be ok because they killed 2 guys that were suppose to be bad guys.

These are just a couple of things that are wrong with this book. Maybe just not my cup of tea, but I found it unbelievable and very hard to read.

I really, really hate to give books bad reviews. And I especially hate to do it when I've won them in a Goodreads Giveaway, and know the author is giving away copies of the book to try and get it out there and create some buzz. But, I honestly can't bring myself to give this more than 1 star.

The premise of the book seemed promising. An undercover agent and his love interest go on a mission in the Gulf of Mexico to find the drugs and money they cartels have hidden on abandoned oil rigs. The book just never delivers in so many ways.

First, the story is totally unrealistic. This nurse "likes" an IG post of this agent that she has seen in years, and he suddenly recruits her to go on the undercover mission with him??? And she agrees to go on a sailboat in the middle of the Gulf with him for 6 weeks, leaving behind her nephew that she just adopted after her sister died, and her full-time nursing job??? Then these random characters pop in and out. There is no cohesion to the story. It's just not good..

And then there is the writing. The dialogue is so awkwardly written. No one talks the way these people do. It's very formal and almost robotic. I actually thought at one point I had missed something, and the characters were not native English speakers and the author was having them sound like English was not their first language. But the narrative language was written the same. And it was just bizarre at times. There was even a recipe for jerk chicken just kind of randomly thrown in for no reason.

Again, I hate to give bad reviews because I am sure the author put her heart and soul in this book. There are only a few other reviews of it and they all gave the book five stars, so I honestly thought I was being punk'd somehow. But when I looked at the other reviewers, they have literally given every book they have "reviewed" five stars, so draw from that what you will. I personally had a hard time finishing this and can't recommend it at all.

I received an advance review copy for free and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I was given this book in a giveaway for an honest review… so here we go.

I do not like to give any book a one star review, I recognize that this is someone’s work and appreciate the time they took to tell their story, but there are several five star reviews that are either purchased or put there by people that didn’t really read the book.

To start off, this feels like a first draft. Just reading this on Kindle, the spacing varies from double spaced to .5 spaced for no apparent reason. It makes it difficult to read smoothly. If anyone read through this and gave some feedback, there’d be some improvements. The dialogue was weird and not natural at all. This book should have taken two days max to read, but the spacing and awkward dialogue made it take 11 days to read. This is not a complex read and at no point did it really feel like the story took off.

The story itself had potential. Ignoring the weird MAGA coded content, it could have been a fun adventure book. As a person that typically reads for vibes, even I couldn’t believe parts of the story. Rachel likes an Instagram post and then ends up undercover for six weeks without any contact with whoever they were supposed to be working with until they go to the random ball the day the job starts. I was waiting to find out that she ended up working for the cartel or something. Then Rachel and Seth randomly disappear for three chapters and we are focusing on “he”, but I don’t know who that “he” is. The children in this book were a weird addition. Rachel’s nephew recently lost both of his parents and then she’s going to take off for six weeks. That’s really cool…NOT! Chapter 39 made absolutely no sense. What was that person even talking about??

I really hated this book and I’m so happy that I am done with it.

Book Review: Ballyhoo by Caroline Clemens 😍😍📚📚

Rating:5/5

Review:

👉Ballyhoo by Caroline Clemens is a masterful blend of romance, suspense, and action, set against the picturesque backdrop of Sarasota and the Gulf of Mexico. This captivating coastal crime thriller brings the intensity of a Miami Vice-style mission to life, as an undercover agent rekindles his love with Rachel, his high school sweetheart, and pulls her into a dangerous operation against ruthless drug cartels.

👉Rachel, a steady cardiac nurse and new mother, is initially reluctant to join Operation Lexi, but her curiosity and the undeniable chemistry with her old flame draw her into the mission. What starts as a reconnection of past romance quickly transforms into a thrilling and dangerous adventure. Together, they must face not only deadly adversaries but also the looming threat of an impending hurricane that adds chaos to their already high-stakes mission. 🌊🌪️

👉The beauty of Ballyhoo lies in Clemens' ability to weave together romance and tension seamlessly. The relationship between the two protagonists is not only filled with passion but also layered with secrets and betrayal. As their mission intensifies, so do the emotional stakes—making every twist and turn feel personal and gripping. Their partnership is tested not only by the physical dangers they face but by the emotional weight of their past and the secrets they've yet to reveal.

👉What sets Ballyhoo apart from other thrillers is its vivid setting. Clemens transports readers to the serene, sun-drenched shores of Sarasota, only to contrast this paradise with the violence and danger lurking beneath the surface. Her descriptive prose beautifully captures the charm and peril of the coastal environment, immersing the reader in the world of sandy beaches, Gulf waters, and hurricane winds. The tension builds with every chapter as the storm approaches, amplifying the stakes both emotionally and physically. 🌴🌊

👉Rachel is an especially compelling character. Her transformation from a cautious, grounded nurse to an integral part of a high-risk mission is handled with care and depth.

Happy reading 😁😁

In Ballyhoo, Caroline Clemens whisks readers away to the sun-drenched Gulf of Mexico, where the serenity of coastal paradise meets the gritty underworld of crime. From the very first page, I was hooked, not just by the intricately woven plot but by the palpable tension between its two protagonists, Rachel and Seth. As someone who enjoys stories with a rich blend of romance and suspense, I found this novel a masterclass in balancing heart-pounding action with moments of tender vulnerability.

Rachel, a cardiac nurse and new mother, reminded me of the many strong, resilient women I’ve encountered in my life. Her initial hesitation to join Seth on this perilous mission felt deeply relatable. She is torn between the stability she’s built and the undeniable pull of their shared past. This internal conflict resonated with me, as it mirrored moments in my own life where I’ve had to choose between comfort and confronting the unknown. Seth, with his complex past and unyielding resolve, adds layers of intrigue. Their dynamic is raw and authentic, and it’s refreshing to see a romance where both partners complement and challenge each other in equal measure.

Caroline Clemens doesn’t just write a story; she crafts an experience. The vivid descriptions of Sarasota’s coastline and the relentless tension of life undercover brought the narrative to life. What truly stood out, though, was her ability to humanize every character, even those on the wrong side of the law. Valeria Dave, the antagonist, is not a one-dimensional villain but a man with a shadowy past and enigmatic charm. This complexity reminded me that even in fiction, people are rarely just good or evil—they’re a mixture of both, shaped by circumstances.

For readers who enjoy stories that mix action with deeply emotional character arcs, Ballyhoo is a must-read. Clemens’ prose is evocative, her characters compelling, and the stakes could not be higher. I’d recommend this book not only to fans of romantic thrillers but to anyone who appreciates a narrative that lingers in the mind long after the last page.

Get ready for a *steamy* coastal crime thriller! *Ballyhoo* is a wild mix of romance, danger, and undercover action.

Rachel, a cardiac nurse turned mom, reconnects with her ex, Seth—who just happens to be a former CIA agent. Together, they dive headfirst into a mission to take down drug cartels in the Gulf of Mexico, and things heat up quickly—both in their mission and their chemistry!

This book is *packed* with great characters! Rachel and Seth’s spark is undeniable, and the drama with shady characters like Valeria Dave adds even more edge. The sun-soaked Sarasota setting might be chill, but the stakes are *high* as Operation Lexi unfolds, dragging you into a dark world of danger and betrayal.

The tropical setting? Perfection. It’s the ideal mix of vacation vibes with some seriously intense crime drama lurking underneath. And the hurricane tease for the next book? Oh yeah, I’m hooked!

There’s a bit of downtime with the technical stuff, but it doesn’t slow the story too much. If you’re into crime thrillers with a dash of romance and a ton of suspense, *Ballyhoo* needs to be on your list!

Interesting Florida Story

Interesting story, but got a bid confused with some of the characters. I liked that it was about an area I'm familiar with & the good that came from what they were doing.
