S. Bolanos

S Bolanos (she/they) is a genderqueer author of queer contemporary & paranormal romance who mixes heart, sass, and just enough trauma to make the HEA hit hard.

They enjoy crafting romances full of queer joy, messy emotions, and kisses worth writing about. One of their favorite things to do as a writer is subverting expected character archetypes and creating worlds readers want to get lost in.

Most of their stories are MM pairings, offer medium to high angst—especially on the paranormal side—all the feels, and plenty of spice.

'Our Epic Spring’ is the third installment in the beloved Ulwich Preparatory Academy series, and it brings back some well-established characters from the previous books. This continuation is a must-read for fans who have been eagerly waiting to see what happens next in the lives of Andy, Mitch, and their friends.

This book takes readers through a rollercoaster of emotions, from the good times to the bad times, and everything in between. The story is rich with angst, just the right amount of heat, and some rather disturbing incidents involving sexual assault. While these incidents are more referenced than described in gory detail, readers need to be aware of the content warnings before diving in.

One of the highlights of ‘Our Epic Spring’ is the development of the characters, particularly Andy and Mitch. In this book, they finally get their act together and move towards their happy ever after. The growth and evolution of these characters are beautifully portrayed, making the readers root for them every step of the way.

If you’ve enjoyed the first two books in the Ulwich Preparatory Academy series, ‘Our Epic Spring’ is a continuation that you won’t want to miss. It’s a captivating read that brings closure to some storylines while opening the door to new possibilities. It is a good read even if you haven’t read the others but you will probably wish you had when you see how great it is. Be sure to pick up a copy and immerse yourself in this epic tale.

4.5⭐️
This was pretty lovely, the writing is skilled and loaded with emotion. It is also quite filled with angst before Andy and Mitch get to their happy ending. I liked that these characters are still young and the author writes them and allows them to behave in a way that makes them feel realistic. Mitch is determined to repair his relationship with Andy, but it’s not going well as Andy fears letting Mitch in and getting hurt and disappointed again. They communicate infrequently and badly, which is definitely frustrating but did feel authentic considering how young they both are. There is a lot of hostility, pain, and trauma happening at Ulwich Prep, which is at the center of much of the darker parts of the plot. Calvin’s story is terribly painful and especially rage inducing - the result the apathy and hostility the school has fostered for a long time. It’s sad and hard to read but beautifully and carefully written. I loved seeing Andy and Mitch start to make inroads to reconciliation, see them learn how to trust each other again. They are very easy to root for, so I loved that Mitch and Andy do get the lovely HEA they deserve. Great writing, and I loved the characters.

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.

This is the third book in the Ulwich Prep Academy and what an emotional story about friendships, heartache, personal growth and finding the one. It also deals with some really difficult issues so I would recommend reading the trigger warning if you have any before reading.
The main characters are lacrosse star player aspiring writer Andy. They have had an on/off thing going on for years but having to keep it secret as homophobia is still rife at the old fashioned Academy. They are both in love with each other but they both are keeping secrets from each other. When a disturbing former student returns to the school and lacrosse team they are all having to be vigilant and it forces Andy and Mitch to be honest with each other. It was really a beautiful and well written story. I'm looking forward to the next story.

I don't read much college/high school/prep school stories, by choice. They're too angsty. The cynic in me wonders if they'll still be together... five years... ten years. S. Bolanos hasn't made me a convert. But I actually enjoyed this story.
Mitch and Andy are sweet angsty. Best friends to sort of enemies to lovers. Okay. Their school is absolutely awful, thankfully they survive that. The author warning should NOT be ignored. There are some staunch supporters. And there's a HEA... five months out. Good worldbuilding. Interesting main characters and good secondaries.
A good, quick read. Maybe look for more.
I received an advance copy of this book and this is my review.

Our Epic Spring is a pretty good story. First off, Lacrosse players are super hot. So are nerds. :-) There are some pretty steamy scenes, and the author doesn't make you want for them. The author does a good job of keeping you guessing if these two will ever get their stuff together so they can learn why they're not together and then reconcile. S Bolanos also throws in a tragic rape story of one of the supporting characters. Although a bit sad, it solidifies the love of our nerd and his friends.

Mitch and Andy have been best friends for a long time, but had a falling out. They reconnected, but there's so much miscommunication and avoidance keeping them apart. The school they go to is 1000% toxic, but luckily have some good allies. Sadly, bad things still happen, but everyone perseveres. I would have liked some more with Benny and Calvin, but like real life, things don't always work out that way. This was a pretty quick read and I didn't want to put it down.

I really loved this couple. They have so much going for them but things are going so bad. It sucks you in and doesn't let you go. I received an ARC of this book and I am voluntarily leaving a review.

I'm sorry, this just didn't work for me. Way too much angst and lack of communication.

The Academy of Nightmares

I’ve enjoyed a few of S. Bolanos’s books but none prepared me for this series set In Ulwich Prep Academy. There are 3 books in the series so far.

Anderson (Andy) Gallagher is a nerdy guy who has aspirations of becoming a writer at a top newspaper when he graduates from college. He has been best friends with Mitchum Hudson (Mitch) who is a star player on the Academy’s Lacrosse Team. Everything was fine between them until Andy kissed Mitchum and told him he was gay. Something happened and Mitchum ran away from him. In the absence of Mitchum, Andy is consoled and looked out for by his friend and roommate, Calvin Bridges, who would do anything for Andy, Calvin is out and proud.

Years later Mitch is trying to get Andy to talk to him and explain what happened but Andy, despite his feelings for Mitch, won’t let him in again. Mitch doesn’t give up, and it seems that Andy changes his mind and attitude every time Mitch approaches him and they end up disappearing to one of the many secret hideaways within the Campus at Ulwich Prep. The next time they meet he ignores Mitch and walks away and minutes later he is sorry for hurting Mitch. After several incidents like that I was not liking Andy very much. Then he offers to be Mitch’s Tutor to help him keep up his grades so he can get a Scholarship to the same college as Andy, in Chicago, but Mitch is keeping that part secret for the moment.

Mitch, with Calvin’s help gets to go on a prestigious school trip for a week to DC where he plans to tell Andy the whole story of what happened with him 4 years ago. Despite his initial reaction, Andy relents and they have the hottest time in DC but when it comes to explaining, something or someone always interrupts and nothing is sorted even when they return.

Ulwich Prep Academy is a breeding ground of homophobia among staff and students. Students can’t relax or show any tolerance towards ‘others’. There are bullies about that can sniff out anyone’s differences or weakness. When an ex student, Warren Singleton, returns everyone is astounded, especially Calvin Bridges. Everyone has been warned about Warren and his reputation as a Master Bully.
Somehow Andy becomes the focus of his attention and things escalate. Surprisingly Andy’s is not the body that is found battered and bruised.

Mitch, Connor (Andy’s ex) and Benny (Calvin’s crush) and others students with the help of Mentoring Professors, Garza and Cohen, a plan is devised mostly with Andy’s expertise, to have a showdown with the Authorities regarding the faculty of Ulwich Academy when they try to hide what happened.

I was so happy when I saw so many banding together to make changes happen at UPA, much to the relief of most of the students who had suffered in silence. I could sense the relief as if everyone started to breathe again. Everyone else awaits the fallout, which results in heartache for someone and Mitch is primed to play the game of his life in the Championship Match to secure his Scholarship place at University

This wasn’t an easy read for me, it was a really slow takeoff before I got into it, basically due to the too-ing and fro-ing of Andy. However, after several Chapters the story began to involve more side characters, some of Mitch’s teammates and more secrets are revealed.

The author recommends reading these books in order to get the full picture and I agree.

It was a relief to know that a major loose thread resulting from the showdown in this book, is getting the next book in the series. I’m so waiting to get hold of ‘The Promise’. Plus catching up with the major characters in ‘Our Epic Spring’.

Serious TW’s- 2 incidents of sexual assault off page, involving major side character but results of injuries described, plus major homophobic atmosphere. READ authors warnings at start.

I received a free ARC copy from the author via BookFunnel and this is my unbiased review.

Our Epic Spring by S Bolanos is about Mitch and Andy who were best friends but had a falling out. Finally back at school Mitch has made it his mission to fix what he had broken when he realizes he lost a lot of ground during break. Andy, trying to protect his heart from being destroyed, won’t give Mitch the time of day even though it’s hurting him more. When Calvin intercedes on Mitch's behalf things are looking up but with the homophobia and threats at the school Andy and Mitch will have to tell each other their secrets before they can protect their relationship and themselves. I really loved this story and the characters were just so lovable and exasperating where you want to yell at them to talk to one another but that was what made them all so wonderful and complex. I could not put this book down. It was so wonderfully written and easy to get lost in the story as you are rooting for Mitch and Andy.
