Will Kaufman may have saved the galaxy. He also may have destroyed Earth.
The Imperium grip is slipping, thanks to Will's unexpected ability as a Void Drifter. But in revealing his abilities, Will may have put his home planet, a backwater most the galaxy didn't even know existed, on the frontlines.
But Earth is not as defenseless as it seems. An enigmatic billionaire, aware of the true nature of the Imperium's galactic menace, has been secretly building a defensive fleet. Still more fleets have been secretly constructed in the far reaches of the galaxy.
It's up to Will and the crew of Phaelon to convince disjointed rebels, corporate criminal syndicates, and his fellow humans that the time to stand against a bloodied but angry empire is now.
Even with the courage of an Astradian, the brains of a Foris and Drayth, and the brute strength of a Vorvak… they will need help.
The crew must awaken Benegal, a dangerous terrorist still in cryosleep aboard the Phaelon. But how willing can the prisoner be to help the very people who captured him, even after four thousand years?
The survival of humanity is on the line and Will Kaufman is too stubborn and determined to let things go any other way than victory…
Enjoyable, but I didn't love this one as much as the first Void Drifter. It does expand the universe a fair bit, adding a lot more context to the rebels-vs-empire conflict, the action is great, and it continues the first book's "Saturday morning cartoon" vibe very effectively (albeit with more violence than a cartoon would have). Sert is as awesome as ever.
That said, everything here feels a bit more rushed and clunky. Problems are solved a bit too easily, some character decisions didn't quite make sense to me (particularly a major one made during the action of the finale), and the main character Will forms friendships more effectively than it feels like he should. There's a particular romance that comes across as half-hearted and not quite earned. The writing also has a fair number of grammatical errors, some of which actually make the prose more confusing to read. I respect the talent of the authors involved, and I understand that they're trying to keep up with the rapid release schedule that the self-pub market seems to expect, but I do feel like this book could have benefited from a bit more revision.
Not sure when I'll get to book 3, but this is a solid go-to series for simple, fun sci-fi, so I expect I will eventually.
A band of interspecies renegades formed by necessity, attempt to save the Earth from destruction and fix their universe. Can these former enemies work together? We have our usual beautiful heroine and our hero, and alien comrades and unbelievable tech. An good read with plenty of action.
I'm amazed that this author can write so many fantastic novels, I hope that he never stops writing. His books are some of the best Entertainment I have read and worth the time to read them. Thank you for a very fun entertaining read. What a fun book.
Don't think I've ever seen anyone join up with so many other authors as Chaney. Not a complaint, mind you. Merely an observation. After all, if I were complaining I wouldn't be reading so many of them. Pretty good stuff!
