The Guest Editor is the highly distinguished Ukrainian-American novelist, short-story writer and poet Askold Melnyczuk (the Founder and Editor for over 30 years of the celebrated journal Agni), who lives in Massachusetts. A great deal of translation is involved, including by distinguished poets and translators whose first language is English.

Since it’s been going on forever, War in Europe is not limited to the current war in Ukraine, though this is the prime focus. There is also relevant writing about the violent twentieth-century history of Ireland and of the Balkans, as well as the on Second World War. As with every issue, there is a “Portfolio” of images – this time exclusively on the war in Ukraine.

About the author

American writer whose publications include novels, essays, poems, memoir, and translations. Among his works are the novels What Is Told, Ambassador of the Dead, House of Widows and Excerpt from Smedley's Secret Guide to World Literature. His work has been translated into German, Polish, Russian, and Ukrainian. Melnyczuk also founded the journal AGNI (magazine) and Arrowsmith Press (2006).

A masterfully edited anthology of contemporary Ukrainian writers alongside essays, poetry, and other pieces on Ukraine from Irish, US-American, and Hungarian writers, much of it in translations.
