I remember reading this book as a kid and didn't really get some of the themes. But when I read it again when I was older I realized how dark it is (for a children's book, that is) and how the moral lessons are gracefully executed.
I really liked this book. On the first page is a poem that I didn't get until the end of the book. Each story is symbolic and has a deeper meaning. It's a quick read maybe a half hour to an hour.
This was one of my favorite books as a child. I’m pretty sure I checked it out of the library in the 4th grade every week. I think about some of the short stories SO often and thought for awhile I may have just imagined them. I finally tracked it down and had so much fun reading the collection again. I think it holds up and I didn’t notice how dark it was when I was younger (stories are about mental illness, divorce, homelessness, etc) which are themes I didn’t really pick up on in elementary school.
I have been looking for this for years!! This book felt like a fever dream, I thought I imagined it's existence, but I finally found it! I read this when I was 12 and I couldn't stop talking about it. Even now at 22 where I can't recall it's contents, I am so glad to have rediscovered it!!
I remember liking this when I read it way back when I was about thirteen. I don't think it is the best written book in the world and it is definitely middle grade in theme and execution, but good short stories. I just had a weird book flash back sitting in a barber shop the other day and I wasn't sure if it was a book I had dreamed about or if it actually existed. It actually existed so that's good.
I first read this in 2003ish, got rid of it sometime after, and have spent the last 13 or so years sporadically trying to remember what this book was, only to find it without looking last week.
The stories are not a weird as I remembered them being, but I also imagine so much went over my head at age 9.
