This is one of the funniest plays I have ever read, and I hope to one day see this performed. I was incredibly nervous to try this out given the heavy religious overtone, but it was handled perfectly. It is essentially a modern re-telling of mary and joseph, where a woman finds she is pregnant, and is visited by a number of people all claiming to know who the father is (including an angel, an ex, and the devil). Hilarity ensues.
The conversations give incredibly practical takes on the old biblical tales, providing some interesting commentary. My favourite of these was when she's being told that god is the father, and she talks about not being asked about whether she wanted a baby, where the money would come from to pay for it, etc.
I would highly recommend this for a drama group of any level.
I remember reading this play when I was a teenager and thinking that it was one of the greatest plays I had ever read. I never seemed to be in a position to buy it and was delighted when my fiancée bought it for me for Christmas.
Reading this play again as an adult I can remember all of the things I loved about it as a teenager but I did find myself noticing problems within the play now that I am an adult with theatre experience.
There was an awful lot of lines that were just far too random. I would have found them hilarious at 15 when any mention of the word penis would have sent me in to a fit of giggles but as an adult it really did come across as slightly lazy writing.
It really did feel too, that the writer did not know how to end his play. The play had this big build up with people fighting left right and centre only for a cop out answer to be given.
I also found that (and I will dance around this description because of spoilers) when Mia was given genuine proof of who was the father, she continued entertaining the idea it was someone else. Which to be honest just seemed like it was ignored by the writer so he could squeeze a few more pages in.
With that being said. I really do think that this play has some hilarious moments. It's views on religion hit deep to those who question it. It really does have an interesting plot to it and would be a fun night at the theatre.
As a read to pass the time, I'd say go for it. Local drama production with a young adult cast, go for it. Trying to stage a masterpiece that will make everyone love and respect you whilst also blowing people's minds and changing their theatre experience, maybe give this a skip.
*4.5 ⭐ Another play I had to read for a monologue and honestly I really enjoyed this one, it's great, and I really liked the theme and how it was executed. The plot twist at the end was also really amazing.
Had to read for a Lucifer monologue I'm doing, it was enjoyable enough but I wasn't extremely keen on the style. I reckon it might come across funnier on stage, as I definitely enjoy performing as Lucifer, but some jokes just didn't land while reading
I was a bit skeptical going into this play about it's ability to make me laugh, but I found myself giggling the whole way through. Loved the banter between characters too.
I read this with a view to possibly auditioning for it. I thought it was interesting and mildly amusing, but the ending was a bit of a cop-out and the whole wasn't really up to much.
