The Demon Queen Trials #1

City of Thorns - Gesamtausgabe

Rate this book
I never thought I'd be singing happy birthday to myself in a dungeon. And yet when a sinfully sexy demon crashes happy hour, that's exactly what happens. He’s known as the Lord of Chaos, and he’s mistaken me for my succubus doppelgänger.

Happy birthday to me.

When he tastes my blood, he finally understands I’m mortal. And I realize we have something in common: we both crave revenge. So we make a deal: I can stay in the forbidden city to hunt for my mom's killer. In return, I’ll help him get the vengeance he craves. I just have to pose as a sexy succubus. One problem--he's my number one suspect.

And that’s increasingly hard to remember as he teaches me my role: seduction. With each heated touch I drift further into peril. And if I fall under his seductive spell, death awaits me.

im happily surprised by how much i enjoyed this. i havent had much luck with CNCs books in the past, so im glad one finally worked out.

fans of ‘rhapsodic’ and ‘from blood and ash’ will really enjoy this one. its has all the workings of a fun paranormal story. theres a mortal girl in the world of demons, a mysterious demon prince who hates literally everyone except develops a soft spot for the main character, secret identities, fake dating, murder investigations and revenge plots. theres a lot packed into such a short book.

my only complaint would be i didnt connect to the MC as much as i wanted to. i honestly felt rowan was a bit juvenile and her thoughts to be borderline whiny. but i never found myself actively disliking her, i just found her annoying at times. buuuut some revelations are made at the end of this that have me very interested in where her storyline is going.

all in all, a great book to pick up if you have a paranormal itch that needs to be scratched.

City of Thorns is the first book to the Demon Queen Trial series, following Rowan, an indebted college student whose mother was killed by a Lightbringer. Governed by the will to avenge her dead mother, Rowan took the opportunity to stay at the City of Thorns when she crossed paths with the infamous Lord of Chaos, who had mistaken her as the powerful succubus, Mortana.

I've never found a recommendation so fitting because yes, if you're a fan of Rhapsodic, this book might be the one you're looking for. Marked as a paranormal romance, City of Thorns holds a candle with the gods mixed with demons thrown in an urban setting take. It's very fast-paced, filled with action, mystery, and romance to make readers revel in despite it being very teen-ish.

The most interesting part of the book would be the time when Rowan has to pretend to be Mortana to discover King Cambriel's weakness; which was part of her deal with Orion. I love how she was feigning the impersonation of someone who is the total opposite of herself. Mortana is confident, wicked, and stunning; different from Rowan who is awkward, timid, and geeky. If you look on a different side, you'll see both the MCs weren't given much depth, and Rowan's character is not really an uncharted territory. You might find her common as any other YA heroines, but I still think it's sufficient given that this is only the first installment.

However, there were a few things that unnerved me, and that starts with the superfluous explanation of psychological theories where it feels like reading my textbook again. Which trust me, is something that I not need.

"From what I understood, psychopaths had reduced activity in their amygdala, the part of the brain that created anxiety"

Can someone tell me who actually has this monologue in real life? I'm not sure if it will appeal to readers who are not psychology majors since it does serve as new information. But the bottom line is: it feels like mansplaining, and it annoys me to no end. Like how do you even talk to someone and suddenly have this thought processes "oh there has been reduction activity in their amygdala" then proceed to have a speech with yourself on the definition. That was so artificial and corny and I don't care what activity is Amy doing at the Gala. I'm a psychology major too, but I did not do that what...

The most disappointing part? The smut scene is literally no smut scenes because no one is fucking. It was a disappointment given the sexual tension that was building up good only to be delivered badly. And then we also have the matter with the writing which feels a bit juvenile. Although it was better than Laura Thalassa's writing in Rhapsodic, reading this still feels like reading fanfiction.

As a whole, is this book the best? Not really, yet it still is enjoyable. There was some twist, and it also ends on a cliffhanger; which was still nicely done to make me continue with the next book. If you don't mind a chosen one trope with a bit of enemies to lovers, you might want to give this book a chance as well.

This sounds like my EXACT kind of book, so why didn’t I like it? Read on to find out... but be warned that this review will be written in my native language: cursing.

Annoying as f*ck main character. Who the f*ck can’t ignore someone making silly faces at them while they’re doing a presentation? He was at the back of the lecture hall, not even right in front of you. You're twenty years old. You saw someone be burned alive. Yet you just failed college and watched your dreams go down the drain because you couldn’t ignore someone sticking their tongue out at you. And then instead of taking the lecturer aside and talking to them, you just freak out :) *cough cough* idiot *cough cough*

Psychology info-dumping. Girl, you’re not my lecturer. I don’t read paranormal romance to revise what I’m learning in college. And CONSTANTLY reciting psychological terms doesn’t make you smart, it makes you annoying. And that whole ‘stare at someone until they realise they did something wrong’ thing? Basic. But thanks for explaining it three or four times!

Smut? What smut? There was the promise of great smut, and we see just enough to know that the author is well capable of it. But she doesn’t deliver. To spell it out: there’s no sex. At all. This wouldn’t bother me if we weren’t given the illusion that there would be.

One dimensional bad guys. They’re all literally just jealous. And evil. Even bad guys have personalities, or at least something on the side.

Brain no work? You finally become interesting - Oh, I must be hallucinating! F*cking muppet.

Ya’ll didn’t see that coming? Seriously? That’s what you call a plot twist?
“I know you’re physically able to. I mean, it’s…immoral.”
“I am a demon,” he said slowly, like I was an idiot.

You are an idiot though.

There was, however, one or two things I did like. Shocking, I know.

Cool world. Well developed. A demon world hovering above the mortal one? Me like-y.

Mortana-na-na-na. I actually liked the MC when she was pretending to be Mortana. Sexy, devilish succubus is definitely her good side.

Decent plot. I liked the plot, even if it was predictable. It definitely wasn't overly complex, but I did enjoy it. It was interesting figuring out who she is. Though it could have been explained better. I'm still confused.

So many reviewers are saying that they’re surprised by how much they liked this. I am surprised by how much I didn’t like it.

It reminded me so much of The Bargainer series, and that's making me question if The Bargainer series was as good as I thought.

Maybe I’m also an idiot because I’m still going to read the next book. The MC does a complete 180 at the end of this one so hopefully she’ll be less of a whiny pain in the ass in future and more like a fiery succubus.

"May I ask you why you have these things?"
"Well, you have magic, and I have my own superpower. It's called anxiety."

Well...this book was certainly something.

I don't know if it was intentional, but City of Thorns doesn't take itself too seriously, and I recommend you extend it the same courtesy when you decide to give it a try.
It is, in fact, way lighter than you might expect, and while I found the plot a little lacking and the main character (and her male counterpart) a tad too immature, I had fun reading it.
It has a promising start and it's super fast-paced and packed with humor, enough at least to get you through its 300 pages without boring you out of your mind.
I have to say, though, if there's something that really bothered me was how at the start we got a lot of info-dumping through a dialogue MC and her best friend are having. I'm all for some good old back-story, but I hate when you need an infinite dialogue to get your infos across the story, and I dislike it even more when it's obvious.
Like when you're watching those reality shows where people who are friends are having a conversation and one asks the other a question in front of the cameras that they'd obviously should have already asked, given they've been friends for a while.
It made me a cringe a little, if I have to be honest.

Crawford's writing isn't new to me, as I've already read and enjoyed another one of their previous books, but I found this book somehow a bit juvenile. It sounded sometimes like the writing was all over the place and nowhere all at once.
It was also very absurd, but not in a bad way, so I don't count it as a flaw.
A flaw, for example, would be that the demons in this story act more like students from Caroline Peckham's Zodiac Academy than actual creatures from the underworld (they were really really really weird demons to be honest), and there's something very superficial and static about the whole story.
As I said previously, though, it all depends on how you get into it.
I kept going and wasn't disappointed. A little underwhelmed, maybe, but only because I think the blurb and cover mislead readers into thinking this is more serious than it actually is.
Think of it as fanfiction, and I think you'll be alright.

I'm not a fan of the romance.
It lacked substance and I definitely expected more spice from a book with a steamy build up like the one presented here, but I've read worse.
I liked Rowan, even if she felt aproximate and not well developed. Being inside her head wasn't exhausting, despite the endless stream of wild thoughts she seemed to have; I appreciated her humor and how she wasn't afraid of showing her weakness.
One thing I definitely didn't like about her (and the dialogue, along with it) was how often she started her questions to Orion with "Orion?", like she's a kid. I have an almost four-year-old and he starts 90% of his phrases saying "Mamma?". I had the same feeling about her wording, even if her questions didn't involve missing Lego pieces or "Where do I put this booger?"
On the other hand, Mr Lord of Chaos didn't really live up to its title and left me cold and meh-ing.
I expected more from him, especially considering he's a supernatural winged dude named Orion, who has white hair and calls you "love" in a British accent.
I mean...he should be a natural dreamboat.
He reminded me of a less broody and prude Edward Cullen, somehow.
Eh, you know what? He wasn't that bad, but he was described to be this toxic alpha male he wasn't and I think that's his problem.

I overall had a good time with this book, and while I recognize this isn't a masterpiece or a new favorite by a long shot, it kept me entertained for a couple of days.

"What are you? I breathed."
"Magnificent," he murmured.

I almost never stop reading a book halfway through… but this was just, in my opinion, not good. I was bored, the main character was ridiculous, the world building was non-existent, and the writing was not for me.

An actual line: “I must have looked a little maniacal because he was staring at me like I’d just announced my legs were made of ocelots.” What does that even MEAN. The efforts to make the main character “quirky” just go way too far. She’s awkward but not in a relatable way - it’s just odd.

In one scene, she walks in on the demon reading Fifty Shades of Grey and she blushes. I’m sorry, are we 12? What is going on here?

Anyway, couldn’t bear to read anymore. I gave it 100 pages and was miserable.

This is the case of a great idea but poorly executed! While the MC is so fucking boring, the twisty twist was very obvious and predictable! Characters with no real substance, hugely infantile writing, plot is non existent and dear oh dear everything just falls into place for the story to just move along … why are there so many 4-5 star ratings ? 🤷🏻‍♀️🙄

P.S. What is with the fucking psycho babble and all the questions : but do you have a soul? But do you feel empathy ? betch nobody cares 😱

A Mediocre Start to the Series - 2.5 stars!

I recently finished reading City of Thorns, the first book in "The Demon Queen Trials" series by C.N. Crawford left me feeling rather unimpressed and underwhelmed. While the premise seemed promising and held the potential for an engaging fantasy adventure, the execution fell short on multiple fronts.

One of the primary issues I had with this book was the lackluster writing style. It lacked the prose and finesse needed to elevate the story into something truly captivating. The author's attempts at building suspense and weaving intricate plot twists felt forced and contrived. The protagonists, unfortunately, lacked depth and felt one-dimensional. I struggled to connect with them or empathize with their struggles, which made it challenging to become invested in the overall plot. Moreover, the dialogue felt forced and unnatural at times, further hindering my ability to emotionally engage with the story.

In my opinon, this book may not have been written with the intention of being taken too seriously. At least that's how it seemed to me. However I'm still curious to see where the series goes from here. Usually, Giving up is not my thing. So let's see.

Wow!!!! City of Thorns is a fabulous read! I love anything having to do with demon bad boys and let me say that Orion is smoking hot! With dark sensuality he's every women's fucking fantasy!!! Not only is he beautiful to look at but his way with words and touch had me swooning for him. Yes he's arrogant and a bit of a prick but who cares!!! If Rowan doesn't want him I'll gladly sign up for team evil. This is a captivating tale set in a demon world were demons are the hierarchy and humans are considered less then. Like any other court theirs politics and intrigue around every corner with many enemies just waiting to take you out. So when Orion makes a deal with the human Rowan that if she spys on the king and finds out his weakness in return he will help her find the demon that killed her mother when she was a little girl. Rowan doesn't trust Orion but what he makes her feel with the touch of his hand and the way he looks at her or how he whispers in her ear what he wants to do to her its hard to remember that he is a demon and could even be her mothers murderer. This book was packed with many hot steamy scenes and the chemistry between these two so erotic ! CN Crawford is a hell of a storyteller and her characters simply divine especially Orion the lord of chaos! I love this incubus bad boy!!! With fangs and wings and eyes that turn black when aroused what's not to like! Theirs plenty of twists and turns and while it ended with a new revelation about Rowan and questions her and orion's future I can't wait to read book 2 Lord of the Embers! This story's only just begun! Until next time Luv's💞💋

City of Thorns was addictive from start to finish! The story has a strong female-lead, Rowan, who also has relatable weaknesses and a fun and quirky personality. Prepare for lots of sexual tension, banter-filled dialogues and a sizzling hot atmosphere in this NA fantasy read!

City of Thorns is a magical city full of demons that looms over the human society. The demons are dangerously beautiful blood-drinking creatures with magical powers. These two worlds have managed to find a way to coexist. Rowan is a human girl with a traumatizing past: she witnessed her mother being burned to death by a demon. Now, driven by revenge, Rowan is determined to find her mother's killer, and for that she needs to find a way into the City of Thorns. There is a catch: Rowan is the spitting image of one of the most dangerous and seductive demons to ever exist, a succubus.

My favorite element of the story was the chemistry and undeniable attraction between Rowan and the mysterious demon Orion. C. N. Crawford managed to masterfully create a morally grey love interest to the level of SJM! He is lethal, powerful, snarky and evil, yet he appears to care about Rowan. There are so many mysteries behind his motivations and his past that had me quickly binge-reading this book to absorb as much of Orion as possible!

A dark and seductive binge-worthy read that took me by its talons! Will I be eagerly expecting the sequel? Hell yes!

Thank you to the author for gifting me a copy!

Shall we talk about it?
... let's talk about it. I liked the premise, the blurb was intriguing, and the execution of it was...Good, but not great. The style of writing was okay, but there was a kind of... immaturity to it, at times. She's 22 and keeps getting distracted by someone pulling faces during her presentation? Surely look away, bruh. Also the pacing felt a little off. It doesn't feel like the Heroine and male love interest's relationship was given enough time to develop before he started spilling bare ancient secrets about himself to her. He also wouldn't shut up about how evil he was (whilst of course hiding a deep secret sadness) but we didn't see much of this evil. Go raze a village and stop mournfully recounting your tales of woe. Don't get me wrong I love a secretly tortured soul, but this is a CHAOS DEMON. LIKE THE ULTIMATE CHAOS DEMON. Don't you got HOES? Wars to start? Empires to crumble? Pussy to eat? Ffs. I needed more tension to *SIMMER* between them. Give me heated LONGING. Pining, desperation barely stifled horniness.

That being said, it is still an enjoyable read and I would recommend it to some extent!

I've picked up books by this author in the past and for the most part, I was very lukewarm to them. This one, however, was an exception I wasn't expecting it to be! This was SO DAMN good. Succubi and incubi are such interesting creatures. I wish more authors would take a swing at these kinds of creatures more often. Don't get me wrong, I adore vampires and werewolves as much as the next person but a change of scenery is good every once in a while.

Rowan was just spunky and sassy enough to keep my attention. I liked that she didn't take things lying down. Her inquisitiveness was a breath of fresh air when it came to getting some actual answers to some major questions. I suspected the twist that happened involving her but what actually went down in the novel was way better!

The Lord of Chaos was such an enigmatic character with a great sense of humor. He was detached from reality in just the right amount to not come across unhinged. His sense of humor was incredible. A monster after my own heart if I must say!

I was expecting an interesting and out-of-the-box ending but not what I actually got. It's an amazing feeling when an author outdoes my expectations of a story. The sequel can't come soon enough! I NEED answers to ALL my burning questions!

The premise of the book was very intriguing and i expected a lot more from it that what we got. I'm really sad it didn't match my expectations. I totally 𝐉𝐈𝐍𝐗𝐄𝐃 myself here.

Now the world building was really great i very much liked the different city systems, laws and demons. The characters on the other end were not very well written as in we should've had more from them then what we got. Because there was a lot of potential there. Overall 𝐍𝐎𝐓 bad but could've been 𝐖𝐀𝐘 better. PLus you give me sex demons as your main characters and you decide to focus on the psychology aspect of the situation and environnement. 𝐑𝐄𝐀𝐋𝐋𝐘. 4.5 holy-cliffy stars

I’m so glad all three books are out, because I immediately started book two after finishing this. Also… my crush on a certain silver-haired man (ahem… Spike from Buffy 👀) crossed my mind when I saw he had locks like him 😮‍💨

As I stared at him, my heart started to pound faster. Divine. His silver hair hung down to heartbreakingly sharp cheekbones. He sported a high-collared black coat that hung open. Under his jacket, he wore a thin gray sweater that showed off a muscular body. It looked soft, but I could tell the abs beneath it were rock hard. I found my pulse racing as I thought of running my fingers over the material and feeling his muscles twitch. I’d never enjoyed sex—not once in my life. But as I looked at him, I thought there was a man who could actually satisfy me.

Side note- the graphic audio is so good 😮‍💨. I wish all books were graphic audios, or at least duet narration 🤣.

The book opens up with Rowan (22) doing a presentation in her college class. In the back of the class, her high school bully keeps making obscene gestures that distract her 😐, so she’s unable to complete her presentation. All her life, Rowan’s wanted to avenge her mom’s death by finding the demon that killed her ☹️- but she can only do this by entering the City of Thorns. By going to school there, she can finally make that happen. She goes to a bar later that night with her friend Shai when she feels a presence enter… one that keeps looking at her, and she can’t help but be drawn to him as well 👀… and this presence’s a demon; his name’s Orion (400+) 👀 and he’s HOT AF 😅.

Orion sees her and mistakes her for being Mortana 😬, a succubus who killed his entire family, and now he’s seeking revenge and wants to kill her 😅. Rowan assures him she’s human, and there’s only one way to test that- by biting her 👀. When he confirms she’s human, he decides she can help him with finding a way of killing the current king, Cambriel.

“Arch your neck,” he said in velvety voice. I couldn't resist the urge to submit to his command. My eyes closed, and I tilted my head to give him access, making myself vulnerable to him. I felt his breath warming my throat, and a pounding heat swept through my body.
ahem. Me too Rowan

Rowan’s fine with that- she’ll be able to enter the demon-filled city and who ruthlessly burned her mom to death.

Orion’s gonna have to help Rowan disguise herself as the succubus Mortana 👀, which means, making sure she’s just as seductive as Mortana was…

And they’ll have to try to keep their hands off of each other 😅…

What I liked/loved:
—the world building 👀. I love immersing myself into a new world, and this was done well

—the tension 👀. Uffff… there’s so much of it 😅. As soon as Orion and Rowan meet, the tension becomes explosive 🥵. I don’t know how they contained themselves 🤷🏻‍♀️. If I were Rowan, I’d be all over the demon 😉. The seduction is off the charts 🫠

—the slow burn 🔥. So, their first kiss happens after 70% and then, well, then Orion shows Rowan exactly why he’s an incubus 🥵 and it’s 😮‍💨. This man can do damage with just his words and touch 😅. Lucky lucky Rowan 👀. Too bad we don’t see more lol
“Tell me,” he whispered in my ear, “that you want me to give you what you need.” I turned my head, my mouth now only inches from his perfect lips. “I want you to give me what I need,” I whispered.

—the banter 🤣. I love when there’s levity in serious situations 😅 and Rowan isn’t one to give as good as she gets 💁🏻‍♀️

—Rowan’s strengths and goals ❤️. I love that she knows how to defend herself 👏🏻

—the reasons why they’re seeking revenge ☹️. Both of them have compelling reasons, and I sympathized with them 🫶

—the twists 😱😳. I mean. I had a feeling they were coming, but still 😳. The Cliffy 😮‍💨

—Orion coming in at the right time 😅. Phew 😅. I love knight in shining armors that are on the dark side 👀

—I wouldn’t have minded if some of the evil people had met their demise 🤷🏻‍♀️. 🤣🤣🤣🤣

—since it’s the first book of the trilogy, I know we’ll get more in the next ones, so I won’t be too harsh.

What makes a person who they are, their essence? Was it a soul or their memories?

I can't wait for City of Thorns to blow up on all social media platforms and everyone going gaga over it🤭

City of Thorns is a Paranormal Romance fantasy with a sinfully sexy demon, the Lord of Chaos, Orion of the City of Thorns who imprisons Rowan, a mortal woman, after mistaking her for her succubus doppelgänger. Rowan has always wanted to enter the City of Thorns which is full of demons, but only mortal servants and students get to work and study inside that city. She wants to stay in the forbidden city to find her mom's killer. So when he tastes her blood and finally realizes that she is mortal, they make a deal. She will pretend as the sexy doppelganger and get close to the King and find his secrets for Orion and in turn, he will help her find her Mom's killer.
But there is one problem he is her number one suspect....

Let's talk Non-spoilers first:)

The characters were so fun. Rowan, was an amazing and smart female lead though I'll be honest I did not like it at all when the author tried to make her seem *weird*. The number of times she used weird, weirdo to describe her turned me off. But only in the beginning, as the story progresses, Rowan's quirky nature makes the book more entertaining to read. She's the typical Genz lol at times annoying but it was cool.
I liked how she didn't take Jack's bullshit and how she constantly used her psychological knowledge (she's a psychology student in the mortal world) while posing as her doppelganger and dealing with other people. I enjoyed reading that. I also liked her character growth towards the end of the book. Let's hope the author continues that in the sequel.

The only thing apart from the word weirdo used to describe her😂 I didn't like was how she became all, he is my protector at times (maybe it's cuz that's my least favorite trope but still that irritated me). Also how she couldn't gauge the most obvious signs in front of her but that's ok I guess cuz I loved finding out the secrets with her😂. She was hilarious all the time.

And now let's talk about THE sexy demon, Lord of Chaos, Orion. He was the embodiment of sensuality, darkness, and ruthlessness. I liked how he was simping on her hard (but not showing that often) while still maintaining the distance and stopping when she said that's enough. They had to make the King jealous for Rowan to get close to him. So, they were making out in public a lot of times in the book. Yeah, there is a jealousy trope and a fake dating trope + a lot of spiciness yup a full package. I would like to know more about him and his past. I liked how his morally grey persona was justified accurately with a past (it wasn't over the top dark nor was it too meh), it matched the vibe of the story.

As for the side characters, there wasn't much to know about them it's just Orion and Rowan most of the time. For example, The King, we did not get to know his secrets (which was kinda the main point in the story) but I guess the author kept it to reveal in the sequel.

I also would like to know more about the war between humans and demons in plot. Their history, whatever little we got I loved every bit of it. I want more of that in the sequel.

Though let me point out that nor the world-building neither is the magic system developed properly in the book. I would like to know more about the magic, how does it actually works? why just the royalty? What about the other demons like Nama(one of the side characters)? This book was pretty short so I guess we will get more in book 2 especially because of the way it all ended in this one.

And for all the sexual innuendos, seductive talk and walk, there was hardly any smut in it??? Though I understand why now (it's a spoiler and it's funny🤭). We did get a lot of spicinesses and sizzling chemistry between the two. As all they were doing was hooking up and making other people jealous, it added to a lot of spice. It's also kind of enemies to friends to lovers (not exactly) as he was one of her suspects.

The plot got much better till the end. This one is an addictive pageturner from the start till the end! Highly recommend it!

Now let's talk spoilers!! (i would just like to highlight certain moments and my thoughts on that)

1) What Jack did with her was so bad, along with bullying and stalking he harassed her too, I'm glad she punched him right in the eye!

2)
I’d like my student loans paid off, like we talked about. And to get the undergrad degree. And while I’m at it, a hundred thousand dollars.” Why not?(and that's what my friends is the definition of making good use of opportunity when it knocks on your door🤭😂)

3)
They had it all wrong, but nothing makes you seem crazier than trying to scream that you’re the only sane one.
(Our relatable queen right there)

4)
I could say with some certainty that sun’s rays had never hit my nipples before.

that's so random lol. Girlie be knowing what her nipples want. The number of times she described the state of her nipples I swear her nipples could have a book of their own.😂

5)
This is making my heart beat faster, almost like a…like a warning. As if something bad is about to happen.” My eyes widened. “Yeah. That’s anxiety. Are you feeling anxious for my safety, or are you worried you’ll be caught out?” His gaze shuttered. “Don’t be ridiculous. I’m a lethal four-hundred-year-old demon of chaos, imbued with godlike powers. I fear nothing.”
(why is this so funny and cute)

6) The trial sequence was so good. I wished Lili had attacked her or something that would have made more sense. As she is one of the royalty with the fire magic and also one of her suspects so I expected more rivalry instead of just glares and jealously between the two of them.

7) Also there were so many times (i could list it here but it's unnecessary) when I suspected him to be the Lilu but Rowan couldn't even take one hint for all her spywork😂 well our girl was too caught up in his sensual aura to think anything clearly.

Love the demon city.
Interesting male MC.
Tragic back story ✔️
Handsome as fuck✔️
Blue icy eyes✔️
Morally gray character ✔️
Great abs✔️
Hidden character twist✔️
And well - DEMONS✔️

Not to sure about Rowan though.
Overall I like her.
Love the name. Loved her stubbornness. She felt a little cheesy at times. Loved the little psychology comments. Her character was really interesting though & I am dying to explore her identity with her. 😈

I picked this up on a whim because I’m a sucker for angelology and demonology. There are no angels, but there certainly are demons. Especially sexy ones that gave me Jonathan Morgenstern vibes. 😏

The most interesting aspect of this book was without a doubt the world building. I love seeing how different authors interweave the supernatural within our own world. The demon city depicted here in particular was so much fun to explore.

This book was unexpectedly heavy on psychological theory, which was a unique take. I’m interested to see where the story will go and how the characters will develop in the future. ☺️

I tried to like it, but it was just too... juvenile. Oh look, a demon! He's so badass. He's sex on legs. I am a feisty heroine. No man compares to the demon. Who is sex on legs. And I am feisty.

Yeah. No.

Trama/Plot ⭐⭐
Personaggi/Characters ⭐⭐⭐
Stile/Style ⭐⭐⭐
Spicy ⭐⭐⭐

***
An average novel. A simple and unpretentious plot, a little banal and obvious, without innovations or major twists. However, the style is good, flowing and never boring. The characters certainly deserve further exploration. The demonic city's description is very particular, full of cell phones, taxis, poolside aperitifs and glamorous evenings.

I received this arc this afternoon, it is now 1245am… it’s that good!

This book is an NA fantasy in a modern setting. It’s kind of a paranormal murder mystery with a plot that starts immediately.

This book gripped me from the start and captivated me in the entirety. I HAD TO KNOW what was happening next.

Some tropes in this one are:
Enemies to Lovers
Fake Relationship
Hidden Identity
Hidden Power

Absolutely stunning read, slightly spicy, and a 5 star read from me.

Well done

First Thoughts
I need the next one immediately

Summary
The City of Thorns is a demon city, set up separately from the humans (who are aware of their presence in the world). Rowan wants to enter the city to find the demon who killed her mother. Unbeknownst to her, she looks identical to the last sucubus, who apparently screwed over lots of demons. One such demon is the powerful, Orion, who at first kidnaps Rowan to enact his revenge. Upon finding out she is not Mortana, the two devise a plot to get what they want.

Review
This was a really fun fantasy romance set to a really interesting and unique backdrop. I absolutely flew through this and had so much fun reading!

Rowan was a fun character in that she wasn't fully sure of herself. When she was pretending to be Mortana, she definitely tapped into some inner confidence and energy and came out of her shell. Her and Orion circled around one another as their ruse continued. The tension between these two was really fun, as it became harder to tell what was just part of the ruse and what was real.

One of my favorite elements of this story was definitely the world building. I loved the aspect of the modern day demon city, and I found it to be really enthralling. It was fun to see all of the all powerful demons interact and use power plays against one another.

Rowan has anxiety, and it usually manifests in her being overprepared for any disaster. I love that this "weakness" actually turned out to be her strength in this book! I feel like so often anxiety is portrayed as some sort of character flaw, and it ended up really helping Rowan stay ahead of her enemies as she was always on high alert in the demon city. I just really appreciated that story line!

The ending of this book was bananas and I am so excited for the next book to come out because I know I will gobble it up!

City of Thorns is a paranormal fantasy romance. But does it ends there? No!

There's a mortal girl who wants to go the world of demons at any cost-including her life, a mysterious, dangerous demon prince who by his own admission is an absolute arsehole and wants to kill that mortal girl assuming her to be someone else-only to find out she is a mortal and then manages to be enthralled by her, blood oaths, initiation trail, fake dating to make someone jealous (seems childish? Psychopaths involved, what to do!?), murder investigations and revenge plots, secret spells, secret messages, secret identities, and not to forget the sexual tension that is simmering all the time. It was all packed in this installment of the series.

As soon as I started reading it, I couldn't stop. The 'What happens next?' kept me turning pages until the very end. Again, only to find out, City of Thorns isn't a standalone.

Did I mention there was a reference of my all time favorite actor - Keanu Reeves! 😍

Just read this -
“This sounds insane,” he said, cutting me off, and scrubbed a hand over his jaw. “I thrive in chaos. I like to watch things burn. But this situation is making me feel something different, unfamiliar. I don’t like it,” he said in a clipped tone. “This is making my heart beat faster, almost like a…like a warning. As if something bad is about to happen.”
My eyes widened. “Yeah. That’s anxiety. Are you feeling anxious for my safety, or are you worried you’ll be caught out?”
His gaze shuttered. “Don’t be ridiculous. I’m a lethal four-hundred-year-old demon of chaos, imbued with godlike powers. I fear nothing.”
“Not sure I believe you anymore, Orion.”
I may not know magic, but I know anxiety.

There are certain and many things that weren't actually explained, including the entire fantasy world created. But, as this is only Book 1 (also, partly due to the ending), I hope all those blind spots are cleared in the next book! Sigh Now, I have to wait for the Book 2. And, I am patient? Hell, no! Can't wait to read the next book in the series!

Do you know that feeling when you scream into your pillow because you feel too many emotions and you just need to let them out?

This book made me feel that.

City of Thorns was a real page-turner. The moment I started reading it, I couldn’t put it down. I was reading it alongside another book, which I am enjoying very much, and yet it was a struggle for me to stop reading this one. The atmosphere, the tension, the chemistry between the characters, the passion! I loved everything about this.

Demons in this book act like actual demons, some being extremely vain, others selfish, all of them dangerous. Even Orion, the love interest in this incredible book, is a Demon with the capital ‘D’. He’s sexy as hell, with a nice British accent and piercing eyes, but you never forget that there’s a dangerous creature beneath all that. He possesses a lethal grace and honesty, and he proves he’s the real deal on a number of occasions. It was so refreshing to read. Many times, demons tend to be romanticized to the point that they’re diminished to the role of brooding love interest. But the author portrayed Orion just the way I like him. Redeemable? Yes. Dangerous? Also yes. But despite that, Orion and Rowan’s interactions never felt toxic or imbalanced. It never felt like he was imposing himself in all his demon glory on her, which I appreciated so much.

Do I love him? Affirmative.

As you can tell, I have many feelings about Orion, but I haven’t forgotten Rowan, the protagonist. She’s amazing. Resilient, intelligent, a normal young woman who throws herself in a dangerous role to find out the truth about her mother’s murder, and who doesn’t back down from talking some sense into a demon even though he’s…well, very scary. I loved how she took control of the narrative and did everything in her power to get out of tricky and terrifying situations.

And finally, the storyline. The plot was mysterious and interesting. The fact that I was very invested in the interactions between Rowan and Orion didn’t distract me with trying to figure out the mystery behind Rowan’s mother’s death, and also what Orion’s endgame was in regards to the king. Though I started to develop some theories—and I still have so many for the sequel!—I was completely surprised by the turn of events. And devastated. And very excited for the sequel, which I need immediately!

In short, I have another book to add to my favorites.

I recommend this to all lovers of romance! This book was phenomenal and I can’t wait to see what happens next. I feel a book hangover coming.

Thank you to the author for sending me a copy. Opinions are my own.

“In a world of demons and magic, it was starting to become difficult to know what was real and what wasn’t.”

5 stars:

Gahhh I loved this book! Absolutely binged it. The character development was so good, the world building was fascinating, and the twists! So twisty. I like to think that I see twists coming pretty regularly, but this one definitely snuck up on me!

Orion is such a swoonworthy morally grey character. Ugh. I love him. He…dare I say it….reminds me of a Rhysand type character. The more you get to know him, the more complex you realize he is. I am SO excited to get to know more about him and his history in book two.

I also absolutely loved the main character, Rowan. She’s really funny (the line about purse yogurt actually made me laugh out loud…and I still laugh about it whenever I remember the line) and also really smart. I loved her and I want to be her friend.

Catch me stalking the author’s instagram looking for book two news because I HAVE A NEED. Apparently it comes out in January. And the title has me EXCITED.

Thanks so much to the author for sending me a copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
