Kiersten's books might be on the shorter side, but don't let that fool you! They are jam-packed with action, cover all the bases, and will leave you amazed by the end. Her latest novel is no exception—it's got everything you could want. The concept and plot are fantastic, making it a real page-turner. You can easily finish it in a few hours because once you start, you won't want to put it down.
The story centers around Bridget, who finds herself owning the very house she was forced to leave years ago, along with a man she has always despised. This situation forces her to confront old feelings and unanswered questions from the day she was driven away from Bitter House.

This was a Modlin book I thoroughly enjoyed. The tension between the main characters was delicious, and I cared about them and how they would get along. If you just went with it t the concept the end was quite something.

What was more of a shock was that Vera also left it to Cole. She and Cole lived in the house together for a time when they were kids and didn't get along at all, so she's right livid about sharing the house with him.
I liked the thought of a build up of the suspense with the letters trickling in, and while some things they learn are shocking, it was still a bit of a slow burn to get to the big hurrah. I must say I did like what the hurrah turned out to be, though.
Overall, a quick read that is more domestic fiction with a little mystery and romance. I was hoping for more of a domestic thriller, which is the genre I prefer from this author it seems. I love the cover that gives off a good vibe for the story, but in turn it makes it seems like it should be more suspenseful and thrilling, so do I feel duped? Maybe.
Narration notes:
Bridget's narrator spoke with an attitude, which seemed perfect for the role since she wasn't feeling Cole in the beginning. Vera's narrator was perfect all around.

I know so many of us are huge fans of the authors books and if you are, then you know while she usually writes thrillers, she switches things up within the genre from time to time. I would classify this one as a romantic thriller, similar vibes to her book, Hemlock, so if you like a dash of spice with your thrills try this. As always I don’t want to say much about the plot details because KMod packed so much into this short and fast paced read, BUT I will say that is super fast paced with short cliffhanger style chapters and a couple POVs. Both viewpoints had me hooked, I was desperate to see where everything was going and I definitely never predicted the outcome. I better stop there but if you need a weekend binge read look no further

My 1st Kiersten Modglin book and I loved it!
It's a short book but the story packs a hefty punch. Quick paced, suspenseful and full of meaning. I especially like the romance aspect in this book which was quite an integral part and not that common to see in a mystery/thriller but it worked so well.
The dual POV narrative between Bridgit in the present and Vera in the past via her diary entry gave a nice change of scene and definitely perspective on the story with revelation after revelation in the form of the mysterious letters that arrive at the Bitter house, it kept me on my toes listening to whatever was coming next.
The narrators did their job well and conveyed the appropriate emotion when called up. To say I felt the feels as they felt says it all really.
Highly recommended!

So misleading. This book is not a thriller at all. It's just a mystery without any suspense.
This book is like a combination of The Heiress and How to bury your husband.
This book, though short, is still a drag to me as there is a BIG lack of actions and plot points. There is nothing happening in this book.
The twist is so ordinary that I must roll my eyes.
The characters are flat.
This should have been a romantic story, not a "thriller". And of course, you can guess who loves who in this book.
And why did Bridget have to wait for all the letters to arrive? Why didn't she herself explore the house?
Oh my god, this book is so boring.

I'm a big Modglin fan, but this one missed the mark for me. The mystery of Bitter House and the late Vera Bitter were entirely secondary to the predictable and infuriating blossoming feelings between Cole and Bridget. I'm sure many will enjoy this book, but I loath romances. Bleh!

I’ve recently discovered Kierstens work and I’m quickly turning into a fan. I just finished reading Hemlock which was an absolute 5⭐️ read for me so I had to snatch this up immediately.
“Bitter House” is giving “Heiress” by Rachel Hawkins vibes so if you enjoyed that book I’d definitely recommend giving this one a try!
Bridget has just inherited the Bitter home from her recently deceased relative, only when she moves in she finds out the house has also been left 50% to her arch nemesis Cole.
Her and Cole grew up together and have bad blood between them, but they are both too stubborn to sell and determined to remain in the home.
When Bridget starts receiving ominous letters containing concerning secrets from an anonymous source, she wonders how much truth they hold.
The story is separated between present day POV and past tales from the recently deceased herself. I enjoy the change in time lines as the secrets and stories unfold.
I enjoyed the premise and mystery to this book as well as the writing format. The only thing I wasn’t sold on was the relationship between the two main characters. They seemed to argue about childish things as full fledged adults, one minute Cole would be complaining that in the past he felt unwelcome in the home growing up and never got anything he wanted, shunned to a small room in the house. And then the next chapter they were discussing how he would be inviting a different girl from school home to hook up with every week, so it didn’t seem like he really had much to complain about after all 😂
Overall I did enjoy the read and I am a fan of this authors work so I will continue to dive into her other books. I still recommend Hemlock as my favourite book of hers so far it was a fantastic 5⭐️ for me!

My first read of 2025! I do love Kiersten Modglin books many of them have been my favorites. This one fell in the middle I found it to be a bit underwhelming. I enjoyed the twists and the revelation at the end. The lesson was important but also a little bit far fetched??

Another cross over genre book by Modglin and I AM HERE FOR IT!!! Bridget’s parents passed away and she lived with her grandmother, Vera. But after school, she’s kicked out. Bridget is surprised to learn of Vera’s passing and that she left the house to her… and Cole, the son of Vera’s house manager. Now they are roommates and have to figure out what to do with the house. Then the first letter arrives. It’s signed “your friend” and reveals Vera’s secrets. Things about Vera that Bridget never knew. Now Bridget can’t decide who to trust, and she has no idea what horrors that may lie in and around the Bitter house.
True to style, Modglin brings you another book that is full of secrets and twists. I really loved the premise of this book – the letter idea was genius. The letters that Bridget receives sends her on a sort of scavenger hunt to find out Vera’s secrets. I couldn’t wait for the next letter to come, and for all of them to come so that I could figure out WHO was sending them.
Again, true to style, this is really fast paced. As many of you know, I need fast paced. I don’t want to get bogged down in too much set up, or too much unnecessary background. I don’t care for books where all the action is in the last 50 or so pages. I want the action throughout! Modglin writes books that are true thrillers.
I did say there was a cross over, and it was – there was a bit of romance in this book. And I LOVED IT! Modglin’s romantic thrillers (like this one and Hemlock) are some of my absolute favorites. I would love to see the day where we get a true romance, or even a dark romance from her.

This was a great domestic thriller! I love KMOD's books, so I was excited when I was picked to be a part of her ARC team. I am really enjoying her books that cross genres, and this romantic thriller didn't disappoint. It had everything I didn't know I needed: drama, suspense, romance, family secrets, betrayal, and a fast paced plot! I loved both main characters and was rooting for them from the beginning.
This book was impossible to put down! This might be my fave KMOD book to date! There were twists and turns galore. My heart was racing the whole time. I thought this story was so different and unique, and I loved KMOD's delivery. It was creepy and suspenseful, with such a beautiful love story woven in. I highly recommend if you like thrillers and romance. This one did not disappoint. Highly bingeable!

Mood/ Seasonal Reading: I don’t think it’s got a specific time and if it did I forgot
I feel so bad saying this but the book was just forgettable. I forgot it’s setting and I almost forgot to post a review. I think to start it followed well and captured my attention. While the plot has been done before, the set up was interesting and I enjoyed the letters.
However, as the reveals began I found myself less and less invested. They felt predictable I guess.
Despite some okay characters this just felt like it can be skipped. There’s better spooky inheritance mysteries out there.

When Vera Bitter died, her house, called Bitter House, did not go to her surviving children. Instead, it went to her granddaughter Bridget. Bridget had been taken in by her grandmother after the death of her parents, but it wasn’t a warm and nurturing environment. This really makes Bridget query as to why she was left the house, especially since there are some who believe that she should not have it.
There is another complication for Bridget, and this is needless to say that she doesn’t even want the huge house. The house was also left to the son of Vera’s household manager, Cole Warner. Although Bridget and Cole grew up together, they had a very dysfunctional relationship. Now they are temporarily residing together until they can decide what to do with the house.
As rocky as things are between Bridget and Cole, with resentment ruling as king, Bridget has yet another problem. She has found a letter on her doorstop. And then another. When she reads the content of these disturbing letters, she finds herself really shaken, and knows that she must at least find common ground with Cole for the present.
It doesn’t take Bridget and Cole long to realize that secrets of the past have a powerful effect on their present, but also their future. Meanwhile, their contentious relationship begins to take a new turn, and this is despite both personal struggles that Bridget is dealing with as well as the pressure she is receiving from her grandmother’s children. Bridget cannot help but to wonder if one of them are responsible for the terror she is recently experiencing.
Kiersten Modglin has done it again! A super twisty novel that doesn’t miss a beat! I loved the story within a story as this book developed. I will be here front and center for her next release.

Another winner and probably one of my favourite of Kiersten’s to date! Full of twists and turns, toxic family traits and secrets with a side of romance.
Bridget has a tumultuous relationship with her grandmother Vera. So when she learns that Vera has bequeathed her home to Bridget she is shocked. She is further shocked to learn that it has also been left to her arch-nemesis from her childhood.
Without giving too much away, the duel timeline and plot, drip feeds a shocking and emotional story - I even shed a tear towards the end.
In true Modglin style, I was hooked form the beginning to the end. Highly recommended!

Bridgette was raised by her grandmother after her parents pass away. Once she was an adult, her grandmother then kicked her out. Since then, Bridgette was hurt and wondered why her grandmother would do that. Her grandmother then passed away and she and her step brother inherit her house. This is a problem because they never got along. Bridgette then starts to receive letters and the contents will change everything.
I have only read a few books by Kiersten Modglin, but this one is my favorite! The book immediately starts with action and it sucks you right in. It was a quick read that was well written. I look forward to reading more from the author.

I really enjoyed this one, in fact I think this is my favourite book by this author so far, it was fast paced, suspenseful and kept me guessing all the way through!
When Bridget’s cold and calculating grandma Vera dies she leaves Bridget her house to share with someone from her past, someone whom she shares no love lost with! Whilst navigating this back at the her grandmothers house she starts to receive letters from someone containing secrets from her grandmothers past!
I especially like the letter element of these book, I was really eager to discover all of the secrets in Vera’s past!

I want to start by saying I am a fan of Kiersten Modglin! Her books are quick and easy thrillers that usually have a big twist you'd never see coming. Unfortunately, this one didn't quite do it for me. It was a little too on the romance side of things which I had a hard time connecting with coming from this author. That said, I am still looking forward to more works by her in the future!!

This has become my favorite Modglin cover!
I truly loved this one! I liked the secret letters aspect and I always love a creepy house vibe!
From page one this thriller hooks you and you'll find yourself flipping through the pages eagerly trying to put the pieces together. Just when you think you have things figured out or your feelings towards a character, you're slapped with another twist that leaves you sitting there guessing your life's decisions. This one definitely brought out more emotions than I was expecting. I was curious, angry, frustrated, and even liberated!

Kmod never disappoints! Solid story that I definitely enjoyed, it just didn't have that jaw dropping "Wait, WHAT?!?" moment, that Kiersten Modglin books are known for.
I listened to this book on audio, and the narrators were fantastic, and really brought the story to life!

In a reading rut? Have a free weekend and want to cozy up with a book? Love a good fast-paced thriller with a hint of romance? Bitter House is the book for you!
I would classify Bitter House as a romantic thriller with a vibe that reminded me Hemlock, one of my favorite KMod books. The two books had similarities but also were differentiated in their own ways and as usual, had some fun plot twists and turns.
Bitter House was a quick read and kept me engaged from beginning to end. It’s just about 200 pages (depending on the format you read in) so this could easily be binged in one to two sittings. I personally savored this book over 4 days but picked up right where I left off each time. There are cliffhangers from chapter to chapter to keep you hooked in, but enough differentiation in the story line to give you some nice places to naturally pause and put the book down if you are a busy bee, audiobooker, or like to read multiple books at once.
I personally loved waiting to see the next letter that was going to come in and was totally wrong on who it was - I didn’t predict the ending at all! I liked the mixed POV throughout the book and KMod didn't miss a beat with this shorter thriller.

Glad this was a quick one. Too melodramatic for my liking. Even though it was a quick listen, there seemed to be so much unnecessary dialogue, or monologues. This wasn’t a thriller. More of a will they won’t they, enemies to lovers theme with some misguided mystery. Glad it’s over.

Maybe not one of my more classic ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️, Bitter House was a quick audiobook by Kiersten Modglin. This story follows Bridget, who inherits her grandmothers estate after her death. Having been dropped off at Vera Bitter’s house following the death of her own parents. Once old enough to move out, Bridget had no further contact with her grandmother and always felt misguided and unloved.
There’s a twist though, the estate was left to her AND Cole, a man whose mom cleaned the estate as a live in worker back when he was a child. While everyone wants a piece of this expensive property, Bridget and Cole must work together to uncover the dark secrets left behind.
In true Kiersten fashion, this book was a quick and to the point without messy details. The history of the estate, Bridget, Cole, and Vera unravel as you go, versus having a lengthy character build up before you get to the juicy parts. The story held great suspense and the ending was not predictable. I flew this in on sitting. It was a great storyline/concept that was expertly executed!

The title and the cover initially drew me in. Then the synopsis pulled me in more. The premise was intriguing. I enjoyed this book so much. It delivered a great mystery that I couldn't figure out. I had fun trying though. The letters arriving from a secret source was very entertaining.
