When every bite you take could mean certain death, how would you survive?

In Michigan's upper peninsula, a mother and her two children quietly work on their family farm, unaware of the death and devastation that is soon to come.

In Las Vegas at a business conference, the family's father barely survives the first wave of horror - but his safety is anything but assured.

The #1 best-selling and most prolific post-apocalyptic author - with over 3.5 million books sold - Mike Kraus is back, writing with Paula Lester to bring you a tale of survival and courage in the face of overwhelming odds.

A massive storm bears down on Texas, unleashing tornadoes and hurricane force winds that level entire buildings, including a food processing plant that is unknowingly storing a large quantity of dimethlmercury - a devastingly dangerous neurotoxin.

As this toxin is swept into the atmosphere and spread across the country by the storm system, millions who are in its path die from exposure - but the worst is yet to come. Before the storms hit, the processing plant inadvertently shipped the mercury across the country, resulting in a contamination of processed foods unlike anything in history.

As the death toll rises astrononically across the country from both the toxic storms and poisoned food, any survivors are faced with a simple how can they possible survive?

This is a decent start to a series, though there were a few editing issues, like incomplete sentences etc. Most of the main characters were likeable folks (esp Jane and Mike) and easy for which to cheer. I did have some issues with the story itself. A deadly toxin pulled into a major storm is somewhat believable, but I don't see that it would persist for so long, nor kill absolutely everyone and melt their skin as portrayed. There is no explanation as to why monster storms are now appearing everywhere, even places that rarely see such storms. And these new storms have the bad toxin too. That just doesn't make much sense to me. I found the life on the farm a bit detailed and somewhat tedious in the story. They seem to have a large farm, lots of crops and animals, yet a lone woman, 14-year-old daughter and 10-year-old (sheltered) son are able to manage it all. This was true before the disaster since Jed is working construction. That did not seem feasible either. Still, I do want to see what happens to these people.

This was a really good read! A first time for reading this writers work & hopefully not the last! A good paced, exciting plot, well developed characters, a good storyline, pretty much everything you could expect from this type of story! I did really enjoy it & will definitely read the next book!

I don't feel like this series really got started until the end of the book. But the ending was intriguing enough that I am ready for the next one. I like all the characters, but I haven't got truly invested in them yet. So on to book 2.

An even MORE unforgiving apocalypse...

Lester and Kraus have collaborated to create what might be the most unforgiving apocalypse authors have created. The initial shock of the toxin carried by the storms is staggeringly toxic is compounded by the fact that it will go on to poison all food produced post-event, and compounds that with air that's caustic/toxic spreading inexorably wherever atmospheric conditions dictate. Having HAZMAT gear is essentially prerequisite to survival in the effected areas. How much more imposing can this scenario be?!! 5/5 well earned stars. Not to be missed by fans of apocalyptic sci-fi!
