The stakes have never been higher.

When Sean Lawrence was knocked into time-statis, he never expected to end up in system-apocalypse future, fighting against impossible odds just to keep himself alive. And yet, he thrived in the apocalypse, doing so well that he's now in the running for the dying planet’s power.

But this time, he's fighting against both system generated monsters and opportunistic offworlders. On his side are a few elite Earthlings who also fought their way through to the end, and trusty Brett. To save what's left of his planet, he'll need to go all-in. To rise up and win in a competition that's inherently stacked against him.

"Stellar work from RC Joshua! Lots of action and adventure, craziness and puns. Looking forward to reading the next one." - Reader review from book 1

This is second in a System Apocalypse story. Read in order.

So you know what to expect, particularly as the author keeps the pace up in this one throughout. Which is good. I liked Sean and his interactions with his tag-along crafter, Brett, were outstanding. Sean is creative and determined and the situation he is in challenges him to dig deep. Having a strong ally who helps push his creativity was simply awesome.

And this was coasting along at a solid four stars until a turning point in the last third or so. When it broke me. Like a lot. I became disconnected from the story and finished largely on inertia.

The story ends with the climax I want. There's more to the series, but I think I'll stop here as I'm satisfied with the parts I cared about. I'm going to give three stars because it was engaging. I just broke on some authorial choices along the way.

A note about Chaste: There are no romantic thread in this. It's very chaste.

How to Survive at the End of the World Book 2 by R.C. Joshua

Introduction

"How to Survive at the End of the World Book 2" is the second installment in R.C. Joshua's LitRPG Apocalypse series. This novel continues to explore the post-apocalyptic world established in the first book, blending elements of traditional storytelling with game-like mechanics characteristic of the LitRPG genre.

Series Context

As the second book in the series, this installment builds upon the foundation laid in the first book. The series falls within the LitRPG Apocalypse subgenre, which combines post-apocalyptic settings with game-like progression systems. This unique blend allows for a narrative that explores survival in a devastated world while incorporating elements familiar to gamers and fans of role-playing games.

Plot Analysis

The ongoing struggle for survival in a world ravaged by an unspecified catastrophic event
Character progression through a game-like system, possibly involving skill acquisition and level advancement
Challenges that test the protagonist's resourcefulness and adaptability
Encounters with other survivors, potentially leading to the formation of alliances or conflicts

The title's emphasis on "How to Survive" suggests that the book may offer a strategic approach to navigating the post-apocalyptic world, possibly providing readers with insights into survival techniques within the context of the story.

Character Development

Protagonist: Likely a character who continues to develop their skills and abilities, adapting to the challenges of the post-apocalyptic world. Their growth is probably tied closely to the game-like progression system inherent in LitRPG narratives.

Supporting Characters: May include allies who join the protagonist's group, each with unique skills that contribute to survival. These characters likely face their own challenges and development arcs.

Antagonists: Could range from hostile survivor groups to environmental threats, each presenting unique challenges that drive the narrative and character growth.

The character development in this book is likely to focus on how individuals adapt and evolve in response to the extreme circumstances of a post-apocalyptic world, with their growth reflected in both their personal journeys and their progression within the game-like system.

Themes

Drawing from the conventions of both post-apocalyptic fiction and LitRPG, "How to Survive at the End of the World Book 2" likely explores several key themes:

Survival and Resourcefulness: The core theme of the book, as suggested by the title, is likely the exploration of what it takes to survive in a world where civilization has collapsed.

Adaptation and Growth: Characters must adapt to new challenges, with their personal growth mirrored in the game-like progression system.

Community and Isolation: The formation of new social structures and the psychological impact of isolation are common themes in post-apocalyptic fiction.

Moral and Ethical Dilemmas: The breakdown of societal norms often leads to complex moral questions about survival and humanity.

Hope and Rebuilding: Despite the bleak setting, the narrative may explore themes of hope and the potential for rebuilding society.

Genre Fit and Literary Elements

"How to Survive at the End of the World Book 2" fits squarely within the post-apocalyptic and LitRPG genres. It likely employs literary devices common to both, such as:

Detailed descriptions of survival techniques and scavenging
Game-like interfaces describing character stats and skills
Vivid portrayals of a devastated landscape
Internal monologues reflecting on the changed world and the character's place within it

The combination of these elements creates a unique reading experience that appeals to fans of both traditional post-apocalyptic fiction and gaming narratives.

Reception and Impact

The impact of the book may be assessed by its contribution to the genre, potentially offering:

A fresh perspective on survival in a post-apocalyptic setting
Innovative use of game mechanics within a narrative context
Exploration of themes relevant to contemporary concerns about societal collapse and resilience

Conclusion

"How to Survive at the End of the World Book 2" by R.C. Joshua appears to be a compelling addition to the LitRPG Apocalypse genre. By blending elements of post-apocalyptic fiction with game-like progression systems, the novel likely offers readers a unique perspective on survival and personal growth in a devastated world.

While specific details about the plot and characters are limited, the book's premise and genre conventions suggest a narrative rich in tension, strategic thinking, and character development. For fans of both post-apocalyptic fiction and LitRPG, "How to Survive at the End of the World Book 2" promises an engaging exploration of survival, adaptation, and the human spirit in the face of overwhelming odds.

As the series continues to unfold, it will be interesting to see how R.C. Joshua develops the world, characters, and themes introduced in this and the previous volume. The combination of survival strategies, character progression, and the exploration of a post-apocalyptic landscape offers a multifaceted narrative that can appeal to a wide range of readers interested in speculative fiction and gaming-inspired storytelling.

How to Survive at the End of the World: 2
Sean makes it to the next stage in the race for the remaining power of Earth, and he's competing with greedy Offworlders, namely Eike, whom he bashed heads with in the previous book. Sean continues to advance his skills (not as many stat dumps in this book) and meets new and interesting people. Unfortunately, he also goes through the grinder, growing harder and less shinier as a result. This book is a roller coaster and ends on something of a bittersweet note. Don't read this without having the next one ready to go!

This book could really use a proof reader.
But that’s the only thing that bothered me about it. The story is catchy and engaging and I’m really hyped for book number 3.

Terrific Story - Excellent Sequel

The series takes on a personality of it’s own in this installment that separated it from the other pretty good system apocalypse books I’ve read recently in a really positive way. I’m excited to see where the series goes from here and am hoping the author continues doing the afterwords at the end in a similar style, I found it unique and interesting to see some of your thought process.

Book two

Boy is the MC overpowered. But in a good way that I like.
I like that he can kill bad people and not end up in a dark corner rocking back and forth while crying about being a murderer. (One of the best qualities.)
There are some mistakes scattered through the book. I'll post what I found on Goodreads.
If you're interested know that book three is being written on Royalroad.

This book was a bit darker than the first book. Not all the way through, so I wouldn't call it grimdark, but it definitely had a couple of shocking moments. I started the book feeling comfortable and having a good time, but by the mid-point it was brought home to me that anything could happen. That drove the tension through the roof.

The pace was fast with plenty of action, but character growth was not neglected. Sean had it rough, and he needs a break. I hope he gets one in the next book.

Great!

I enjoyed this one immensely. The main character did some growing and you can see the trauma getting to him. He got dark... like easy to make him unlikable dark... but when you see the context, it's understandable. Probably even appropriate. He's strung out, highly stressed and human. I really liked the progression. Good book.

I still enjoyed this one, but I see you eyeing up the grimdark, dude. Don’t do it! Also what’s with the mystic pong shit, talk about an anti-climax. Mostly goes under ‘enjoy’, though, the first half in particular.

Great continuation! I love this authors style of snarky humor lol. I’ll have to check out his other books, but I’m off to read book 3!!! Can’t wait to read about what’s next after what happens on the bus!

Excellent again

I know it was hard, and it gets harder still. But you are succeeding. Your story is compelling. Your 1500-2000 theory is paying serious dividends. Cant wait to see where you go from here.

entertaining and disappointing

This book had some good points. Plenty of action. The crafting elements were underwhelming and the end was frankly a let down. Not terrible but not great.

The story went from good to great in this book. The first book had a lot of the standard set up, but this one really took off and went in fun directions, including a cool ending.

Very much looking forward to the next and final book in the trilogy.

lighthearted and fun

This is not an overly deep character building story. But unlike many in this genre you want the main character to succeed. And he’s not overly op or annoying.

Good mix of humor, jenky bs, underdog story, but also realistic in difficulty and depression. Not my favorite story or the best at the categories I mentioned but still enjoyable

This turned out okay. I think I can leave this where it ended.

It cleared stuff up for me, and I don't really care for the other unresolved issues.

A very enjoyable continuation to the story. Sean’s shenanigans with the System and his class still make me chuckle. It’s a fun read and I’m looking forward to the next one.
