Murder Breeds Magic

All power comes with a price. In a world where magic is transferred by the act of killing another, Myddrin stands above the rest. Having accidentally killed the most powerful mage in all of existence, Myddrin now lives a peaceful life in isolation. But there is no such thing as peace in the land of Otor. War calls. The voices of the dead haunt him, and there is nowhere to hide.

Cursed with the deathly taint of magic, young Will must seek acceptance among the Knights of Aen. There, he must learn to touch the otherside, control his abilities, and decide for himself what is right, and what is wrong.

Tvora’s soul is broken. The price of vengeance was her sanity. Her companions help her keep a tenuous grasp on herself, but with the urgent need to absorb enough magic to sustain them, she is pushed to choose a side in the upcoming war. The question remains, will she choose the right one?

My complete review is published at Grimdark Magazine.

Soul Cage imagines a world where magic is powered by souls and transmitted through death. This new dark fantasy by Australian indie author L.R. Schulz is equal parts exciting and thought-provoking.

Soul Cage is told from three third-person perspectives, starting with the legendary Myddrin, who had once killed the most dominant mage in the land but has now retreated from the world. Myddrin lives a secluded life as he deals with his inner demons, in both a literal and figurative sense.

My favorite character is Will, a talented and possibly neurodivergent boy who sees the world in terms of unique patterns. Will wishes to protect others by becoming a Knight of Aen, developing his magical gifts to control and enhance his powers.

Finally, Tvora is a broken warrior on the verge of losing her sanity amidst the oppressive squalor of the fighting pits. All three protagonists experience great character arcs in Soul Cage, with Tvora’s development being perhaps the most satisfying of all as she struggles to choose sides in an ensuing war.

Notwithstanding L.R. Schulz’s excellent character work, for me the highlight of Soul Cage is the magic system. Souls are the source of magical power, and they can only be taken by killing others:

“A storm of intangible globes flowed from the corpse…He felt power, raw, unimaginable power. It coursed through his veins, centred in his chest. A power born only through death.”

One of the most fascinating magical abilities in Soul Cage is the power to summon beastly apparitions. More souls lead to greater power, including the ability to summon larger apparitions such as the monstrous image-dragons.

L.R. Schulz deals with universal themes of freedom, belonging, and finding one’s purpose in life. Religion also plays an important role throughout Soul Cage. The darkest elements of the book deal with the abuse of faith that can lead to subjugation of others.

Soul Cage’s focus on the collection of souls and its societal implications reminds me a bit of the great Russian classic, Dead Souls, by Nikolai Gogol. However, the harvesting of souls is taken literally in L.R. Schulz’s new book.

Schulz adeptly balances internal and external conflicts throughout the novel, especially pertaining to the trapped souls themselves who haunt their keepers as they struggle for freedom:

“I don’t just want the voices to stop. I want to dominate them.”

L.R. Schulz’s prose is compulsively readable, gripping the reader from the opening page. Although I found the middle part of the book to be overly repetitive, Schulz kept me flipping through the pages to find out what happens next.

Overall, I am pleased to recommend Soul Cage to dark fantasy fans looking for an innovative magic system within a well-realized, character-driven story. Soul Cage is Book One of L.R. Schulz’s new Soulbreaker series and will be released on May 28, 2024.

Where do I start with this book...

Soul Cage is not just a side project for me. This was a story which had been brewing in that dark pit of my imagination for years. I just needed to find the time to craft the right charaters to fit into this wild world of death and magic I had dreamt up. Well, now I've done it!

In truth, I have absolutely no idea how this book will be recieved. It tackles some tough themes including neurodivergence, addiction and also mental health. I've re-written the story more times than I can count, all so I can hopefully do these difficult topics justice and weave a story that both thrills and horrifies at the same time.

What I do know, however, is that I've given it my absolute all and left no stone unturned. I've given my blood, my sweat, my tears and even my soul to create the best book I am capable of. If A King's Radiance and The Sun Prince were my first two born baby boys (sorry any potential future children) then Soul Cage would be the baby girl I always wanted. The golden child. The father's favourite.

I really hope you all enjoy it, and if not, then that's okay! There's a book out there for everyone :)

4.5 stars (rounded up)

In Soul Cage, L.R. Schulz gives Sanderson a run for his money with his incredibly wild imagination and unbelievably cool yet terrifying soul-transference magic system. Darkly disturbing yet casually diverse and full of heart, this first instalment in the Soulbreaker series will sing to the souls of any and all dark fantasy lovers.

Through the perspectives of three very compelling and uniquely diverse characters, we are transported into the bleak world of Otor, where murder breeds magic. The most powerful mage in existence, who also happens to be a drunkard and drug addict; a neurodivergent young man training to become a strong mage in the ranks of the Knights of Aen; and a soul-broken woman on a revenge path, seeking enough power to sustain the magical apparitions of her dead friends. War is calling, and the course of history lies in their hands, whether they like it or not.

Now, after loving the first two instalments in Schulz’s debut series, A King’s Radiance and The Sun Prince, I had almost unfairly high expectations going into Soul Cage. And somehow, he blew them all out of the water with ease. I mean, first a sun-based magic system and now a soul-based magic system that comes at the price of your sanity and eventually your life… where does this man’s imagination end?!

Still, a cool magic system does not immediately make a good story, and the premise of Soul Cage could easily have floundered in the hands of a lesser author. But fortunately, Schulz executes his vision with masterful skill. Through the eyes of these three wildly different protagonists, we are organically introduced to both the most awe-inspiring wonders and terrifying horrors of this world and the magic system, resulting in an almost uncomfortably intimate approach to the storytelling that kept me in a chokehold from start to finish.

Unlike many other multi-POV fantasies, Soul Cage doesn’t feature a single uninteresting perspective. Every time I thought I enjoyed one of them over the others, Schulz would throw another exciting twist or turn my way which made me reassess my opinions and feelings all over again. Ultimately, I think Will was the most endearing and compelling character for me, and I loved how authentically his neurodivergence was written into the story without making it his entire personality. But there was truly also so much to dig into with Myddrin and Tvora (and her unconventional animal companions), as they are both haunted by their pasts and have to face some brutal inner demons.

These characters all have their own unique virtues and vices, and I especially enjoyed how Schulz didn’t shy away from exploring the darker realms of the human mind through their harrowing journeys. See, carrying more souls might mean being more powerful, but the haunting voices of the dead’s souls add a psychological weight that not many can handle for long without breaking. Themes of mental health, loss, the daily battle of addiction, neurodivergence, corruption, morality, and faith are beautifully woven into the narrative, adding thought-provoking layers of nuance and complexity that you can ponder on for days to come.

And what’s more, all that rich character work and deep themework doesn’t even come at the cost of an absolutely riveting and pulse-pounding plot. Yes, there are plenty of moments of introspection and quiet internal battles, but Soul Cage features just as many epic and cinematic action sequences where the cool-factor just jumps through the roof. Bloody murder, souls violently slamming into bodies, people crumbling under the mental weight of carrying their new-found power, and soul-fueled beastly apparitions (image-hawks, bears, and panthers, anyone?) joining the fights; each new turn of the page just filled me with new levels of shock and wonder.

There were maybe a couple of chapters in the middle section where the pacing felt a bit tedious, but at the same time I also really appreciated that these characters’ development wasn’t rushed. Each of their individual arcs felt realistically messy and frustrating, which only made their journeys more satisfying and powerful to me. Plus, even when the pacing slowed down a bit, there was still always a looming sense of dread and inescapable tension from all the political scheming and unravelling of twisted lore and history, which kept me turning the pages without me even noticing it.

Schulz has truly outdone himself with Soul Cage, and I honestly think he deserves to be up there with the greats of the genre. If you are not afraid to dive into a story that will challenge you mentally and emotionally, while also filling you with a deep sense of escapist wonder and suspense, then you have to check out this refreshingly diverse and beautifully character-driven dark fantasy. What a wild ride, I need more!

I received an eARC in exchange for an honest review.

A devastating magic system that brings the nature of humanity into question through murder, religion and unlikely heroes.

When a magic system relies on murder to access magical abilities, a dark fantasy is born with plenty of consequences and emotional damage. Soul Cage by L.R. Schulz does exactly that while taking readers through action packed scenes, themes of addiction, grief, neurodivergent representation, religious beliefs and political machinations.

As the story centers around a conflict between the land of Otor and a power hungry mage it follows three povs in the third perspective. First is Myddrin, once a teacher and now accidental hero of Otor who lives a life of isolation burdened by grief, addiction and the voices of the dead now trapped in his cage. Second is Will, a young man who sees the world differently than those around him, resulting in a life of ridicule by his peers and a past hidden even from himself. Finally there’s Tvora, a soul broken, feared by all and trapped in a vicious cycle of vengeance. She dreams of a peaceful life as she strives to maintain her companions and sanity, only the path she takes to achieve her goals will make her question everything.

The standout aspect for me was the magic system and its impacts on the people within the world. As the magic system relies on murder in order to obtain magic and power, it creates a grim world and a dark exploration of the characters trapped in a state of survival. Each of the main characters' journeys and their individual struggles was captivating. Despite the tragedies they’re faced with and the ever present high stakes, their character developments are gripping.

There are also plenty of themes explored throughout their perspectives including grief, addiction, isolation, freedom, vengeance, faith and sacrifice which are all handled beautifully. I can’t forget to mention the struggle for sanity as the consequences of the magic system come at a high price, with the souls of the dead vying for power of the host's body. I loved the psychological battles the characters go through and its impacts on the story.

It doesn’t stop there though as L.R. Schulz showcases his skill with emotional damage, mystery, excellent action scenes and satisfying payoffs. I was also surprised to find religious influences, intriguing cultures and tantalizing world history.

One aspect I would have liked a bit more polishing on is the pacing. While this is a mix of medium to fast, there were scenes that began to feel out of place by comparison. Mind you, those scenes do hold importance to the characters arcs and the plot, but it did impact my overall reading pace.

All that being said, L.R. Schulz has created something special here and the potential of what’s to come has me eager for book 2. I am fascinated by the world and magic system and the more I think about this book, the more I appreciate what the author has created.

I’d highly recommend this for fans of Brandon Sanderson, unique magic systems, dark explorations of humanity and enjoy intricate depth within stories.

4.5 stars I seldom read books that really immerse me nowadays but this one gripped me and dragged me in deep from the beginning to the end. So good! The plot is fast and writing engaging and easy to follow.

The magic system is super interesting and dark. Magic is acquired by killing someone and then obtaining their soul(s), which over time accumulate. The more souls, the more powerful the mage. The magic then creates images in the colour correlating to the mage's own eye colour. Only limitation is a mage's imagination and how powerful they are. But if the mage has no control, the soul within their "soul cage" as it is called will break them, making them a soul-broken and the only way out of that is death. Those with magic are called Knights of Aen and who gets to be knight is strictly regulated by passing rituals. One is forbidden to kill or use magic with the intention to harm or kill.

The book follows three characters: Myddrin, Will and Tvora. All three was actually easy to follow. When it comes to multi-POV there's usually one or two (depending on how many there are in total) I care less for. I especially rooted for Will and Myddrin. Myddrin is broken my memories and tormented by the souls trapped inside him. He's turned to drug and drink in attempt to silence them. But when dark forces once again threaten the world, he's forced back to join the war.

Will is a neurodivergent young boy who dreams of joining the knights and to protect people. When he finds out he has powers before even going through the passing ritual his life is turned upside down.
Struggling to fit in and be accepted, he must now quickly learn to control his abilities before the souls consume and break him.

Tvora is a soul-broken, but still has her soul. She has three magic companions keeping her company and her together. But they are fueled by magic and in search of power and in a war she must choose which side she is on.

While Tvora's chapters were interesting I did not empathize as much with her struggles as I did with Myrddin's and Will's. All three POV characters have magic abilities. It would have been interesting to have a character who did not have the power and see how mages were viewed from someone on the "outside".

Highly recommend! I've had the author's other books on and off on my radar but after reading this one they have definitely moved up the list!

The driving force behind L.R. Schulz’s fantastic Soul Cage is drawing to mind a classic bit from a Treehouse of Horror episode of The Simpsons:

“To gain magic, you must kill someone.”

“Oh, that’s bad.”

“You will gain all of their souls to make you more powerful.”

“That’s good.”

“The souls threaten to drive you mad.”

“That’s bad.”

“But the more souls you gain, the more powerful you become.”

“That’s good.”

“If you allow the souls to overcome you, you will become irreparably soul-broken.”

“…”

“That’s bad.”

“Can I go now?”

In crafting one of the most unique and consequential magic systems I’ve seen put to paper, Schulz has laid the foundations for a true epic, one that focuses marvelously on the pursuit of power, and the price one must pay once they’ve obtained it.

In the land of Otor, former educator Myddrin becomes one of the most powerful beings in all of existence after accidentally killing the land’s most powerful and infamous mage and taking all of his souls. Ten years later, he is constantly haunted by the souls of the dead, finding relief only in alcohol and drugs in his isolation. War approaches, however, and his powers are needed, whether he wants them to be or not. Meanwhile, a former student of Myddrin’s named Will becomes an apprentice of the magic-wielding Knights of Aen, but he is looked upon with suspicion when he is able to use magic before he even becomes a Knight. And, approaching the Gracelands alongside the power-hungry emperor Carthon of the Skull Throne is Tvora, soul-broken but having reclaimed her sanity…and seeking revenge.

The consequences of gaining and using magic is what drives Soul Cage forward. Being a powerful mage means having taken innumerable lives, and Schulz masterfully navigates the questions of morality surrounding the system. The souls of the dead constantly haunting the mage, bringing them closer and closer to the brink of madness the more they use their magic, is a fascinating parallel to one’s own conscience, as well as when one becomes soul-broken and can no longer be reached. Likewise, the character arcs of Myddrin and Will illuminate this perfectly, with Will constantly acting as a moral compass and not wanting to kill, while Myddrin is overwrought with both the sheer number of souls within him, and the survivor’s guilt of having been brought to kill.

The plot is otherwise simple in its approach, but masterful in its execution. The impending war brought by Carthon serves as the backdrop to the tale, with political maneuvering, ecclesiastical deceit, and back-stabbing playing a large role as well. Schulz weaves these plot threads extremely well, and I was always eager to know what would happen next. He grips you right from the start, opening the book with the question, “Why do people kill each other?” As the plot progressed, I was constantly thinking back to that question, because the characters’ individual reasoning for why they kill informs so much about their goals: Protection. Power. Revenge. Love. Because they must. Because they have no choice. Each character has their own motivation to kill, and that brings so much depth to the story just by asking a single question that most other books wouldn’t even spare a second thought to.

Overall, Soul Cage is a blast. Deeply thought-provoking, engrossing right from the start, with one of my favorite magic systems in quite some time. This is gonna be a series to watch out for.

Soul Cage is an epic fantasy series opener set in a world where magic is linked to the taking of another’s soul. Myddrin is a teacher who becomes the most powerful mage of his world after power literally falls onto his spear in the last war. Now after years of being tormented by the thousands of souls in his possession, he is an addict and drunkard when war has come again and he is called upon to fulfill his duty. Meanwhile, Will is a young neurodivergent boy who dreams of becoming a mage knight as he learns of the cost and its burden. On the opposite side of the war is Tvora, a soul-broken woman who needs to consume more and more souls to maintain the constructs that make up her friends.

Told from three perspectives, the book offers a rounded view of its world and the people within it. The author has built a world rich in history and steeped in tradition and conflict. Especially of note is its magic system where magic is fueled by the souls of the murdered while magic is manifested as objects or creatures, similar to Green Lantern powers. The story offers imaginative and intense action set-pieces that are grounded by deliberate character work.

My favorite character is definitely Will, but that’s pretty much given since I always love the classic young hero archetype. I did appreciate that he was neurodivergent and how important that part of himself was to his story arc and not treated as a quirk or novelty and eventually forgotten. His challenges in relating with others and how his own mind works is just utterly relatable and makes his journey as a knight in training that much more relatable.

I also really liked Myddrin, who is arguably the main protagonist of this book. He is the most understandable of the characters and whose motivation is the most compelling. He had unwanted power thrust upon him and is tormented by the burden of the many souls he is forced to carry. Hence, he has made it his mission to discover a way to end magic and thus free all the souls that mages carry in their soul cages. He struggles with sobriety which impedes on his ability to carry out his noble mission, and I can’t help but root for this mess of a man.

Tvora had me the most conflicted. She was probably the most interesting character with her broken magic and the three sentient animal companions she manifests, but I just could not quite get behind her. Her actions sort of make sense for her motivation, but very antithetical to who she is. I guess that was the point, but I was as conflicted with her as she was with herself. I was eventually won over by her turning point of sorts.

What I do want to see is a bit more depth in the prose which I do find to be too simple, as I do want my prose to be more complex in my fantasies. Otherwise, both the story and worldbuilding are already great and it’s just the delivery that I want more out of. I will be sure to read the sequel as I want to know where the story goes.

Murder Breeds Magic

Soul Cage is a brilliant first iteration to the Soulbreaker series by L.R Schultz. The captivating tale immerses you in a world where morality is tested and the consequences of a person's actions shape their destinies. There are 3 POVs Myddrin, Will and Tvora which Schulz uses to create a gripping narrative that explores the depth of human struggles and the pursuit of salvation amidst looming conflict.

Soul Cage sets the bar high for future instalments offering a captivating blend of action, intrigue, magic, adventure and character driven story.

I need more fantasy books like this!

Often magic systems are very similar in the fantasy genre, but this was unique, creative and made me thankful for not living in a world where people use this power.
The more souls you have, the greater your magic - yes, that means you have to kill others to become more powerful. There's also the chance to turn into a broken, when your mind is not strong enough to keep the soul's voices in check.

Over the course of the story we follow three characters - Myddrin, Will and Tvora. All are well written and interesting. I'm looking forward to reading more about each character in the next book.
What I really enjoyed was not knowing at some point who the good guys actually were. Thanks to a few twists, turns and reveals you are not sure what to think.

My favorite is Will. He sees everything in patterns and is one of the most loveable MCs I've ever read about.

So far my favorite book of 2024🧡

So let me start with the fact that I loved all of Luke's books, and Soul Cage was no exception!

The most special thing for me is he creates characters that ALWAYS resonate with you and feel close emotionally. And that comes from the fact that he makes them perfectly flawed, and you grow with them along the journey.

An intriguing story in a world where magic comes from the souls of the people you killed….and the more souls you absorb, the more powerful you become.

Witnessing the story from three POV's :

Myddrin - after an attack on Otor and accidentally killing the most powerful sorcerer, he succumbs to isolation and his vices in order to survive all that burden that comes with such power.

Will—a future Knight of Aen in training and struggling with all the bad things happening around him.

Tvora - not many can survive after being soul broken… but although with a high price, she succeeded and, along with her companions, she has a mission of her own that pushes her to a place she starts to question herself.

I loved all the characters to be honest, but the most intricate one for me was Will.

He is a remarkable mix of strange, smart, brave in his unique way and the way he deals with the obstacles and grief by analyzing, learning and getting better was so intriguing to follow.

And I loved the way the book ended and how you think you have the answers, but the rug is pulled from under you, and suddenly, you have to of questions and what will follow😂👌

In short, I want book two now!😂😂😂🙈

The start of an epic dark fantasy series that has you gripped with it's masterful worldbuilding, unique magic systems and emotive characters.
This isn't just a battle of good and evil, it's a glimpse into the complexities of humanity and morality, and a journey of redemption.
It's a dark fantasy adventure following 3 main POV, each with tragic backstories and intertwined fates. I felt so invested in the characters and rooting for their bravery, and the magic transference of souls is fascinating.

This book has a little of everything with reluctant heroes, damaged warriors, neurodivergent MC, vivid battles, plots of revenge, chosen one fighting for good...
It's an epic journey that doesn't overboard you with detail, but gives you enough to follow seamlessly, connect with the characters and leave you desperate for more.
Very excited to how this series progresses.

Quite possibly my favourite book of 2024 !

The story is broken up into three different point of views and everyone was so different but I loved seeing how each character grew within the novel.
(Will’s story slowly destroyed me but can’t wait to see what he does next ! )

In Schulz‘s Soul Cage, we follow three central characters, each dealing with their magic in a different way.
Myddrin had the title of most powerful thrust upon him, and is coping the best way he knows how, which is honestly not very well. He is a perfectly broken man trying to do what he must for the good of all.
Will is learning to accept and control his magic. While not explicitly stated, Will reads as neurodivergent. His neurodivergent characteristics were done well as they were not overly exaggerated or the sole focus of his character but just perfectly part of who Will is.
Tvora is looking to gaining more magic to sustain her friends that keep her alive. Being soulbroken has lead to a loneliness that she is determined to overcome and the eternal/external battles she faces to get there lead her down an extraordinary character path.
I could write multiple paragraphs on each of the three central characters alone but to avoid spoilers I will just say that I found myself attached and craving more from even the side character. Not that they overshadowed our mains but even with such a large cast, each had amazingly distinctive personalities that I found engaging and enjoyed the interactions. My heart soared and ached with the characters because they were so brilliantly done.
Now, the magic system where murder is the way to power. Think Highlander but then expand it even further. The souls within grant the wielders the ability to conjure image items from the otherside. Each soul added to one’s cage comes with the risk of not being able to overcome the souls’ call to be freed, thus breaking the wielder. The imagings of the mages seems to be limitless as long as they can maintain control. The writing is beautifully descriptive, giving us battles full of fantastic imagery. The colors, the images, the flow of power, the tactics of battle…Schulz delivered on every front.
Schulz has an amazing ability to draw a reader into an unfamiliar world with his characters and his lush descriptions. I cannot wait to see where we go in the next Soulbreaker book!

2024 has been epic. I had no idea what to expect from Soul Cage, but even without reading any of L. R. Schulz's books, I knew this would be good based off what I heard of the author.

The novel hops right into the magic system, one by which mages gain power by claiming the souls of others. Entire civilizations are built on the hierarchies formed when mages gain enhanced power to either govern, defend, or both. Unfortunately, each soul pushes a mage closer to their breaking point, when the souls grow too numerous to control and they overwhelm the internal defenses of their host. At this point, the host becomes "soul-broken," whereby all sorts of bizarre things happen.

The plot here is fairly simple: a dark lord is amassing a mighty army to topple the kingdom of the Gracelands, which holds the Church and the Church's order of Knights. The dark lord, Carthon, wishes to expand his rule from the Harrows, a veritable wasteland of soul-hunters, and he's united several kingdoms to lead the mightiest army the world's seen.

Against him rise a drunken, regretful mage, a neurodivergent Knight-in-training, and the squabbling members of the Church. It's a simple premise but executed with intriguing, flawed characters you can't help but root for the more you understand their backstories, their regrets, and their hopes for redemption. Couple that with a fun magic system that deepens all the way to the end, tight pacing, and battles of epic scale...you're sure to enjoy the read.

My thanks to L. R. Schulz for this wonderful novel. It gave me chills, thrills, and more than one laugh. It made me cherish the world's beauty, ache over its loss, and ultimately, reflect on what I draw hope from. If that's not all you want in a fantasy novel, I don't know what is.

ARC provided by author for honest review! As I’ve said in a previous review and hold ever more true, Mr. Schulz has created an environment of obsession! Can’t get enough of his writing because every character, every scene, every world he creates is thought out and executed with the utmost perfection. I absolutely fell in love with this book from page 1. This is a darker side to fantasy with themes of murder, special needs, and a completely unique magic system I’ve never come across before. You can tell the magic system is very thought out and executed very very well. There are also themes in this book that really hit home with me as well, such as belonging, kindness, and standing up for those who can’t stand for themselves. This book has so many good scenes and plot points, I’m constantly on my toes wondering what’s going to happen next. We have 3 main POVs in this book and each one is so interesting and easy to connect with on different levels and for different reasons. The final few chapters gripped me and wouldn’t let go! The battle sequences and character work near the end was absolutely stunning! I can’t wait for the next book in this series! I hate that I’m left with so many questions, but look forward to the answers! This book was an absolute stunner and I’m going to say it again, Luke Schulz is a master at his craft. I’ll even go as far to say, he’s severely underrated at this point and is a top up and comer in the fantasy genre!

Hmmm. Lots of people saying this is a unique magic system etc. For me it’s very reminiscent of souls like games, the magic system being a version of something I have played a million times over. It’s nice to read it in action though and beautifully done.
This is a heavily character driven plot with a triple POV of three characters. Each character has their own demons and are trying to muddle through life with said demons. An interesting portrayal of Neurodivergence, an exploration of addiction and some gentle wandering through mental ill health. Yet for me this book is missing a little sparkle. The pacing in the beginning and at the end felt faster and smoother than a chunk of the middle - which felt more of a slog (to me).
Overall beautiful writing and a fresh (ish) slant on fantasy. With just a little more work on the pacing…and had there been more depth into to why I should care about Tvora’s character, well, I might have invested in the overall plot more heavily. I will remember Will and Myddrin - yet her, not so much.
Just my thoughts for what they are worth, if I’m going to invest my time in serious writing I want to care or hate all of the characters equally. And this is serious writing done well.

though the book is written simply, no over the top words, just straight forward writing. It was exciting from beginning to end. It’s fast paced and I found the characters and their personalities strong for the most part. The magic system is new to me and It is interesting. A good read.

Okay, so I really wasn't impressed with the opening few chapters, the magic system didn't feel convincing and was far too much the initial focus, plus the backstory of one of the main characters, Will, was taken straight out of Brandon Sanderson's Stormlight Archive (Shallan): Nervous, insecure, killed own mother in self-defence but then forgot all about it, unloved by an angry father as a consequence, love for drawing, can bring imagination to life with the help of his art, etc etc. Sound familiar?? :(
I'm so glad I persevered though, as the book just got better and better, leading up to a battle of grand proportions. Having three main characters, hence three parallel POVs and interwoven storylines, is nothing new, but Schulz manages to create and develop very memorable and troubled personalities, each struggling with their own insecurities, guilt, grief, and other internal demons (as well as a whole host of inhabiting souls who vye for attention). I was equalled intrigued by all three, each giving a unique perspective on events: Myddrin, accidentally finding himself the most powerful man alive but wanting none of it; Will, an autistic young man, with a complex past and unable to live up to his own aspirations; and Tvora, soul-broken, and siding with the enemy in a bid to find inner peace and meaning.
The magic system, as it turns out, works surprisingly well, and comes with a price, the lust for power and the need to kill, along with the constant and growing threat of insanity. This itself introduces all kinds of ethical and psychological elements into the tale, and results in dark secrets and strained loyalties.
The fight scenes are well described, imaginative and brutal, with the use of solid objects and creatures, some collosal in size, conjured up from the "otherside"(via one's souls), working far better than I originally expected, and adding an interesting additional layer to the combat.
Whilst the ending of the books sets up a sequel, this book would serve equally well as a standalone, though with one or two loose ends.
If you want an exciting page-turner, thought-provoking, and with memorable characters, then I would definitely recommend this book. I give it 4.5/5.

Murderers roam the land, cursed and broken souls fight to survive, and every power comes at a devastating price. War rages across the realm, betrayals fester within the walls, and soul hunters prowl the grounds beyond. In this twisted world, the line between survival and damnation is razor-thin, and every choice could lead to ruin or unimaginable strength. Danger lurks at every turn. Who will survive?

Soul Cage is the first book in an epic fantasy series set in a twisted dark world brimming with a unique magic system, captivating characters, and an awe-inspiring setting. Prepare to be swept away into a tale ulike any other.

In this book, some people will do whatever it takes to gain power and even kill to grow their soul count, a concept I find absolutely thrilling. The more souls they have, the more powerful they will be and the more badass magic they will be able to do. You'll follow three different protagonists in 3rd person narrative, each with vastly different lives, whose stories are equally captivating and will keep you hooked from start to finish.

I highly recommend this if you are into dark fantasy with captivating world building and a fantastic magic system.

** I received this as an ARC from the author, here’s my honest review.

Soul Cage initially wrapped me in with its novel magic system - the murderer who lands the killing blow gets the power of the soul of the victim, along with the souls they’d taken from others. That power is used to form solidified images from the user’s imagination but draw too much and the voices of the souls within you may steal your mind and body.

I feel like I empathized with each of the three main characters, seeing bits of myself and their struggles while I was reading. I have an autistic teenager so hearing Will’s perspective resonated with my own experiences. Myddrin’s role as “accidental hero” and desperately trying to work out how to survive himself, the powers he never wanted, as well as grief and loss was very compelling. Tvora’s arc of the story was probably my favorite. I was never quite sure what she was going to decide until the end.

I’m very much looking forward to the sequel! The story leaves off at a place of transformation and revelation, ripe for a follow up. This was my first book by the author but I’m absolutely certain I’m going to track down the others! If you’re looking for compelling characters, an innovative magic system, and a new world with a hidden history to dive into - I’d recommend it highly.

I liked this story quite much, since it's refreshing and it keeps your occupied from the start to the end.
The concept of soul cages and magic coming from the power of souls, amazing.
Murder, sacrifice, and impending war. Doom is coming, but whose is it?

This novel has three POVs, and each is more intriguing than the last.

Myddrin is an alcoholic insanely powerful mage with a lot of regret and misery.
Will who's a young Knight to be dreams to follow in his families footsteps, but he might be too weak. Or maybe something else ails him?
Tvora is a woman whose soul cage has broken, which usually means the end, but something lets her hang on, be it the power of friendship or the search for revenge.

This is an easy five-star read for me since it's well written, characters are interesting (Tvora's at the top for me), and you get invested in their stories almost instantly.
Can't wait for the next instalments.

I cannot praise this book enough, the plot is gripping fast paced, the world is fascinating and the magic system is brutal. But I think the thing I found most impressive is Schulz's ability to make every characters pain and emotion so tangible. I felt along with them and loved and suffered and grew. What a unique ability to craft such a deeply visceral experience.

Another 5 star book this year! This books magic system is one of my favourites I've ever read about.

The story is awesome and ends on a cliff hanger, can't wait for book 2.

The characters are well fleshed out, and Will being my favourite reminded me at times of my child who's on the spectrum too!

If you like heartbreak, violence, different but amazing magic systems, well flesh out characters, and more violence, then this is for you!

Dear Luke,

One of my most closest and best friends, I commend you on this feat of a story. THIS is how you write a story. THIS is what stories should be like again. YOU are one of the few authors that I’ve come to know over the past two years from the beginning and I want you to know that you inspire me to do better. Every. Single. Freaking. Day.

Like Myddrin, who struggled with holding onto hope and going back to the drinking and smoking that eased the demons in his head, I too struggled with letting fears and doubts soil my life. And I pray that I can make them cease.

Like Will, I aspired to show my family I want to be something. To show them that I can do it and be brave and not let bullies plant my face in the dirt, people label me as a failure, and become a confident person I can be proud of.

Like Tvora, craving some things I always wanted to have like she with souls, lonely with only my siblings for friends, only coming to realize that it’s not power she wanted, it’s that connection. That connection with the friends who love me…for me. Her friendship with Lucia, Cecco, and Gowther proved to me that I’m not really alone.

Like Olive, standing alone in the vast woods away from the world with only her songs to comfort her, I too only had books to comfort me when all the responsibilities I had to have were waiting for me on the battlefield and I didn’t want to face them. I was too afraid. But, as a princess, she grew confidence in her soldiers, and I have become an inspiration to others when I didn’t even know it.

While this book had some spelling errors, which I can’t remember where, that doesn’t matter. Thank you my dear friend for your kind words and for letting me read Soul Cage. I’m so proud of you Luke. If you want me to read more, my doors are always open.

Your Best Friend,
Lauren

4.5 stars!

In order to have power, you must have souls in thy soul cage. In order to have souls in thy soul cage, you must kill. Souls are the currency. Death is the price. The magic system is just so original!

This story is so dark, I mean right away the story just rips your soul apart in the prologue. The struggles the characters go through aren’t for the faint of heart. We have Myddrin, who was a scholar who accidentally turned into the most powerful mage in all of Otor, and to cope with it he uses drugs and drinks to deal with what he’s been dealt. Will, who’s lost all he’s known and loved to join the Knights of Aen. And last but not least Tvora who was a child when she killed a soul-hunter when he destroyed her village, and now she’s broken, she’s given into the souls inside her. I enjoyed how authentic the characters reactions were and seeing their development from start to end. The story is fast-paced and easy to read. I’m looking forward to seeing where the story will go in book two ! Definitely recommend Soul Cage . I also want to take time to thank the author for sending me the ARC ages ago, but as soon as it debuted I still bought it anyway because I KNEW this book was TOO GOOD to pass up. Well done Luke 😌.

Okay THAT ENDING! Soul Cage has everything I love in a fantasy book. Immediately starts with the action on the first chapter, takes its time to develop a unique cast of characters and a unique magic system (with a line like “souls are the currency, death is the price” it’s not surprising), and, something that’s not so common with indie books, polished and vivid prose. The writing gave it a classic feel to it that worked SO well with everything going on in the book, from the concept of how the magic works, the age old argument of nature vs nurture, and a bunch of badass characters. This will be better worded when I write my caption but overall great book🫡

It honestly shouldn’t have taken me this long to finish this book. That pacing, the action, the writing, FLAWLESS!
I blame it on so many things happening at the same time and you’ll get yourself a proper review soon enough, but honestly! This book!
