Modificatorii

Rate this book

A collection of stories in which three strange characters whose identities are guessed soon (Michel who used to write obscure predictions in verses, Jose Balsam - this one is a bit obvious, and Germain - another obvious one) guide various Frenchmen from various histories into imagining how such will or won;t be changed by doing this or that.

I had a lot of fun reading this with its superb allusions to popular sfnal themes in alt-history as well as to various authors and of course the cameos of the famous and infamous are what ultimately power the narrative.

Of the 4 stories the opening one that starts in a Nazi occupied Paris, though not the one from our history - is the longest and strongest at novella length, while the other three that deal with Hannibal vs the Romans, Joan d'Arc and Catherine the Great are shorter and vignette like but still very good.

Like with other Romanian language stuff I read recently, i wish this book would find its way in English as it would stand well against any alt-hist stuff I;ve read, and I've read lots...
