Understanding the Qur'an Today

Rate this book
The prevailing belief among Muslims is that, because the Qur'an is the Word of God and God is eternal, it follows that His Word is also eternal. The belief is based on the postulate that the Word of God must be of the same nature as God Himself. Mahmoud Hussein refutes this by showing that it contradicts the very teachings of the Qur'an. Whereas God transcends time, His Word is inscribed within time. It is not a monologue, but a living exchange, through which God reveals to His Prophet different orders of truth, weaving together the absolute and the relative, the general and the particular, the eternal and the contingent. An international bestseller, Understanding the Qur'an today offers a new perspective on one of the world's most influential texts and adds an invaluable contribution to the debate on Islam and modernity.

A rather brief but enlightening exposition of how the authors see the Qur'anic revelation as being unequivocally rooted in the historical context of the time, place, and society of the early community of believers, a perspective that can, I believe, be usefully applied to other texts viewed by their believers as divine revelation.

An enlightening tour of some of the more influential surahs of the Quran complemented by their corresponding Hadiths (tradition). I found Hussein’s ordering of chapters rather sporadic and confusing at some points, however the wealth of knowledge offered largely compensated this downfall.

My greatest takeaways were:
1) The Quran is a prime example of circumstantial revelation (religious knowledge imparted to a specific people in a specific place and specific time period).
2) One cannot glean anything from the Quran unless the reader sees its verses in an emphatic, allegorical way.
3) Mankind has advanced significantly since 600 AD when the Quran was revealed - and so must our understanding of religion!

I'm a bit... I don't know if I read the book with expectations. I was looking for a clear, kind, intepretation of the Quran and I found this book rather, 'brick-like'. Yes, bricks! It's a stoic little book that tells it as it is... I grasp and understand the writer's concept.

Then again, maybe it's me!

Virkelig verdt å lese. Nyanserte synspunkt, spennende konklusjoner, gjerne kontroversiell men perfekt for meg og min smak :) Diskutere potensielle bias, og som utfordre tolkninger som ellers e «godt» etablerte meininger hos muslimer «flest».
