It's been four decades since Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird released the very first issue of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in May 1984. Join us as we kick off a brand-new era for the Heroes in a Half Shell with two all-new short stories and a preview of what's next in the IDW comics. First, there is a new masked vigilante in New York, looking to carry on the tradition set by the Turtles themselves. Get a special prelude of the new miniseries, straight from the mind of Juni Ba (Harley Black + White + Redder; Monkey Meat). Second, a blast from the past! A brand-new tale told in a classic IDW style, featuring fan-favorite talent Paul Allor (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles vs. Street Fighter) and Andy Kuhn.
Juni is an illustrator and writer hailing from Senegal and France. His current works include the Kayin and Abeni mini series and the Monkey Meat stories both published by Kugali. He’s also a cover artist with works for Skybound and IDW. His artistic fuel is mostly based on orange juice.
3.5 stars. First story teases up Nightwatcher. Seems like and interesting premise. Next story is a fun bit where Splinter pulls the okie doke on the turtles. Kinda fun.
There are exciting times ahead for the turtles in a half shell. As a lifelong fan of the Turtles and comic books, it's a shame I haven't dove into the IDW runs. I'm really thinking of jumping in and with all the last Ronin launch, etc. It's starting to look very appealing indeed
Though the current TMNT stuff from IDW hasn't appealed as much of late, I was intrigued by the fact that Juni Ba was taking on the writing duties for a Nightwatcher-centric miniseries. Though Ba's cartooning is much more appealing to me, Andy Kuhn does a capable job on the artwork. Nightwatcher was something of an interesting novelty in the 2007 animated film, even if it's just Raph cosplaying as Batman. Hopefully Ba and Kuhn deliver something engaging to add to the ever growing TMNT mythos with their series.
This was a fun read, tied in a few different stories and artistic styles. First story introduced Nightwatcher and he seems like a cool character. It gave enough back story that I didn't feel completely lost, which was helpful, since I've not read many TMNT comics, and am definitely not up to date on them. The second story was also great, as it was in the same atmosphere as the most recent movie. Artistically, it was similar, which was a neat tie-in, and I totally read Splinter in Jackie Chan's voice...
All in all a great, quick read, and being free was even better!
Two great short stories. First in the aftermath of the mutation bomb, the Nightwatcher is out for vengeance. Then, the Turtles have tested Splinter's patients to the max. He decides they need a lesson in vigilance. He should have remembered you are never too old to stop learning. All this and great previews of things to come.
I quite liked the set up, it's just a bunch of mutants trying to make a quick buck and the Nightwatcher getting them, super simple but a very good way to set up a series.
I liked the art and the slow build up it had, when reading it the world building really pulls you in and I'm glad this got turned into a series beucase I do want more!
This whole Nightwatcher thing is kind of dumb. There's one turtle missing. Who do you think Nightwatcher is going to be? The classic story from Paul Allor is kind of fun fluff. Not a fan of Andy Kuhn's art though.
Free Comic Book Day 2024 Heft, wieder zwei Kurzgeschichten: 1 Teaser für die neue Nightwatcher-Reihe, düster, sehr gut a la The Dark Knight. Und eine nicht so fein gezeichnete Kurzgeschichte mit einer ordentlichen Prise Humor. Ganz okay
Great advertising: I have missed these guys, not being a completist since the original Eastman and Laird run. This succeeds in piquing my interest in related offerings from IDW. Great to see Editor Jamie S. Rich involved - and rooting for this publisher to keep on. Recommended.
The Juni Ba "Nightwatcher" series (his words and designs) looks interesting, but I was more entertained by the second story of Splinter brief night off from raising four teenagers. It was hilarious.
