Space! You read that and more in the first installment of the series "SHIFTERS 01: Survival is not optional."
"Shifters 01" by Kal Fulsom is a well-written, captivating sci-fi novel that kept me engaged from start to finish. Not my usual read, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. The story of the telepathic, shapeshifting Elysians and their struggle against the Zon, alongside humanity, is a gripping tale of survival and unity.
I've been wanting to read this book for a while, after seeing the author's impressive eye-catching promotional images. Once I sat down to read it, I was immediately blown away by Kal's imaginative style of writing. The flow of the story is slow, but I believe that is the purpose, because the way the story unfolds I felt myself become immersed, making me forget everything around me.
The characters are intriguing. I love the way Kal took the time to build the world (also the universe) inside the story. Shitfters 01 has an almost epic, cinematic feel to it, with certain scenes leaving you gasping for breath. I loved the way how Kal managed to carefully weave the story into our own world's mythology, very clever if I must say. (I chuckled at certain pop culture references, which also involved a quote from one of my favourite movies)
If you like books that take you on epic adventure across the cosmos, with engaging characters and immersive story arc, then this is for you.
The book offers a thrilling blend of space battles, advanced technology, and rich cultural integration as it tells the epic story of the Elysians, a once-dominant species forced to ally with humanity after their defeat by the Zon.
The narrative expertly explores themes of survival, sacrifice, and unity, drawing readers into a universe where two vastly different species merge their strengths to face a common enemy.
With its imaginative technology and the concept of life extension through reintegration, this book is a must-read for sci-fi fans who crave a fresh take on interstellar warfare and the resilience of civilizations.
If you love all things sci-fi and space battles, different species, how some are integrated into a matrix, how some species can live a very long life, especially with reintegration, although it takes 100 years to complete the process, if you like technology that we on earth and no sci-fi show has done, this is the book for you.
In this epic tale, the advanced Elysians face destruction by the invasive Zon. Their salvation lies in an unexpected alliance with humanity. A compelling story of survival, unity, and sacrifice as the two species merge to fight for their shared future across the galaxy. Gripping and thought-provoking.
The videos for this book are spectacular to say least. That is what drew me in. Those receive a resounding 5 star bump. Very well done. The story itself, not so much. The premise is the Zon have been banished into a different Galaxy by a race, forgot their name, have had enough of their garbage They are a nasty race and only live to conquer and dominate other worlds by infecting the hosts body with battle or a gaseous virus. The outcome is the same, enslavement. Their target is the Elysians. These people are eons ahead of the Zon when it comes to technology and intelligence. While that is their forte it is also their Achilles Heel. The are extremely arrogant and snobbish thinking they are the master of the galaxy. They have colonize hundreds of planets and created a massive empire of billions of inhabitants. On paper, they are unstoppable; In reality they are highly vulnerable. The Elysians are an unusual race as they can shift into any form they want to at anytime. Why? I have no idea, but it is a cool concept. Now for the execution of the tale. For me, it fell flat. The first twenty-four percent of the story focused on the sexual escapades of the Elysians. Twenty-four percent! The pace was slow to say the least. I wound up skimming the rest of the story. It finally dawned on me at the eighty percent mark that is one big soap opera. Why? Way too much irrelevant conversations that just droned on. It thought the story was about the Zon taking on the Elysians and then the Elysians stumbling upon planet Earth whose inhabitants were an ideal race that could be converted to their army and help replenish their numbers for the humans can procreate much faster and in bigger numbers than the Elysians ever imagined possible. Like I pointed out, there is a good premise here but just not delivered in a page turning manner. The last battle scene is what I thought the entire story would encompass. It was well paced and exciting. Too bad the rest of the story wasn’t this engaging. Who will like this? If you’re a fan of soap operas and lot of dialogue mixed in with some action scenes, this is in your wheelhouse.
