The rookie superstar, the cowboy, and the proposition…

Denny

I’m the rookie hot shot, the new guy who scores at will, and conjures plays out of thin air. But I’m a PR nightmare. Seriously. Ask my agent.

The my anxiety is off the charts. I can’t talk to the press without breaking into a cold sweat and I’m the one they want a piece of. I just need to get through the season and regroup at home. Life is simpler in Elmwood. Nothing changes much and everyone knows your name.

Except…there’s a sexy new cowboy in town. Literally…a cowboy.

He rides a horse and wears a hat, and he’s hot.

And get this…he has a proposition for me.

Hank

Proposition is a strong word. I prefer to call this a mutually beneficial arrangement. I could use Denny’s help with a family business venture in the Four Forest area, and in return, I can help him with his anxiety through equine-assisted therapy.

Yeah, I’m a horse whisperer and maybe a Denny whisperer too. But I’ve never met anyone like him—skittish and nervous in street clothes and a feral beast with cunning instincts on the ice. He’s fascinating, sweet, sexy, and—

Whoa! I’m not falling for a hot shot rookie. No way. Especially not one with a big secret.

Hot Shot is an MM bisexual, age-gap, small town romance featuring a hot shot rookie, a sexy cowboy, and a proposition that changes everything.

Hotshot is book five in The Elmwood Stories series by Lane Hayes. This is going to be a hard review to write. I have loved this series from the start. I adore small town romance and Elmwood is perfection. I want to live there. (Except for the cold wintertime!) The books so far have been so swoony, the love pouring from the pages between the characters. Especially the last book. This one was a little different. I didn’t get that emotional connection until the very end. And in the epilogue. I’m giving it four stars because it was still a good story. It just fell short for me, compared to the other books.

Denny Mellon is twenty two years old. When we first meet him, he is near the end of his rookie year as a power forward for the Colorado Condors. Denny is gifted on the ice. But off the ice, he suffers from extreme anxiety. He has trouble putting more than a few words together, especially when the press put a microphone in front of him after a game. Denny has also been hiding a secret, something he has never acted upon. He is bi-sexual. Right now he just wants to play hockey. Maybe someday he’ll come out but it’s a long way off. The only place Denny feels safe and less anxious is when he’s home in Elmwood. It’s his peaceful place. Where he can recharge. But then, on one of his quick visits home, he sees him, the cowboy, the object of his very frequent fantasies. And his world is turned upside down.

Hank Cunningham is twenty nine years old. His home is in Denver but he’s in Elmwood trying to run his father’s mill while his father is home, recuperating from some serious health issues. But things aren’t going well for Hank. First of all, he really doesn’t even want to be here but he had to help his father during his illness. The locals don’t like him and the business is a mess. He doesn’t know how he’s going to turn things around. There’s one person he thinks might be able to help him, someone the local community loves. But he hasn’t been able to get a meeting with him. But then, all of a sudden, there he is in the bar.

Denny and Hank’s friendship starts out on a bit of shaky ground. Hank has a proposition for Denny, not the sexy kind of proposition though. But Denny has other ideas on how they can help each other. A strange thing occurs. Around Hank, Denny doesn’t seem to be tongue tied at all. In fact, he can’t seem to stop talking.

Although I loved both of these characters, the problem was that for most of the book, their relationship stayed pretty much the same. Although you could sense they were becoming closer, they both held it in, even from themselves. There were no words of love or affection, no real emotional connection at all. What you did see, though, is both characters growing during that summer, trying to figure out what they really wanted, what made them happy. Unfortunately, it wasn’t until the very end they figured out that that was each other!

As I said, I did love these two. I just needed more. As always with this series, I loved seeing the other characters from the previous books. And the epilogue was wonderful. I’m so glad the author is promising one more book in this series. I can’t wait to see who it will focus on next!

I love when an author has a small town series where you feel like it's a real place you could go visit and you'd love everyone there! Each book just builds on this and I'm going to miss this town and these characters when the series is finished.

Elmwood is just adorable, I love the community feel and their obsession with hockey. I even want to try a maple cookie and I'm not a fan of maple syrup at all 😂

Seeing Denny all grown up was so entertaining because I remember when his character was an awkward fifteen year old, and now he's so endearing and unintentionally funny. Love how he gets tongue tied around Hank and the way they meet had me laughing at the calamity of it.

I loved seeing Hank's journey to realise what it was he wanted and how he felt too. Hank and Denny were so good together and I spent this entire book smiling like a loon.

So excited to know there's one more book to come, plus spin offs in the other three small towns - can't wait!

Hotshot rookie with anxiety (Denny) meets sexy cowboy (Hank).

Denny wants to make sure he's really bi, so he enlists Hank to teach him all about gay sex. In exchange, Denny introduces Hank to Elmwood townies, who don't like that the newcomer took over a small lumber operation in the next town over. Never mind that Hank brought along new energy, funding, and plenty of well-paying jobs.

The whole thing with the lumber mill was drama the story didn't need. The employees were disrespectful and talked shit about Hank with no repercussions. Someone vandalized the mill, but there's no investigation and we never find out who.

Denny is kind of standoffish, so it took me a while to warm up to him. I liked Hank more. He's a little lost but kind and genuine.

This story takes place some 12 plus years after the first story. Mary-Kate (Nolan's niece) was 7 in the first book. Here she's 20ish. I don't remember when we first met Denny (second or third book, I think), but he was 14/15 then. This time progression felt weird to me, like here we are, everything is the same, but hey Denny is a grownup now.

Also, Denny and Mary-Kate dated in high school. Denny broke it off because he wasn't in love with her, but they're still pretending to be together for the sake of Denny's reputation. Say what, now? I can understand not wanting to come out as bi when you're a rookie in pro sports, but being single at 22 is a scandal now? In any case, Denny is faux attached to MK for the duration of the story. Not even their friends know they're no longer a couple.

Hotshot is cute with sweet moments and multiple sexy scenes, but I can only read about bisexual hockey players and their sexual awakenings so many times before the stories all blend together.

LOVED!

This series just gets better and better with each new book. Here we get Denny's story. It's set a few years after the last one and he's now 22 and playing in the NHL as the latest hotshot prodigy on the ice.

On a return back to Elmwood his path crosses with Hank, an equine therapist who's in the area doing a favour for his dad, running the mill they've just bought in a neighbouring town - where everyone hates him for being an outsider!

The meet/cute is ridiculously funny, I was smiling like a loon throughout this book, although it is tempered with some low angst situations as Denny suffers badly with anxieties that, when you find out more about his life, make perfect sense and make you want to wrap him up in a big blanket.

Grams is as outrageously outspoken as ever, I love her and how much she fiercely defends those she loves and her grandson Denny is top of that list.

One sneaky advantageous situation later - coupled with a very dodgy proposal - and Denny and Hank find themselves falling not only into a mutually enjoyable bisexual exploration for Denny but also a deep friendship that feels like it could be more.

With the usual small town shenanigans you'd expect in this series, Lane really delivers a gorgeous romance. The relationship development feels truly earned, you can see them falling the more time they spend together, while each also holds back for genuine reasons.

Denny's sexual exploration is scorching hot, as Hank lets him find his own way while providing him with a safe place to land and their times together are some of the sexiest I think Lane's ever written.

There's also plenty of humour, loads of emotion and a fabulous Epilogue which really made me smile loads.

With just one more book to come in the Elmwood Stories, I'm excited to see who it will be next, I'm thinking it might be the other home town ice hockey hero Jake and one of Denny's teammates, they seem to fratch every time they're in the same space!

#ARC kindly received from the author via GRR Tours, I am voluntarily leaving a review

A fantastic story so beautifully written. Such attractive, adorable, sexy characters. Like they wrote at the end, I'm so proud of them both. I absolutely loved this book.

Thoughts as reading:

Great start, I couldn't breath not to miss a beat. I was laughing hard.

*🙈 I'm sorry😊 really don't want to be rude, but Hank has to be the unsexiest name for an mc in a romance book. My apologies to all the Hanks, I'm sure you're beautiful, sexy people, I'm just not used to it. Sowwy😊🤗
But, truth, this for me is the sexiest Hank to ever Hank😉🤤

I enjoyed this one for the most part. I'm struggling that this is book 5 in the series and they are all starting to be similar. I really think the author needs to move to a new series and do something different. These books are all starting to blend together.

In saying that, I did like Denny and Hank's story. I'm not sure why he was afraid to come out. I mean, all the pro-hockey players that are in his town are all gay lol.

The other thing I had an issue with was the vandalism at the mill. We never find out who did it and it really didn't contribute anything to this story. Other than make these nice, sweet people of this small town look like complete assholes, which goes against everything this series has been.

I'm glad we got to see them in the epilogue in the future though. I'm glad they have their HEA.

Meh. Concept was decent and I liked the characters okay, but it didn't wow me. Denny felt pretty solid, but Hank was all over the place. He didn't feel like a real person, or like his storyline really made any sense. The smut did nothing for me, as both of the characters just loved everything equally and it sort of felt like the author was just checking things off a list and making sure they each did every act the same amount and none of them had any kind of preferences or anything the didn't like -- it ended up feeling sort of boring. The ending felt very rushed, and while I felt this was readable, it was just OK.

Hotshot was a cute book overall but I really had trouble fully connecting with the story and characters. It very much just like so many others books I have read with the same premise. However, the writing was good and I could see people really loving -- it was just very much a it didn't connect with me issue.

I'm sorry, but I fell in love with Denny. This guy deserves to be protected and wrapped in a blanket because of how adorable he is. He's incredibly shy (mostly due to his anxiety issues) and loves being in his small town surrounded by friends and playing hockey (which he already does professionally). Since the previous book, I was intrigued by his character and I wanted to see how our little friend grew. Well, it surprised me… I think I grew very fond of him. He's just so easy to love. And even though Hank initially wanted to use him for his own commercial benefit, he realized that Denny had a big heart. Gradually, through small gestures (well, lest says small), Hank fell in love with him. These two were beautiful and pure dynamite together. Reading this book made me happy; it was quick and light. There's no major drama, just two happy people and a town that, despite their initial reservations about Hank, eventually welcomed him with open arms, realizing he wasn't as bad as they thought.

📌 I received an e-arc, and this is my honest opinion/review of it.

---

A Joyfully Jay review.

Hotshot is the fifth book in the Elmwood Stories series, and much of it takes place in Elmwood and the surrounding Four Forest area. Once again, Lane Hayes brings the small town, low-angst charm to the book, with two MCs who are certainly flawed, but so very right for each other. Though there are plenty of cameos from earlier books in the series, and glimpses of those MCs in their new happy lives, this would work pretty well as a standalone. But I suggest you read the books in order, if you haven’t already, to get the full picture.

Once again, I fell in love with MCs and their personalities. There’s a lot of fun banter in this book, as well as lighthearted and loving moments.

I’m a fan of the series, and the hockey-crazed small town Hayes has created. There’s a fun cast of side characters that give the town life.

Read Kris’ review in its entirety here.

I so loved Denny and Hank! Denny the hockey star rookie with the nickname hotshot(a name he detests )and a cowboy who says he’s not a cowboy. Denny comes home for the summer when hockey season is over and Hank is in town opening a new Mill in place for his sick father. They eye each other in the bar and talk outside but Denny is way to drunk and to funny and ends up passing out in Hanks hotel room bed, things are awkward in the morning but the exchange numbers and meet go talk about Denny helping Hank so the townsfolk will like him and Denny will only do it if Hank will be his Bi experiment, he agrees and of course things changes and mixed feelings come into play and heartbreak and then to finally love and then the wonderful epilogue, so good! I loved it! There’s one more book left in the series, I’m hoping it’s Jake’s and a certain hockey player he don’t like that plays hockey with Denny ;)

Beautifully Written Romance ❤️

This series just keeps on getting better and better. As a fan of books about sexy cowboys, and sports romances this definitely hits the spot. After reading about Denny in the last book, I was interested in finding out how he'd turn out, and man, I was not disappointed. He and Hank were perfect😍 I thoroughly enjoyed reading their book. Everything about them—from the yearning and unspoken love, to the struggle and obstacles they faced to finally being able to love one another out in the open was so lovely to see. They both developed immensely in this book, their story is one of finding who they are when so many things seem to be pulling them apart.

The romance really is beautifully done. There are plenty of funny moments, some very cute ones involving Denny and Hank (insert BIG SWOON here), and some sad ones, as they discover more about one another. I especially adored Denny and his journey!

So emotional, sexy, witty and engaging from beginning to end. The uncertainty, secrets, raw feelings and undeniable passion! Loved it! Looking forward to returning to Elmwood.

I received an ARC of this story, which in no way influenced my opinion.

We go back to Elmwood for another romance.
And this time for an unexpected one! I didn’t think our sweet quiet captain Denny was gonna get a book since it would appear as if he was steady with MK, but twist and turns delivered us a sweet sexy Bi Hotshot!

Denny is now an NHL superstar and meets our cowboy Hank, who has a very interesting proposition for Den. Help with new Mill’s image so the townspeople accept the transition, problem? Neither imagined they would end up falling for one another.

I loved that both Denny and Hank gave each other what they needed. It was such a beautiful exchange. Absolutely adored them. Denny managing hisanxiety and all the weight of expectations. Hank just wanting to be better and make it better while being a rock for Hank even if they didn’t see it for what it was… falling in love.

Loved revisiting the town, seeing our favorite couples and their lives. Gah! Just love them! Ann was perfect and gosh! I just love this little hockey town.

Denny and Hank make for such a wonderful couple to read. Denny deserves this happiness and exploration that he finds with the new man in town, someone looking for help in having the locals like him and his family's company. Unfortunately Elmwood is quite tight knit and isn't a fan of outsiders coming in and making changes, whether it may be good for them or not. Hank is not expecting the drunk and talkative Denny that he first encounters, very much at odds with how the star hockey player has been described - shy, reserved, focused. Which he is, until apparently you get some alcohol in him. It makes for a hilarious scene and a great set up for the two men getting to know each other.
The small town vibes shine through as the two men two and keep anything between them on the down low but their chemistry ignites from their first time together. Hank brings a sense of home and peace to Denny that he has been without since his dad passed away. It's what brought him to Elmwood and Gram, that wonderfully snarky older lady who everyone equally fears and adores. They may have agreed to a no strings deal/proposition, but that's not the way that it develops.
I especially liked the mental/emotional journey for Denny, having lived with depression and anxiety for several years. There's a bit there for him to work through but he has a great network of people, including his friends in Elmwood plus the hockey family he has found playing in Denver. Hank becomes the most important there though, I think, able to ground him when needed and doesn't expect him to be the Hotshot he's now known as.
Another fantastic hockey, small town romance from Lane. Can't believe it's the penultimate book of the series but I'm excited to see who will be getting their HEA in the end.
I received an ARC and am happily giving a review.

This is my second audiobook in the Elmwood series by Lane Hayes, and I continue to enjoy everything about this series!

In this book, we meet 22-year-old Denny, fresh off his rookie season in the NHL, as he returns to his hometown, Elmwood. After a night of drinking with his childhood friends, he crosses paths with Hank—the billboard cowboy of his bi dreams.

Hank, 29, is an equine therapist who's come to Elmwood on a temporary basis to run his father’s newly acquired timber mill while his father isn’t able to. The locals are wary of Hank and his intentions, so he needs an ally. So who better than the town’s hockey hero, Denny, sitting right across the bar?

This story has a different vibe than the previous book, but it was wonderful to watch Denny and Hank grow as individuals and realize that what they truly wanted in their relationship.

There's also plenty of humour, especially during their first meeting, and the epilogue really brought the feels 🥹

As always the narration by Nick J Russo really brings the characters to life, and he does an excellent job voicing the whole cast.

2.5 stars. For this installation of the Elmwood series, we’ve jumped forward in time. Denny and MK are adults now. Other than mentions of kids for the couples featured in previous books, there’s very little evidence of that time jump. That’s not really a major issue, it’s kind of the nature of small towns. What I did have an issue with was several uncharacteristic hockey errors. Goalies can’t be captains. Denver can’t have played Boston in a conference final, it would have to be a western conference team. There were also a bunch of editing errors, which again is not typical of this author. In general I enjoyed the story, just not as much as the previous books in this series.

4.5 stars I rounded up. I really enjoyed this book. I liked both MC's, Denny an up and coming hockey star home for the off season and Hank, the son of a man that had recently bought the sawmill in town but was scorned because he was not a local and some people's idea that this out-of-towner stole the mill from the locals.

Hank lines up Denny to introduce him to some of the locals to try and win them over. Of course, Denny and Hank become an item except that Denny isn't out and has never told his fans that the girlfriend that hangs around is an ex.

This book was really well written, moved smoothly along, contained a lot of other book characters so it would be helpful to have read prior books but not a necessity. It was also funny and emotional and I just clicked with it.

"In the charming small town of Elmwood, a chance encounter between rookie hockey player Denny Mellon and equine therapist Hank Cunningham sets off a spark that neither can ignore. Denny, a 22-year-old bisexual curious about exploring his sexuality, finds himself drawn to Hank's confident and kind nature. Meanwhile, Hank, 29, needs an ally in this new town to help grow his business.

What starts as a business proposition quickly turns into a sizzling sexual connection, as Denny counteroffers a proposition of his own. As they navigate their desires, they must confront their own fears, insecurities, and the challenges of small-town life.

Lane Hayes masterfully crafts a story of self-discovery, passion, and acceptance, weaving together themes of identity, community, and love. The chemistry between Denny and Hank is undeniable, making their romance a true page-turner.

With relatable characters, witty dialogue, and a heartfelt narrative, Hotshot is a must-read for fans of sports romance, LGBTQ+ fiction, and anyone seeking a story that will warm their heart and leave them smiling."

Ruthie – ☆☆☆☆
This is the fifth book in the series, and I would definitely recommend that you read them in order, as it will make much more sense of the set up in Elmwood – and why Hank is so unpopular, and why Denny is a local hero!

Hank is helping out his sick father by working at their newly purchased wood mill in the next town over to Elmwood. He has a challenge to improve the popularity of the Cunninghams and reassure the locals that they are not a huge and impersonal corporation about to destroy their town. His secret weapon is a friendship with Denny, local NHL rookie hero, assuming he can persuade Denny to engage.

This plan turns out to be a good one, when the two of them find a strong attraction and a hockey player who is interested in exploring his options as a bisexual man, and Hank could definitely help!

I really enjoyed the growth of their friendship as well as their burgeoning attraction and experimentation. It is fun watching what we can clearly see is the start of a meaningful relationship, even if they are slower on the uptake. Grams, of course, is seeing it all and there to support Denny when things get complicated.

It was great fun to see the couples from previous installments and to enjoy quite a lot of hockey action too!

Shannan – ☆☆☆☆
HOTSHOT is the fifth book in The Elmwood Stories series. It can be read as a standalone without issue.

Denny has a lot of baggage from his childhood. He suffers from anxiety and can't talk to the press at all. He's the rookie hotshot who has a promising career, but his anxiety may be his downfall. He's also very deep in the closet. He comes back to Elmwood as often as he can. It’s where he can relax the most. One night he drinks too much at the bar and accidentally ends up in the hotel room of the sexy cowboy, who is new in town. Nothing happened but Denny really wanted it to.

Hank is only in Elmwood for a short time. He has his own life and horse therapy business to get back to. He'll stay in Elmwood long enough to get his father’s mill up and running while his dad is recovering. The idea is to meet the town's hockey hero and have him do a commercial for the mill, letting the town know if their hero accepts them, they should too. But meeting a drunk Denny doesn't go the way Hank thought it would. When he proposes the commercial to Denny, Denny instantly says no, but after seeing sides of the man he doesn't think many people have, he thinks maybe they can help each other. Hank brings his horses to Elmwood to use as therapy to help Denny with his anxiety and to use as a cover story why they are spending so much time together. Denny can help Hank be better liked in the community and Hank can show Denny what being with a man is like.

I loved watching Denny and Hank's relationship grow. Their chemistry was explosive but the way they spent time together on the horses getting to really know each other on a deeper level was so addictive about this couple. I hope there is more to this series. I loved this little hockey town!

Angie – ☆☆☆☆
This is the fifth book in the series. I have only read book four, which I really liked. This book was just as good. You could read it as a standalone, but we met Denny in book four when he was younger.

Denny is one of the many famous local hockey players. Hank's father bought the mill a few towns over. Elmwood is this little town that just seems amazing, and those townspeople will have your back and support you like crazy. Hank and Denny meet when Denny is drunk as can be. Hank offers Denny a proposition he hopefully won't refuse. Denny accepts and we get to see not only Denny testing out his bi side, but we see a friendship between him and Hank.

Elmwood residents aren't fond of Hank, but Denny introduces him to people and Hank charms them and they slowly begin to like him. We see characters from previous books and, of course, Denny's grams is there as sassy as ever. Love that woman.

Things, of course, get hot and heavy and go further than Denny and Hank expected and probably wanted. Watching their love build and grow and all the bumps along the was great. I cried when things looked bleak but soon my tears dried up and everything fell into place and our men get their happily ever after. Highly recommend this book.

Hotshot by Lane Hayes is the 5th book in her The Elmwood Stories series. It is the story of a mill owner who desperately needs the help of a hockey star to make his business and the town it is in a success and the series of propositions he uses to pave the way which in turn leads them to fall in love. Denny Mellon is in his rookie year with the Colorado Condors NHL hockey team and has become a phenom hotshot with his concentration on the ice and his ability to score in every game he plays in. He is unparalleled on ice but a mess when it comes to interactions with people because he has anxiety and is introverted and reserved. His safe space is with his friends at home in Elmwood, Vermont, where he grew up with his Grams after his father died. The town is known for its love of hockey, the state titles the high school teams have won, and the summer hockey camps they sponsor. They are also a big supporter of Denny and the other NHL players who grew up there. Denny is meeting his friends at the Blackhorse Bar when he sees the man of his dreams – a cowboy who has a big billboard advertising the Rocky Mountain Mill in Denver that he passes whenever he is on I70. That cowboy is Hank Cunningham whose family bought the mill in Wood Hollow. However, it was done somewhat under the table because the people in the Four Forest area knew nothing about it until it was a done deal. Also, the people there didn’t trust the Cunninghams because they thought they were opportunists who were going to change everything and were only there for the money which wasn’t the case because they were into ecologically sustainable production. Everyone was wary of Hank and outright didn’t like him or his company and Hank had to do something about this or the mill could close. He was there because his father was sick and couldn’t do it plus he offered him a lot of money which would help him with his true love which was running a ranch that did equine therapy and he planned to go back to it when the mill was running up to speed. When Denny wanted to introduce himself he needed some liquid courage which led to an interesting conversation with Hank and led back to his hotel room where he promptly passed out. Hank needed Denny because he wanted him to head up an ad campaign to help the mill so when he sobered up he made him a proposition that was turned down because of Denny’s anxiety. However, Denny thought he was bi and since Hank liked men he countered the proposition by wanting Hank to be his first and their fun would last for the summer and if he did he would help him out. Hank agreed because he was attracted to Denny and thus began their relationship with lots of steamy love scenes as they got to know each other. Denny learned about Hank’s love of horses and even learned to ride his horse. Plus he gave him lots of good information about how to win over the townspeople and the workers at the mill. Hank became a safe spot for Denny and they laughed a lot together. He tried some of his ideas and found they worked plus he put himself out there and got to know the people of the town as well as Denny’s friends and worked at the summer hockey camp. It all comes to a head with an incident at the mill and Hank steps up to take control. He also tells Denny he loves him but he knows it’s over as Denny leaves for Denver and hockey. Both men are miserable and when Denny comes home for the final scrimmage he says something in his speech that gets them back together again and he also declares his love for Hank. I really enjoyed this story. Denny is a wonderful person who is like so many of us - great at his job but not so great with people and relationships. He grew so much throughout the story and reached for his happy ending. Hank was also a good guy trying to make good on the job he agreed to take and also helping others, especially Denny. Both men weren’t looking for a relationship but when it happened they were all in. And they both loved Hank’s cowboy hat! Their friends were there for them and added some fun to the story. Grams was a hoot but helped when she could. The town was against Hank at first but the more he tried and did for them the more they came to accept him. I really liked the men’s motto: give back, be there for someone, and pay it forward. This is a message we all need. I highly recommend this book, especially if you like books involving a great hockey player who has some problems in social situations, a manager of the mill in a town where nobody likes him or wants him and what he has to do to get their approval, and a developing love story that ends happily for everyone involved.

The setup for why Denny and Hank needed to be around each other was pretty well done considering how convoluted the whole thing could've been. Hank needed someone to make him look better to the community amd Denny was both attracted to Hank and wanted to try out sex with a man. Even Denny's comfort around Hank was explainable given how he already embarrassed the hell out of himself during their first meeting.

But having Denny be the guy to figure out how he and Hank would justify their time together felt very OOC. It was the first time he'd had sex with a man but somehow none of his anxiety showed up as he calmly laid out a fully thought out plan on how to justify to the towns people about their friendship. It would've made more sense if Hank was the one that thought about and convinced Denny because Denny should've been more apprehensive about the deal, at least with regards to the amount of social interaction their faux friendship was going to force on him. He's already pointed out that people in Elmwood talked a lot, and not only willingly signing up for that, but actually coming up with the plan to make that believable was very weird.

Certain scenes being summarized instead of shown felt weird considering how much they should'vemeant to the plot and character development: the first time Denny and Hank had shower sex, Denny getting rimmed, Denny topping, Denny's first time riding a horse (summarized from Hank's POV), Denny getting the offer from New York (which I literally missed considering it was one sentence slipped in after some unrelated introspection), the BBQ which apparently had a volleyball game, Hank's first few days volunteering

Denny's random all of a sudden guilt over his family came out of nowhere. We get one hint during a conversation with Hank and then BAM, super guilty. Then as fast as it showed up, one look at Hank and it was gone. Wild.

And while the reality of a corporation revitalizing a dead town was nice, the fact that it was still a money focused corporation (and a logging one at that) didn't really beat the negative reputation attached to them. I mean, yeah, Hank had good intentions but corporations and logging are so awful and depraved irl that it carries over into books. No amount of story telling can change that.

The weird third act breakup also didn't make sense? I did not understand whether Hank was going to stick with the mill, whether he was actually going back to Denver, where the sudden "I always take the easy way out" thing came from (when it was never shown at all), how the conversation shifted to "I love you" but also ended up with them breaking up?

The story turning into "How Hank saves Wood Hollow" in the last 15% was very unexpected considering how Wood Hollow's poverty wasn't a very big theme until it suddenly was. Did Hank even like Wood Hollow enough to give up on the practice he supposedly loved in Denver? And if he did, when did that affection happen cause we certainly did not see his perceptions of the town change (we barely saw it outside of the complaints he had about the workforce not liking him)

Denny giving that soeech and coming out at the same time was also super weird considering he felt like a completely differently character from the anxious, attention-averse guy we were introduced to, but there hadn't been any real catalyst or development shown throughout the story tp support that change? I guess it was supposed to be Hank's courage giving him the bravery to do that but when that was already weird, basing yet another weird character change on top of that feels even weirder.

Then things end abruptly and we just get an HEA.

TL;DR Story is pretty focused on the romance (not a bad thing) but then suddenly pivots to resolving external conflicts that hadn't been properly developed or given time to evolve so things felt very rushed and unconnected. Lots of weird choices in summarizing scenes too. 2.5 stars rounded up just because I enjoyed reading about Denny and Hank (even if everything surrounding them felt underbaked)

"You be the hotshot. I’ll be your compass, your home for as long as you want me, sweetheart.”
“Forever.”
“Forever it is.”

I have a proposition for you... it involves an ice hockey star, a sexy cowboy, and a book you must read.

Lane Hayes's latest release, Hotshot, takes us back to Elmwood, and I was so happy to return to this hockey-loving town, with its quirky and loveable cast of characters.

The Elmwood Stories series is one of my favourites. There's hockey, heat, humour, fantastic couples and side characters, and a feel-good vibe throughout these small town MM romances.

This time, it's the turn of hockey hotshot, Denny Mellon, the shy boy we saw being coached by Smitty in Thin Ice.

Denny has never explored his bisexuality, but when he meets Hank Cunningham, his own personal kryptonite in the form of a sexy cowboy, he can't help the desire Hank ignites.

'I wanted him—the sexy cowboy fantasy. I wanted to... give myself a taste of this forbidden thing I’d craved for years.'

Hank has a proposition for Denny: befriend him and ingratiate Hank to the locals, as he attempts to build bridges after his family bought the local mill, causing consternation in the Four Forest region.

I'm as protective of Elmwood as one of the locals, so I didn't immediately take to Hank, not knowing his plans for our beloved town. Whilst my trust took a while, I still enjoyed the banter between these two. And the chemistry?! Wow, it's off the scale! 🔥🔥🔥

'I was practically vibrating with lust. I hadn’t come here for this, but damn, I wanted it. I wanted him very much, thank you.'

But fear not, Hank is amazing!! I now adore this lovely man.

I loved how they opened up to each other. Both men had pasts that were very emotional, so my heart went out to them. These two certainly deserve to find happiness.

Also, every time Hank called Denny sweetheart, my heart tripped over itself. Swoon 🫠🥹

But with Denny going away for hockey, can these two make their proposition into something that lasts longer than one summer in Elmwood?

"As your friend, as someone who worships the ground you f**king walk on…I want you to be the greatest ever. You deserve nothing less.”

Hotshot is such a fantastic read. I honestly couldn't put it down, and I laughed throughout; it's honestly hilarious. There's a special shoutout to Annie. She's cantankerous, honest, amusing, but also a listening ear and a champion when you need encouragement - I'd like to adopt her as my grandma 😍🥰

I'm already excited for more from this lovely little town. I've got my fingers crossed for the next visit to Elmwood... I'm looking at you, Jake and Trinsky... you hate each other, you say?! 👀🤔😉

But for now, I urge you to read Hotshot ASAP. You won't regret it!

"Remember when I said I didn’t want the big love story? I was lying. I’m just…scared. But I do want it. With you... I love you.”

"I have a proposition.”
“Oh, yeah?” His eyes shone and his lips twitched in amusement.
“Be mine from now until…always.”
“Done.”

I would like to thank GRR for the opportunity to read and review this ARC.

Surefire win = combining two of my great loves ie hockey and horses 🏒 🐎🤠

eeeeeeee i looooved this sooo much! I'm new to Lane Hayes, and Elmwood by extension, and ngl I'm pretty much kicking myself for sleeping on this small town Hockey series and this author!

This sweet and sexy romance pretty much checked all my boxes! Not only was Hank and Denny's steamy romance top tier delicious heat, but there was also something precious and grounding and profoundly romantic in the way they both helped and inspired each other get to their own personal next level. I love stories where lovers excel at loving because they provide a safe haven for each other in the face of all the external burdens and the pressure of expectations they had to deal with when they weren't together. Plus, when horses and a super sexy Stetson wearing cowboy are involved everyone wins.

On top of how much i enjoyed Hank and Denny's love story, this installment also got me all up in my small town feels! It gave me Vermont Fall foliage and the visceral sense of wood and deep forest. It had all the nuance and camaraderie of small town pride without a fast-food chain. And in addition to some hockey (wish there was more tbh), there was also my next favourite energy of high level hockey players who come home to nurture and boost their community in the off-season! I love that so much! Imagine skating with your idol at summer camp and getting tips on your backhand forehand?!?!? MEGA LIFE MOMENT that makes future NHL stars without a doubt!

Just the idea gave me the warm and fuzzies, and i found myself really connecting to the heart of this romance because of the shared values of this storied community. And i love that along with Hank and Denny's love story, there came the initiation of fresh perspective and changes that revitalized and nourished their townships, uplifting the community they all celebrate on the regular.

This was one of the more well-rounded and satisfying reads for me because of how many levels this story hit, and for the vibes alone i can see myself comfort rereading this in the future, and i love that thought. i'm so happy that i got a chance to discover an MM Hockey romance that went beyond the hot 'n heavy to also celebrate the roots of small town hockey. There was just so much heart in this and i'm looking forward to getting to know the rest of Elmwood as soon as i can, because now i know for sure that i've been missing out on a vibe that's pretty much written for me!

Hot Shot is the penultimate book in a series I’m extremely fond of. In The Elmwood Stories, Hayes has let her readers enjoy watching a group of men connected by hockey and friendship find their HEA in a town that feels so remarkably real and vibrant that’s is as much a draw as the storylines.

Hot Shot is Denny Mellon, a man we met as a troubled teenager under his Gran’s care in the earlier books. There, along with MK and the kids/(now best friends) he ended up playing high school hockey with, they grew up, the readers watching their emotional journey.

Now, they’re adults and Denny has fulfilled that promise as a hockey golden boy seen all those years ago. He’s insanely talented and headed for the NHL. But his increased stress over the intensity of the off ice public and insecurities are an issue.

The other MC is a man who is torn between his ill father’s plans for him and the one he has made for himself. Outside of the family business.

Hank Cunningham, has come to Elmwood as the son of the new owner of the Wood Hollow Mill. This is a heavily divisive issue as his father bought it from the family that’s established it and been part of Wood Hollow for its history. The town feels betrayed, the mill isn’t working well for anyone, and Wood Hollow itself is dying. Hank’s mission to turn it around seems impossible because he needs to be accepted himself.

Hayes beautifully captures a man who is both determined to make the mission successful but divided over his own life purposes. When he meets Denny, and both the hockey player and Elmwood work together to charm him into the town and the potential for more, it’s everything.

All the many people who have had their own stories have strong roles to play with getting Denny and Hank their HEA. That always includes that wonderful Gran.

Denny’s journey through his fears to commitment and love is equally realistic and rewarding. I love them both.

Hot Shot (The Elmwood Stories Book 5) by Lane Hayes is a sexy heartwarming read. I’m looking forward to one more book in the Elmwood Stories before another town in this area gets its due. I can’t wait for both.

Highly recommended!

4.5 Stars!

I love returning to Elmwood and getting to see old and new characters interact, as well as seeing how past couples are doing in little glimpses. If you've read the series, you'll remember Denny being mentioned in the last book, Thin Ice. However, if you haven't read any (or only some of the) books in this series, don't worry. You can totally read this book as a standalone; however, you may find yourself going back to read the others just because of the town and the characters.

Denny is having a great rookie year but struggles with many things off the ice. Hank is new in town and an outsider. His father purchased a mill that had been locally owned for a long time. Hank needs help garnering some goodwill with Elmwood and the surrounding towns; his father thinks Denny may be the key. Their first meeting didn't go well, and I give both men credit for dealing with the situation better than a lot of people would have. I liked that Denny was comfortable with Hank and that their initial deal worked out so well for them in the end.

There were some moments in the book that tugged on my heartstrings and others that made me smile and laugh. I even shed a few tears at one conversation that I hadn't expected. I liked that Hank finally found something he felt invested in and ready to work hard for. I loved the way he worked with Denny and didn't put pressure or demands on him. I was glad that Hank provided another space where Denny felt safe and relaxed. I'm a little surprised that not many people caught on to their relationship for so long, but I think they both needed that time to themselves.

I loved Denny's grandmother. She's prickly, but she has her town's and grandson's best interests in mind at all times. She's shrewd and insightful. I was glad she gave Hank time to convince her that he wasn't like his father. I loved how she was always there for Denny and gave him support no matter what.

All in all, this is another fantastic read in a series I can easily recommend.
