arc from netgalley!

this started out really interesting, i loved how it was setting the stage for this character to be very important later on, as there is a little prologue chapter set eighteen or so years before the bulk of the book
however, not much happened with this character following on, or to do with many of the characters really. i felt that they were all quite stationary, and that the plot moved very fast around them and kind of swept them away. I didnt particularly like any of the characters, though the duke had some lines that made me laugh a bit but we dont see him until 60/70% of the way through the book.
our main girl was alright, but her sister was severely overshadowed and she had nothing to do at all. I wish jax had anything to do either, but after chapter five or so there isn’t really anything.
the world was interesting, i got medieval vibes from it though im not sure if that is the inspiration, and what descriptions there were were good.
I did find myself skimming from the 50% mark, and then skimming more after 70%, it was not the most interesting plot and the characters could not carry it alone.

Norcliff was a captivating read, skillfully intertwining a well-crafted plot with characters that truly left their mark on me. Erin, the main protagonist, emerged as an exemplar of strength and resilience, embodying the essence of female empowerment throughout the narrative.

Among all the characters, Madame Neigley captured my interest with her unwavering confidence and strength of character, leaving me eager for further exploration of her backstory, if possible.

For those who love fantasy, royalty, and thrilling battles, I highly recommend Norcliff as a journey into a world of enchantment and intrigue.

I had the opportunity to read this ARC on NetGalley, so thank you!

I had the pleasure of reading this ARC from NetGalley.

Norcliff is such a beautiful story about Erin's tragic loss, she goes through so much yet she shows resilience and truly becomes a force to be reckoned with.

K.A. Connolly has done a great job with writing in the era it is based in as well as being descriptive without overdoing it where it takes away from the story.

Besides a kiss there is no spice which is okay because it is a riveting read!

Thank you NetGalley and K.A.Connolly for this ARC in exchange for a honest review.

Norcliff is a tale of grief, integrity, a fight against time where Erin must do everything in her power to save everyone dear to her.

Erin is not like other ladies of her time. She's a free spirit that since infancy has been trained with swords, daggers and horseback riding - in other words - hobbies considered not particularly lady-like. She has a very keen sense of justice and love towards her lands that are nothing but commendable throughout the whole story.

What didn't really tune with me was how *rushed* this book felt, and how certain characters are introduced as powerful allies only to never be mentioned again (and if mentioned only towards the end, once), main example being the poisoner which we are introduced relatively early only to be mentioned once at the end.

Taking out some editing errors, spacing between words missing being the most common mistakes, there are some terms gotten wrong in terms of hierarchy. The prince can't be called majesty, only the king can be addressed as such, or else it could be considered a matter of treason.

I liked a lot the main story per see and the pen of Connolly, es there could have been scenes done better but the way Erin was created simply felt right. Another thing I appreciated a lot was the way Hugo and Erin slowly started warming up to each other throughout the book. I do believe the ending could have been more epic as how the story was heading but I really cannot complain.

Or real thing I would change would be that this book isn't a NA but more of a YA.

Taking that out 3.5/5 stars. + the COVER IS SIMPLY SO PRETTY

Dnf at around 40% :/

I really wanted to like this book and the start was so strong especially since the prologue was so interesting

Where this book let me down was the dialogue, it just felt so stale an unnatural and it just lacked organicness if that makes sense, all the dialogue felt forced and I would dread reading it because I knew I'd get annoyed. It bugs me more because the descriptions were so good at points and then it'd be ruined by dialogue. While I am praising the description it did also have faults one major fault was the fact it felt like I got more description of Erin cleaning herself than I did of the fight in the beginning which makes no sense. Also while Erin and Liana are written as badasses but I felt like it's never really shown properly (E.g the massive fight in the beginning that we barely get a description of) and overall were just flat as characters.

Additionally, the other characters were also flat, the way it took zero convincing to for the neighbouring kingdoms to spread the word, the entire interaction was basically Erin going "My mum and fiance are dead" and them going "Oh that's a shame we never ever speak to you politically but we will spread the word" its just idk frustrating. I think overall there was potential to the book it just need polished more and maybe lengthened to allow a better pacing,

Thank you NetGalley and K.A. Connolly for the Arc!

The story:
A young woman's world collapses as her fiancé is murdered on her wedding day
And her parents are captured.
We follow Erin Hart as she tries to protect her people from the upcoming war.
.
What i loved:
The small prologue:
It was not really needed for the story but it showed the amazing heart of the Hart family

The love story is absolutely cute
It doesn't feel rushed and is so beautifully done !

The main character:
Erin is so beautifully written, she is relatable, kind but also very feminist
The way she stands up for herself and for others. The way she is equal or even more important in the story than any man

The cover:
This cover art 🥰😍 is stunning and totally fits the story this is Erin how i imagine her.

What i didn't like:

For starters, this book isn't in my home library yet 😉 and next to that ... I would love to see the backstory of Madame
But that means i just need a second book 😉

A beautiful book, with the right amount of tension, love and is easy to read i couldn't put it down ❤️

4 stars!

I always choose books by its cover, and this one didn't dissapoint! Thank you to Netgally for the review copy.

It's a fastpaced youngadult fantasy story, without any magical elements. It was a quick and easy read, but still enjoyable!

We follow Erin who is supposed to marry Marc who she has known her whole life. On her way to the wedding, they get attacked by the Morton's who want to take over the land of Erin's family. They kill everyone 'red wedding' style and kidnapp her and Marcs parents.

Erin who grew up with Liana as her sister and bodyguard, and Jax their teacher, travel to the capital to plead their case to the King and get some help. However, the king doesn't care and his son apparently is horrible and joins the Morton forces.

The story continues by them traveling back to save and rescue her parents. Along the way they try to gather evidence and find allies.

Will they be able to save her family and her land? Will they find unexpected allies? And maybe even some love? Read it now!

Thank you to NetGalley and K.A. Connolly for an ARC copy of this book.

If you liked learning about royalty in school and enjoyed films like Brave, this book is for you. I enjoyed the way this was written and I was constantly wanting to know what else was going to happen.

Lady Erin is preparing for the most important day of her life, the start of something new. Little did she know that the new was not exactly what she was expecting. Lady Erin has been brought up with the skills to fight for herself unlike most lady's of the land which is unusual in this time and due to this she really stands up for herself and her family.

I really enjoyed the strong female character that Erin became and how she truly grew within the book. I am really hoping that this becomes a series as I would love to know how Lady Erin gets on as well as her rag tag team of friends.

Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for providing me with an eARC in exchange for an honest review.

This is a fast-paced, action-packed story that builds an interesting world and keeps you on the edge of your seat.

It follows Lady Erin as she seeks revenge for the death of her fiance and capture of her parents, combining court politics with action.

I enjoyed that Erin wasn't held back by the expectations of being a lady at a time that was meant to be medieval. She was happy to fight, sneak around and do what had to be done without worrying about appearances.

While the pacing was great and ensured the focus was on the action and important moments, it also meant that I couldn't get a good picture of what the world looked like. It seemed far too easy to travel quickly even by horse. I also thought Erin's recovery from her fiance dying to falling for someone else was a bit too fast.

I also found some of the language to be slightly too modern for the time in which is seemed to be set. 'Mom and dad', for example, took me out of it a little bit.

Overall, it was a fun read and very quick for under 300 pages.

I enjoyed this book. It's a good, quick read.

Erin is a good heroine, but sometimes I wanted her to be as strong in her conversations with people as she was on a battlefield. I do, however, understand it probably fits with the era it is set in.

Also, we never get much of an insight/backstory into any of the main characters apart from a fleeting mention for each. It doesn't delve deep enough for me. I wanted to know more about Jax and what had happened to him before he met Finley. What was Erin and Lianas childhood like etc.

I liked Erin and Hugos' relationship and the slow realisation of feelings. They were lovely together.

In summary, I enjoyed this book but wanted more. Would recommend.

Norcliff was such an engaging read!
The story was well crafted, filled with love, intrigue and the first steps of a Lady, who is much more than she can imagine.

Erin, the main character, is definitely a "not like other girls" type, but she's not a stereotype at that. She actually is taught skills and benefits from using her own thoughts and feelings to make things right. Her character definitely grows and changes throughout the story, where she has to prove everyone wrong. Erin isn't just a Lady, she is a leader, a lover and a fighter all at once.

I would love to read more from this world and see where the ending actually takes us.

Thank you to NetGalley for allowing me to read this book early.

Norcliff by KA Connolly was a beautiful story with beautiful characters. Following Erin on her journey to protect not just her family, but her land and her people from attack from enemies near and far was a harrowing read. The dialogue between characters was impeccably engaging and overwhelmingly romantic at times. It felt authentic and charming.
I wish more time could have been spent in some areas, particularly with the battle scenes. Reading about Erin putting the skills taught by Jax to use was riveting and I would have loved even more!

I would give the book 4.5 but I rounded up because I really really enjoyed it!
First of all, I appreciate it being written in the third person instead of from two first person perspectives which is so common today. The descriptions are beautiful and I actually enjoyed the archaic tone of dialogues. The main character is lovable, relatable and believable, and for once the romantic interest isn't a billion years old elf/fae lord. The power balance between them is equal, the romance grows naturally, and even if there is zero spice, the connection between them is deep and so wonderful.
I think the story deserves more elaboration, more history. The ending is abrupt, we are left in the dark as to how anything other than the romance is resolved, and the transition between events is a bit sharp. The events happen too fast, everyone always knows exactly what they're going to do and it's immediately successful. All of these, however, don't take away too much from the book and I think we're yet to read K.A. Connolly's best work - and I am excited to read whatever she writes!
Overall, the book felt like reading one of those good, old, epic ballads! Highly recommend.

Thank you Netgalley and K.A. Connolly for allowing me to read this very sweet and enduring romance novel.
Unfortunately, it just wasn't my type of book but that is a me problem, NOT a problem with the book. I will say I loved watching Erin and Hugo's interactions with one another and how it progressed the way it did.
Overall, I did really enjoy this book and I think it would make for an excellent read for teens and up.

Norcliff was an engaging book, expertly weaving a well-crafted plot with characters that actually left an impression on me. Erin, the primary character, developed as a symbol of strength and resilience, expressing the essence of female empowerment throughout the story.

Madame Neigley, out of all the characters, piqued my interest with her unwavering confidence and strength of character, making me anxious to learn more about her past.

Norcliff is a must-read for anybody who enjoys fantasy, nobility, and exciting warfare.

This was unfortunately a book I did not finish.

I got about 23% of the way in, and really struggled to connect to it.

Norcliff is about a girl, her “adopted” sister/companion, and the person who took care of them and trained them to fight. On her wedding day, there is a large fight and that starts the book.

The book gets right into the action and plot, but very quickly new problems and conflict are added in. I struggled to connect with anyone because it felt like I was reading on issue into the next, with minimal world building or context. The pacing felt very rushed and things were happening out of nowhere.

I think if you’re someone who enjoys action based fantasy/sci fi/romance, without much world building and context thrown in, this may be more up your alley.

I just know the relationship dynamic between the sisters and their trainer is wonderful, but it was not enough to keep the story going, for me. I did not get a chance to connect to that relationship.

Erin, the FMC, was strong and courageous. Not scared to get into the middle of a fight. She was reading like a strong character!

I appreciate NetGalley and K.A. Connolly for the early read.

DNF at ~30%
Thanks to NetGalley for an eARC in exchange for an honest review.

First, the cover art for this book - gorgeous. Everything else - honestly not great, in my opinion. I was intrigued the cover and the description and am also a sucker for our badass warrior type women in leading roles. This was just not it for me.

In general, I had issues with the pacing and the writing style, which is why this is a DNF.

Pacing: Very early in the story, our FMC experiences some pretty traumatic stuff - her fiance is killed the day of their wedding and she sobs over his dead body. But then like two paragraphs later, she is laughing uncontrollably at something kind of dumb. While I get that trauma responses are a thing, the writing doesn't really set it up that way and it makes everything seem really superficial. Like, I could care less that the fiance died, cause I have not emotional attachment to them as a couple and the character reactions don't provide any depth to make me care about it. Also, it apparently all happened cause a trusted advisor betrayed them, but because we have no context for who anyone is yet and the character reactions are so shallow, I'm not sure why it is even mentioned. Then almost immediately, our characters whisk off to the king to ask for help with the kidnapping of her parents, but then the king's son does prick-y things and suddenly its all about revenge on him. (And while like, the prince is a jerk and kissing without consent is still gross, it doesn't feel like enough happened to warrant like scorched earth take down). We also get no sense of world building beyond that the area of Norcliff is generally remote. And the political intrigue feels like high school - our FMC goes from being the nice girl everyone wants to help cause her parents are kidnapped to the tramp who tried to seduce the prince in one day(like...what?) And all these events happen in the first 20% of the book, so none of these plot points are given time to breath or develop and the characters all seem very 2-dimensional.

Writing style: related to my issues with pacing, it sometimes felt like the writing was not reflective of what was actually happening. The story would be telling me one thing (trauma! harassment!) but the tone of the text was telling me something else (no big deal). It felt like the author was just reaching for a thesaurus to mix up words, resulting is uneven prose.

This very short fantasy one-off read like a YA novel. Now, that isn't necessarily a bad thing, but I felt like the author was attempting to touch on some very adult themes throughout the book, but at a YA level. Meaning, there is a trigger warning at the beginning of the book that explains that there are a few points in the novel that the author touches on sexual harassment/minor sexual assault. Unfortunately, it felt as though I was reading a YA novel, and then, all of a sudden, here is a very adult theme of sexual assault being, more or less, explained to an adult.
Furthermore, I felt like the majority of the story line was extremely predictable. However, there were a few details towards the end that did shock me a little bit. I stated on my BookMory account that I was unprepared for a significant event to happen at the 97% mark.
I would have also liked to have an epilogue due to the fact that I felt that certain characters received character building when they were first brought in, but they had a lack luster amount towards the end. (Also, I would have liked an epilogue for my own selfish reason of wanting to know what happened between two certain characters.) In addition, I felt that several key points of the story are, more or less, ignored or forgotten as the story goes on. Although the author returned to these subjects, they get kind of tossed aside until the author deems them necessary again.
Overall, I did not hate this read, but I really didn't love it either. I really wasn't on the edge of my seat until maybe the last chapter or two. A lot of big events felt very predictable. And I would have loved a map to further understand the lay of the land of this fantasy novel (however, I do understand that this has not been released, so the author may not have one crafted).
In conclusion, this is not a bad read. I, personally, would not recommend this to someone unless they are just starting out in the world of fantasy and want to dip their toe into the possibilities that the genre holds.

Thank you to the author and NetGalley for the opportunity to read the eARC in exchange for a review.

"That's the nature of hunger. It devours. Take care that nobody devours you. Only you can protect yourself from that."

The story follows Lady Erin, who finds herself on her wedding day facing the tragic death of her fiancé and the kidnapping of her parents by Lord Morton. Instead of succumbing to the devastation, Erin immediately takes action to fight for herself and her family, determined to find a solution to her predicament.

I always enjoy fast-paced stories, and this one did not disappoint. I particularly loved the exploration of the meaning of flowers, a detail rarely highlighted in the books I usually read.

I'm not sure if this is a standalone, but I would definitely be interested in another story centered on Jax's character and his past.

Thanks so much to K.A. Connolly and Netgalley for the arc!

This is a dnf unfortunately.

I want to start this with the things that I liked about this book. Let’s start with the cover - absolutely gorgeous. And that’s about it.

The rest of the book sadly couldn’t convince me.

I could not get into it. The writing style and the weird modern takes written into this book really lost me. The fact that Erin is supposed to be a Lady but has absolutely no manners, and simultaneously being raised as a warrior but there’s no substances to the „action“ scenes. They lack detail as they lack tension.

Character development? What is that? The characters are two dimensional and boring. Why should I care that some character that I’ve known for 10 pages betrays Erin and her family? The characters simply aren’t complex enough for that, plus we get no time to get to know these characters and their relationships. None of them matter.

And the one character that seems interesting in the beginning - Jax - is basically reduced to being a dog on a leash.

The way Erin deals with the loss of her fiance (which she has apparently known since childhood) seems so shallow when she’s crying first and two paragraphs later she’s laughing about some stupid shit. (And yes she is allowed to be happy even though her fiance is dead, but TWO paragraphs later?!?!?) Also she never even really talks about the loss of her parents?

World-building doesn’t exist? We know nothing about Norcliff other than that it is „remote“. And you could counteract this with interesting political intrigue - but guess what - we also don’t get that. Because Erin comes and goes to talk to the king in the span of TWO DAYS!!

I really wanted more of this book, sadly I did not deliver.

2 stars, DNF.
Norcliff is set in a fantasy medieval world where we meet protagonist Erin who on her wedding day she arrives to find her parents kidnapped and her fiancé dead.
I got half way through the book before I gave up on this, the main plot points sounded promising and the book was cohesive but I felt that there was not enough fleshing out of the book.
I feel that the book could have done with a few changes before it is published;
1. The language at times is very modern for a book set in a fantasy medieval world.
2. The relationship between the characters is very informal for a book where a class system is introduced.
3. The MC is supposed to be a Lady and yet she appears not to know any etiquette or social decorum usually associated with these roles.
4. In two very short chapters we go from coming to the capital to have an audience with the King and then leave the capital, the book contains politics and yet it's glossed over very quickly.
That's not to say that this was terrible, in my opinion it's a short quick story for those who was a taste of fantasy and historical but without it being an epic. It just wasn't for me!
Thanks to K.A Connolly and Netgalley for the chance to read this.

I wanted to like it. I really did. The premise had promise.
The FMC is raised/trained as both a kick ass warrior and a lady. The issue is she’s raised in a medieval land where women aren’t supposed to be warriors. Misogyny ruins the day yet again.
The story started off great and then sorta fell flat. The battle scenes were lacking interest and the end was meh.
There are lots of holes in character development, too.
I kept reading hoping the spark of the first half would reignite. Nope
It’s like the author had a character limit and needed to wrap it up quickly.
Disappointing, overall.

Thank you NetGalley for an ARC of this novel!

This book was quite enjoyable and I really liked the characters and the story overall. It did feel a bit rushed in some parts, but otherwise it was a good book. Erin was a very relatable character and it was interesting to see how she chose to work towards saving her family and how she overcame the challenges along the way, including the grief in the beginning. It was an easy read and I like the author's writing style.

Erin Hart loses her fiance and her parents on her wedding day after an attack by the neighboring Mortons. They have her parents hostage and want her to marry Ardent Morton so he can get control of her beloved Norcliff. Erin goes to the capital for help but fails to secure assistance from the King who professes inability to offer it. She must find allies of her own which she does in unexpected places and discovers unforeseen enemies...

After a good-hearted prologue that sets the stage for understanding some of the main characters we are steeped in a friendly, undeniably readable narrative with humor and earnestness threaded through it, tinged with relatable emotion. Hearty paragraphs rich in details pinpoint the exact images the author wants to convey of the characters, the places and life in this world. The infrequent figurative speech twinkled with imagination.

Politics, malicious gossip and machinations might color our protagonist's time at court, but the book really takes off with the discovery of a letter (you will know what I mean when you read it). The storyline becomes most thrilling and attention-grabbing and in no way predictable. The action is served to us in an appetizing manner.

Erin & Liana have grown up being apt pupils to Jax's teachings of fighting and the whatnot, and we definitely see that in action. The three of them are squad goals, the comfort and respect between them, how they help and care for each other. We admire how they deal with things, get justice and their clever plans. The addition of their yummy, instantly likeable ally is a worthy one. We welcome his charm and his courting. There were times when I wanted to yell at the characters for things they stupidly, in my opinion, even considered. But that just means I cared for them.

There is oftentimes a bit of whiplash when scenes change course abruptly. There are a certain amount of things that seem to be 'forgotten' then 'remembered' while others are repeated. These are a few minor mishaps in this more than entertaining tale.

Norcliff is the name of a place, but even though the book seems to focus on it and how its people defend it (those stories are usually the best), it is really about standing on your own two feet — forging your own path. An enjoyable tale with lords and ladies, chivalry, villainy and the preparations and heat of battle, ultimately gifted with great characters. A story of empowerment that shows us that anyone can be brave and it is worthwhile to fight for what you believe in.

*Norcliff* opens with a gut-wrenching tragedy: Erin Hart loses both her fiancé and her parents on what was meant to be her wedding day. From this moment on, the novel becomes a gripping journey of grief, resilience, and unyielding strength. With her parents held hostage by the Mortons—ruthless neighbors with eyes on Norcliff—Erin faces an impossible choice: submit to Ardent Morton’s demand for her hand in marriage or rise and fight to free herself and her home from their control.

What sets Erin apart is her fierce independence. Unlike the traditional women of her time, she’s been trained in swordplay, dagger combat, and horseback riding since childhood. Her skills aren’t just for show—they become essential tools as she seeks allies and ventures to the capital in search of aid from King Ulrich. But with threats rising from the north and bandits swarming Arndale, her path is anything but straightforward.

Connolly’s world-building is rich with court intrigue, personal sacrifice, and emotional depth. Erin’s sense of justice and her devotion to her land are deeply moving, and her character development felt both grounded and empowering. I particularly enjoyed watching the bond between Erin and Hugo unfold naturally over the course of the novel—it added emotional weight without overshadowing the plot.
That said, some elements felt underdeveloped. Certain characters were introduced as major players, only to vanish or receive minimal follow-up—most notably the poisoner, who plays an early role but is scarcely mentioned again. Additionally, there were a few editorial slips (such as missing spaces and misused royal titles—only a king should be addressed as “Majesty”), but these didn’t detract significantly from the story. While I felt the ending could have had a bit more of an epic punch given the stakes.

Title: Norcliff by K.A. Connolly

Release date: December, 1st, 2024

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️Stars

A Thrilling Tale of Resilience and Romance!

"Norcliff" by K.A. Connolly is a captivating adventure that swept me off my feet from the very beginning!

Erin Hart's journey, marked by devastating loss and fierce determination, is beautifully crafted and left a lasting impression on me.

Erin's world shatters when she loses her fiancé and parents on what should have been the happiest day of her life. With her parents held hostage by the ruthless Mortons, Erin faces an impossible choice: bow to their demands or gather allies and fight for her freedom. Ardent Morton’s sinister proposal adds another layer of tension, making Erin’s fight for Norcliff all the more compelling.

Connolly masterfully blends a rich, historical setting with vivid descriptions that draw you into Erin’s tumultuous journey. As she travels to seek aid from King Ulrich and the nobles, the looming threats of bandits and political intrigue keep you on the edge of your seat.

What truly shines in "Norcliff" is Erin's character.

Despite the immense pressure and grief, she emerges as a resilient and formidable heroine. Her growth and determination are inspiring, making her a character you can't help but root for.

Whether you're new to fantasy romance or a seasoned fan, "Norcliff" is a delightful short read that delivers on all fronts.

Its well-woven plot and memorable characters make it a must-read.

Even teens will find themselves enchanted by Erin’s story of courage and love. Highly recommend diving into this enchanting tale!

Norcliff is a refreshing read that follows the life of Lady Erin and her family (both by blood and by choice) as they navigate through complicated situations of politics, warfare, and love. This novel reads as a stand-alone, although there are so many interesting side characters in this story, and I would not be surprised if there is a sequel novel planned for the future. The story starts a little slow with a flashback scene that sets the tone of the novel in a medieval-ish setting. However, the plot picks up quickly after, and it is nearly impossible to put this book down. I had a fantastic time reading this book, mainly because of the strength and determination that bleeds through Erin in each chapter. Her family and friends she meets along the way have bold personalities of their own to match her, and it makes for a very entertaining plot. This book touches on some darker themes, but nothing especially gory is described (with the exception of one of the end scenes). Therefore, this book makes for a perfect YA novel. I love the way this story is set to wrap up in a single book, but it also leaves a possibility for future storylines. The only thing that I believe would have made this book better would be chapters from different character's points of view to add to the tension or build on the relationships in the story. However, this book was such a warm and cozy read, and I am very grateful to K.A. Connolly and NetGalley for allowing me to receive an ARC.
