It's not strictly ballroom .....

This year Darcy’s dreams may finally come true - he has a chance at winning the National Ballroom Championships, something he has worked for and wanted, with his family's support, for as long as he can remember. But after his dance partner leaves to pursue her dreams that don't include dancing, Darcy's world is turned upside down - until he dances with his best friend, Nick.

Darcy's dream, his future and family's dance school are in trouble and his mum convinces him winning could give them the publicity they need to save it, but that means he can’t dance with Nick… A ballroom competition has never seen two men dancing as a couple, they would never be crowned champions.

The night of the competition changes everything and what Darcy thought were his dreams come crashing down and splitting his family apart. Can Darcy rebuild his future with Nick by his side?

I fuse my mouth to his I’m a very visual person and this expression seems very definitive, like there’s no unfusing… it’s supposed to be romantic but at the same time it isn’t ?! Rambles sorry…

So, Dance Dirty With Me is coming out this month—which is basically Dirty Dancing, but gay. Yes, you read that right: Johnny and Baby, but make it gay 🤯🤯🤯. That reminded me I had book 1 lost in my Kindle, so I decided to finally give it a go.

Simple and cute—but simple. A light friends-to-lovers with a bi-awakening twist and some dance floor drama. Darcy and Nick’s bond is sweet and supportive, with just enough pining and family drama.

“We’ve got this, just like we always have. This is us, just becoming even better.”

“I can’t believe how lucky I am to have my best friend and a boyfriend in one very handsome, sexy package.”

I liked Darcy's inexperience in navigating his feelings and Nick’s gentleness, the way he quietly gave Darcy space to figure things out while always being there? There’s something really intimate about that kind of care, and it gave their relationship a soft, genuine warmth that made the whole story feel grounded and tender, but also stupidly hot 🥵 and let me tell you these two can dance in the sheets 🔥

“Fuck, honey. I knew you’d feel good. You’re the perfect fit. Your ass is just right. It’s like your pretty little hole was made just for me. You were made for me.”

This felt a bit longer than it needed to be, and when the important stuff finally happens—the kind of scenes you actually want to see on page—it just skips over them. Like, they go to a gay club, and my vivid imagination immediately pictures these two gorgeous new boyfriends, finally able to dance for real, grinding sensually on the dance floor. But do we get that? No. Just three lines saying they had fun… mehhhhh.

Now… Did I hate things? Yes. Yes I did. Darcy’s mother, grrrrr. What a selfish bitch. The end.

If you're in the mood for some dance shenanigans, gentle romance, and a soft landing, this one’s a cozy pick. Nothing groundbreaking, but it doesn’t need to be.

I may check It Takes Three To Tango before diving into Dance Dirty With Me. Let’s see how messy things get on the dance floor. MMM 👀

For starters, the author created a Spotify playlist to go with this book and it's spot on. Find it here: Playlist Link

There was something about this read that just worked for me. I liked the main characters and the side characters, except for Darcy's parents of course. I haven't done anything remotely close to dance in a long time but all the terms and visualizing them dancing just rushed back at me with ease. Loved it! Nick and Darcy are best friends who met about ten years ago when Nick started attended lessons at Darcy's family dance school. They have been inseparable since and they are such a comfort to each other.

Darcy doesn't date he just dances, since dancing is his life. Darcy did date his dance partner for a short period of time, but they were better off as friends and he's never really been attracted to anyone sexually. Nick would do his own thing when he could get out to the clubs with his other friends. When Darcy's dance partner has to leave right before Nationals, he is devastated that his chance at competing is gone. His world seems to be imploding before him and he's not sure what he's going to do or how to move on. Depression hits him hard for a little while. His mother tries to setup tryouts with possible new partners but he isn't feeling it with any of them.
“Hey.” Nick lifts onto one elbow to look down at me. “Don’t you ever think your dreams are unimportant, D. The stars shine brighter knowing you’re under them.”

Darcy loves dancing with Nick though. He starts to see Nick differently and is confused at the sudden shift in thinking. After his lovely sister basically conks him on the head, he realizes that he likes his best friend. Nick also starts to realize that his feelings for Darcy are hitting strong and he doesn't know how to be around him without messing up their friendship. Once they both agree that they like each other and want to be together, things start to fall into place. With Darcy's plan to dance with Nick and their new found relationship forming, they have some hurdles to get past, mainly his mother!
“I can’t dance with you.” He doesn’t even turn around.
“Why not?” I’m almost yelling.
He eventually comes to a stop in front of me, so close I could touch him, pain written across his face as he answers.
“Because every time I get near you . . .” Anguish threads through his words. “I want to kiss you.”
I stare back at him, seeing those eyes, capable of holding the universe, look dark and haunted and I want to make them shine again.
“What if I want you to?” I whisper.

I loved Darcy's character development throughout this book and the relationship slowly grows and blossoms. Nick was perfect for Darcy, he never pushed and always checked in to make sure he was doing okay and consenting. He was so understanding and supportive of Darcy, no matter what happened. The moments where they danced together, especially their private moments were *chef's kiss*, freaking swoon! I liked that the author took a slow pace with the couple having sex. It reflected how Darcy was jumping into new territory, their lack of privacy in their current situations, and Nick wanting to make sure Darcy was always completely comfortable.
“So why ‘honey?’” I ask, as I finish making the tea and then start tucking into my own cereal.
“Honey is the sweetest thing I’ve tasted,” he replies, waving his spoon for emphasis. “It has so many amazing properties and is made by the most hardworking of all creatures. It reminds me of you.”

The drama with Darcy's parents, how he was their doormat, and that things were never really handled is why I didn't rate this higher. The parents basically disappear into the background after the confrontations. The dad pops back up towards the end but still a lot just seems to have fallen off in that area of the story.

Side note: Nick does have a small freak out where he tries to go to the club and pick someone up to clear his head about Darcy, but he doesn't end up going through with it. He felt like he was cheating on Darcy, even though they weren't together and hadn't spoken about their feelings yet.

Content Warnings : Graphic sexual content between consenting adults; Mentions of Homophobia; Panic attack scene; Manipulation from parents; Injury to dancer (side character); Injury and hospitalization of grandparent

MM - Twinkle Toed Stars

4🌟🌟🌟🌟 Stars - Dual POV
Darcy has big dreams for going to the National Dancing Championship and winning in the hopes of saving his families Dancing Studios and family reputation. Especially to please his overbearing mother who wants to win it vicariously through him. But when his longtime dancing partner, Julia, drops a bombshell just after they qualify in 2nd place for entry to the competition, Darcy is devastated.

Determined to keep going, his bulldozing mother organises a search for another suitable dance partner for him, but he just doesn’t get the right vibes with any of the prospects. The only bright spot in his life is his best friend Nick who also attended classes at the Dance Studio. Darcy continues teaching classes each day at the Studio and practices with Nick when he’s not at work. Nick has always hidden his feeling for his straight best friend Darcy. Lately he has noticed that Darcy is more relaxed when Nick is dancing with him.

Nick is quite a flamboyant character, wearing make up, painting his nails, or goes commando when he goes out on the town with his friends, Kieran and Riley. Hoping Darcy will chill out before the upcoming local contest, Nick invites him to come with them to the club. Surprise, surprise Darcy is getting into the mood and their relationship certainly moves up a few gears.

With only weeks before the Championship and no suitable dance partner found, the idea of Nick as a partner is even considered, but Darcy knows that same sex dance partners will never win, no matter how good they are. Nick wants to give it a try and they enter for a local competition just to test the waters.

Darcy’s parents are behaving weirdly, especially his mother who has been quiet lately, not badgering him. So on the day of the Local Qualifying Competition his mother grabs him and introduces him to a female dancer who will be his partner in tonight’s competition. Krystal is a former winner but her dance partner husband is injured, she is also in tight with Darcy scheming mother. Forced into something he doesn’t want to do he is devastated when Nick arrives late and sees him already dancing.

Behind the scenes afterwards Darcy finds his parents in an argument with an unknown man and Krystal. He is dumbfounded when he discover the cause of the argument. Things will never be the same between Darcy and his parents, he moves out of his home never to return again. His whole life and career gone in the blink of an eye.

Where would he be without his bestie Nick and his Gran and a few other people who also care a great deal for Darcy and they take him in as if he was their own. It was Gran who cheered him up after his big disappointment. Plus Nick would never stand by and do nothing to cheer Darcy up, so he prepares a couple of surprises.

‘Not Strictly Ballroom’ is a big change of scenery from author Jem Wendel’s recent Larchdown Series which is one of my favourites. Instead of returning to Larchdown Valley, Jem has invited us backstage to the world of Ballroom Dancing, and all the shenanigans that can happen behind the scene, nothing like the smooth running show we see on our TV’s. Jem also provided a lovely playlist to accompany the theme of ‘Not Strictly Ballroom’. The MC’s especially Nick had me hoping he’d get his wish, but for me, Darcy should have ‘grown a pair’ sooner and stood up to his mother and her bullying of the whole family. I liked Claire his sister more than him initially. It was late in the telling that he finally showed how good he could be without the interference of his mother.

I received a free ARC copy of this book from the author and this is my freely given unbiased review.

3.5 A nice read with a lot of feels. The entire plot line centers around every characters feelings. MC Darcy, whose first shoes might have been dance shoes, lives to dance and has an overbearing mom who makes sure he doesn’t deviate from her plans. She could have been an OTT character, but the author reins her in. The other MC, Nick, loves to dance, too, especially with Darcy, his best friend. Nick has feelings for Darcy, but knows that they won’t be returned, so he keeps them to himself.
Darcy finds himself without a partner for a pinnacle competition. All the female partners he auditions don’t have a spark with him. He dances with Nick and there are sparks, romantic ones, too. Dare they take an MM dancing duo to the Nationals?
I liked the book, but the idea of two guys dancing together in a ballroom competition sounded a bit ludicrous. Half the fun of watching is the gorgeous costumes and gowns of the females and their enviable bodies. If it became a partner in drag, well, I don’t know.
I kept waiting to see how this flew for the judges, and the audience.
Darcy and Nick were nice young men and well written characters. All of their family members were good characters, too.
There is angst with all of these feelings, but the two young men have a solid and sweet relationship.

Not Strictly Ballroom is a MM friends to lovers romance story about Darcy and Nick.

Darcy is an amazing dancer. His whole life has been about dance, from all the competitions down to him teaching at his family’s dance school. His best friend Nick loves to dance. He will help out at the school when he can, but his full time job is working with his dad as a painter and decorator.

Nick is gay and has feelings for Darcy. Darcy is straight, however he starts to see Nick in a new light and realizes he feels more for him. These two were great together, and I especially loved how they found comfort in each other.

Nick’s friends and family were so amazing, and you couldn’t help but love his gran. Darcy’s family situation was terrible, and I felt so bad for him. Thank goodness he had his sister, and that Nick was always there for him.

I am a former ballerina, so I especially loved the dancing aspect in this story. Overall, I enjoyed reading Darcy and Nick’s journey.

I really enjoyed this story, finally something a bit different from the usual plots.
Nick and Darcy are best friend and they share a passion for dancing.
But while Darcy is a professional, since he comes from a family of dancers, Nick is just an amateur because his parents couldn't provide him the expensive elessons. That didn't prevent them from becoming very closer and occasionally dancing together.
When Darcy's partner drops him, just when they got a chance at the National Finals and his world seems to implode, Darcy starts to see the people around him under a different light: how pushy his mother is, how that drove away his sister, how his father has always been a doormat and especially, how really really close he and Nick are.
Nick starts to see his friend under a different light too: he's gay and he never had that kind of attraction for Darcy, but the need to support and confort him, to keep him close and safe will unreveal deeper feelings.

I really really like how Darcy's character develps through the story: he seems naive and only interested in dancing, at first, but then he becomes more sure and at easy with his sexuality and more aware and determined about his life and his dreams, he finally becomes his own person.
And Nick is just the right guy for him: he never smothers him, nor pushes him. He's understanding and supportive.

What prevented me from giving a higher rate:
the huge lack of communication in Darcy's family: his mum, who's used to handle things without listening to others' opinions, his dad, who often remains silent, and also Darcy, who often presumed Claire would be the one to talk about his personal things to his parent.
Darcy's inability to talk, sometimes, could have cause a riff between him and Nick, but luckily for him, Nick knows him better and doesn't jump to the wrong assumption.

I appreciated that the author set a slow pace about the sex scenes: they perfectly reflect the fact that Darcy was in a complete new territory and that Nick wanted for him to be sure and completely comfortable.

The dancing scenes were beautiful, I adored how their physical steps and their moves matched their feelings.

A shoutout to Nick's father who's an amazing man, the silent kind who speaks few words but with a very deep meaning. I really liked him. Gran, too, of course!

I'm very curious about the next book of this series and I look forward to its release.
In the meantime I very much recommend this story.

3.5 stars - Received as an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I liked a lot of the side characters in this Nick's gran had a lot of funny moments and the heartwarming moments with Nick's Dad and his friends were nice. Mark and Justin felt like key players in Darcy realizing he could love Nick and everything would be fine. For the first half of the book Claire honestly came off as a really bad sister just leaving Darcy alone when she knew he was hurting but she redeemed herself towards the end when she was actually there for him and helped with the dance studio. The dancing scenes between Nick and Darcy really captured their deep love for both the art of dance and each other you could really feel that there was nothing the world they'd rather be doing than dancing with each other. I normally find friends to lovers stories really rush into sexual dynamics so i liked the fact that Nick and Darcy's sexual relationship developed slowly throughout the book it made it more realistic with Nick being experienced and guiding Darcy through these new experiences with him at his pace.

This definitely could've been a 4/4.5 rating however I felt like the conflict with his family was never really delved into although it was a main plot line, Darcy's parents just kinda disappeared. There was also a massive lack of communication between Darcy, Claire and their parents which meant we only received surface level answers to why some things happened such as why they sold the dance studio and their parents split.

If you like the movies Billy Elliot and Cutting edge i defiantly recommend you read this it gives the same vibes.

This was such a cute read.

The amount of pressure Darcy feels about how he has to perform is palpable. The way that Nick supports him and is willing to help him achieve what he thinks he wants is so beautiful. The aspect of the book that deals with the dance school and Darcy preparing for Nationals is great, and I really enjoyed those parts of the book.

The only think I think could have been done just a little bit better was a little more fleshing out of the conflict between Darcy's family and his mother. Even though it was supposed to be a main point of conflict in the book, it felt a bit like an afterthought. I think a few more interactions, or conversations, or memories of the past might have done well with aiding this.

That being said, overall it doesn't detract enough from the story that it can't be a really enjoyable read. The low angst made it such a cozy comfortable way to recover from some of the more emotionally charged books I have read of late.

If you want something that is cute, fun, and will help you recover from a darker read - this is absolutely a book that will do that.

story of Nick and Darcy

This is a best friends to more romance, featuring Nick and Darcy, and is book one in the Dance Lovers Collection series.

Darcy has spent his life chasing the dream of winning the National Ballroom Championships, but when his dance partner leaves, he’s forced to choose between tradition and dancing with his best friend, Nick.

This was such a lovely, low angst read. Darcy and Nick’s friendship turning into something more was so sweet, and I adored how much they would do anything for each other. And the dancing was just beautiful to read about, I could picture every part.

Things to expect in this book are:
Book 1 in series
MM romance
Best friends to more
Dancer x painter
Dance competition
Family pressure/legacy
MC in lingerie
Demi rep
Bi awakening
Spicy times & dirty talk
Lots of dancing
Bit of family drama
Found family

Nick and Darcy ❤️

3.5 Stars ⭐️

✅ Friends to Lovers
✅ Sweet ❤️
✅ Spicy 🔥

This a sweet friends to lovers read centered around dance which was a nice change from the books that I've been reading lately. It had great characters with a very sweet and passionate relationship build. This story has family drama but it adds a depth to this story rather than stifles it. In the end these two sweet guys don't let the drama tear them down, they have each other and that's all they needed all along ❤️. I'd recommend this book it was a sweet story.

This book appealed to me due to the title which reminded me of the great Aussie movie Strictly Ballroom . Although I don't know much about dancing this was full of angst and family drama. Well written with appropriate language to the setting. Well done Jen.

Oh, this book! These guys!!!

I won't lie to you, I absolutely adored this book. So much so that I've read it twice already 😊.

It. Is. Adorable!!

If (like me) you remember the movie, this is loosely based on that but combine it with a bit of Heartstopper too ❤️

Nick and Darcy, BFFs since they were young, suddenly catch feelings for each other and in this book you follow them on their journey together, not just as a couple but with everything in their lives.

Loved the characters in this, especially Nick's gran ❤️, and I loved how this was so close to the film but so different at the same time.

Will keep this for a long time and I have no doubt it will turn in to a comfort read for me 😊

Not Strictly Ballroom by Jem Wendel is the first book in her Dance Lovers Collection. It is the story of two men who are best friends, one who is supported by his family while the other is not, who love ballroom dancing and find they love each other along the way. Darcy Franklin comes from a ballroom dancing family as his mother and father were partners who made it pretty far in the circuit in England but never won the Nationals. They now own a dance studio where Darcy grew up and he also loves dancing and teaching there. The story opens where he and his partner Julia have earned a spot at Nationals but she isn’t going to compete because she has taken a job where she won’t be in the country when it happens. Darcy is crushed but understands that dancing isn’t her passion like it is his and hopes he can find another partner but isn’t too optimistic. Nick Richardson has been Darcy’s best friend since they were children and he also loves to dance, having taken classes at the Franklin’s studio and helps out there when he can. He helps his dad with his painting and decorating business but all he really wants to do is dance and support Darcy. The candidates aren’t what Darcy hopes for and he asks Nick to dance with him. Nick doesn’t think he has the necessary skills but Darcy talks him into it and they decide to dance at a regional competition to see if it can work, especially since 2 men dancing together has never been seen and most people think they can’t win. And then they kiss which leads them to hoping maybe they can have something more than friendship together. Meanwhile Darcy is helping Mark and Justin with their wedding dance and he also meets Nick’s friends Kiernan and Riley. They invite them to visit Peak National Park and they find a quiet swimming hole where they initiate a love scene under a ledge. This makes Darcy realize that Nick is the only person he has ever wanted and Nick has loved Darcy for a long time but never thought they could be together because Darcy was straight. Nick is very close to his family, especially his gran, and when she falls on the day of the competition he goes to the hospital with her and is late to it because of it. When he gets there he finds Darcy is dancing with one of the former champions, a women, all because of something Darcy’s mother said. His mother is not a nice person, always bullying Darcy and his father into what she wants and what she wants is for Darcy to win Nationals and he can’t do that if he is dancing with Nick. So she tells him something about their dance school that makes him determined to win, even if it means not being with Nick. Nick understands and still supports him, but when Darcy overhears his mother talking to a businessman that says everything she told him was a lie, he finally stands up to her and says he will not do as she says and doesn’t want anything to do with her. He then asks Nick to dance with him at Nationals and they declare their love and also have some hot love scenes. Nick proves his love as he helps Darcy find the future they both want that lies in dance and a dance school that both will work at. They also have a great time at Nationals and prove everyone wrong when they dance. I really enjoyed this story, especially since I have watched “Dancing With the Stars” in the US since it started so I know all of the dances they are talking about. Darcy is a wonderful person and dancer and will do anything to save the dance studio but he doesn’t want a future without Nick in it. Nick has loved Darcy for a long time and is thrilled when his love is returned and will do anything for him, especially find his happiness that revolves around dancing. Darcy’s sister is supportive but his mother is a narcissist and only wants what makes her look good and I was happy to see he reconciled with his father. Nick’s parents were wonderful and so supportive of his lifestyle, his love of dance, and his love for Darcy. I also loved all of the dance competitions and the dances they did. I highly recommend this book, especially if you like stories that revolve around ballroom dancing, two best friends who love to dance together, and them discovering they love each other and want to build a life together.

Darcy’s mom can suck it!

Ahem. Just had to get that off my chest.

I enjoyed this gem of a novel by Jem Wendel. Ballroom dancing! Bi-awakening! Tender charming friends to lovers! It’s adorable and so sweet. No angst really in the relationship, just via secondary characters, with some Strictly Ballroom-esque plot twists that I appreciated. The world of ballroom dancing is a closed one, and while this doesn’t dive deep into it, it didn’t feel inauthentic. The focus stayed on the couple, and there are some triumphant dance moments, though not specific into the details of the moves.

Darcy and his best friend Nick have always had each other’s backs, and when one realizes he has deeper Feelings and then the other receives a kick in the pants from his sister, alerting him that he’s been in love with his friend for years, Things finally reach a tipping point. It takes them a move or two to figure out that the pining is mutual, but then they’re all in and just lovely. It felt like a natural progression of their friendship, and yet still intense. There’s beautiful on-page intimacy.

Darcy’s been left high and dry with no partner for the National Ballroom Championships, and part of the plot is getting him there. Asking Nick, who loves ballroom and has taken lessons when he could scrape up the money but not been supported in the past, to dance with him is an industry-turning risk, but one Darcy’s willing to take, because they’re so in synch together. Of course, the road to Nationals is paved with others’ ill-intent…!

Seeing these two dance together via the pages is a big beautiful part of the story, and I so wish there were more dancing books like this! When Darcy asks Nick to be his partner in competition for real, my heart leapt and danced too. The response from the community and the students at Darcy’s parents’ dance school was so heartening. Idealistic, yeah, but, it’s how I wish people all were IRL, and gave the story such a hopeful feel.

There are shenanigans, things fall apart and come back together, creating a strong push-pull. Nick’s got a wonderful family that needs him at times, and Darcy’s family falls apart in spectacular fashion (see first note on Darcy’s mom! Worth repeating!). There’s nowhere for them to be really alone much, and they need to work on finding their space. When things really fall apart, seeing them be there for each other is heartening.

I don’t really like friends to lovers as a trope bc usually it means one or the other or both has been sleeping with other people the whole time they've been close, and that’s the case here w Nick, but, the author left out details of the past, thank goodness. There is one early instance of a nearly not safe for me encounter that thank goodness was averted— I breathed a sigh of relief, but, Nick does have a sexual past (of course, I know, reality check!) of hooking up, but it’s not made a Thing of. In fact, contrarily, I wish they’d addressed it a little more. But I probably would have hated that so I’ll shut up now. Darcy has very little experience, and only with a woman, and his bi-awakening with Nick is really lovely. I did love this friends-to-lovers scenario in the end.

But oh, jail is too good for Darcy’s mother. (No, she doesn’t go to jail. I’m just being a drama llama.) Darcy's Dad is sort of redeemed, Darcy's sister rocks, and Nick's parents, gran, and their funny friends wind up being a highlight.

HEA, two-men-dancing, Strictly Ballroom–inspired, friends to lovers, bi-awakening. No cheating, though there’s a near-miss that made me a bit sick, but, DIDN’T happen, so, no emotional cheating/others. Highly recommended.

My thanks to Gay Romance Reviews for the ARC; this is my free and impartial opinion.

Jem Wendel is on my list of if-they-write-it-I-will-read-it authors.
Her new book Not Strictly Ballroom, is
inspired by a movie I adored, and this friends to lovers story has so much going for it.
Darcy is a phenomenal dancer, and as the book begins has finally qualified for nationals, only to have his partner tell him she can’t go. From achieving a dream to having it dashed, Darcy is adrift. All he knows is dancing. Teaching at his family’s dance school and competing all his life, he never had a traditional childhood. My heart broke a little for this sweet, sheltered, soulful young man. Thank goodness he has his friend Nick.
Sunshiny Nick discovered a love of dance early, although his working class roots make it more of a hobby. He works for his builder dad. But he’s happy to help at the dance school and spend time with Darcy, the friend he’s been in love with forever.
When Darcy’s quest to find a new partner yields no results, he suggests he and Nick partner up. Nick is hesitant, not sure MM couples are allowed. But when Darcy assures him it’s ok, he’s all in.
Everything about this book is fantastic.
🪩The dancing: rumba, waltz, and tango. Whew!
🪩Darcy coming out of his shell, making friends, and exploring his sexuality.
🪩The wedding where Darcy choreographed the grooms’ first dance. Swoony, sexy times.
🪩Nick’s family. His Gran is a hoot and a treasure. I really liked his relationship with his father. When his Dad’s mates ask about Darcy, Nick’s dad tells them calmly Darcy is a bloke. Their acceptance is lovely. I loved how gruff Barry becomes one of their biggest supporters.
The day of nationals does not go according to plan, and the less said about Darcy’s family the better. His father means well, but is weak and controlled by his narcissistic, manipulative mother. The lies and betrayal are heartbreaking.
Luckily Nick’s family welcomes Darcy into their home. (Later there is a reconciliation with his dad, which is sweet.)
I loved Darcy and Nick’s journey. Where they end up, the life they create together, is so perfect. And the epilogue!! Don’t miss this one. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

🩵 ARC REVIEW 🩵 Not Strictly Ballroom 🩵 Jem Wendel 🩵

From Dancing in the Rain to Dirty Dancing—I love dance movies! And if there’s one I love above all others, it’s Baz Luhrmann’s Strictly Ballroom! ❤️❤️

So, when I saw Jem’s playful reference to the movie, I knew I had to read this book! I know, I know… people always ask: what do you prefer better? The book or the movie?

Please don’t ask me to choose! Because Jem’s book blew me away. 🙈🙈

I love the whole premise of the book. Working-class area in Sheffield. Best friends to lovers. Sexual awakening. The love of dancing. Finding your place in the world. How do we align the expectations of others with the dreams we have for ourselves?

Darcy and Nick are absolutely beautiful. At the core of the book stands a strong friendship and a shared love of dancing. They know each other better than anyone else and Jem does a fantastic job at showing all these small things that make their relationship unique.

The journey from friends to lovers is not without small bumps but this is not an angsty read. The sweetness of the story combined with the exploration of intimacy is depicted wonderfully.

I loved the sexual awakening. How Nick takes Darcy by the hand and guides him through this new territory. It was just so sweet and perfect 🥹🩵 Nick is truly a lovable character and Darcy’s insecurities are so relatable.

I have to mention the great side-characters and the way they embrace these two young men. There are some beautiful moments of acceptance and especially Nick and his father brought tears to my eyes 🥹🩵

In true movie fashion there is some outside drama that makes for an engaging read but you will get no spoilers from this reader 😉

I really really enjoyed this sweet and heartwarming read by Jem and I highly recommend that you put on some music and let Darcy and Nick sweep you away 🩵🩵

While it would be lovely to have more backstory for the to friends, we're introduced in their lives at the pivotal moment they begin to share feelings with/about one another. Since Darcy has always been busy with dancing and his family's dance school, he's never realized he could ever be anything other than straight, and he's gained very little experience (if any) in the relationships he has had. Nick is of course more than happy to remedy that and teach Darcy what he knows.

I love that the relationship between Darcy & Nick never truly falters once they confess their attraction. There's a very short moment during a dancing competition, but that's when the dynamic begins to change between the MCs and their respective families. For all the angst that Darcy's family gives him, I'm glad he had his older sister, Claire, to have his back and keep him updated with things he's not told.

I'm familiar with the movie this story is basically referencing, but it's been so long since I've seen it (I'll have to remedy that), this story was a great way to be reintroduced to the general storyline.

I loved Not Strictly Ballroom and would highly recommend it to those that love dancing, even if you don't necessarily know all the dances mentioned. It was beautifully written with lovely descriptions and vivid detail. I believe this is the first book from Jem Wendel I have read, but I enjoyed it immensely.

I received an advance copy of this book and am volunteering my honest review.

All Darcy ever wanted was to win the nationals Ballroom Dancing, his whole life has been focused on reaching this highest achievement and they are finally within reach. Then he gets bad news from his professional dancing partner and she has to pull out to follow her dreams. He’s devasted and loses all hope until he realises that it may be possible if he dances with his best friend Nick. But same sex couples have never got so far and he has other problems brewing in the background with his pushy mum, the family business his dreams of owning his own dance school.

Nick has always been there for Darcy, living with his parents and spending time with his gran. He also has dreams but has been working odd jobs with his dad. He adores Darcy and loves dancing and knows all of the moves even though he’s just an amateur. So when the opportunity for him to be Darcy’s partner in the Nationals comes up, well why wouldn’t he help his best friend out. Spending time together and following their dreams brings them even closer and they realise there’s more between them than just friendship.

Somewhere in between all of this, these best friends become more and Nick wants to give Darcy everything and show him that they can have their own future together.

There are lots of feels, family problems, best friends to lovers, pushy parents. Both characters do a lot of growing up over the course of the book and have to deal with adult issues, and everything that comes with being a same sex couple in the world of dance. I have never read a book like this about ballroom dancers so it was fun reading something different for a change and it was so easy to fall into the sensuality of the two men dancing together.

Not Strictly Ballroom is my first read from Jem Wendel and I loved it! The story, inspired by Baz Luhrmann's "Strictly Ballroom," is an MM twist set in Sheffield, England. It features Darcy, a dedicated dancer and Nick, his best friend and unexpected dance partner. Their journey through love and dance, overcoming obstacles mainly posed by Darcy's manipulative mother, is a joy to follow.

Darcy has spent his entire life dancing, driven by his mother, a former dancer who never made it to Nationals. This was supposed to be his year, but when his long-term partner quits at the final stretch, Darcy faces tough choices. At the same time, he's grappling with new feelings for his best friend, Nick.

Nick just wants Darcy to be happy and will do anything for him, even suppress his own growing feelings. Discovering that Darcy feels the same is a relief, but their budding romance brings new challenges.

This book was a real page-turner. Nick and Darcy are wonderful together, especially during their intimate dance moments. The emotions and feelings are perfectly conveyed. Nick's supportive parents and gran are delightful, while Darcy's family dynamics are more complicated, particularly with his overbearing mother. Darcy's dad, however, is a bright spot, and their conversation near the end is a pivotal moment.

Not Strictly Ballroom is a delightful and feel-good read with outstanding characters. I hope to see more from these characters in the future, especially to know if the dance studio succeeds long-term. Highly recommended, especially for fans of dance and heartwarming romances.

Inspired by the movie Strictly Ballroom Jem Wendel created a beautiful journey of dance, music, friendship, family and love.

I was swept away and could not put the book down until I finished it. I literally was carrying my kindle around so that I could keep reading. This story brought me so much joy and has a great cast of characters. High Five to the author on another fabulous story. You hit it a Grand Slam with this one!

There are so many wonderful moments in this story. I went on a bit of a musical journey since I played each song that came up (doing my own style of dancing) and was introduced to several new bands / songs that I have not heard before. (Great big Thanks for the playlist) It is also fun to learn a bit about the differences in languages. (I think the notes on language and glossary is a lovely bonus) These lovely additions as well as the heart of the story are why I have fallen in love with this author and look forward to reading more of her works.

Why is it that we do not see LGBTQ+ community represented in dance competitions and dance movies? At a snails pace we are slowly starting to see the LGBTQ+ community represented but we have a long way to go. My friend is a dance instructor and they had to fight to have the right to dance. I look forward to the day when it does not matter what color your skin is, what you believe in or who you love. Until that day let’s keep on dancing everyone. Great big hugs to you all.

NOT STRICTLY BALLROOM was, for me, a mixture of Billy Elliot and Strictly Ballroom, both films I loved.

Darcy is the dancer, desperate to make it to the National Championships. One thing or another has meant he's never made it, but this is his year... hopefully! Nick is his best friend, someone who dances because they enjoy it rather than for competitions. Both of them live at home so privacy is next to none.

This was so enjoyable, a real page-turner. Nick and Darcy are just wonderful together. I loved the moments when they were dancing and it was just them. The feelings and emotions came off the page perfectly. Nick's parents and gran are outstanding and I loved them hard. I want them! As for Darcy's parents, well, I liked his dad. Does that count? I also agreed with Darcy when he spoke with him near to the end, but that was something he had to face for himself. As for Darcy's mum, that's enough said about her. And Claire redeemed herself. I also liked how Nick and Darcy had no hesitation in showing her their displeasure when she messed up.

A great story with outstanding characters that I was totally engrossed in. I hope to see more of these in the future. I need to know if the dance studio is a success long-term! Definitely recommended by me.

The concept of a male dancing couple was wonderfully fresh and captivating. This alone made 'Not Strictly Ballroom' a delightful read. You’d think nothing could stand in the way of Darcy becoming a champion at a major ballroom event. He’s been dancing since he was six, and moving on the dance floor is second nature to him. However, his longtime dance partner had other plans and left him just before the championship. The one picking up the shattered pieces of Darcy’s dream was his best friend, Nick, who also had some dance experience but was never skilled enough for competitions. The stars aligned (with a bit of drama stirred up by various characters, including Darcy’s obsessive mother), and the two friends found themselves rehearsing for the biggest event of their dancing lives, unsure of what to expect as no one had done this before, all while navigating their blossoming feelings for each other.

I found Darcy’s bisexual awakening a bit sudden, which felt somewhat unnatural, but this didn’t take away from my enjoyment. I was happy to see the two men discover something far more meaningful than fitting into someone else's mould. Despite the many obstacles they faced, they persevered because they had each other. I liked that the story wasn't too heavy on their sexual relationship. It was more focused on their partnership on and off the dance floor which I thought was very well done by the author. In the end, this was a feel-good book to me where creativity, dance and love conquered all.

Darcy Franklin lives to dance, but is left high and dry, just as he wins place in the National Ballroom Championships. His partner Julia, has got her dream job and is leaving immediately. If Darcy wants to compete, he needs to find a new partner fast.

Nick Richardson loves to dance but is no where near as good as his best friend, Darcy. Nick has also been in love with Darcy since his was sixteen, but he keeps that secret to himself. Nick works with his father as a painter and decorator, wanting to save enough money to buy his own place.

Nick and Darcy have always been close, but when they start to dance together, feelings take over and they start a relationship. They decide to dance together at Nationals, but Darcy’s mother has other ideas (not a very nice woman). This causes friction between Darcy and his mother, but with Nick by his side, he stands up to her.

After nationals Darcy and Nick are in high demand, and decide to open their own dance studio.
They are partners in business, life, love and on the dance floor.

This was my first Jem Wendel novel, and I have already downloaded the second and third books in this series.
I loved the way Jem gave me the family community vibe, where everyone cares for one another. Gran was an adorable side character, always being fiercely supportive of Nick.
It was lovely to read the word ‘trousers’ instead of ‘pants’.
Darcy and Nick were so wonderful together and seamlessly moved from best friends to lovers without any worries.

This is the first romance book I have read that centers around the world of ballroom dancing, and let me say, it won't be the last. 💙

Jem Wendel makes us jump feet first into the wonderful world of dance with all it's complexities and sensuality. We get to see how much dance can do for a person and for someone like Darcy, who lives and breathes dance, it often becomes a lifeline.

What I love the most from this story is the contrast between Darcy's and Nick's families. I love the relationship Nick has with both of his parents and also his grandmother. It's so refreshing to see parents support and accept their child wholeheartedly. Sadly, Darcy doesn't have that chance, but this book proves us that you can choose who you consider your family. 🫂

This is a wonderfully sweet tale of two best friends fighting together to accomplish all their hopes and dreams. Add into this the incredible chemistry they have, on and off the dancefloor, and you get a great read. 🫶🏻

Let me say that I fell in love with Nick and his little quirks (🩲💅🏻 iykyk 👀) and how that young man is a great example of a well rounded person. 👏🏻

Acknowledgment: Thanks to Gay Romance Reviews for providing an ARC

While the author in their introduction to this novel tries to encapsulates this novel by saying it’s like a gay Strictly Ballroom- while this is true, it also does a great disservice to how bloody awesome this novel is.

The novel features Darcy, the son of a former professional dancer who never quite got to reach her dreams. And as you can imagine, she has subsequently foistered her dreams upon him; while you can tell Darcy does enjoy the dancing (and the winning), you can tell that he also longs for me, to be his own person with his own dreams.

Thankfully he has his best friend Nick, who in a nice little subversion is a gay tradesman who helps in his dad’s business to earn enough money to buy his own house for a place to escape to.

Wendel is a very talented writer- both Nick and Darcy are written sooo well and their dreams, desires and fears are often shown in the book in such a way, you can’t disagree with them.

He also sets this book in the north of England- traditionally a working class area that you think are going to feature homophobic attacks, but again Wendel nice subverts this by only featuring just love and acceptance; while not glossing over any nastyness, it just feels all kinds of real and true.

I highly recommend this book to everyone to purchase

I liked the book because I danced as a young boy and that was the reason I read the book, so all the dance aspects were familiar to me.

However, I had some issues with the dynamic between Nick and Darcy. Something just didn't click. First of all, I know gay guys in the dance world, I danced with them for years, many are more on the feminine side and are 90% total bottoms. So the book is a bit of felt unreal to me, especially gay-bending a straight guy and he wants you to top him? No. Sorry :) I have been in many, many, many similar situations and it does not work like that :)

Otherwise I enjoyed the book and the drama, it's well written and I wasn't bored. I would recommend it to people who like dancing and who dance themselves.
It's based on a movie as far as I can tell, but I haven't seen it. Maybe I should?
The cover is also rather discouraging, it feels very 2010. The book would have been more popular if it had a cover similar to Becca Neil's books. Special edition, author?

I would give the book 4 stars, but I take away 1* for a near cheating call bewteen MCs. I hate cheating in books, even in close situations. Nick really shouldn't be doing this.
It spoiled some part of the reading experience for me.

********** Contains Spoilers**********

This is the first book that I’ve read from Jem Wendel and it won’t be my last. I thought this was a good start to the Dance Lovers Collection. I really enjoyed Darcy and Nick’s story. Darcy and Nick have been best friends for years, they both love dance but since Darcy is from a dancing family he’s more serious into doing competitions, whereas Nick does it for the fun of it. I thought the progression of their relationship from friends to lovers felt believable. Yes, their relationship moved pretty quickly after they admitted their feelings for each other but because they’ve known each other for years it doesn’t bother me.

I absolutely adore Nick’s family, especially his Gran. Darcy’s family is the complete opposite. His mum is a complete and utter b*tch who easily manipulates Darcy and his father into getting what she wants. Darcy was right when he told his father he’s a pushover and easily folds to her demands and I’m glad that he finally sees the light. I thought that Darcy and Nick were great together and their chemistry was off the charts. I’m looking forward to reading the next book, as well as more books by Jem Wendel in the future. I’d recommend this book and author to others.

I’ve not seen the movie which inspired Darcy and Nick’s story, but I do love a good childhood best friends to lovers romance. This one is really lovely, Darcy and Nick are crazy good together and I absolutely loved learning a bit about all the dances. I also appreciated that the author mostly keeps the angst outside the relationship. Much of the drama centers around Darcy’s controlling and bulldozing mother, she is pretty awful and an effective villain in Darcy and Nick’s journey. The side characters are excellent, even Darcy’s mother, who is terrible but still an interesting and nuanced character. I loved the contrast with Nick and his family, who are supportive and pretty wonderful. Gran was definitely a highlight, and I really became attached to this family. Darcy goes through a lot, with losing his dance partner and his dealing with the conflict with his parents, all while adjusting to his new feelings for his best friend. He’s quite endearing and I was rooting for him to find a way to grab for the life he wants. Looking forward to more from this series.

This is the first book from a new-to-me author.

I really like this story. I have no idea about the movie which inspired the book so can't make any comparision about it.

Darcy and Nick are really cute together, best friends for a long time, and suddenly it feels like their feelings are changing drastically. When Darcy's dreams about the national dancing competition are in danger, Nick seems to be the obvious solution to rescue them.

There is a good depth to the characters, lots of background to make them real. Their relationship comes together quite fast though.

I love the secondary characters, especially Nick's dad, his dad's friends and his gran. It's lovely to see a working class dad who struggles a bit more with emotions and open acceptance who then unconditional is behind his child.

Darcy's parents are a bit stereotype but a typical case of dancing parent/mum.

The ending is very fairytale, non angst but it fits the vibe of the book.

I will definitely read more from this author.

No way was I missing this

As a massive Strictly Ballroom fan, this was one book I couldn't miss. Jem says it's one of her top five favourite films and it's definitely one of my top five too. I can quote the whole film without blinking, I love it so much. I've only got to hear the opening bars of The Blue Danube and I shout 'Come on, a hundred' if I'm at home and whisper it if I'm elsewhere. It's just so joyous, warm and funny.
Darcy and Nick's story follows Strictly Ballroom enough to resemble it but not slavishly. It's a loving tribute to a beloved film and I enjoyed it every glorious step of the way (pun intended).
I'm not going to say any more about this book except, if you loved the film, cancel any plans, lock the door, turn off your phone and settle in with a cup of tea and your e-reader. If you haven't seen the film, read this and then be prepared to immediately set aside another ninety-five minutes in the company of Scott, Fran, Federation President Barry Fife, Ken Railings and the rest of the fabulous cast of Baz Luhrmann's masterpiece.
