She wasn't usually so uncertain and afraid

Never before had Lana let a man affect her this way--but like it or not, Philip had changed her life. Even her exciting success in New York's fashion world couldn't lift her depression.

Confronting Philip with an ultimatum about racing hadn't been sensible. It had only placed an intolerable strain on both of there. And soon he would tire of trying to change her mind.

Lana knew she couldn't bear the constant anguish and fear while Philip risked his life. Yet had she really made the right decision about the only man she'd ever loved?

RE Danger Zone - MK brings us a story of love in conflict with dangerous living and also gives us an ingenious little twist on the usual HP May/December relationship.

The h is a 22yr old English diplomat's daughter transplanted to New York. She is also a very talented fashion designer and wants to produce her own clothes instead of just selling her designs. She will earn a lot more if she has her own fashion house and her dad steers her to the H, who is a huge international financier.

She gets a meeting set up and it is clear that the h is really serious about her career. She is described as classy and beautiful and her diplomat dad wants her to marry a rich man and have grandkids, but she really wants to be a big designer and she has a lot of talent. She goes to the meeting and meets the financier and he turns out to be the most beautiful man she has ever seen, but he appears to be in his mid thirties and way, way out of her dating league.

They start discussing the potential for him backing her business, she has done a lot of research and knows her stuff, but then he points out that she has expensive tastes - she recently bought a baby blue Porsche and her clothes aren't off the rack, a business start up requires a lot of dedication and maybe some poverty while waiting for it to take off. The h is a little put out, she was hoping to charm him as she has so many other men, but when he asks for her entire savings to start off with for planning her company, she gives him a check with almost no hesitation. The H then tears it up and announces he will help her, as she seems very committed to her business plans.

He also asks her out on a date and the h isn't sure it is appropriate, but she agrees. They go out and the h has a great time, which worries her, cause she needs to be career focused and the H is a bit too attractive. They meet again to go over the business plans and the H kisses her after giving her a rare Spanish coin he uncovered on a dive for buried treasure. She tries to give it back, cause the H implies her kisses are for sale, but he insists she keep it and he also invites her to see him race - he is doing the US racing circuit as a way to advertise his London Merchant banks new US division.

The h isn't into racing, but he asks her out again for the evening before the race and the h agrees to go. They go out again and again the h has a really, really great time and danger signals are over the place for her, cause she is liking the H way too much and it is obvious he is liking her back. They get into passionate kissing, but the H draws back.

The h decides to go to the race and takes her friend with her for moral support. The h's friend is happy to see her dating, but when she meets the H, she warns the h that he is out of her league as the h appears to be so much younger than him. Then the H crashes during the race and the car burns up with the H in it. He isn't seriously injured, but the h is shell shocked. She begs the H to stop racing and he explains that he can't, he has too much invested in money and potential advertising to call it off. The h breaks up with him and the h's friend asks her to reconsider, cause it is obvious the H is wild about her.

The h has already lost her mum to cancer when she was 13 and her dad has been missing her all the years since. She doesn't want to lose another close relationship and especially not for something that she considers deliberately throwing one's life away for the sake of a little pointless excitement. She decides to focus on getting her business together, but she has to meet with the H to do it.

The next several weeks are unrequited longing with the H trying to change her mind about being with him and her holding out to stay single every time they meet. The h is miserable, though being a big success at NYC's Autumn Fashion week helps ease the pain a little, as well as her father's unconditional approval and announcement that she doesn't HAVE to get married.

Then the h winds up getting into a big car crash. She occasionally plays tennis with the son of a big NYC socialite and he insists on driving her Porsche every time, she doesn't like it but to be mannerly, she lets him. This time he gets into a race and won't slow down when the h is telling him to, he loses control and wrecks the car and the h is unconscious for three days.

She wakes up to hear the H telling the OM off and threatening him with dire consequences -finally a bad person gets some comeuppance in an HP. The H rushes to declare his love as soon as he realizes the h is awake and he vows he has given up racing - he couldn't appreciate how she felt until he lived through it himself. The h is ecstatic, the H is ecstatic and the h's dad is happy cause the H asked him if he could marry his daughter first, so he is getting his grandkids now and he knew in advance.

There is a nice little bit where we see the h and H being happy together and in the final twist we find out that the H is only about 28 or 29, he became a millionaire playing the Stock Market and bought the bank at 23 and became really successful over the next six years when he met the h - he just looks older cause his face is craggy and his hair started graying early. Not that it matters by this point, as these two are so in love, but it was an nice surprise and a great HEA.

This is a nice book with an intelligent h, an H that is pretty nice without being either a wimp or a jerk and leaves the feeling that these two really will be a long term marriage. The age difference isn't really there by the end and it was a refreshing take on the usual May/December situation. Pick this up when you want a nice, satisfying HEA and you won't be disappointed.

The heroine is too beautiful for words, so when she goes to the Hero to ask for a business loan, he asks her out on a date. After 2 dates and no sex, they are suddenly in a serious relationship. The Hero, apart from being a successful merchant banker, is also a race car driver. He gets in a crash and won’t bow down to the ultimatum of the heroine, to stop racing, so she breaks it off with him. BTW, this is their 3rd date! Speed of light much?

This all happens at barely halfway point, so the rest of the book are her introspections on the relationship, or her discussing him with her father, it was just one long meander into her boring days. Sometimes she would get together with the Hero for business and end up passionately kissing, but break it off. Even I was frustrated with them.

She gets into a crash, the Hero realises what she goes through when he races, so he gives it up and they can have their HEA.

The whole story felt rushed and shallow. There could have been much more story to the book for the page count. I couldn’t sympathise with either character and I didn’t really care whether they got their happy ending or not. So that’s why the 2 stars.

I did not like the Hero. I did not like the Heroine. The story was not too great either.

‘Oh, darling,’ she moaned, ‘you’re so cruel!’

Sometimes the dialogue was so melodramatic.

And I didn’t like that he said to her that he hopes she doesn’t get fat through him.

Not only was the story nothing but repetition (she wants him to stop racing, he won't do it) but it was also one of those "insult your intelligence" ones that make me want to SCREAM!!! The H became a self-made millionaire at 23??? The h becomes a top fashion designer at 22???

OH, COME ON!!!!!

BTW: I started investing in the stock market when I was 5, by grammar school I had quite an impressive portfolio and in middle school I became a financial advisor for my teachers. I bought a yacht at 16, and mansion at 17 and a plane and helicopter at 18, and I'm an expert pilot at both. I also won skydiving medals, took up diving as a hobby and discovered a lost ship full of treasure, started my own investment company, did some fashion modeling on the side (made several magazine covers), wrote a best seller and took time out to visit the Dali Lama. And all before my 20th birthday!

Gee, I could be a HP character!

cw: car racing accident

Nothing much happened in this one. The plot relied on the conflict that was internal. The heroine doesn’t want to date a man who risks his life race car driving and that’s pretty much all there was to this Harlequin. It’s still a pretty decent read, just not great.
