Comrade Wolf

Rate this book
Life was very pleasant, thought Susan Cheyne, as she walked through the grounds of her father's villa in Switzerland. She had completed her survey on coastal pollution for the International Geophysical Committee, and she could look forward to a few days' holiday before returning to England to write up the report, and to see Joe Dowson again - the man she had met so recently and who shared so many of her interests. But her pleasant daydreaming turned into a nightmare when she was suddenly kidnapped - by a man they called Wolf - a green-eyed, dark-haired man who was the most handsome man she had ever seen; and the most dangerous...

I skimmed it long ago and must have blocked it out because it was so gross. An industrialist's daughter gets kidnapped and abused by a group of communist radicals. One of them, a female terrorist, is particularly vicious to her and even sets her up to be raped by one of the "comrades." Heroine is saved at the last minute by Wolf, the "hero" of the piece. Later, after she is released, we find out Wolf naturally was working under cover the whole time. This included sexing up the female terrorist as well as other dubious practices which made this whole story barftastic. I have to go take a shower now :(

I'd read this book in the 80's, but I didn't remember the title of this book and its thanks to RomLibrary's help that I got the book's name. This is what I had written while requesting for help. (And in brackets is the update after re-reading the book)

Help: I’m looking for help in locating a book.......

The book is set in Europe.
The heroine is a heiress and kidnapped and held for ransom. Unbeknownst to her, The Hero has already infiltrated the gang. (I think the Hero’s niece has also been kidnapped - but not too sure). The heroine falls for her captor. A bit of Stockholm syndrome. They are overcome by the love force and come together in a fit of passion. He is called Wolf by the gang members. There’s a female gang member with whom the Hero is “forced” to have physical relationship. I remember this bit because she taunts the heroine over this. The heroine is rescued and returned to her father. A month or so later she finds out that her ordeal has left her with a “Little Gift” of the nine month variety. The heroine’s father and the doctor are concerned about her. Then suddenly there are unexpected visitors. A businessman and his sister from the very wealthy Santanaya family (Or some similar sounding name). Explanations are given and they have their HEA!!

This was bizarre. The hero was an ultra violent left-wing murderer (spoiler - he wasn’t), but the heroine believed this for 160 pages! She spent most of the book kidnapped and locked in a cell. The hero slept with another woman.

On the plus side, this was the first M&B where the heroine attacks and nearly murders the hero. I was impressed.

It’s only getting 2 stars for the total lack of mills and boon silliness. The writing itself was fine, and the heroine seemed resourceful, but as a mills and boon, it was rubbish.

Stockholm syndrome.

Sorry that's the first thing that comes to mind when reading this book lol. They never actually name it by name, but it's 100% about a woman getting Stockholm syndrome with one of her kidnappers, a fanatical political group.

Heroine is a marine biologist who recently finished a study on the impacts of industry on coastal environments. And also the daughter of a wealthy industrialist of some sort. Maybe a magnate? Anyhow, she's on a break from marine biologing to visit her father in Switzerland, I think, when she is kidnapped by said fanatical political group, taken to a separate location, roughed up, had her hair nearly shaved and dyed platinum blond, and given filthy clothing. One of the kidnappers had pretty green eyes, and seemed not like the others, and this is the one who transports her several hundred miles south into Italy in the back of an armoured vehicle or something.

He's kinder to her than the others and slips her a radio to listen to, but still won't even allow her to stay up front where it's warm and she just rattles around in the back for a while.

She ends up in a farmhouse in a remote area, locked up in a cellar with no windows, and unfortunately the sadistic other members of this group show up. H is not always there, and they treat her badly. She's there for idk like a few weeks I think? And on her last day there, the H takes her out to a remote place for a picnic. She's starting to lose it and she attempts to kill him so she can steal his vehicle and escape (not that that isn't sane, just that she's not a violent person and he IS the only kidnapper who's treated her even remotely nicely). This fails, but they fall into a passionate clinch and end up doing the deed immediately after (which, I mean they both had bruises, bruised ribs, he had a strangle mark around his neck, etc.).

Then she's being rescued and no one seems to know anything about "Comrade Wolf"- the investigation into the political group that kidnapped her did not find anything about such a person, so for the next several weeks, h is guarded 24-7 until they find him....

Until one night she comes home and he's just there in her apartment. He tells her he was more or less "in the neighborhood" and "dropped by" lol.

So h has feelings for him, I think they bump uglies, and then the next morning he's gone again. He may or may not have hinted that things were not all they seemed, but can't recall.

Anyhow a few weeks go by, h realizes she's preggers, and H shows up again but this time her guard dude knows he's in there.

So yeah H reveals his niece was also kidnapped by this group several weeks before him. So he secretly infiltrated their organization to rescue his niece; about that time, he realized they were going to kidnap h, so he got himself involved with that operation to try to protect her at the same time as rescuing his niece. He was the one who finally tipped off the police to get the h rescued, which I think prolonged his niece's imprisonment as she was moved somewhere else, and he had been off tracking her down in between and didn't know if he would succeed, or be killed or captured or even imprisoned by the cops as they didn't realize he was a good guy.

Anyway HEA the end.

This would have been much better if the whole kidnapping had been dealt with in the first third of the book. And the rest being them getting to know one another and the H wooing the h. Not as much angst as I had thought.
