Rate this book

Three Bullets follows the investigation of Abbie Flynn, a young girl who is brutally attacked at the town train station. When Detective Inspector Patrick Rhodes is assigned the case, he can find a no more fitting suspect than Daniel Stone. As both men become increasingly immersed in the Flynn case, and gradually uncover the truth, they find themselves equally controlled by private demons that threaten to consume their every waking moment.

Am I the first person to find it strange that a book can have a 5-star rating based solely on input from the author and the book's 'publisher'? I hope that in time as Three Bullets becomes more widely read and reviewed - as it deserves to be - a true rating will emerge.
This book is an excellent example of the positives and negatives of self-publishing. On the plus side it's a page-turning, police procedural with an enticing basic premise. It's a good read and merits publication on this basis but, of course, in the crowded 'buyer's market' it wouldn't get past the first base in the mainstream publishing process because nobody has heard of Gavin Jones.
On the negative side there are occasional typos, errors in syntax, and strange metaphors and similes that jolt the reader out of the enjoyable experience that it should have been. The book needed a sympathetic, independent edit and a proofread. A mainstream editor wouldn't have issued a book with these issues and would certainly have done better than the stock-picture, flimsy cover.
But I'm being over-critical because inside the story Kidderminster-based detective Patrick Rhodes makes an interesting hero and his investigation is covered realistically. Gavin Jones has a good ear for dialogue and builds the tension well. The idea that underpins the shock ending is plausible and handled very competently.
I took the book on holiday and it was an enjoyable read.

‘Three Bullets’ is a great read! From the start, I was drawn in trying to think about what it would feel like to be dead. What senses do you have left…if any? Jones brings to life a twisting tale that leaves you trying to solve the mystery along with the characters. At times, I felt like I was watching an episode of Law in Order: Criminal Intent. I even sat up some nights thinking about what could happen next. I hated to put the book down!
I do have to admit, I was in a few spots, confused by the change in point of views without any notice. But I quickly jumped into the next characters’ mind and was still able to follow along with the story.
Well done Gavin Jones!
I’m looking forward to more of this author’s work.
I received my copy of 'Three Bullets’ from the publisher for my honest review.
