"When a woman tells the truth she is creating the possibility for more truth around her" wrote Adrienne Rich in her book On Lies, Secrets, and Silence, a book of prose writings from the 70s. The title of this creative collection is taken from that quote.
Once upon a time ago in 1979, when I read Rich's book, I was an idealistic & rebellious 21-year-old feminist & found it very powerful. But this is not a review of that book only to say that then, I had zero thoughts of becoming an older woman.
And now here I am, in many ways the same woman, but wiser & 46 years older. It is an absolute honor to read the honest, insightful & often humorous storytelling of the lives of older-than-me women. I found it inspirational & to be honest, a tiny bit terrifying. Now, I occasionally have thoughts of growing older, but this anthology is a reminder that I am closer than I think, & less terrified than I thought.
Still, there is plenty of time for learning new things, discovering hidden gems within myself. I will continue to be a strong woman, a grateful woman, despite the grief & sadness, deaths of dear ones, despite the physical aspects of aging (of which I am blessed to have few thus far) & to look toward the unknown future of my life that remains to be lived.
I am grateful to editors Dena & Wilma for gathering these poems & stories. Like your mothers, my mother would have also enjoyed reading it very much.
