First off, the book is not written by Brett Harrison. It is a compilation of the passions and opinions of over 70 writers. (Full disclosure, I'm one of them. But I feel free to give my opinion on the work as my contribution amounted to essays on three films out of over a hundred). The work is edited by Aaron (Dr. AC) Christensen, a pro actor and writer who knows more about the horror, monster, fantasy genres of film than a normal person ought. If you have a passion for things that go bump in the night, or are considering developing one. Or, if you'd just like a good read, you can't do much better than this! I just read it again myself for the third time.
I picked this up, not really realizing it wasn't just a list of movies to watch with descriptions. Some of the essays were very good, but most of them felt like an exercise in using as many adjectives as possible and were arranged in a very loose, unhelpful way. The selections were excellent, however, and I haven't seen most of them, which surprised me. I also realized many of the modern movies I've seen are adaptations of older films.
A very strong cover. But what about the lesson we learn inside? The author did a great job here summing up all the quintessential horror film everybody in class should watch this term (lol): Child's Play, Carrie, Dracula, Exorcist, Friday 13th, Halloween, Nightmare on Elm Street, Omen, Ringu, Shining... well chosen movie stills and excellent essays why that movie is something special. This is it. A must read. Highly recommended!
