Why oh why do Wizards always feel compelled to dabble in the unknown? To conjure up THINGS that are best left alone??? This book starts precisely with that, Widon did just that, opening up a portal and tiny creatures came through, terrified tiny creatures and something far far larger..Chris gets his audience captivated right at the onset of every book he writes, he certainly has my attention! And the best part? He keeps it for the duration of the book, drawing me further into the story, further into the superb world he has created. Two worlds actually, both suspicious of the other, both wanting to annihilate the other, both loathing the other. Which is what makes Kase and Brell the most unlikely of companions, the most unlikely of allies. Yet they are, not without their distrust of the other though, but a grudging acceptance of their differences.
The characters are so cool but Rumcole is just the coolest! Love him to bits! He might technically be a dog but... he's a genius! He comes up with the most brilliant plans, no lie, he really does! I loved discovering what he was, a real treat! Oh goodness has Kase come a long way! I thoroughly enjoy his character, which can be very trying for the people around him, he concocts all sorts of ideas, which inevitably, gets him into all sorts of trouble, and leads him to adventures he could never have envisished. His primary goal, find his mom, but that's not so easy and good golly, everything he goes through is so challenging! And what he learns....yeah, his brain can't process! Reunion after reunion, each one blowing his mind, sets him off to his shenanigans once more, but now, the stakes are immense! His beginnings as a thief to hero, to wanted man weren't without mishaps though, but he DID save the master mage...he DID get a pardon, which totally put many noses out of joint! He's used to ducking and diving, but this time, everyone is braying for Brell's blood! His too, but she's a loose cannon who needs, well, you know, elimination. She's so likeable, she's got a conscience, which is why she opted out of being just a kill switch and good golly does she have a lot of baggage! Oh boy, when she comes face to face with her old crew, sparks sure do fly! I love her sense of righteousness, her slow acceptance of magic, her steadfast support of Kase.
Chris is oh so talented in putting out tiny snippets of information, like breadcrumbs that line a path for me to follow, my eyes glued, searching for the next morsel. And when he does allow me to find it, to add another piece together, he steers me, almost teasing me, compelling me to seek further, seek more. This book and series is the perfect blend of magic, ancient evil, artifacts, sci-fi, technology and sheer awesomeness! And I seriously can't wait to join Kase, Brell and Rumcole for more adventures!
