I am a bit shell shocked by this one, but damn, it was powerful.

It was honestly hard to read at some points (for content) yet I couldn't look away. It's the kind of raw pain that makes your skin itch and feel dirty while reading it. The hits just kept coming and there were parts in this story where I didn't know how we could make it out in one piece. That is the type of tension and anxiety that makes me love Dark Romance.

Honestly, the only way I can read stories like this, watching characters be abused and brutalized, is that I know the HEA is on the horizon. No matter how dark the night, hope comes with the morning.

Kinleigh is in the middle of one such night. She has no one on her side and is suffering under her evil father. She was forced to break up with her childhood sweetheart almost ten years ago and nothing has been right since. She lives only to find a way to take her father down.

Colton left his home when Kinleigh broke his heart. He couldn't bear to keep living next door to her and not have her. So he is very reluctant to come back to town but his father has died and his sister begs him for help. It doesn't take long for him to end up on Kinleigh's doorstep. Though not for the reason you might think and ending up a prisoner in the cellar wasn't on his bingo card either.

Now Kin and Colt are in a dangerous dance with the devil breathing down their neck. There is still love and passion but it's tainted and damaged by time and evil. The things they had to endure to get to their HEA were BRUTAL. Please, please, please heed the TWs. If it's listed, assume it BAD ya'll.

This book felt like a cross between Pam Godwin's Deliver series AND her Trails of Sin. I was horrified and moved at the same time.

Really my only detraction is that the last act felt a bit... unbalanced to me. After what Colton and Kinleigh go through... I needed a bit more of time with them together. We see a peek at them using intimacy and sex to work through their trauma but it was too rushed for me. If we're going to explore the types of situations that they survived and have sex be the outlet to work through it, I needed to see more of the messy bits as they work through it. They used sex to communicate while in captivity and I wanted to see them unpack that once they were free.

Anyway, I went deeper into this review than I normally would but that's because I was so impressed and there is SO much potential for what this pen name of Daisy Jane's can do. I am a deep believer that kink and BDSM can help heal. I love seeing that portrayed in romance but especially in Dark Romance.

Final note: Yes this is a duet. But Kinleigh and Colton to have an HEA in this book. Book 2 will be about a different couple from what I can tell. So no need to wait until that one releases before diving in.

4 stars
4 on the spice scale

CW: forced sterilization, infertility, kidnapping, sex trafficking, inter family rape, torture, and dub con.

I’m honestly not even sure where to start this review. This is probably the hardest, most heartbreaking story I’ve ever read. I can’t count the amount of times I cried while reading this. Though this story maybe fiction, it’s soooooooo many people’s reality! Human trafficking is one of the largest “businesses” worldwide. The United States leads the world sadly.

I feel so connected to Kinleigh and Colton. I felt everything with them as they went through it. If I didn’t have kids I would have read this in one sitting, even with the extremely tough subject matter. This gives the world the tiniest of glimpse into the horrors human trafficking victims face. I think this is a book is one everyone should read. Being uncomfortable and forcing people to open their eyes! It happens everywhere and turning a blind eye won’t change that!

Where There's A Will is book one in the Conway Collateralduet.

Kinleigh
Colton rescued me when we were young.
He breathed life into me during our years together...
Before I was forced to sever ties.
No matter how much it hurt, no matter how much I hated it--
I had no choice. Because my father, Forrest Conway, gets what he wants. At all costs.
When Colton turns up ten years later... in my father's cellar, as a captive, he doesn't just want to be set free, but he wants to rescue me, too.
Again.
The thing is, I'm not the only one who needs rescuing.
And I'd give my life to save theirs.
Will he let me?

Colton
I've lived the last ten years believing I'm a bad brother and a no-good boyfriend. Not good enough to keep, at least.
My father's passing brings me back home to Buffalo Trails, to the graveyard of my lost love.
What I learn while I'm "home" is terrifying.
And that's before I'm taken captive.
Things only get worse from there.
Until I see her.
Kinleigh Conway. My heart and soul.
Thin. Bruised. Not speaking.
I know no matter how bad I have it, I'll fight until the end to save her.
It's the only choice.

ARC review for 'Where There's a Will' by Ember Hughes

I must admit, I find it challenging to start this review. This book is undeniably the most difficult and heart-wrenching story I've ever encountered.

It is a striking debut in the dark romance genre - intense and unrelenting. It reignited my passion for this genre but also laid bare the harsh and brutal realities that such stories can contain. Despite the warning signs that typically make me wary, I found myself drawn inexorably through the narrative like a lone survivor in a desolate landscape.

At many peaks throughout the story, I was discomforted, yet strangely captivated. Human trafficking, a grim reality on a global scale, is tackled head-on in this tale, providing a glimpse into the unspeakable horrors endured by its victims, especially women and children.

The narrative revolves around Kinleigh and Colton, whose initial youthful love is shattered by unexpected events, leading to a cascade of tragic consequences. As their intertwined pasts unfurl, shedding light on their choices, the devastation deepens.

The use of dual perspectives and alternating timelines adds a dynamic layer to the storytelling, requiring readers to navigate between past and present seamlessly.

The story begins with Colton's return after a decade of absence, prompted by his father's passing and a crisis on the family farm. Unraveling the mysteries surrounding his father’s land exposes him to perilous circumstances, culminating in a harrowing ordeal that tests his resilience.

The narrative delves into the depths of human depravity as Colton discovers that Kinleigh, his past love, is ensnared in the same ordeal. Witnessing her degradation at the hands of malevolence is a chilling experience, evoking a visceral response of disbelief and horror.

The unimaginable suffering endured by Kinleigh showcases the author's skill in portraying raw, unflinching realism. The dark and merciless tone permeates the narrative, plunging both protagonists into a maelstrom of trauma and despair. My heart ached for Kinleigh, silenced by her torment yet finding solace in fleeting moments of connection with Colton.

While the book concludes with a semblance of hope for Kinleigh and Colton, unresolved mysteries linger, leaving a sense of foreboding for what lies ahead, particularly concerning Colton's sister.

In conclusion, this book delivers an intense and emotional journey fraught with darkness and anguish. It delves into the depths of human suffering with unflinching honesty, making it a compelling and haunting read.

I didn't know that I need Daisy Jane to write a dark romance until this book!😍

🌟 5/5

🛑 Look at the author's trigger warning!!!

‼️ While this book could be read as a standalone, this is book 1 of the Conway Collateral Duet series.

ℙ𝕆𝕍: first person, dual perspectives

𝕄𝕪 𝕋𝕙𝕠𝕦𝕘𝕙𝕥𝕤:
Not every writer can write dark romance. When @authordaisyjane stated that she was going to be writing a dark romance under a different pen name, I knew she'd go above all my expectations. I need someone to pinch me because this book was unreal!😍

Y'all, I already stated it above, but check those triggers if anything triggers you. This book won't be for everyone. Think, Still Beating by Jennifer Hartmann, for reference. 🥺

Kinleigh and Colton need to be placed on a pedestal. This couple goes through the unimaginable and still makes it out together. While this book isn't SUPER spicy, the spice does steam up the windows when it happens. These precious babies need the world!❤️

As most of you know, I'm not usually a fan of timeline changes. I appreciated that the backstory was included without having to live through ALL of what both the MCs do. Those little glimpses were enough to both make me swoon and sadden me.

Thank you to the author for an ARC! That cliffhanger was not expected!🤯🤯🤯

description

This was some debut! What a way to start a writing career! The blurb and teasers intrigued me to follow this book to the release date and boy was it a powerful ride. We meet a boy and his heart is broken by the love of his life, making him leave town. He then returns 10 years later by the word of his father's passing.

What Colton uncovers when he arrives is puzzling and strange. He ventures into the place where his heart is broken for answers, only to be captured and kept at his will. When his eyes meet his true love Kinleigh, she is a shell of the person she once was. She's been through too much and words can no longer be expressed. What happened on this land and continues to happen, is brutal and it is awful. As the book progresses, together they make good on their promises for the future but it isn't without patience, love and strength. Shared POV, ends in a cliffhanger that will make you question a few things.

The warnings in this book aren't for the average reader, they are brutal, disturbing and horrid. Was this a nice book? I'm not sure. Was their story to be told? Probably. Ember kicked ass in writing this story, it was brave, taking risks and I'm intrigued to see where her future books go. Proceed with caution if warnings aren't your jam, but if they are, buckle up and enjoy.

I do not have a lot to say, honestly.  Because nothing will do it the justice it deserves.
This book truly speaks for itself.  It was incredibly written. The suspense, the horrors written, had me in tears. I can not fathom anyone dealing with the things that both Colton and Kinleigh deal with throughout this book and yet still have the strength to continue fighting for survival.

Well written, well thought out book and really pulled on the heartstrings

5 traumatic 🌶️s🥲

Listen…I’m still thinking and processing all the emotions I went through reading this book. I was not expecting it to be so raw and emotional, but it has definitely made an impact on me when It comes to the characters journeys🥺

Colton NEVER gave up on Kinleigh. Their love for each other is literally what kept them going when they found themselves in a very sticky situation. One look from each other and they could literally transport themselves to somewhere else entire to find some kind of mental escape. I BAWLED my eyes out at the things Kinleigh went through, and she was still able to keep her sanity😭😭

When Colton realized what struggles Kinleigh was going through with her dad, I felt like his heart broke and it made me so so sad😭

The endinggggg, BRUTAL. I stared at a wall immediately after finishing his book lmao🥹

This wasn't for me. Don't get me wrong it was dark and twisted and I am a fan of that. This had the chance of being something good, the idea of what the story was about drew me in but when all the MC's can think of is having spicy time while being kept prisoners, that is where it fell off for me. It did have it moments I liked the flashbacks of how the MC's came to be from childhood friends that developed into more.

I would say the ending leads perfectly into the next one.

DNF around 25%

I will come back to this!! I really want to finish this one.

The story just had a very different tone than I was expecting. Even from the start, the writing has a very somber tone and a bit eerie. We start to see what is actually happening by the 25% mark and I just wasn't sure I wanted to continue right now. I still want to finish it when I am in the mood for something heavier and darker.

Make sure you read the tw for these and take them seriously because they happen often and are very prominent to the story.

Saying that my heart broke so many times for what Colton and kinsleigh has to experience and go through. From their first heartbreak to everything in between they truly deserve a happy ending.

I ate this book up and found myself pausing a few times to process what was happening because it was just so heartbreaking.

I will say the ending felt a bit off from the rest of the book, I know it needed to wrap up and answer questions but it felt rushed and also went from barely any spice to constant spice. Otherwise it was a great read.

Right out the gate I want to let you know this story has a few unsettling trigger warnings. Please read my review with caution. Ember Hughes is Daisy Jane’s dark romance pen name, and I will shout it from the rooftops — these are two distinct artists and pieces of work.

This story is a dark cowboy romance, and contains a few triggers that are starkly different than some I’ve run into in other contemporary dark romances: rape (on page, by a family member, more than once, including sodomy with a weapon), forced infertility, vivid physical violence (on page).

Other triggers included are: imprisonment and severe beatings, deprivation of food/water, FMC mutism, discussions of trafficking and sexual servitude.

The story begins with an introduction to Colton Beckett, a rancher who left home 10 years prior. While working in Texas he receives a phone call from his younger sister Carsyn that their father has died. She’s worried about the family ranch she’s lived on with their father. She alludes to the ranch being in trouble. Colton is hesitant about returning home - he hasn’t been back since Kinleigh Conway broke his heart.

Kinleigh has lived with her father, Forrest Conway, and as she became older her father had groomed her in such a way that she, very regretfully, has done his bidding for the last 10 years. His power and hold over her is revealed as the story progresses and she is every bit as victim as the trafficked women and children are. There is a disgusting network that exists in Forrest Conway’s world; and unbeknownst to Colton and Carsyn their father was tangled in it.

What Ember does very well is building this family and community of Buffalo Trails, Wyoming with care and detail. The plot is like a carefully crafted puzzle; each detail interlocks with the next to build the picture, and the background building is what leads to a clearer understanding when you finally meet Kinleigh.

The intensity of this story was difficult to stomach at times. I could feel Colton’s despair as he went days without eating and drinking, when he was beaten and left alone in the dark, and when he learned that Kinleigh had developed mutism and refused to speak. When Forrest is degrading her and raping her, I found myself seeking the mental headspace that Kinney herself had to slip into during those devastating moments. As dark as those moments were, Ember wrote a beautiful headspace for Kinney to escape to.

Ember gave Kinney and Colton tenderness in contrast to the vileness that is Forrest Conway. These scenes were difficult to read, and were counterbalanced by the shared dream Kinney and Colton begin to bond over. They share hope for freedom, symbolized throughout the entirety of the book by a field of dandelions where they would escape to as children and Kinney would build dandelion chains.

This story is not all darkness, but it will take you routinely to some of the darkest spaces. Ember didn’t leave us hanging though — there is some serious spice between Colton and Kinney (both in the dark and in the light). The scenes of their lovemaking are gorgeous and handled with trauma informed care. This HEA in this story is well-earned. I finished reading knowing that there is more to come (ooof, is there ever!)

Book Review: Where There's a Will by Ember Hughes

Where There's a Will by Ember Hughes is a gripping dark romance that plunges readers into a world of trauma, resilience, and unwavering love. This book is not for the faint of heart, as it dives deep into heavy and disturbing themes, but for those who appreciate intense emotional narratives and complex characters, it’s a story that will linger long after the last page.

The novel centers on Kinleigh Conway and Colton, two souls who are intertwined by a past that neither can forget. Colton is introduced as a protector, a beacon of light in Kinleigh’s dark world during their youth. His rescue of Kinleigh years ago is both heartwarming and tragic, setting the stage for a love that is as enduring as it is fraught with pain. However, the weight of their separation—and the sinister force of Kinleigh’s father, Forrest Conway—casts a long shadow over their lives.

When Colton returns a decade later, only to find himself a captive in Forrest Conway's cellar, the narrative takes a harrowing turn. The tension is palpable as Colton’s fight for survival and Kinleigh’s struggle against the horrors that have kept her bound are brought to the forefront. Hughes excels at portraying the raw intensity of their connection, even as they both grapple with the scars of their past.

Kinleigh's character is particularly compelling. Her silent suffering and the physical and emotional abuse she endures are portrayed with a sensitivity that highlights her strength and determination to protect those she loves. Colton’s journey, too, is one of redemption and rediscovery. His guilt and self-doubt make him a deeply sympathetic character, and his unwavering commitment to Kinleigh adds depth to their relationship.

The narrative is not without its dark moments, and the author doesn’t shy away from exploring themes of captivity, abuse, and the psychological scars they leave behind. The content warnings are essential reading for anyone considering this book, as the story delves into intense and potentially triggering topics. However, Hughes handles these elements with care, ensuring that the trauma serves the narrative and character development rather than being gratuitous.

The writing is evocative and immersive, drawing readers into the bleak and oppressive atmosphere that Kinleigh and Colton inhabit. The pacing is tight, with each chapter adding layers to the suspense and emotional stakes. The tension builds to a crescendo as the story hurtles towards its climax, keeping readers on the edge of their seats.

In conclusion, Where There's a Will is a powerful, if dark, romance that explores the limits of love and the human spirit. Ember Hughes crafts a story that is both heartbreaking and hopeful, with characters that are sure to resonate with readers who appreciate deeply emotional and intense narratives. This book is a testament to the resilience of love in the face of overwhelming odds, and while it is a challenging read, it is also a profoundly rewarding one. Just be sure to heed the content warnings before diving in.

“WHERE THERE’S A WILL” EMBER HUGHES ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 🌶️🌶️🌶️/5

I saw this book when I was scrolling through Amazon one day and the cover intrigued me, so I checked out the synopsis and it sounded like my kind of read, so I grabbed a copy! After reading, I can say that I’m not too sure how I felt about it! The plot only took me a few sittings to read and it did keep me interest and wanting to read on and find out what was going to happen next! I also don’t think I’ve read a dark romance cowboy book before, so that made this book different! The plot had some action and suspense in it, which added to it and created more of an atmosphere! There was a lot of romance in the plot and it was a second chance relationship, but in difficult circumstances! The romance allowed for some steamy scenes between the main characters! The characters were also great and made this book even better! Kinleigh was the main female character, and in this book she was left with a father who abused her and kept her on a short leash! My heart went out to Kinleigh because it was like she had lost all hope that she would be free! Colton changed things for Kinleigh and it was amazing to see her become her own person again after what she had been through! Colton was the main male character and love interest of Kinleigh! Colton found himself kidnapped in this book and I felt like he tried his best in the situation he was in! I had a lot of respect for Colton because he refused to give up and leave Kinleigh behind! It was easy to see how much Kinleigh meant to Colton and he had a past with her and they both supported each other! This book was written from both Kinleigh and Colton’s point of views! The synopsis does give the impression that it’s going to be written this way, so I wasn’t that surprised! I loved that it was written from both characters point of views because it helped me connect more with the two of them and see how they were dealing with what they were going through! It allowed for more things to happen in the plot as well, which helped as Kinleigh and Colton didn’t spend every second of the plot together and they both went through their own situations! I now can’t wait to read the next book in this series! I know who the main characters are going to be and I’m very excited to read it and find out more about the characters! The ending of this book has left me even more excited for it! I’m not sure when the next book releases because I can't find any information on it, but I’ll definitely be waiting for it! The cover for this book is also absolutely perfect for it! It’s initially what drew me to the book when I saw it and made me check it out! It really suits the feel of the book and the cowboy theme!

Dark, gritty & heartbreakingly tragic. An incredible debut dark romance from Ember Hughes!

This story follows Colt as he returns home
after his father’s death. Upon his return he finds out that his ex’s father owns his family property due to a gambling addiction and debt he accrued before his passing. When Colt investigates this on enemy property he is captured and tortured. There he see’s the love of his life after many years and sees the abuse first hand that she has endured. Kinleigh has been through unspeakable things in the years since Colt left. She was forced to end things with him unbeknownst to Colt, which was what drove him away from home. Now, she is willing to do whatever it takes to get him out of her basement and back to his life, while also helping the people that her father has been hurting in the process.

Kinleigh is incredibly brave, resilient, and compassionate. She is truly a fighter and overcomes so much during the duration of this story after the years of abuse she has endured. I’m in awe of her and all she overcomes, not just physically but emotionally. She has been through so much, and it was touching to see Colt come back into her life when she needed him most.

This surpasses the captor/captive narrative due to the shared past between Kinleigh and Colt. Colt has never stopped loving or thinking of Kinleigh. And now that he has a second chance at saving her he won’t let absolutely anything get in his way. Colt opens up Kinleigh to the possibility of hope, love, and second chances. He reminds her of all the good things in life, showing her a glimmer of her life before the abuse and how it could be an option for her again. The emotional growth is incredible in these two characters, and such a beautiful journey to see unfold.

This is an incredibly emotional journey, so get ready. This book has it all, a major plot twist or two, suspense, and romance! Although it is extremely dark, the ending offers so much relief. You see Kin and Colt work through their trauma together, they heal each other, and create the life they always wanted to have. Colt is so incredibly patient with Kinleigh, and Kin acknowledges the trauma Colt went through as well. They receive support from friends and family, and offer that back to those who need it most. I couldn’t help but cry tears of joy at the end after so many deep, emotional, and twisted moments; it was elating to see them get their happily ever after.

Thank you so much to Ember Hughes and the Author Agency for the early copy! This book kept me on the edge of my seat, highly recommend! I cannot wait for Carsyn’s book to see what happens next!

Review:
What a debut! Hold on to your heartstrings folks because this is an intense, dark romance that will leave your palms sweating.

Kinleigh and Colton were childhood friends and sweethearts as they grew to teenagers, only for Colton's heart to be broken when Kin broke things off unexpectedly. Colton's heart in shambles, he leaves and works as a ranch hand for 10 years and then comes back home for his father's funeral. When he looks into Kin's family home for information on his father's dubious debt dealing with Kin's father, Colton gets taken captive in the basement! Human trafficking is the dark secret that Kinleigh's abus1ve father has been dealing for over a decade.

Colton is starved and beaten but is shocked to see an equally emotionally and physically abus3d Kinleigh still living there. They work on a plan for escape, rebuilding their love and lives...if they can.

This was harrowing and a true unabashed decent into the dark topic of human trafficking but also emotional/physical abu3e by a monstrous human being (Kin's father). This wrung my heart out with what these two souls were subjected to. The scenes are full of raw emotion, terrible pain, grit and the steel of human spirit despite the odds.

The way in which Ember manages to lace such a horrific experience with delicate moments of aching beauty and hope, is truly worthy of applause.

This ends on a cliffhanger and boy what a doozy! This couples fight and love for one another is truly them fighting through he'll purely because of their love for one another and it's incredibly poignant and beautiful! If you are ok with the triggers, do not hesitate to read this.

The first installment of The Conway Collateral Duet marks Ember Hughes' debut in the realm of dark romance. It's crucial for readers to heed the trigger warnings provided, as they are prevalent throughout the story and integral to its development. The emotional journey of Colton and Kinsleigh resonates deeply; they endure a tumultuous path filled with sorrow and loss. Their experiences, from the initial heartbreak to the myriad of obstacles that follow, evoke a strong sense of empathy, making it clear that they truly deserve a moment of joy after all they've faced.

In the depths of a haunting night, Kinleigh Conway feels utterly isolated, suffering under the oppressive rule of her sinister father. Nearly ten years have passed since she was forced to part ways with her first love, and since then, her world has been turned upside down. Her sole purpose now is to devise a plan to overthrow her tyrant of a father.

I found myself completely immersed in this novel. The intensity of Colton and Kinsleigh's struggles is palpable, and it’s hard not to feel a connection to their plight. Each twist and turn in their story adds layers to their characters, making their eventual pursuit of happiness all the more poignant. This book is not just a tale of romance; it’s a profound exploration of resilience and the human spirit, leaving a lasting impact on anyone who reads it. This is a captivating read overall. The emotional journey was powerful, and it truly held my attention as I became deeply involved in the characters' experiences.

For a debut novel, this is very well put together. That first chapter is really strong and hooks you right in.
Colton comes across as a bit of a cinnamon roll in the beginning. He's one of those sweet cowboys who doesn't cuss in front of ladies. I find his character to be sweet. He arrives back to town after being away and all the past memories come rushing back. He and his sister also realise that something isn't quite right with what is going on with their ranch and land.
Colton goes to investigate and got a whole lot more than he bargained for. He uncovers some pretty terrible things and gets taken captive in the process. It's here that he discovers his lost love. Please take the warnings in the beginning seriously, because there will be things in here that some may find confronting. It can be a tough read. This author does really well in evoking these feelings and emotions and putting you in that moment.
There were a couple of things that I did question in this story. I personally couldn’t understand what these particular things were happening, and I also felt like there were parts that weren't actually needed.
What progresses from here are two people, two victims, that are really trying to survive this horror that they are going through and trying to come up with a way to escape and help everyone else too.
I do like that we get multiple POV because I did start to wonder there why no one was coming to save Colton.
For a debut novel, this was very well done and had a good storyline. I did feel like there were a few too many inconsistencies with detail in the story, I tend to be a stickler for details, so when things differ, it does bother me.
This will definitely be an author to watch in the future and I am looking forward to reading the next book.

I need the next one STAT!!

This book had me going through so many emotions. One minute I’m anxious to see how this story is going to play out. The next minute I’m physically raging and upset because of everything awful that happened. Then, as the story comes to an end I am so content and happy. BUT THEN, BAM there’s a cliffhanger and I need the next one asap. I’m so beyond invested in this book and I cannot wait to see what the next story will have in store for us.

Colton has been gone from his hometown for the past 10 years. With a frantic call from his sister that his dad has passed, he decides it’s time to come home. However, he doesn’t realize all of the secrets that he’s about to walk into and the captive he’s going to become. Colton had my heart in this book. From the very beginning of this story to the very end, I knew I loved him. His character always tried to stay strong for himself and for Kinleigh. He was just amazing.

Kinleigh has always loved Colton from the very moment they met and even after he left. She has been trying to follow her father’s orders her whole life but finding Colton in her cellar as a captive has changed things. I truly felt so sad for Kinleigh in this book. The things that she witnesses and the things that have happened over the years just hurts my heart. This girl deserves the world and Colton will definitely give it to her. I loved her so much!

This book really held me in its grasp and I never wanted to quit reading. This book is dark and I definitely recommend checking the tw before reading. I know I’m going to love Ember just as much as I love Daisy. I definitely recommend checking this one out.

This book is not for the faint of heart! I really enjoyed it but it was very dark, rough and gut wrenching. I mean that in a very real, raw, and powerful way. Check your triggers before reading. The characters are put through so much and honestly I wasn't sure what to feel sometimes. I was sad, mad, pretty much every emotion I could feel, I did. These are the types of books that get me thinking what would I do if it was me? Would I do the same things that Kinleigh did? Would I be able to move on from this? It's so highly emotional it's almost too overpowering to think about.

The writing is very eloquent. It flows beautifully and is very descriptive. It painted a clear picture of everything Kinleigh and Colton went through. I felt like I was right there in the room with them. I think that made it even more emotional because you couldn't disassociate from it. It was purely in your face and mind all the way through.

I really liked both Kinleigh and Colton. They were pure and genuine. They were believable and acted in a relatively normal way considering their conditions. I loved how honest they were with each other and the devotion they both showed each other. It was beautiful to see despite the darkness around them.

I don't think I have detested a character as much as Forrest. I have to say that the writing was so good at making him so unlikable and despised.

I can't believe that ending!! What is going to happen? I'm glad this ended up being an interconnected standalone so we get some closure while still having a story arc to continue. I enjoyed getting to know all of the characters and I'm invested in all of their stories. I really liked this very dark cowboy romance. It was an emotional read but so worth it in the end! I would definitely recommend it!

I have mixed feelings about this book. The romance parts of the book was well written, but the dark aspects of the book confused me. I don’t think the dark aspects of the book weren’t handled well because with what happened to Kinleigh I would think would make her more hesitant towards sex. Instead she is the one who comes on to Colton without any warning. Colton’s character was interesting. He moved to Texas after graduating high school to get away from Kin and the heartbreak, but even after 10 years he still is in love with her. He has no hard feelings towards Kin or anything like that. Like I said the romance aspect between Colton and Kin was good the comfort they provide each other was nice I don’t understand why it needed to be physical I think it would have been better and made more sense if it wasn’t. The romance that made no sense for me was Gen and Nash mainly because it seemed so immediate. I hope it gets more explained in the next book because rn it just makes no sense. The end of book after the big escape felt like an ending that was meant for no cliffhangers. It felt like it was supposed to be for a nice perfectly wrapped ending. The onLy aspect was we didn’t know where Forrest and Garrison are until the epilogue. Overall the book was decent it was an easy read but there were aspects that could be improved upon.

This review will be shorter than my typical reviews because 1. I have no idea where to start my review. 2. I really don’t want to give too much away for this book.

I will start by saying you absolutely must read the Trigger Warnings for this book. Your mental health matters and is important to the Author and me.

Now with that said this book absolutely broke me. It was so heartbreaking and full of so many dark elements I am pretty sure I chewed all of my nails off from my anxiety while reading this. The characters Colton and Kinleigh are put through so much (especially Kinleigh). What Kinleigh goes through is horrific and nobody should ever have that happen to them. Kinleigh has such a strength to her that you just want to go in the book and rescue her yourself.
Colton is determined to help save his family's ranch. And when he goes over to get dirt on the person who took his property Colton doesn’t expect to wake up where he does or that he would see Kinleigh. But Colton realizes they are both prisoners in their own way and what he witnesses with Kinleigh breaks his heart but makes him determined to do everything he can to save her.

Despite everything Kinleigh has gone through, her strength and devotion was everything. She was willing to put her life on the line to save those she loved the most and strangers even if it cost her her life. We do see how Colton and Kinleigh work on healing each other and processing everything they went through together and that I could appreciate from the author.

With the cliffhanger of this book I am curious to see what happens in the next book

Thank you to the Author Agency for the ARC of this book

I was tricked into reading this book. But glad that I did. The thing is I am not in my cowboy romance era, but it really got me with the “dark romance” marketing. I will be real with y’all.

Dark romance to me means my main characters are unhinged and fvcked up, anti hero/-ine, morally grey or pitch black. Imperfect characters pairing with dark or horror story settings. Butttttttttt….here you will find:

- Very dark subject: yes!

- Characters: NOT dark. They are kind, lovely, righteous, strong, courageous. They have been given a very shitty life (especially the FMC’s - omg all the horrors she is subjected to!!!). MMC is a loyal man who loves FMC to the moon and back, and another round trip. You can count on the your left hand the number of times he swears in this book. He is the perfect knight who shines bright and sweet.

- Steamy scenes: Vanilla. Yes, there are more than a few, but the overall vibe is loving.

- Emotional: very!

- Ends on a cliffhanger but not about the couple…book 2 would need to close out the story bc villains are still out there doing villainous things. And book 2 could even be about another couple.

- Toward the end, i did skim through several chapters coz it felt dragging on…but this is minor.

After years away, Colton is called home to help his sister deal with their father’s passing. Colton finds that the father of the women he loved has had some business with his father. Colton moves to find out what’s going on between the two and finds more than he bargained for. During his search Colton is captured and tortured, but he does find some light, the girl he loved who left him years before, Kinleigh. They are both captives needing to find a way out.

🔥 Dark Romance
🔥 Cowboy Romance
🔥 Trauma Bonding
🔥 Second Chance
🔥 Who Did This To You
🔥 Mute FMC

I will say I did not read the blurb prior to reading this and read only from the tropes. This was so good, but was not at all what I was expecting. This is not a Red Flag MMC Dark Romance this is a Green Flag MMC with a dark plot (please read the trigger warnings). This book had me hooked, I could not put it down. I loved the story line, I thought it was very unique. I loved or loved to hate the characters in this book. Kinleigh suffered years of abuse and trauma by the hands of her father, then has to witness him abusing the love of her life. This is a must read and cannot wait to see what’s in store in There’s A Way.
