The Pucking Grump

Rate this book
What do you do when you find out your step-sister is taking “something borrowed” to a whole new level by borrowing your groom for a quickie?

What any other rockstar in her right mind would do. Run out on the wedding, slamming right into a six-foot-three solid wall of muscle.

Blake White. Pro hockey star. The kind of hot that scrambles your brain and the kind of grumpy that flash freezes the sun.

Reluctantly, he agrees to give me a hiding spot in his remote cabin.

I don’t want to end up in one of your sappy love songs, he warns and tries to keep his distance.

But again and again, he fails miserably.

Soon enough, we’re spotted by the paparazzi. And when all hell breaks loose, he offers me a way out.

I’ll be your fake boyfriend.

But as far as I’m concerned, we’re as real as it gets.

I just have to figure out a way for him to admit it.

I have to start with saying that since this was my first time reading this author, it was pretty good. I would read another for sure. The characters were okay, but I didn't love some relationships and how they progressed throughout the story. The main characters relationship was great. I love the fake relationship trope, but this was even more because the enemies to lovers was great with Blake! God, he really hated her, definitely the best part of it, especially since he didn't really ever give a good reason for it.
What I liked: I loved that the author wrote an easy read. Nothing worse than starting a book that takes you twice as long because you can't understand the language that the author uses. I also liked the storyline, it definitely kept me engaged.
What I didn't like: I really didn't like how I didn't feel any closure from the dad and Faye relationship in the book. Arguments in a book I feel always need a scene when they have the confrontation. There was none of that, no face off between Faye and her dad or even her stepsister, just lots of questions for me still. The story also dragged a little and for me, it felt too long, but not at the same time. I don't even know how to describe it but at times, while reading it, I felt like I wanted to put it down because it felt like a 600 page book, when I knew it wasn't.
what I definitely didn’t understand: what the heck kind of line is, “Fluid drips down my thighs.” Now don’t get me wrong, a s*x scene is more than likely to have something about fluids, or at least bodily functions, I totally understand this, but what I didn’t understand at all, was the fact that she had panties on. fluid would collect before flowing down your thighs. I mean I get it author hyperbolize moments when they really need to, but this to me, was just too far and a little too crass for me.
I don't want anyone believing it was a bad book by any means, but it's not necessarily my normal read. I love finding new authors though and to be honest, I will definitely try another book as soon as I can. But for anyone seeing my review, see for yourself, you just might be the exception and this might be the book that inspires you.

A pop star running away from her loveless wedding and a grumpy hockey player who grudgingly helps her run away!

Faye has lived a lie most of her life, from her "great" love for her fiancé to her bubbly love songs that top the charts. Though, when she sees her fiancé and step-sister in a compromising position (and her father glossing over this incident), she finally decides to take control of her life. This takes her on a one-way collision course to run into a certain hockey player who doesn't believe in love (and who finds pop music annoying).
Faye was a fun character to get to know. She had her life managed by her dad, so she's on a journey to get out from under his oppressive thumb. She has a hidden strength and I loved when she finally showed the world her true stuff!
Blake played the part of grump well! He was unhappy, abrupt, and didn't shy away from cutting remarks. There were times where this did get a little tedious, but it's definitely worth persevering through. I do like his character growth in the story more than Faye's, probably because he has more baggage to overcome.
I really enjoyed Blake and Faye together! They had fun banter and some great chemistry!

This story gave of Taylor and Travis vibes with a dash of Britney and her dad as well. The conservatorship addition seemed a little weird since it'd take more than running away from your wedding to have someone be put in charge of your life/welfare. I liked the Taylor/Travis vibes because they were done better in the story.

This book is actually in a series and I didn't know that going in, but it didn't detract from the story and I was able to enjoy it all on its own. I wasn't confused by any characters and had fun listening to it.

I liked the narrator! She is a new-to-me narrator and I'd definitely listen to other books by her. She did a good job differentiating between the different characters. The story is told in dual POV, and she differentiates her narrating voice from Faye's chapters to Blake's chapters, and I quite liked that because it was an obvious indicator of whose chapter it was. I listened at 1.2x speed.

I liked it alright, but we don’t actually get to know their relationship. I’m not sure how she fell in love with him, since all they seemed to do was screw or avoid each other the entire book.

If I were this girls fan, I’d definitely not trust anything she has to say after she tells everyone two different stories within a month or so of each other.

This is a “hockey romance” but there’s very little hockey in the book. I’d call it a pop star romance. With that said. It felt like there wasn’t much research done into either career. Hockey players do a lot of practicing before they have a game… the game comes up so fast, with hardly any training beforehand. Then on her side of things, there’s months and months of prep before going on a tour. As well as singing a new song. She doesn’t have plans to create a new album, but decides to do a tour at the beginning of a relationship where the guy is starting hockey games. She’s singing new music. But she doesn’t have an album? I’m lost here. There’s a plot hole that I’m drowning in.

And then she does what she does best and runs away again because she didn’t get what she wanted. So she again goes out to sing a new song and admit she’s a liar and then it’s sunshine and roses.

So yeah. It was pretty cute, but the plot holes and no character development or relationship outside of taking off their clothes leaves me wanting more and feeling like I was duped.

Overall, I enjoyed the storyline in this novel. It was engaging and kept my attention. The romance was intense, physically initially, but later emotionally intense as well. Pop star Faye was set to get married in an elaborate event, but catching her fiancé cheating on the day of her wedding solidified the oppressive feelings she had been having, and she made a run for it. “Right now, it’s too suffocating. It’s hard to exist one second longer in this space. I’m suddenly filled with a desperate need to leave, but not just the room, or even the hotel. Rather, my very own skin.” While making her escape she ran into, literally, professional hockey player Blake. In spite of his dislike of her, he reluctantly helped Faye and let her stay with him at his isolated cabin. Their strong attraction became impossible to resist, and eventually led to a fake PR relationship.

The characters were interesting with complicated histories. Both main characters had a lot of baggage to unpack. Faye’s entire life and career weren’t true to her and had been manipulated by her father. “‘He’s always been my enemy. I just didn’t realize it before.’” She had to discover who she was apart from other people’s opinions. “For the first time, I’m realizing that I’d rather be widely hated than widely loved for a bunch of lies.” Blake, affected by issues from his family, was dead set against romance and relationships. “‘He’d rather fool himself into thinking that all love is doomed to fail than try it out for himself.’” With feelings growing between them, there was a lot for them to overcome. This book is part of a series and there is carryover from the other books but it can be read as a standalone. This story includes elements that involve parental manipulation, infidelity, and past parental misogyny. This is a very detailed open-door romance with mild power and control elements. There is significant innuendo and strong harsh language throughout.

I last week, I read Britney Spears’ memoir. So it was interesting to me to read this book, with a pop star FMC whose father is her manager. Especially when he set her up and made her look mentally unstable. So that if she fired him, he would control the narrative and could potentially get legal and practical control over her through a conservatorship. This really resonated with
me because of Spears’ autobiography and how it happened to her (her father alleges that Spears is mentally ill while Spears maintains that, although she had postpartum depression, she is not and has never been mentally ill. She alleges that her father used her postpartum depression to get control over her in a conservatorship which lasted 13 years). This made Faye’s actions understandable. I really felt for the character. And I was rooting for her for the whole book. This was a good book because it kept me interested, connected me with the main character, and made me think. The only thing I didn’t like about it was that Blake’s resistance to love made him pretty unsympathetic and difficult to empathize with. I liked the ending, though, and Blake did redeem himself somewhat.

This storyline at its basic plot isn't a new one for me- though usually it involves a mountain man instead of a hockey player. Popstar Faye is famous and this was supposed to be the 'wedding of the century,' until she found her fiancé cheating on her with her step sister, no one else seemed to care, and he had no remorse or guilt. So she ran. There is more to her situation, and the more we learn of it, the sadder her story is. I didn't really like Blake at all. From his first chapter I found him judgmental, cynical, cold, and very quick to make assumptions in a condescending way. I honestly wondered if he would have helped her if he didn't find her attractive. They were clearly meant to be seen as opposites, and while I usually like a grumpy character, he never grew on me. Being this was enemies-to-lovers, I didn't care for their dynamic. Honestly, I stopped listening after a while.

This is the first book I've listened to narrated by Martina Ciccia. She did fine with the female voices, but not so well with the male. I can understand that it's hard for a female narrator to deepen her voice convincingly for the male characters. I just find it distracting because if I were mocking a man's tone of voice, I would talk in that same tone. So it's harder for me to take seriously.

Overall: 2 stars
Performance: 2 stars
Story: 2 stars

You'll be left speechless by this amazing fake-dating, enemies-to-lovers hockey romance! The plot centers on a rock singer who bails on her wedding and ends up in a secluded lodge with the sultry yet attractive professional hockey player Blake White. They can't resist their connection, despite their early hostility, and soon they're pretending to date in order to avoid the attention of the press.
The characters are likable and well-developed, with a tough yet endearing hero and a strong female lead. The dialogue between the main characters is funny and clever, and the prose is captivating. The narrative has many twists and turns that keep you on the edge of your seat, and the romance is sultry and rewarding.
All things considered, fans of enemies-to-lovers clichés, phony dating, and hockey romances should not miss this novel. From beginning to end, the novel is an exciting and thrilling trip, and the author's writing is excellent. This novel is a terrific pick if you like hockey romances, fictitious dating, and enemies-to-lovers stories.

*The Pucking Grump* by A.J. Summers

Spice Level: 🌶🌶🌶
5 scenes - nothing too crazy but hit up chapter 12 for the spiciest of the bunch!

Okay, I kind of loved this book! Famous singer turned runaway bride and pro hockey player turned reluctant savior/fake boyfriend…what’s not to love! Faye finds out on her wedding day that her groom-to-be is cheating on her with her step sister. So she runs. And Blake helps her get away. However, he doesn’t really like her and definitely doesn’t like the idea of more than liking her. He hides her away at his place in a small town where no one can find her. At least they think no one can find her. But eventually they are spotted and it’s assumed he’s her rebound. So they lean into that. While they start off as enemies, they eventually catch the feels and the spice starts spicing! It’s nothing too crazy, but we get the spice by chapter 9 and these two are really fun to read and watch try to stay away from each other!

Blake does NOT believe in love. Even if two of his best friends have found it, and one of them is married to his sister. Still, he'll NEVER fall in love.

Faye is getting married to the love of her life, her boyfriend of 7 years, who's been with her all throughout the building of her popstar career, and he has been the man behind all the love songs she's written over the years. But then, she walks in on him with her stepsister 10 minutes before they're supposed to be walking down the aisle!

Blake helps Faye run away from her sham of a marriage, and the more they spend time together, the more they learn about love, and the more their views on love change and grow.

And through this, they reach conclusions that absolutely ring true with me, and that make my romantic heart flutter in all the best ways. Making this a thoroughly enjoyable read.

Loved it. Faye is a singer/star whose whole career is based on love songs. When she discovers her fiancé having sex with one of her bridesmaids the day of her wedding she runs. She runs into (quite literally) Blake. Blake is attending her wedding under duress to be the plus one of his friend. Faye is the opposite of everything he believes. He cannot stand her. When she knocks him over and he sees the state she is in he agrees to help her. As they are holed up in his cabin and her career is imploding, he starts to see another side of her and can’t fight his attraction. These two are hot together. Can their fake relationship deal turn into something real? Will Blake change his mind about love? You’ll need to read this book to find out. You won’t be disappointed. I was given an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review.

A well written and narrated sports themed romance. I loved how the narration brought this book and characters to life. Our main characters are singer/star Faye and hockey pro Blake. When Faye bails on her wedding after discovering her to-be groom cheating she flees and these two find themselves stuck together in a remote lodge. While they have an attraction from the start, they initially become enemies, only to find they can both benefit from a fake relationship and the attraction they have in undeniable. I loved the banter, and that Summers delivers great characters who develop and grow. Overall, a great romance read / listen. I'm looking forward to more from Summers!

This is the first book I have read by A.J. Summers and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. I loved seeing Faye learn how to stand on her own throughout the book. Blake's character growth was also handled pretty well - though I do wish his childhood trauma was discussed a little more thoroughly.

My primary issue with this book is the consistent use of the word 'fluids'. I genuinely didn't realize how much I disliked that word in this context until reading this book.

You'll like this book if you like: forced proximity, one bed, hockey romance, rockstar/popstar romance, fake dating, spice, grumpy&sunshine, and a happily ever after.

Overall I would rate this book 4/5 ⭐ and 4/5 🔥.

OMG this book will take on a whole new meaning of a lying, cheating you know what from not only Ben who was supposed to be the groom to Faye but Diana who is her stepsister. When Faye catches them getting it on right before the wedding I wanted to reach into the book and knock the cr@p out of both of them. I felt really sad for the heartbreak Faye was going through. This book is ABSOLUTELY AMAZING and BREATHTAKING as well. So, to see how everything turns out for Faye and if she gets herself a new man and a HEA you are going to need to read this book and let me tell you right now it is one HECK of a GREAT book.

Faye ran into Blake while she was making an escape from her wedding after finding her fiancée and her stepsister together and instead of defending her, her father was going to have her go through with it.

Blake was attending the wedding only so that he could get face time with an agent. When Faye ran into him, he thought see was being over dramatic, still ended up helping her.

This was good story that is fast pace and has unique twist that pulls you in. Blake and Faye have an amazing chemistry the you can feel ignite the pages.

How delightful is this story? It is just so imaginative, but jet you can almost believe that something like unfolds in this story could happen in reality or a version there of. I smiled frequently while reading and if a story gives me motive to smile, humour me then that goes a long way and no obvious typos. As I liked the story and all here abovementioned this story really is deserving the fabulous four stars I am giving it here.

Watching heartbreak right on the page as a "runaway" bride runs right into who she's meant to be with.
Faye is a rockstar getting ready for her wedding when she walks in on her fiancé cheating on her, with none other than her sister. Exit stage right, right into the chest of pro hockey player Blake.
While everything starts fake as a way to help Faye, feelings soon become involved and lines blurred.
If you enjoy hockey romance, rockstar romance, instalove, instaromance, spice, HEAs this is for you.

OMG 😱 another great hockey story. It caught my attention as soon as I turned the first page. It was addicted as I was on the edge of my seat and I couldn’t even put it down. These characters romance was like fire and ice. It will be more than a fake dating romance. Their feelings began to grow strong as the physical and chemistry connection became sensational and spicy with a hint of sexual tension. It was a rollercoaster ride of emotions and excitement and pleasure.
I definitely recommend this book and you won’t be disappointed. I am voluntarily leaving my honest opinion. Trina Jones

Faye is a popstar basely run by her father from love songs to who she should marry and what her wedding should be like. That is until she walks into her stepsister's, chief bridesmaid, room where the groom is doing something he shouldn't. Faye rushes from the hotel and runs into Blake. Runaway bride with a hockey player who doesn't believe in love and relationships. Blake takes her to his cabin outside Philly to keep her away from the media and social media. So starts a rough road. Happiness or heartache?.

Sweet & spicy. A really good read!! I've not read a pop-star or hockey romance yet, so for it being my 1st of those tropes, I wasn't disappointed. I love the runaway bride, who runs into the arms of a hockey player and they run off to a secluded area and she finds herself all over again. But the spice scenes, him not bein able to keep his hands off her once they start, the teasing, even the fake relationship. Everything was on point. Never left guessing. The story tied up very well. I will be reading the next book in the series.

It was an alright short read

This sounded good, had some popular tropes, but the writing wasn't really for me. The MC seemed to be all about the lust and not wanting anyone else to touch her than actually being in love with her. Even their texts were only explicit. They did nothing else but bedroom activities. Also the word choices were sometimes a bit uncomfortable. Like "clitor!s" or "labia" or "fluids". Also, the spicy scenes were one-sided. Not many women want to read about an MC who had smexy times with the fmc DOZENS of times and received oral but didn't give it.

Blake and Faye's story is sweet, passionate, fun, and emotional. Faye, a pop star, is beautiful, smart, and determined. Blake, a pro hockey star, is handsome, grumpy, supportive, and protective. They are opposites attract, and they are perfect together. Their story is fast-paced, and entertaining. I liked this Enemies to Lovers Fake Dating Hockey Romance. Martina Ciccia did a good job narrating this book. I enjoyed it.

Interesting read

This author really did a great job sucking me in to the story right from the start. I had all the feels for Faye, and just had to know how her story would unfold. I was only mildly disappointed, and it wasn’t exactly with Faye so much, but more with Blake. I get that he had some lingering issues, but man… how many times did she need to be kicked while she was already down. It was like as soon as she was back up and standing tall he would pull the rug out from under her again. I’m looking forward to reading the next book, and more from this author.

Surprises abound. From the start this tale had more twists than a dozen pretzels. The characters begin rather fuzzy but as the story unfolds the characters clear up immensely. The plot is a real page turner with plenty suspense, including a few awful human’s portrayed. Can’t say that there aren’t some predictable scenes but they are done well in a story that isn’t overcrowded with words. Enjoyed it more than I thought I would!

This was a book I KNEW I would fall in love with at the first couple chapters. The writing was great and the perspective of each character was vibrant. There wasn't much sports included. I was really in love with the descriptive language. I felt like I was in the cabin and at the wedding. I wish I could read again for the first time. ❤️.

Good read

This was a short fast read for me. The story started with super fast chemistry that kind of simmered down. I liked the development of the characters but would have liked it to a little more indept. Especially how Blake's relationship with father effected his view on love. And maybe a bit of Faye her experiences and she wasn't happy with their love. But overall a good short read.

Faye was all set to get married until she found out her fiancé was cheating on her. So she decides to leave and runs into Blake who only attended the wedding because he was trying to meet up with agent. So Blake decides to help Faye escape. Faye asks for help to disappear since she is famous and afraid that people will bother her. So her and Blake escape to his cabin in the woods. The close proximity ends up helping these two fall in love with each other. Good story fast paced with spice.
