Sweet Potato Soul Vegan Vibes: 100 Soulful Plant-Based Recipes for Healthy Everyday Meals; A Cookbook

Rate this book
100 new vegan recipes that bring fun to the plate for every meal of the day, from the bestselling author of Sweet Potato Soul.

Jenné Claiborne knows that vegans have more fun. She's been enjoying the vibrant health, energy, and joy from eating plants for 13 years—vegan vibes—and during that time, the vegan space has exploded, with fake meats and cheeses, fast foods, and processed treats galore. While exciting, these options don’t tap into the vibrancy of the vegetable world.

In Vegan Vibes, Jenné invites you to fall in love with cooking and eating plants, in their delicious and vibrant diversity. After stints in New York City and Los Angeles, she's returned to her hometown of Atlanta, Georgia, where she is freshly inspired in her vegan kitchen by the city's multicultural collard green soup mellowed by miso, sweet potatos crisped in the air fryer and heated with jerk seasoning, and corn ribs kissed by Korean gochujang sauce.

Now that Jenné's a mom, she's transforming her favorite veggies into quick and easy crowd-pleasing meals. Vegan Vibes offers 100 dishes that are almost as much fun to make as they are to eat. That means laid-back whole food-based ingredient lists plus straightforward, no-fail techniques. And her unique flair for flavor elevates the simplest for example, a citrus spin on Mushroom Carnitas Tacos, Watermelon Gazpacho for the ultimate refreshing soup, and Magical Hummus packed with umami mushroom flavor.

Claiborne's second cookbook is vibrant with pictures and rich in tasty, and fairly easy to execute recipes. I like that she uses ingredients that have risen in western popularity due to going viral, such as gochujang. Apart from the French lentils I feel like I could find everything in your average well-stocked grocery store.
I think her gimmick of being sweet potato centric is cute, and doesn't overload you. Not every dish uses the tuber, but many do and they all seem fitting.
Recipes I have made so far include the corn ribs, "Killer Kimchi Pancakes", and Tahini-Rose Granola, and I look forward to making more. She has a wonderful selection of dressing recipes in the back that would be perfect to mix and match.

This cookbook is chock full of recipes, all of them 100% plant-based. If you purchase this book you are getting bang with your buck because of the number of original recipes, along with notes and personal vignettes
for many of them. Not to mention the recipes are creative; many are unique and not the same thing you see all the time, and I can get a sense of the authors personality from the style of the recipes. I think I should check out her first cookbook to see what that one contained.

Here is a list of just some of the recipes that I marked as ones I want to make: miso creamy corn pasta, rose tahini granola, Gochujang corn ribs, no-bake cherry walnut crumble, miso caramel-y banana pudding, eat mor tofu nuggets, orange cauliflower bites, sweet potato butter, sweet potato pie spice, sunflower cheese, frozen beet margarita, and several others.

A couple negatives for me, and these really are a “me” problem- some of the recipes had too many steps and too many ingredients for what I would gravitate to. I like 30 minutes or less meals with ingredients I have on hand or can easily run out and get. I don’t keep a stock of rose water or pomegranate molasses and some other speciality ingredients. (The author does have an informative section in the beginning with her recommendations for pantry essentials.) Also, some of the recipes had ingredients that involved making another recipe from the book first and I’m way too lazy for that.

I think this book would appeal to many people, and not just vegans.

I enjoy reading cookbooks for a variety of reasons. I seldom purchase one unless it meets certain requirements one being assessable ingredients and the other quick prep time. In addition ingredients that I enjoy as a 80/20 vegan. I came across this title in a magazine and the recipe featured caught my eye, Pesto pea pasta. I’m definitely sold on this one. I liked the author’s layout and the story of how she became a vegan as well as walking you through her pantry staples and appliances she uses. I found a few recipes that I’d like to try. Overall for me most of the recipes were just not what I was looking for. I did like that she uses mostly whole natural ingredients..

I would call this Southern Cooking Lite, far less deep frying with a touch of Asia, Mexico and Mediterranean. I don't bake that often and I throw Indian into my vegan cooking, otherwise there fair number of recipes that I already have. So not a keeper for me.

On the other hand if this is your first vegan cookbook, its not a bad one to start out with.

A nice introduction to veganism, the selections are interesting with some twists. Many others have done this already - produced a vegan recipe book and including their story as inspiration - but this book really doesn't pay much as much attention to healthier options as they could have done.
